Pets FOR MANY OF US, AUGUST IS A BITTERSWEET TURNING POINT IN THE CALENDAR YEAR. Summer freedom is drawing to a close, and the school bells will be ringing any day now. While the lazy days of sipping cool beverages poolside may be numbered, this month brings a sense of renewal. New routines, new clothes, and new school supplies often come to mind in August. And because we dedicated an issue to both the men and women of our community earlier this year, it would only be right to celebrate some of our cutest residents: pets! There’s no doubt we have some serious pet lovers in Memorial. Meet a few of them (and their four-legged friends), and you’ll find what makes the bond between humans and animals so special. We also whipped up a recipe for homemade dog treats so you can spoil your loyal companions. When’s the last time you had family portraits taken? C. Baron Photography shares some tips for styling the most successful photo

OUR TOWN Four-Legged Family Members

ARTICLE ABBY STRICKLAND PHOTOGRAPHY C. BARON PHOTOGRAPHY

FAMILIES COME IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZES, AND SOME FAMILIES COME WITH PETS. So, when it comes time to taking family pictures, our pets can easily steal the spotlight. C. Baron Photography launched in 2011 by a husband and wife team that was searching for a creative outlet. They too are true pet lovers as their company was named after their beloved dogs, Charlie and Baron. At the time, C. Baron Photography felt like the storytelling style we’ve all come to know in wedding photography wasn’t that common, and it was something missing from the market. C. Baron Photography now has an amazing team of photographers who have worked hard to capture images that tell a story—ones that can be told over and over again for years to come. Having now photographed more than 400 weddings, it’s no surprise to C. Baron Photography that many owners want to include their furry family members in the pictures too. After all, they are part of the family. C. Baron Photography doesn’t just photograph weddings; they also do editorials, portraits, branding work and much more. They had an amazing opportunity to work with celebrity event planner

posing tips

Be sure not to wear matchy-matchy clothes. Choose something that has similar color tones and styles that complement one another.

Don’t raise your chin toward the camera. This causes your eyes to look much smaller.

Avoid bright colors or prints.

Always keep a slight bend in your knees.

Make sure you are comfortable in the clothes you choose—if you’re not, it will show in the photos.

Leave the posing to the photographer. They are the professional and know what works best in front of the camera.

His distinctive work truly captures the personalities of his clients’ furry family members and gives them a piece of artwork they will cherish for a lifetime. Kermit has been an artist for more than 30 years now but gives credit to his painted cattle displayed at the 2001 Houston “Moovelous” Cow Parade benefiting the Texas Children’s Hospital for putting him on the map. Recognized for his active participation with various charities, Kermit has used his art to bring joy, raise awareness and give back to his community in any way he can. But Kermit hasn’t stopped there. Near and dear to his heart are his art therapy classes he teaches for cancer patients. Kermit has witnessed firsthand the powerful effects art has on the patients. Their anxiety decreases, and they become so captivated by being creative that they forget about their current circumstances. The art not only allows them to express themselves but to be transported away by their creations into a peaceful state of mind. Through his art, Kermit is able to continue his work as a philanthropist and have a positive and lasting influence in our community. KermitArt.com

BARK IT UP If your dog doesn’t settle for plain, kick these treats up a notch by incorporating some of these dog-safe fruits and vegetables: + BANANAS—In moderation, bananas are great treats for dogs. Just beware of the sugar content—they shouldn’t be part of your dog’s regular diet. + BLUEBERRIES—Blueberries are a superfood full of antioxidants and fiber. Try these as a substitute to training treats. + CARROTS—Carrots are a great low-calorie snack high in beta-carotene and fiber. Chomping on them is also great for your dog’s chompers. + GREEN BEANS—Full of fiber and low in calories, plain green beans are great prepared any way! + WATERMELON—Filled with vitamins and potassium, this summer treat is sure to be your pup’s new favorite. For those dog days of summer, watermelon is a great way to keep your dog hydrated! Just be sure to remove the rind and seeds. Learn more about safe food for four-legged friends at AKC.org.

INSPIRED BY THE TEACHERS AND COACHES IN OUR COMMUNITY PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR CHILDREN’S LIVES. They spend a great deal of time both in the classroom and on the court. So, how do they manage to do all that and still find time for themselves? Keely West has some answers. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING AND COACHING? Seeing first hand a child’s reaction when they reach a goal they have been working towards—the look on their faces when they achieve it is truly priceless. HOW DO YOU FIND BALANCE? It’s not easy, but I find planning in advance and being organized help so much. I make sure I use multiple resources as well as having great coworkers I can go to for support. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO BECOME A TEACHER? Teaching is not for the faint of heart. You will have days where you feel stretched too thin, but then you remember your students count on you, and you find a way to show up every day for them.
