Not only do I enjoy learning about the women in our community, it is my distinct honor to share their stories. As I reflect on the many women in my life, I am thankful for each one and the impact they have made. One of the best qualities a woman can possess is having confidence in oneself, but at the same time being able to see the beauty and talent in other women and call out greatness in them, too. Women celebrating women and encouraging each other to succeed rather than competing with each other is so beautiful and rewarding. Encouraging and empowering the people in our own life can be something that comes naturally to do, but the impact of intentionally looking for ways to build up those in our greater community is so powerful. We all want to be seen, and when we share encouragement and consideration to those around us, barriers break down and warmth follows. Each woman featured in the pages of this magazine is unique; whether it be how they grew up, what they create, or how they are sharing their time or talents there is something that makes them exceptional. We are also recognizing a few local entrepreneurs and women who are finding ways to give back to our community that have left me inspired. In a world that thrives on competition, let’s take time to encourage each other, appreciate the beauty in everyone and lift each other up.

What better way to celebrate women than highlighting local business women and entrepreneurs making a difference in Houston. We’ve gathered a mix of emerging and established women working in their profession and giving back to the community not only through financial support, but through their time, and extraordinary talents.

Sherry Campbell, owner of Energy Realty, has always always given back to those in need. She works with several Houston nonprofits including I love Venezuela and Family Point Resources, among others. Campbell also worked to design and decorate two homes with Designing Interiors Volunteers At your Service (DIVAS) in partnership with the Houston Furniture Bank. Campbell sees her fair share of unwanted furniture from those buying or selling homes and partners with Guardian Angel Moms to get donated furniture to those in need. “Not only have I purchased and donated furniture personally for families in need, I now refer clients to donate to this organization when they are moving and are no longer in need of furniture or household goods.” Campbell’s latest charity is Save the Children in Ukraine where she is offering to match donations up to $5000. energy-realty.com

Dr. Nissi Hamilton Expert Survivor Leader, and Paralegal

When Dr. Nissi Hamilton is not working at her day job as a paralegal, you can find her working for the cause that means the most to her. Dr. Hamilton is a survivor of human sex trafficking, the first victim in Houston to ever run for public office, and has since become a powerful advocate for those still suffering at the hands of others. She has worked tirelessly to extricate herself and her children from the world of human trafficking and now helps victims do the same. “As I became the leader I am today, who can give people my time, talent, and financial resources; I learned that I cannot spend all of my money and resources on looking the part; I had to become the part,” says Dr. Hamilton. Dr. Hamilton has also worked with Crime Stoppers of Houston since 2011 when she was trying to find the murderer of her mother. Since then, she has worked with the nonprofit to develop Child Safety ID Kits which are distributed to schools, law enforcement agencies, nonprofits, and the general public. “The Program Director at Crime Stoppers of Houston, Sydney Zuiker, listened to my story of survival. Together, we were able to minimize victim’s vulnerabilities and implement them into a strategy for human trafficking prevention. Crime Stoppers of Houston was there to help me gain closure about the murder of my family, and they ended up becoming my family.” In addition to her philanthropic work, Dr. Hamilton also launched her forprofit foundation, A Survivor’s Voice of Victory. She has given away over 60,000 Child Safety ID Kits and over one million dollars in food and pandemic relief resources to underprivileged communities of color through her foundation. @thereal_nissihamilton

Chau Nguyen

Chief Public Strategies Officer, Houston Area Women’s Center Chau Nguyen escaped the war in Vietnam when she was just two years old. Her parents fled the country with her siblings, made the courageous journey halfway around the world to Houston, and made our great city their home. Because of their journey and the experience of being a refugee, nonprofit work, especially those helping families, women, and children in need, became a priority for Nguyen. “I have been drawn to service as far back as I can remember. From volunteering with the Sheltering Arm as a teenager, delivering food for senior citizens, and being a Big Sister through the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization, I gave my time in various ways.” Nguyen’s latest efforts focus on the Houston Area Women’s Center (HAWC), where she serves on the Executive Leadership Team, working alongside a diverse and all-female leadership team and a passionate and driven group of staff. HAWC has been helping women and children escape domestic and sexual violence for over 45 years. The nonprofit offers various services including emergency shelter, counseling, and legal services, crisis support, and career development. “We don’t do this work alone, and we do it better together, so I encourage everyone to donate, join the HAWC Board, volunteer, even work for the organization.” hawc.org

O’Hara has always given her time and energy. She volunteers for Meals on Wheels, reads to seniors, and supports the SPCA. However, her most significant philanthropic endeavor is giving microloans on the platform Kiva. “Kiva enables businesses worldwide to receive small loans to help them grow,” says O’Hara. “I especially like to make loans to women-owned businesses. OWNER, YOUNG W ILD A ND FR IEDM A N When Julie Friedman’s daughter struggled to speak and was not seeing any improvement with speech therapy, her doctor suggested incorporating sensory play into her daily routine. After researching sensory play, Friedman began creating themed sensory kits to take on the go. The kits included colorful, scented, homemade dough and textured items like cupcake liners, cookie cutters, and buttons. Her daughter had an immediate positive response to the kits. She began posting her kits on Instagram, and orders started coming in. When she launched her business in 2018, she sold 60 kits in under 30 minutes. In the next launch, the company sold 100 in one minute, and the trend has continued. “These sensory kits helped my daughter overcome many of her challenges, and now they are helping kids across the United States – to me, that is pretty special.”

Collaboration Celebrated jewelry designer Kendra Scott and influencer Emily Travis launch an exclusive capsule collection - the first of its kind for the brand. 30

In 2021 Kendra Scott stepped down as CEO of her eponymous jewelry company, but she has not stopped making waves in the accessories industry. Her company, composed of nearly 98% women, launched its first-ever influencer-designed collaboration this spring. Scott tapped Austin-based influencer Emily Travis of Champagne and Chanel to co-design a capsule bridal collection that debuted in March with a meet and greet at the brand's South Congress flagship store. "The Kendra Scott team is thrilled to have Emily be our first-ever influencer collaboration. The launch has been an incredible success," says Scott. "We kicked off this collaboration with Emily's meet-and-greet event. It gathered a huge crowd with a line wrapped around the block full of people eager to purchase the new product." Travis grew up in Houston and began her blog when she was a senior in college at Texas A&M University. Since then, she has also worked with the Kendra Scott brand for several years as an ambassador. When it came time to plan her wedding, Travis wanted to incorporate Scott's jewelry, and that is when the conversation about a collaboration took place. From start to finish, the design process took about a year, and Travis is still in awe that she co-designed jewelry with the Kendra Scott team. "I wore Kendra Scott throughout college, and if you told me I would get to design a wedding collection with her, there's no way I would have believed it," says Travis. Travis, who has over one million followers on Instagram, is known for an effortless style she nicknamed "the elevated everyday girl." Her feed is full of try-on hauls where she puts together practical yet chic outfits, which is how she describes her Kendra Scott collection. While designing the bridal line, her main goal was to create versatile pieces that can be worn not only on a wedding day but also afterward. Various classic shapes like emerald and round cut crystals are featured, including dainty drop earrings, tennis bracelets, and necklaces. Named after influential women in Travis' life, each piece of jewelry has a price point between $58 and $148.

During the design process, Scott encouraged Travis to take inspiration from all aspects of her wedding. What came of that advice is a piece they are both proud of - the Cameron Statement Earring. The earring effortlessly transitions from a formal showstopper to a stud with a unique detachable piece for more casual wear. "Designing this collection with Kendra Scott was an absolute dream. I didn't know what to expect going into this, but the Kendra Scott team was the most welcoming, intelligent, and creative group of people to work with," the newlywed says. Raad. Although the twosome grew up near each other in the Bayou City, they didn't meet and become friends until seven years ago. Raad stood by Travis' side on one of the biggest days of her life and has a role in the bridal collection, being featured in many marketing photos for the new line. "It was such a special day, and every detail was absolutely stunning, just like her jewelry line. I'm so proud of her for her launch with Kendra," says Raad. "Anything Emily does, she does it with her whole heart, and I think it shows with this collection. I've worked with Kendra Scott for years and have seen what an amazing brand they are. With their philanthropic work, dedication to quality, and customer service, you truly see their brand values, which align perfectly with Emily."

The collaboration between the two Texas brands went so well that Scott has not ruled out another one in the future. "Social media drives today's world, and influencers like Emily are entrepreneurs themselves. We are excited to step into this world and evolve our relationship with influencers for years to come." As for what is coming up for the Kendra Scott brand, she recently released a Spring 2022 collection and will have a summer collection in stores very soon. Smooth Confidence OIL AND GAS TRIAL LAWYER LAUREN VARNADO EXPLAINS WHY SHE LOVES FIGHTING FOR THE UNDERDOGS. Lauren Varnado calls herself a pit bull, and for good reason. A young female in the oil and gas industry – a bit of an anomaly, even in 2022 – Varnado was recently named Managing Partner of the Houston office of Michelman & Robinson, LLP. She opened the office just two months ago, but she hasn’t missed a beat when it comes to representing her clients.
