FETCHING SPECIAL MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME AS THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER COME TO A CLOSE, REMEMBER TO PAUSE AND SAVOR A LAST HOORAH WITH YOUR KIDS – AND PETS – WITH THIS SPECIAL ISSUE. For most Memorial households, our kiddos and furry friends represent the very heartbeat of our families, and we wouldn’t want it any other way, would we? Ironically as I wrap up this issue, it has been a little more than a week since I had to say goodbye to my precious 13-year-old dachshund rescue and copilot, Duncan Doolittle. My heart aches but as they say, life must go on. You will find his picture in place of my

MoveNation Dance Academy LOCATED IN SPRING BRANCH, MOVENATION DANCE ACADEMY OFFERS DANCE CLASSES FOR ALL AGES AND EXPERIENCE LEVELS.

JENNIFER SAN MIGUEL HAS BEEN DANCING SINCE SHE WAS THREE YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN TEACHING DANCE FOR MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS. She recently opened MoveNation Dance Academy and juggles being a mom, small business owner, and even has a job as a project manager/consultant. San Miguel shares how she manages it all. WHAT AGE GROUPS DOES MOVENATION DANCE ACADEMY TEACH? We offer classes for all ages and experience levels. We start as soon as they can walk in the Mommy & Me Pre-ballet class, introducing them to the classroom setting and core principles of dance. I have taught dancers as old as 72 and everything in between. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT DANCE INSTRUCTION? I love sharing the joy of dance with others, and I love that I can explain things in such a way that they can apply the instruction to their bodies. I am not just teaching movement; I teach discipline, confidence, resilience, patience, and life skills. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE PARENTS TO KNOW ABOUT STARTING THEIR CHILDREN IN DANCE? Young students may take weeks to feel comfortable in the new atmosphere and transition into independence. Parents should understand that it takes time to develop proper techniques, but eventually, all the building blocks and teaching techniques will be combined into a lightbulb moment for their child.

e g n s a r h c make ISABELLA BOONE ALONG WITH HER RESCUE DOG BALOO ARE ON A MISSION TO CHANGE THE STEREOTYPE OF BULLY BREED DOGS.

IN MANY PET ADOPTIONS, IT IS NOT CLEAR WHO IS SAVING WHO. Yes, the pet is rescued from an uncertain future, but in countless cases, they are destined to rescue their new owners, as well. Isabella Boone, who adopted Baloo in 2017, will readily agree this is true. Isabella met Baloo while volunteering at an animal shelter during her freshman year of college. The American Staffordshire Terrier and Red Heeler mix had such an impact on Isabella's emotional and mental health that she knew she had to adopt him. "Since I adopted him, we have been inseparable, and my life will never be the same," said Isabella. "He came into my life when I was at my lowest and reminded me what it was like to be happy again." Once Isabella got Baloo home, her real work began. She realized that people weren't as friendly with her new dog because many consider him a "bully breed." According to Isabella, she has daily interactions with people who are afraid of Baloo or think he is aggressive based

solely on the way he looks. "Baloo and I have worked hard to combat these stereotypes. As a result, he is Canine Good Citizen certified, is a tasktrained Service Dog, has various AKC trick titles, and is working hard at competing in both dock diving and lure course racing." Isabella also created a social media account to share her adoption story and Baloo's daily adventures. Since then, it has turned into a platform where she combats the stereotype about bully breeds by creating a new narrative. Because of her hard work, Baloo has one of the largest accounts for bully breeds and rescue dogs on Instagram. "Gaining a following wasn't my main goal, but it did help me accomplish some of my other ones. I wanted bully breeds to be included in more pet-related campaigns, I wanted to challenge breed-specific legislation, and more than anything, I wanted people to see these dogs as pets, not monsters. Baloo has become one of the most popular faces in bully breed advocacy, and my goals to challenge the stereotypes of his breed have grown even bigger." @bully.baloo

KATHERINE WHALEY SHARES WHY SHE CHOSE TO LEAVE HER TELEVISION CAREER TO STAY HOME WITH HER YOUNG SON. ARTICLE GABI DE LA ROSA | PHOTOGRAPHY LAUREN HOLUB 24

Memorial Lifestyle | August 2021

A

S ABC13’S EYEWITNESS NEWS TRAFFIC ANCHOR,

KATHERINE WHALEY HAS SEEN HOUSTONIANS THROUGH FREEWAY CONSTRUCTION, MOBILITY INITIATIVES IN THE CITY, AS WELL AS CATASTROPHIC EVENTS LIKE HURRICANE HARVEY. She was our eyes on the road through it all until earlier this year when she decided to give her 17-year television career a break to stay home with her young son William. We sat down with Whaley to talk about her decision to leave television and what comes next for her and her family.

WHEN DID YOU KNOW IT WAS TIME TO LEAVE YOUR CAREER ON TV TO BE A FULL-TIME MOM? I love being a mother, and time with my son is invaluable. Like so many other working mamas, my whole world was disrupted during the pandemic, but it was an opportunity to take a step back and look at big picture goals and priorities. The epiphany for me was that I loved my career, but I wanted a more flexible lifestyle that would allow more time with my family, and I am beyond blessed to have been able to make that move. Those pandemic work-fromhome days were hectic (juggling live shots between nursing, researching the next day’s stories, maintaining a household). Still, I cherished being at home and available for my family and wanted more. I feel fortunate I can choose to transition away from

full-time,

traditional

employment,

especially considering that women have been disproportionately affected by job loss during the pandemic. IT HAS BEEN SEVERAL MONTHS SINCE YOU LEFT; HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR DECISION NOW? I am 100% here for it! Since leaving television, I have been hired on various projects, including emceeing and event publicity. I have enjoyed working “a-la-carte” — I can keep my TV performance and writing skills fresh but still choose to work when and how I want. The best part is setting my schedule and working around my family’s needs (and my sleep!). I am fortunate.

MOMENTS THAT MATTER (CONTINUED)

DO YOU THINK YOU WILL EVER RETURN TO WORK IN A FULL-TIME CAPACITY? Sure! Anything is possible. If my family needed me to return to work for any reason, I would be ready. Right now, I am relishing family time, but the wheels are constantly spinning. I love cooking, so perhaps a TV cooking show one day? A girl can dream! Katherine Whaley @katherine_whaley

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER MOMS WHO ARE THINKING ABOUT LEAVING THEIR JOBS TO STAY AT HOME? I would advise women to consider how to start building new peer networks outside the workforce. Is there a regular volunteer/church/worship opportunity you can explore? A new gym or yoga class to join? This provides a community in the space where work may have left a void. Also, have a conversation with your spouse or partner about how transitioning home changes the roles within the relationship. It was essential to me to know that even though I was giving up my regular employment, I had no less power to make decisions (financial or otherwise) for our family, and I am grateful this was a battle I didn’t have to fight. Also, just like the working world, some days will be easy, some days will be hard!
