WHAT STARTED OUT IN 1941 AS A SMALL RESTAURANT IN WHAT IS NOW THE RIVER OAKS AREA HAS BECOME THE OLDEST FAMILY-OWNED AND OPERATED TEX-MEX RESTAURANT IN HOUSTON. At the time, there were only a handful of Mexican restaurants in the city, and while Raul Molina and his wife Mary opened their restaurant to create a better life for themselves and their children, they would unknowingly become one of the founding families of Tex-Mex cuisine in the fourth largest city in the United States.

Molina’s Cantina is responsible for introducing Houstonians to Tex-Mex classics like chili con carne, enchiladas, and guacamole. Many of the same dishes that were on the menu in 1941 are still made from scratch daily and prepared in small batches using fresh ingredients. The restaurant has received many accolades over the years for signature dishes like the Original “Jose’s Dip,” named for a former waiter who began adding spicy taco meat to his customer’s queso. Guests loved it so much that it not only became a menu staple, but remains a best-selling favorite to this day.

The lifespan of a typical restaurant is five years Molina’s Cantina has exceeded that by several decades and is now bringing the fourth generation of family restaurateurs into the fold. “It’s hard to believe that, after eighty wonderful years, our grandparents’ dream is still alive and well,” says Ricardo Molina, third-generation Molina’s Cantina co-owner with brothers Raul, III, and Roberto. “A lot has changed since 1941, but we are so blessed to continue serving many of the same families three and even four generations later. JONATHAN LEVINE HAS CONNECTED WITH HOUSTON IN A WAY MANY DO - THROUGH FOOD. The Northeast transplant landed in Houston in 2003 when several family members moved, and he followed. After enjoying the food scene for several years, Levine began catering and doing personal chef work in 2006.

Having owned three restaurants in Cape Cod, Levine was not eager to get back into the restaurant business. But when he did, he garnered a loyal and consistent Houston following quickly. “The catering clientele that we worked with kept saying they wanted a place where they could bring in their wine and eat my dad’s cooking,” says Levine’s daughter, Jessica. “In 2008, we opened a small restaurant with ten tables, and that is how it all started.”

Fast forward 13 years, and Levine has not only evolved but made a name for himself in the dynamic Houston food landscape. In addition to the original restaurant, which closed in May of this year, Levine

INGREDIENTS + 18 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips + 14 ounces of sweetened condensed milk + 1 cup of toasted pecan pieces (or nut of your choice)

METHOD 01 Microwave 18 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips with 14 ounces of sweetened condensed milk until melted. Microwave in one minute intervals, and as it gets closer to being done, 15-second intervals until it is completely melted.

02 Mix in 1-cup toasted pecan pieces (or nuts of your choice).

03 Pour into an 8’ x 8’ Pyrex dish lined with parchment paper.

Chill 1-2 hours until firm. Cut into small squares. Enjoy!
