The Explore Issue

Let’s Explore

We live in an efficiency and productivity-obsessed age. I admit, I fall into the trap sometimes — the trap of believing the only things worth doing are those for which I can make an exact calculation of the time, effort, and investment it will cost me. The things that result in the highest level of control and least amount of uncertainty.

The truth is, that is really a sad and unfulfilling way to go through life.

We must leave some room for exploring, for trying new places and things, for being a beginner, even for getting lost. It is those times that are unstructured and open-ended where the space exists for connections to be made, friendships to be fostered, and trust to be built.

We hope this issue encourages you to carve out time for exploration and step away from the routine of daily life. Take that trip you’ve been dreaming about. Get lost in a trail or a good book. Make space for the things that truly matter to you — the ones that too often fall to the bottom of your to-do list.

Let this be your reminder: the world is wide and waiting, and the moments that nourish your spirit are not luxuries — they’re essential. Whether it’s a weekend away or an hour of uninterrupted solitude, give yourself the gift of stepping outside your schedule.

Happy exploring,

July 2026

EXPLORING A NEW ERA OF ROOFING

ROOF MAXX IS HELPING HOMEOWNERS EXTEND THE LIFE OF AGING ROOFS WITHOUT THE COST OF FULL REPLACEMENT.

As homeowners look for smarter, more sustainable ways to maintain their homes, roof restoration is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about alternatives to full roof replacement. And at the center of that conversation is Roof Maxx, a company pioneering a plant-based treatment designed to extend the life of aging asphalt shingles — often saving homeowners thousands of dollars in the process.

For local Roof Maxx dealer Nathan Gray, the path into the roofing industry wasn’t exactly traditional. Before joining the company three years ago, he worked as a

die maker — a career rooted in precision and craftsmanship. But the opportunity to become part of a growing national brand with long-term potential immediately stood out.

“Roof Maxx has a large national presence and will become a household name,” he says.

That momentum makes sense. With rising material costs, growing environmental awareness, and homeowners looking to maximize the lifespan of their investments, Roof Maxx offers something refreshingly practical: a way to restore a roof rather than immediately replace it.

Unlike surface-level coatings or sealants, Roof Maxx works from the inside out. The treatment uses a plant-derived oil made with Soy Methyl Ester Emulsion (SMEE) technology, which replenishes the petrochemical oils asphalt shingles naturally lose over time due to sun exposure, weather, and aging. Once sprayed onto the roof, the formula penetrates through the granules and into the asphalt layer, helping shingles regain flexibility and resilience. The result is more pliable, less brittle shingles that are better able to withstand harsh weather conditions, and less likely to crack or break.

Lab testing has shown treated shingles experience improved impact resistance, including a 24% smaller hail depression size compared to untreated shingles. Independent fire testing also found treated shingles met ASTM E108 Class A fire resistance standards — the highest rating possible.

For homeowners, however, the appeal is often simpler: the process is fast, clean, and affordable. It begins with an estimate and an on-site roof assessment where a technician looks for cracked or damaged shingles, signs of water damage, holes, moss, algae, and other organic

“Delaying roof replacement with Roof Maxx can significantly reduce roofing material waste and lower carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions over time.”

contaminants. If needed, the technician will them perform minor tune-ups and repairs so your roof is ready for the application. Then, Roof Maxx’s science-backed roof treatment is applied — this typically takes two to four hours and then up to 72 hours to completely absorb. Every treatment comes backed by a fiveyear guarantee.

Timing-wise, nearly any season works except the coldest parts of winter, since shingles need to be above 37 degrees during application.

So how do you know if your roof might be a candidate? According to Roof Maxx, homeowners should start paying attention once a roof reaches the 10-year mark. Signs like granules collecting in gutters or near downspouts can indicate shingles are drying out and losing their protective oils.

Will Roof Maxx change the appearance of your roof? The simple answer is maybe. In some cases, the treatment may slightly darken your shingles, giving them a fresher appearance. However, this darker

shade typically fades gradually the first few months after application.

Beyond the financial benefits, Roof Maxx also appeals to homeowners interested in reducing waste. Research from Ohio State University found that delaying roof replacement with Roof Maxx can significantly reduce roofing material waste and lower carbon dioxide-equivalent emissions over time.

For homes with solar panels, the treatment has also been tested for compatibility. Even when exposed to concentrations far beyond normal real-world applications, treated roofing materials showed no significant swelling, structural damage, or mass change.

In a home improvement landscape often dominated by costly tear-offs and replacements, Roof Maxx is carving out a different lane — one focused on restoration, longevity, and helping homeowners get more life out of what they already have. Lights of Hope

UNITING AT MEDINA SQUARE FOR HOPE, REMEMBRANCE, AND CANCER ADVOCACY.

ARTICLE BY ERIN BAKA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANIE MUELLER
Stephanie Mueller

It’s hard to find someone whose life hasn’t been impacted by cancer in some way — whether through a personal diagnosis, the loss of a loved one, or standing beside someone during the fight of their life. Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce Membership and Events Coordinator Stephanie Mueller knows that impact all too well.

Her passion for advocacy and awareness has been shaped by the experiences of two important men in her life — her father, who survived prostate cancer, and her father-in-law, who lost his battle with colon cancer. Their journeys, combined with the countless stories she’s encountered through volunteer work, have inspired her commitment to support others facing cancer — a commitment that’s led her to partner with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) and bring an impactful event to the heart of Medina.

On Saturday, Aug. 29, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., the Medina Square Gazebo will glow with hope during the 2nd Annual Lights of Hope. As part of ACS CAN’s nationwide tribute event — now in its 16th year — the evening will honor those affected by cancer, including survivors, individuals currently in treatment, loved ones lost, and caregivers who have stood beside them through the journey.

The Square will be transformed into a moving display of illuminated tribute bags, each one serving as a personal tribute and public call for change. The goal of the event is to honor those impacted by cancer; advocate for increased research funding, improved quality of life for patients and families, and continued efforts to end

cancer as we know it; and bring the community together in a shared message that no one faces cancer alone.

To dedicate a personalized Lights of Hope bag, simply make a donation at the event and then use the art supplies to make it unique. For those unable to attend, visit  ACSCAN.DonorDrive.com/ Participants/MedinaMueller and make a donation. Every contribution of $10 will light another bag.

All donations to the nationwide Lights of Hope events fuel ACS CAN’s mission of advocating for evidence-based public policies that reduce the burden of cancer for everyone. Since its founding as the nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, ACS CAN has helped secure billions in cancer research funding, expand access to affordable health care, and advance prevention initiatives across the country.

Locally, Lights of Hope has received growing support from businesses and residents. Several local businesses are hosting fundraisers and partnerships leading up to the event, including the Coastal Christmas in July Fundraiser at Bella Moxie, Aladdin’s Medina Dine to Donate on August 12, and Cool Beans Medina’s August 29 fundraiser, where a portion of drink sales will benefit the cause. Throughout the summer, visitors can also purchase and decorate tribute bags at Bella Moxie in preparation for the event.

As the tribute bags illuminate the Square on the evening of August 29, they will create a powerful visual reminder that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a story worth fighting for. Through Stephanie’s dedication and the support of the Medina community, the event shines as a symbol of compassion, advocacy, and hope for a future without cancer.

AT GERVASI, LUXURY IS FOUND IN THE DETAILS, THE ATMOSPHERE, AND THE PEOPLE WHO BRING THE EXPERIENCE TO LIFE.

INSIDE THE GERVASI EXPERIENCE

At Gervasi Vineyard Resort & Spa, the experience begins long before a glass is poured or a room key is handed over. The property invites guests into a sense of discovery, where every winding path, vineyard view, and thoughtfully designed space feels like part of a larger exploration. What lingers

long after a visit is not only the beauty of the estate, but the people who have shaped it. Behind the atmosphere, the hospitality, and the feeling guests carry home are the women who have helped define Gervasi at every level.

For COO Gretchen Wendell, that understanding comes from experiencing the resort from the ground up. She began her career behind the bar and now oversees operations across the property. Her perspective is rooted in proximity to the guest experience and an understanding of how even the smallest moments can shape lasting memories.

“Employees who are guest-facing notice preferences and patterns of guests over time,” Gretchen said. “Often when you ask someone about a memorable experience anywhere, they want to describe how they felt.”

At Gervasi, hospitality is less about routine and more about anticipation. Every detail is intentionally designed to immerse guests in the moment and encourage them to slow down, wander, and experience the property through every sense.

“We are very intentional behind the scenes to create an environment where multiple senses are triggered at the same time,” Gretchen explained.

“Is the atmosphere aesthetically beautiful? Is the

“A BEAUTIFUL SPACE MAY SET THE INITIAL TONE, BUT TRULY MEMORABLE EXPERIENCES ARE BUILT THROUGH MEANINGFUL MOMENTS THAT MAKE EACH GUEST FEEL RECOGNIZED, VALUED, UNDERSTOOD, AND PERSONALLY CARED FOR.”

lighting and music right? What do you smell? How are you greeted?”

That layered sensory approach creates something unique for every visitor. Walking into The Still House, guests are immediately met with the aroma of coffee and distillery mash, while music, lighting, and conversation create an atmosphere that feels both energetic and intimate. It is the kind of place where exploration happens naturally, whether that means discovering a new wine, lingering lakeside at sunset, or uncovering a favorite corner of the 55-acre Tuscan-inspired estate.

For Director of Hotel & Resort

Operations Susan Montelone, the guest journey is equally personal. Originally hired as a host when the Bistro first opened, she has grown alongside the property, helping shape the culture that now defines the resort experience.

“A beautiful space may set the initial tone, but truly memorable experiences are built through meaningful moments that make each guest feel recognized, valued, understood, and personally cared for,” Montelone said.

That philosophy extends into every carefully considered detail, from heated tile floors in the Villas to the table settings at Olinda. Luxury at Gervasi is not rooted in excess, but in intention.

Behind it all is co-founder Linda Swaldo, whose original vision transformed a deteriorating barn into one of Canton’s most distinctive destinations.

“Standing there, I remember thinking, I hope we can restore this place into something people would actually want to come to,” Linda recalled. “My hope was that guests would see the charm and history in it.”

Today, that vision has become a destination defined by exploration, intention, and connection. Together, these women have shaped more than a resort. They have created a place that encourages guests to discover something new, linger a little longer, and return again.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

Strong

Independent

At 73, Debbie understands something many women don’t realize until later in life: Strength is the foundation for independence. After years of staying active, Debbie knew she needed more than random workouts to continue feeling strong, capable, and confident as she aged. At 2PiFit, she found structured strength training, expert coaching, and a supportive environment focused on helping her move well, build strength safely, and continue doing the things she loves. Today, Debbie is stronger, more confident, and committed to staying active for life. Because strength training isn’t just about fitness. It’s about maintaining freedom, energy, and independence as we age.
