Next up, Bel-Air is all the buzz! We sat down with Olly Sholotan, an actor with Houston roots who makes his TV debut as Carlton Banks in the remake of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air this month. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN BROADWAY? What kicked off my love, specifically, was when I saw the national tour of Wicked in 6th grade. I was obsessed with everything about that show, and I knew I had to be on Broadway.

WHAT IS ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT PERFORMING ON BROADWAY? A lot of literal blood, sweat, and tears go into making a show run smoothly. Our days include doctor appointments, training sessions, rehearsals, voice lessons, workshop presentations, etc. It is a truly non-stop lifestyle, but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

HOW HAS GROWING UP IN HOUSTON/ TEXAS PLAYED A PART IN YOUR CAREER? I spent most of my childhood two hours north of Houston, in Lufkin, Texas. As soon as I realized my passion was acting and singing, I jumped at any opportunity I could find there. After my freshman year at Lufkin Highschool, I auditioned for the High School for Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA). After receiving the news that I had gotten in, my mom and I moved to Houston, and the rest was history.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR CAREER? I performed in my first show when I was three years old. My father was the director of drama at The Kinkaid School in Houston, and he needed a young boy to play Astyanax in his production of Trojan Women, so naturally, he chose his son. I then performed in my first professional production, A Christmas Carol, when I was seven years old at the Alley Theatre.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS THAT YOU DO BEFORE GOING ON STAGE? I try to remind myself of why I perform before I go onstage. I remind myself that it’s the audience’s first time seeing the show, and they deserve as good of a show as the people that saw it before them.

IS THERE ONE ROLE THAT YOU DREAM OF PLAYING ON STAGE? As someone who grew up loving movie musicals, I’ve always wanted to play Don or Cosmo in Singin’ in the Rain. Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor were two of my idols growing up.

HOW HAS GROWING UP IN HOUSTON/TEXAS PLAYED A PART IN YOUR CAREER? I honestly believe Houston is one of the best places to grow up as a young actor. The training I received in Houston was unparalleled. I trained/ performed at TUTS, the Humphrey’s School, The Alley Theatre, Wildfish Theatre, The Tribble School, Masquerade Theatre, HITS, and The Kinkaid School.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN PERFORMING? My parents put me in ballet class when I was three years old; it was a kinder-combo class in which we learned both ballet and tap. I always loved ballet, but getting the chance to experience the performing arts through an entire world of opportunities solidified my transition from ballet to Broadway.

WHAT IS ONE THING MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT PERFORMING ON STAGE? The nerves never go away. After all these years of being on stage, I still get nervous to ‘break a leg’. I used to think being nervous was a weakness, but it’s quite the opposite - it means I still love it. I don’t perform on stage in my current position, but I still get butterflies when I’m watching from the wings.

HOW HAS TEXAS PLAYED A PART IN YOUR CAREER? Texas has been a career hub for me many times - from touring (twice), playing the Zach Theater in Austin, and teaching at TXST University. Southern vibes remind me of where I come from and all the tacos I can eat!

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO COMBINE AFROBEATS AND REGGAE WITH THE VIOLIN? As an African, I wanted to make music with the violin that Africans and Caribbeans could connect to. It’s my way of exporting the rhythms of Africa to the world of instrumental music and crossing cultural barriers without words.

ARE PEOPLE SURPRISED WHEN THEY SEE YOU PERFORM LIVE? Yes, they are. I sound better performing live; the interaction is different, the feeling of being in the same space of my performance is pure magic.

YOU ARE VERY MUSICALLY TALENTED - WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STICK WITH VIOLIN AS YOUR PRIMARY INSTRUMENT? The connection I have with the violin is way different from other instruments. I also decided to take the more difficult route of choosing an instrument that isn’t very popular for mainstream music. There is so much to the violin that I think the world at large hasn’t been exposed to. I want to make the violin a staple in the mainstream industry in every culture and country.

First Look: Olly Sholot an St ars in Bel-Air

It’s been 31 years since The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air first aired, launching Will Smith’s acting career and putting the “Carlton Dance” on our pop culture radar. The show, which ran for six seasons on NBC, turned into a lasting mega-hit, and is now getting a reboot titled Bel-Air starring Houston’s own Olly Sholotan, who is reprising the role of Carlton Banks. Although Sholotan always knew he wanted to be in front of the camera, music was his first love. “I grew up in Nigeria until I was ten years old, and I wanted to be a musician. I listened to Michael Jackson and Motown records all the time,” says Sholotan. “My family had one Michael Jackson CD that I listened to constantly.” Fast forward several years, and Sholotan, who is still a musician at heart, is also a graduate of Kinder High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) and the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television. Although Bel-Air will be his television debut, he is a producer, songwriter, and performer who has starred in two movies. Sholotan first started thinking about Bel-Air when Morgan Cooper, a Fresh Prince superfan, created a YouTube trailer for a new darker version of the show, which went viral. He then learned Will Smith was on board as an Executive Producer for a reboot based on the viral video and called his management team to get him an audition. “I never thought I would be cast as one of the main characters, but I knew I wanted to be on the

series even if it was just a recurring role as a pizza delivery guy,” says the actor who currently lives in Los Angeles. “I auditioned, got a callback, did a couple of chemistry reads, and found out I got the part. It was one of the coolest experiences of my life.” From all accounts, Bel-Air will be a very different version of the original sitcom. Although all the original characters will be represented, the youthful pop energy is replaced by a much darker and grittier take on their different points of view. “I can’t emphasize it enough, this is a completely different show. It is a tear-jerker, and we touch on some heavy subjects,” says Sholotan. “The original sitcom was from the point of view of Will Smith’s character. This version is as if you went into each character’s diary, but it definitely builds upon the legacy that we have been given.” Bel-Air, cast entirely over Zoom in the middle of the pandemic, will make its streaming debut on Peacock on Feb 13, 2022. It has already been picked up for two seasons, giving audiences a chance to fall in love with the new characters just like they did with the original show. “We have some big shoes to fill, but I think that everyone in the cast is genuinely very close, and we all support each other in our roles. We are standing on the shoulders of giants, and we can either let that intimidate us or motivate us. It is an honor to take the reins from such great performers, and I am so excited to hear what people think.”

Based in Houston, Hall is a jazz vocalist with several of the area’s top bands, including The Houston Jazz Band, The Texas Band, Mighty Pretty Mixtape & The Houston Jazz Band Orchestra. A graduate of the University of Houston, Hall worked professionally in musical theater and opera for several years before focusing solely on jazz music. She got her start with pianist Paul English and Marsha Frazier in 2004 and hasn’t stopped working since. “The first time I was given the opportunity to sing jazz, I was

bitten by the bug. The one thing that immediately struck me was that changing and growing is the goal,” says Hall. “Improvisation and deviation from tradition are encouraged. That was something I had never had the opportunity to experience creatively in the past, and it opened an entirely new world for me.” Hall, whose performance calendar is constantly full, has no plans to leave Houston. The wealth of musical venues and performers keep her grounded in the Bayou City. “Houston is a huge presence in the music world for several musical genres, and it shows especially in the jazz scene because as improvisers, we bring everything we know to the table.” tianahall.com

The already bustling CityCenter has added a new restaurant to its lineup. Daily Gather, a concept which centers around communal gatherings with a vibrant atmosphere, opened in January. The menu is full of shareable dishes inspired by nostalgic American classics with fun updates and influences from global cuisines represented in Houston. The full-service restaurant is open for lunch, dinner, and weekend brunch. Like its sister restaurant, Dish Society, Daily Gather will focus on fresh, sustainably sourced local food from purveyors like Atkinson Farms, Ives Creek Organics, 44 Farms, and Greenway Coffee Company. Shared plates, which make up much of the menu, make it easy for guests to enjoy a variety of dishes. Standouts include

cornbread elote, tuna aquachile, vadouvan-spiced whole roasted cauliflower, cacio e pepe fries, chilled and grilled oysters, deviled eggs, charred poblano guacamole, seasonal flatbreads, and a host of beautiful salads and vegetable-focused small plates that showcase local harvests. Guests will also enjoy a delicious entree menu, day to night drink offerings, as well as a complete brunch spread designed to serve a crowd. Daily Gather offers indoor and outdoor seating on their large patio overlooking CityCentre’s greenspace. Grab-and-go options are available from their refurbished Argentinian food truck - perfect for coffee and pastries in the morning and a cold brew in the evening. @dailygather

AND BABY MAKES THREE BUSY HOUSTON REALTOR LEXI MAREK AND HER HUSBAND MICHAEL NAVIGATE THEIR FIRST FEW MONTHS AS A NEW FAMILY.

Lexi Sakowitz-Marek and her husband Michael welcomed their first child, Kimble, in August of 2021. For most new families, the first year with their new baby is tough. Sleepless nights, endless diaper changes, and a steep learning curve can test the boundaries of any relationship. However, the Mareks seem to be taking the first few months as a family of three in stride. The busy couple, who met on a blind date and have been married since 2019, have traded in late nights at the office and their standing reservation at El Tiempo for relaxing cuddle time with Kimble. "Getting to know our sweet baby girl has been the joy of our life. We cherish our time together and love watching her grow. Seeing her develop a little personality has been incredible. She's such a smiley, happy girl," says Lexi, a COMPASS REALTOR who was recently named "20 Under 40 Real Estate Rising Stars" by HAR's Young Professionals Network. Along with parenting duties, flexibility is a skill that both Lexi and Michael, a lawyer with Vinson & Elkins, have had to master over

the past five months. Their social calendars revolve around Kimble's schedule, and the couple is admittedly grateful to have two sets of grandparents in Houston to help with the workload. Dinners together after Kimble goes to bed are a priority each evening, and Lexi says they have learned to focus on the smaller moments as a couple. "We are both admittedly workaholics, but we can recognize when we need to nurture our relationship more and put a special date night on the books." While long walks around the neighborhood, playing fetch with their dog, and reading to Kimble take center stage right now, the Mareks can't wait to immerse Kimble in everything Houston has to offer as she gets older. From philanthropic efforts to extracurricular activities, they look forward to being involved in the community. "Houston has such an amazing quality of life and emphasizes family, which we love. The Southern hospitality of every Houstonian also makes for such great neighbors. There's nowhere else we'd rather be."

Chop six ounces of semisweet chocolate, then transfer it and the butter to a pot; heat on low. Stir chocolate and butter until smooth. Whisk two eggs and two yolks with a pinch of salt, then add 1/4 cup of sugar and mix in a stand mixer until it has a light yellow color and becomes thicker in texture. Fold in the chocolate. Add flour

and mix in. Transfer the batter to buttered and floured ramekins. Bake at 450°F for six to eight minutes. Baking time will depend on the size of the ramekins you use. Let them sit for a minute before transferring them to a dessert plate. Sift with powdered sugar and add fruit or whipped cream.
