At Barnsley Resort, playing lawn games, canoeing and forest bathing in flip-flops go hand-in-hand with the gentile formality of Southern tradition. Dressing for dinner is expected, but no one will turn their nose at a cold one while relaxing on their cottage porch or enjoying a wood-fired pizza and country music at the resort's Beer Garden.
What sets Barnsley apart from other resorts is its storied past. Covering nearly 3,000 acres, 40 of which are designated as its historic district, the tale of the resort began over two centuries ago when Godfrey Barnsley set out to build a European-inspired mansion for his wife. Although his bride didn't live long enough to see the completion of his work, what remains today is a culturally significant part of life in the mid1850s. A popular spot for weddings and celebra tions, guests can explore what is left of the stun ning home and learn about the Barnsley family through the on-property museum that houses memorabilia from the family and former estate. Guests can also roam through the only Downing Gardens in the South, another gift from Godfrey to his wife. The formal gardens remain intact and include boxwoods dating back to the 1800s as well as a massive China fir tree imported from the Philippines in 1850.

Reeves advises never to pick colors on a rainy day – they’ll skew blue or green and won’t look right in daylight. If you’re interested in bold colors, but don’t want to com mit to paint or wallpaper, great options include a bold-colored kitchen island mixed with interesting accessories, bold powder mirrors, accent pillows or bold “found” accessories like a bowl of colored glass bobbles found while traveling overseas.
“Personally, I can’t get enough of bold colors,” Reeves says, “but there’s definitely an art to balancing them. A bold color can be your showstopper, but it needs to tie in other places to balance out properly.”
“If you like to change things up quite often, these can easily be changed out season to season without a huge commitment to your calendar or pocketbook,” she says.

No color is a “bad” color, says Crystal Reeves, an interior designer and owner of CLR Design Services, Inc. But finesse is needed to use colors in a harmonious way that meshes with all of your home décor. Reeves loves experimenting with colors, and especially bold ones. Choosing the right color for an area can make it pop. Still, “there’s a lot of troubleshooting that comes with selecting colors,” she says. Online color tools are helpful, though there are nuances that can’t be deciphered online. That’s why in-person color selection with a professional is always best.
She also loves large-scale geometric wallpaper paired with light-colored, simple furnishings for bedrooms. Add pillows with a sculptural pattern and small geomet rics, bling like metallic cording and metallic lamps. But always seek professional help because, “bold color is not for the faint of heart.”

Houston hair stylist Louis Lopez built his brand on beautiful colors and edgy styles. Unsurprisingly, his latest collaboration with pho tographer Alida Bonifaz, who is known for her fashion-forward edi torial photography skills, is a mesmerizing and colorful success. Louis, a self-proclaimed introvert, felt an instant connection with Bonifaz and her creative team. The pair met in 2018 after running into each other in the same photography circles. They collaborated on previous photo shoots along with Cori Aston, the team's makeup artist. "We team up to do more fashion and beau ty-focused photoshoots as well, but the avant-garde shoots are where the two of them really get to stretch their creative muscles and create outside the confines of client and commercial model portfolio work," says Bonafaz. This latest series of yarn wigs began several years ago when Lopez wanted to challenge himself to create something different. He used sheep's wool yarn to make a gorgeous albeit very expensive wig. This time, however, Lopez ordered no-frills nylon yarn from Amazon to see what he could transform it into. Inspired by his late dog's pom pom toys, Lopez says the series went in a different direc tion from what he originally envisioned. "I think people would be shocked to know that dog toys inspired this series of yarn wigs," says the hairstylist. "But they came out even better than I imagined."
Bonifaz learned to crochet one week before the photo shoot to ensure the mod els had something to hold and wear in the pictures. And at the very last minute, she booked Nala, the cat, for her first modeling gig. Both Bonifaz and Lopez agree that their favorite photos are the ones including Nala. Lopez said, "It is interesting to have an animal personality in the photo."
