LIFESTYLE LETTER
Lessons in Trailblazing
June 2022 PUBLISHER
Suzanne Schakett suzanne.schakett@citylifestyle.com EDITOR
Welcome to the debut of summertime in Houston! As we welcome in those all-too-familiar arid temperatures, it’s a great time to pause and celebrate the men all around us who are shaking things up in music, food, philanthropy, fashion, and fun. Inspirational men have the incredible power and privilege of honoring familiar traditions while forging new ground. In this issue, we are lucky to partake in some thoughtful ‘musical conversation’ with Lyle Lovett, the iconic Texas musician who is excited to release his first album in a decade. I also encourage you to dig into Texas Titans, where the noteworthy ‘Clutch City’ collaboration between former Rockets star Mario Elie and Karbach Brewing is front and center. We also had the privilege to sit down with Houston restaurant legend Johnny Carrabba, who was happy to share his insights on bringing Italian comfort food to the local plate and palate many decades ago, and his journey along the way. In Shaken Not Stirred, the insightful conversations and libations continue flowing with five prominent Houstonians, each offering us their own 'food for thought'. And speaking of food, a great cocktail begs for a tasty companion dish. In New and Notable, we can’t help but indulge our foodie tendencies by showcasing the trendiest new restaurants to hit the Houston scene with a splash! There’s lots more on men who are leading the way in thought and deed all around us, so I hope you kick back and find inspiration in this special issue. Cheers to all the Dads and Grads too!

LEGENDARY TEXAS SINGER AND SONGWRITER LYLE LOVETT RELEASES HIS FIRST ALBUM IN TEN YEARS AND REFLECTS ON HIS DECADES-LONG CAREER .

For the first time in a decade, Texas crooner Lyle Lovett released new music on his album 12th of June. Produced by Chuck Ainlay and Lovett, the Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter’s most recent work features a mix of original music and interpretations of songs by Nat King Cole and Dave Frishberg. Released by Verve Records, the rich interwoven mix of jazz, blues, folk, and country music he is known for is front and center, and Lovett is joined by an all-star band offering beautiful harmonies and acoustic support. Lovett’s latest album reflects the changes in his life since his last record, Release Me, which debuted Top 10 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums and whose title track reached #1 on the Americana Radio Singles Chart. The 64-year-old native Texan was raised in Klein, about halfway between Tomball and Spring, north of Houston. He grew up playing guitar and eventually played in bands on the bar circuit while studying at Texas A&M University in the early 1980s. After a brief marriage to actress Julia Roberts, Lovett met and married April Kimble in 2017 at a small ceremony in Harris County, and the pair have fouryear-old twin girls together. “My songs are rarely fiction,” Lovett says. “That’s how I approach my work. My songs are from my life. I am the character in these songs. I get to spend my life, for the most part, doing a job where I get to be myself.” Lovett is currently on tour with his Large Band and will be co-headlining several dates with Chris Isaak. Houstonians will have to take a Texas road trip to catch a concert - he will be in Austin in late August.

B ACK STAGE | ARTS + CULTURE
“Playing music—just getting to be on stage with talented musicians—is something that takes on a life of its own,” the musician recently told American Songwriter. “When you’re on tour, and you get to walk out on stage, it’s sorta like recess at school. It’s the best time, it’s the point of the day when you just get to do what you want to do and be free. I don’t ask the guys to play the same solos every night, you know? I like standing in the middle of a musical conversation that’s happening right there, right then.”
“I’ve just pursued my music the same way I always have. Whether you’re getting ready for a tour, or whether you’re getting ready to go into the studio, or whether you’re just trying to write—the process is kinda ongoing, and it’s in your head. Regardless of what you’re doing, regardless of how the rubber hits the road, when you love music and making it, you just live in that world.”

Te x a s T i t a n s CATCH UP WITH MARIO ELIE AND HIS COLLABORATION WITH KARBACH BREWING AND FIND OUT WHAT’S NEW WITH HOUSTON’S FAVORITE RESTAURATEUR JOHNNY CARRABBA.
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA Already known for their hugely successful sports collaborations, Karbach Brewing unveiled their latest team up, Clutch City Lager, at the beginning of the 2021-2022 Houston Rockets basketball season. Joining best-selling Crawford Bock, a nod to the Houston Astros, and 12th Man Lager, a collaboration with the Texas A&M University Aggies, the beer is an Americanstyle lager (4% ABV). Clutch City refers to Houston's nickname after the Houston Rockets won the 1994 and 1995 NBA Championships. Featuring a classic Houston Rockets logo and the mustard yellow and ketchup red colors of that era, the beer is a compliment to the legacy of the team. Karbach teamed up with famed players from that time frame, including Robert Horry,

Vernon Maxwell, and Mario Elie. "Every time I see Clutch City, it brings back great memories. This mustard and red are just amazing. I look at this can, and memories instantly come back," says former guard and forward for the Houston Rockets, Mario Elie. "When you mention Clutch City, I perk up because I know I was part of that Clutch City group." Like several other Karbach brews, there is a charity component to Clutch City Lager. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Clutch City Foundation, an umbrella organization for all of the Rocket's community initiatives. The foundation's mission is to make a difference in the lives
of those less fortunate - especially children through education, grassroots basketball, and outreach. "The most important thing is that the lager is very good, and for it to be called Clutch City knowing that a lot of us were a part of that, including our city, and the great fans. I remember those days…when you couldn't get a seat in the house," says Elie. As for the taste, it is a crisp, clean lager easily paired with grilled chicken, a seafood dinner, or stadium treats at a game. "I sampled it before it came out, and now I see many people drinking it at the games. When I go get a beverage at the game, they have the cool Clutch City Lager cups, so I see a lot of people drinking them. It's a smooth taste; it's clean - nice and fresh."

The day after Christmas in 1986, Johnny Carrabba and his uncle Damian Mandola opened the doors to their famed Original Carrabba’s on Kirby Drive. They didn’t have enough money to put cash in the till, but they borrowed funds from Johnny’s father and had a successful debut allowing for a second location at South Voss and Woodway seven years later. Fast forward three decades, and not only is the Carrabba name synonymous with Italian food, but it is also the name behind a restaurant dynasty with over 200 Carrabba’s Italian Grills worldwide. Second in scale only to Olive Garden, the restaurant chain is owned by Bloomin’ Brands, the conglomerate behind notable eateries such as Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Outback, and Bonefish Grill. Although the two original restaurants are still family-owned and operated, Johnny is not involved in the day-to-day business of the chain restaurants but remains a brand ambassador. In the nearly forty years since the Original Carrabba’s opened, the restaurateur has been involved in several concepts, most notably Mia’s Table, a casual American food eatery named

after his daughter and Grace’s, a tribute to his grandmother Grace Mandola who inspired him in the kitchen. One of Cararabba’s main priorities is keeping his nine restaurants relevant in Houston’s dining scene. In addition to upgrading the menus and staying relevant on social media, Carrabba focuses on anticipating his customer’s needs. He ramped up the car-side carryout program during the pandemic, which remains successful today. He also focuses on his properties, ensuring they are up to date and well maintained, saying, “Customers and guests notice when we care for our facilities. Carrabba’s on Voss went through a major
remodel just four years ago. Carrabba’s on Kirby has an entirely new building in 2014.” The native Houstonian, who grew up on the East End, also credits employee retention as the key to his company’s success. “I am fortunate to have a lot of longevity with my employees. You have to have generational employees to have a generational company,” says the restaurateur. “We have many employees now whose young adult children are working for our company. I couldn’t do that if I had a lot of turnover. We concentrate on executing our fundamentals and staying focused on what got us to where we are today.”

CONVENIENCE A personal stylist’s priority is not only to create a fashionable wardrobe but to make the J.Hilburn luxury experience as simple as possible. Fittings can occur at home or the office during a time that best suits the client’s schedule.
FIT An essential part of creating a customized wardrobe is to make sure it is tailored to each client. J.Hilburn offers 12 different categories of custom-made-to-measure items. These range from tuxedos to tee shirts, five-pocket jeans, pull-on shorts, polos, and dress shirts.
STYLE Consultants strive to create pieces that will work together for less stress when a client is dressing for his lifestyle. Everything from special events, weekend hobbies, and professional demands are considered.
FINISHING TOUCHES A truly tailored experience includes making sure a client will stand out subtly with color, buttons, stitching, and accessorizing each look.
AFFORDABILITY J.Hilburn began in 2007, offering gentlemen the opportunity to wear custom shirts at a fraction of what they would pay elsewhere. Their current product has expanded across several categories with fabrics from eleven legendary European mills. The company relies on ten international factories to deliver the best-fitting garments while keeping the best prices for their clients in mind. sherryboudreaux.jhilburn.com
“The best part of my role as a stylist are my relationships with clients. They trust the process and know their wardrobe priorities are always top of mind.” Sherry Boudreaux

NEW AND NOTABLE Houston’s newest restaurants make a case for bringing joy back into the dining room.
ARTICLE BY GABI DE LA ROSA
Marmo, a modern Italian chophouse, opened in Montrose Collective this spring. Executive Chef Eli Jackson in partnership with Atlas Restaurant Group partner and executive chef Julian Marucci, teamed up to highlight an array of premium hand-cut steaks from local, domestic and international purveyors. Hand-rolled pasta is featured prominently on the menu, as well as an assortment of fresh seafood specialties. Guests can also enjoy the restaurant’s robust 22-page wine list and handcrafted cocktails, imported beers, and Italian aperitifs. marmoitalian.com Located in the historic former Houston’s Restaurant space, highly anticipated restaurant The Warwick opened in April. With executive chef Antoine Ware at the helm, diners will delight in a mix of New American and Southern fare - a taste of dishes flavored with his Cajun roots. Menu favorites include Charbroiled Gulf Oysters, Snapper Orleans, Gulf Shrimp and Grits. For those nostalgic for Houston’s Restaurant - a selection of its famous dishes are featured on the menu, including a version of The Dip and the Houston Hawaiian Ribeye, which were popular at the former restaurant. Guests can also enjoy a mix of traditional and modern cocktails, all complementing The Warwick’s unique offerings. warwickhouston.com

The team behind Houston favorites Doris Metropolitan and Badolina Bakery recently opened a third concept, Hamsa. The modern Israeli restaurant is in Rice Village and features dishes rich with vegetables, spices, and one-of-a-kind flavor profiles. Shared plates are a menu focal point bringing chef Sash Kurgan’s approach to elevated Middle Eastern cuisine to the forefront. Executive pastry chef Michal Micheli of Badolina Bakery fame oversees the dessert offerings. Guests can enjoy a wine list with curated wines from all over the world, including a Middle Eastern section with Israeli and Lebanese highlights. hamsahtx.com

In March, the Heights, a popular foodie destination known for its restaurant scene, got its first steakhouse. Patton’s, a boutique speakeasy-style steakhouse, is located inside Savoir restaurant. Moody lighting, ornate chandeliers, and dark leather banquets give the restaurant an old-world feel, perfect for enjoying live music or an intimate conversation. The restaurant features classic steakhouse staples like Waldorf Salad and Shrimp Cocktail and carefully selected and sourced steak options from Gable Cattle Company in Colorado. Speakeasy-worthy cocktails and an extensive selection of wines round out the decadent menu options. pattonsheights.com
