Welcome to our annual Summer and Adventure Issue! This season is the perfect time to pause and create a bucket list of activities focused on easy-going fun and relaxation. Some of the best summers spent are often not filled with constant activities and trips but are those that reflect a slower pace and simple moments of enjoying those around us. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something we can attain with our packed schedules, it can be so refreshing to take some time to slow down and relish the simple pleasures that remind us of our own childhood. Some things never change – and the best times can be as simple as hosting a backyard barbecue with friends, making s’mores by a fire pit, spending a day on the water, eating ice-cream on a steamy day, or simply taking in the night sky with someone you love. This issue is packed with both the practical and the adventuresome ways you can make the most of your summer days. I hope you remember to throw this issue in your pool bag and you find inspiration from what’s inside. Enjoy!

For years, Texans in the know have vacationed in the northeast seeking the cooler weather of the Great Lakes region. When temperatures hit triple digits in Texas and are likely to stay there for several more months, it is time to seek out cooler destinations. Lake Geneva, a popular summer vacation spot nestled in the southeastern part of Wisconsin, is less than two hours from Chicago and one hour away from Milwaukee, making it an easily accessible travel locale.
LAKE GENEVA OFFERS A COOL RESPITE FROM TEXAS SIZZLING SUMMER WEATHER. ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA
In the early 1900s, this sleepy midwestern town with miles of beautiful shoreline became home to sprawling multi-million dollar lakefront estates owned by wealthy Chicagoans like the Wrigley, Sears and Schwinn families. The grand estates are ever-present, and most recently, the 14,145-square-foot Driehaus Estate that sits on 40 acres along Lake Geneva sold for a cool $36 million making it the most expensive home sale in Wisconsin history. In addition to wealthy Chicagoans, Lake Geneva was handpicked by Hugh Hefner as a location for his famed Playboy Club and Hotel in 1968. The bunny resort basked in the celebrity spotlight and was visited by stars including Bob Hope and Sonny and Cher until it eventually closed in 1981. Visitors to Lake Geneva can get a history lesson and tour of the spring-fed lake aboard Lake Geneva Cruise Line’s U.S. mailboat tour. Lake Geneva mailboats were born out of necessity in 1916 when rural roads were too hard to access. Mail jumpers deliver mail by jumping from the passenger-carrying mailboat onto docks, where they run to the mailbox and then hurry back to jump onto the boat as it floats by. While watching this feat of agility and athleticism, which happens seasonally from June until September, passengers learn about the history of the lake and its inhabitants. EATS & DRINKS Lake Geneva is home to a wealth of delicious food and drink options - many with gorgeous indoor and outdoor seating with lake views. Foodies will enjoy everything from breweries and wineries to USDA prime steaks at Geneva Chophouse or woodfired pizza at Oakfire. Opus at The Belfry House, a recently opened fine-dining restaurant, offers a decadent multicourse French dining experience from notable chef Phillipe Chevalier.
SLEEP & REL A X ATION Grand Geneva Resort & Spa is the largest full-service resort in Lake Geneva, where guests can relax at the spa or hit the links of one of its two championship golf courses. On 1300 acres of beautifully manicured grounds, the resort has 600 rooms, a fitness facility with 50 exercise classes per week and three restaurants and bars. For those looking for a bespoke escape, the Belfry House offers an exclusive twelve-room boutique hotel experience. Each room is equipped with a soaking tub, fireplace and custom furnishings to create a one-of-a-kind experience.

Complimentary lake-fed breezes come with every outdoor activity in Lake Geneva, and while patio season is short in Texas, luxuriating outside is par for the course in Wisconsin. The lake itself offers an abundance of opportunities for outdoor recreation such as kayaking, jet skiing, boating and more. Outdoor equipment rentals are also easy to come by at various locations in the city, including Clear Water Outdoor for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards and Avant Cycle Cafe for e-bikes. However, no equipment is necessary to traverse the Lake Geneva Shore Path, which boasts over 20 miles of walking trails around the lake. For those looking for more excitement, Lake Geneva Canopy Tours features multiple zip lines and sky bridges for a thrilling time.

SUREFIRE WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SUMMER PEST FREE TAYLOR MAPES OF LDG SERVICES SHARES WAYS TO KEEP YOUR OUTDOOR SUMMER TIME CAREFREE. ARTICLE BY MALENA JEZEK | PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAUREN HOLUB PHOTOGRAPHY
As soon as summer sets in, families enjoy long days spent outdoors - sprucing up the yard and completing outdoor projects are top of mind. Just as we get outside to soak in the sunshine, the insects and bugs come out of winter hiding to do the same. Suddenly mosquitos, spiders, and wasps are invading our space both inside and out. Thankfully there are ways to keep unwanted visitors to a minimum with LDG Services. It’s your yard, and you deserve to keep it that way this season. That’s what proud family man and business owner Taylor Mapes of LDG Services believes. “I am an owner of the company in partnership with my dad. My mom does all the administrative/office
work, and my wife is in line to take that over next. So, we are definitely family owned and operated.” Pest Control had always been a side venture for the Mapes family, but LDG Services has committed full-time to helping clients rid themselves of unwanted pests in the last five years. “It was a blessing as now I don’t travel, and I am happy to own a local business,” Mapes says. Mapes enjoys spending every minute outside both in Houston and on a high-fence hunting ranch in Freer, Texas. Between their personal passions and thriving business, they are the perfect experts to ask how to enjoy an insect-free summer. Mapes shares his top tips below.
1. REPAIR DAMAGED WINDOW SCREENS. Repairing window screens that may have holes or damage helps seal your home from mosquitoes and other nuisance insects.
The Cube Pro Mosquito Misting System

Online Bodyweight and Minimal Equipment Workouts
Sweaty and challenging workouts done in 30 minutes or less at home
ARTICLE BY KELSEY HARRIS AND JEN FRUDAKER
G E T ACT IV E | FITN ESS
Bags are packed, reservations are made, and the Out of Office automatic reply is letting everyone know you have officially entered vacation mode. There’s one thing that’s lingering: how to go on vacation without pressing pause on the fitness progress you’ve made, or avoid commuting to a gym and paying drop-in fees. Mayhem Athlete provides online programming that guarantees challenging workouts which can be done in 30 minutes or less. These quick but effective workouts incorporate compound movements such as burpees, push ups and lunges. Compound movements use more than one muscle group, requiring more energy from your muscles to recover. This means you can continue to burn calories while enjoying the beach or sitting at work, long after the workout is over. The Mayhem Athlete M30 program offers two options for all fitness levels. Mayhem Bodyweight, a 30-minute format that requires no equipment, and Mayhem Minimal, a 30-minute format which only requires a couple dumbbells. Mayhem Athletes’ easy to use app, SugarWOD, provides you with a warm up, workout, accessory cool-down, and coaching video - ensuring you get the most out of your 30 minutes!
