I don’t know about you, but I love any opportunity to recognize the women who make my life more rich and beautiful. Our wives, mothers and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, all eyes are on moms… But it’s not just the biological mothers but the mother figures in our lives who have made an indelible impact on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors doing awesome things in our communities, pouring into our lives — making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our communities. A few women-owned businesses that we’ve touched on in this issue include Salon Evangelene, JK Gift Shop and The Interior Design Studio.
Also, I hope you’ll take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. It only takes a minute to brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Until next month,

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING AT THE AVIATOR?
I took this job and knew from the start this would be my forever home. From the families in ownership to our team members, we have an amazing group of people who truly
“AS A WOMAN IN THIS INDUSTRY, YOU MUST BE STRONG AND FEARLESS TO CLIMB THE LADDER.”
For the Women's Issue, it's been our pleasure to chat with The Aviator's general manager Sierra Thomas to learn more about her role, her background and what's to love about The Aviator.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AT THE AVIATOR AND HOW DID YOU FIND THIS JOB?
I've been working here for almost two years; my work anniversary is in September.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE DISHES ON THE AVIATOR’S MENU?
My favorite dishes... wow — this is a hard choice! I really love our braised short rib entree; this is a menu staple and definitely something you want to try! The preparation of the dish changes seasonally, keeping it fresh for returning guests.
care about providing great customer service, amazing food and an ambiance you can’t find anywhere else.
WHAT SETS THE AVIATOR APART FROM OTHER RESTAURANT CONCEPTS IN THE CLEVELAND AREA?
I think what really sets us apart is that we're both a restaurant and event center. We have five spaces to accommodate any party size, an amazing main level patio and a rooftop bar that's open seasonally.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE EXCITING EVENTS THAT THE AVIATOR HAS IN STORE FOR US THIS MONTH?
We have a special Mother’s Day Brunch planned. It’s really a beautiful event where families can gather and enjoy a meal together that they don’t have to prepare or clean up.
WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES THAT YOU’VE FACED AS A WOMAN WORKING IN THE FOOD AND BEVERAGE INDUSTRY AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
As a woman in this industry, you must be strong and fearless to climb the ladder. Don’t be afraid to stand up for what’s right and continually grow. I've learned every position in the industry, allowing me to sharpen my skillset and attain a deeper knowledge of the role each team member plays in sustaining a successful business.
WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL OR SOMEONE THAT YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
My role model is my boss, Khadar. He is an amazing leader who I have learned so much from. I completely changed my management style when I started working with him; he has shown me how to connect with our team in a way I had not done before. I have been able to take my career to the next level through working with him.
WHAT PIECE OF ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER YOUNG WOMEN WHO MAY WANT TO HOLD A SIMILAR POSITION TO YOURS IN THE FUTURE?
The best advice I could give to young women in the industry is to be confident and believe in your abilities because your perspective is valuable! Find mentors and seek guidance, support and opportunities. Build a strong network by connecting with others within the industry and stay passionate; loving what you do will drive you to success.

The tight-knit community of Medina rallied behind one of its own as efforts to secure a new service dog for Medina High School student, Vincie, gained momentum. Vincie, who has faced health challenges since birth, including a 13Q chromosomal deletion and mild cerebral palsy, recently lost his beloved service dog, Harper. Determined to help Vincie cope with his medical treatments, the Medina community sprang into action to raise funds for a new service dog.
"The Medina community has always had a special place in my heart” said Peter Mapp, Vice President of Metro Lexus. “As a long time resident and dog lover with two of my own, we heard about Vincie's need for a new service dog and it was only natural for us to step up and offer our support. That's what community is all about."
Metro Lexus joined the fundraising efforts with a generous $500 donation to Wags for Kids, a local nonprofit dedicated to matching service dogs with children in need.
LET JTS LANDSCAPING CREATE A TRANQUIL ESCAPE FOR THE MOTHER FIGURE IN YOUR LIFE
Celebrating 30 years of trusted expertise, JTS Landscaping stands as a beacon of excellence in Seville's landscaping industry. Dedicated to the year-round care and enhancement of outdoor areas, the Northeast Ohio business specializes in crafting personalized outdoor spaces that reflect the unique preferences and lifestyles of their clients.
From seasonal adornments to intricate lighting designs, tranquil water elements and sturdy hardscapes like patios and retaining walls, JTS offers a comprehensive range of services tailored to meet the diverse needs of both residential and commercial properties. Their unwavering commitment to excellence, innovation, and consistency has earned them a sterling reputation, with over 12,000 completed projects bearing testament to their unparalleled expertise. For those seeking to elevate and maintain their outdoor environments, JTS stands as the premier choice, delivering exceptional results that exceed expectations.
What sets JTS apart, according to Kristin Bishop, manager of seasonal décor and design, is their exceptional expertise in color scaping. Color scaping in landscaping is a technique that involves using color strategically to enhance the visual appeal and atmosphere of outdoor spaces.
One effective method of color scaping is incorporating lighting into landscaping designs. By strategically placing lights and using different colors, lighting can transform outdoor environments, adding depth, drama and visual interest.
Accent lighting is a popular technique in color scaping, where spotlights or uplights are used to highlight colorful plants, trees or architectural features. These lights draw attention to vibrant foliage, flowers or other elements, enhancing their colors and creating focal points in the landscape. Additionally, colored filters or lenses can be added to the lights so that they cast colors onto plants, hardscapes or water features, adding depth and dimension to the landscape.
Path lighting is another effective way to incorporate color into the landscape. Pathway lights with colored lenses can illuminate walkways, driveways or garden paths with subtle washes of color, enhancing the nighttime beauty of the landscape while providing safety and guidance for navigating outdoor spaces.
Underwater lighting is also popular for color scaping, with lights installed in ponds, fountains or water features to create a mesmerizing underwater glow and enhance the colors of aquatic plants and other elements. Additionally, silhouette lighting techniques can be used to create striking shadows and outlines of plants or architectural elements against walls or other surfaces, adding depth and drama to the landscape.
What's more, is that seasonal themes can be incorporated into color scaping designs, with different lighting colors and effects used to create festive holiday displays or to evoke a cozy atmosphere during autumn. Overall, color scaping with lighting offers endless possibilities for creativity and customization, and JTS is up for the challenge.
dream may be, JTS’s
In addition to their expertise in color scaping and traditional landscaping services, JTS stands out for their specialization in hardscapes and water features.
Hardscaping involves the use of non-living elements to enhance the functionality and aesthetic appeal of outdoor spaces. This may include the installation of features such as patios, walkways, retaining walls, fire pits and outdoor kitchens. JTS excels in designing and constructing these hardscape elements, using high-quality materials and skilled craftsmanship to create durable and visually stunning outdoor living areas.
With Mother’s Day this month, what better time to treat the mother figure in your life to a surprise from the JTS team? Dream it and they can do it. From vibrant flower arrangements to soothing water features, JTS can transform an outdoor space into a tranquil retreat where mom can relax and unwind. With
their expertise and attention to detail, JTS can make Mother's Day truly unforgettable.
Don't forget that now is also the perfect time to look ahead to your summer and fall landscaping and hardscaping needs. Dreaming of a custom water feature in your backyard? What about an elegant patio complete with a cozy fire pit? Or maybe a tranquil pond with a cascading waterfall is what you have in mind. Whatever your dream may be, JTS's unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction makes them the preferred choice for homeowners and businesses alike who seek to elevate their outdoor spaces with the timeless beauty of hardscapes and water features.

“We have women from almost every decade working with us.”
— EVANGELENE BROWN
Salon Evangelene is one of those staple Northeast Ohio businesses that many of us have come to know and love since it opened in August 2001. Over the years, owner and master stylist Evangelene Brown has assembled an expert team that offers unparalleled beauty services.
"Our team is made up of women from almost every decade, ages 16 to 78," says Evangelene. "We enjoy the sage advice from the mature gals and the younglings keep us on our toes."
Salon Evangelene is especially active in training younger generations of stylists, which is why some of its team members are as young as 16. In particular, the salon offers an internship program that provides extra hands-on training for students in beauty school.
"We take [them] in and provide extra training so that they know what to expect after they finish school," says Evangelene. "Our goal is to give back to younger generations through the internship program so
that the students feel set up for success in the beauty industry."
One former intern and now assistant, Ana, says: “The entire team is eager to help me learn. I am beyond grateful for my intern experience here. I look forward to all the opportunities Salon Evangelene offers to grow my career."
Evangelene's team offers a full menu of beauty services. As a salon, haircut, color, balayage, styling and extensions are some of the core services that are offered. In addition, Salon Evangelene offers facials, nail services like manicures and pedicures, therapeutic massages, hot stone massages, and waxing services. We'd also be remiss if we didn't mention Salon Evangelene's premium hair treatments like keratin smoothing and conditioning.
To learn more about Salon Evangelene, see the salon's full menu of services and to make an appointment, visit SalonEvangelene.com . Salon Evangelene is located at 4018 Medina Rd., Ste. B, Medina.

Have you noticed how much has been going on around town lately? We're not just talking about the community events and programs — we're talking about the proj ects and developments, too.
Big things are in the works for small busi nesses like JK Gift Shop and The Interior Design Studio. Owners Julie McNabb and Katie Heinz, who sit on the Main Street Medina Design Committee, worked with the city and investors to get plans for a bou tique hotel approved through the Medina Historic Preservation Board. The hotel — with the moniker Legacy Hotel — will be located on the south side of Medina Square and will serve as a valuable opportunity to showcase Medina as a premier destination.
What's important to note about Legacy Hotel is that it won't be a national chain. Further, the 75-room inn will sport a brick exterior to match neighboring buildings along South Court Street. It will also be the first hotel downtown Medina has seen since the 1950s.
Julie says that the intention behind the hotel is to support small businesses: "Everyone loves small, locally owned stores, and the Medina community has been so supportive over the years. Large projects like the hotel will increase sales, which in turn let us as busi ness owners invest back into the community."
The Main Street Medina Design Committee is also working on the South Town Design Plan — a culmination of con cepts derived from district stakeholder meetings, the city's Comprehensive Plan and public sessions with neighbor hood residents, business property own ers and visitors. According to the Main Street Medina website, this plan focuses on three priority areas: gateway devel opment, Mill Street pedestrian improve ments and gathering space. The next steps include seeking project funding.
“The hotel will serve as a valuable opportunity to showcase Medina as a premier destination.”
In addition to their involvement on the Main Street Medina Design Committee, Julie and Katie are members of other local government and community boards.
The duo also sits on the Main Street Medina Promotions Committee, which is responsible for planning all of the free community events like the Candlelight Walk and the Ladies Night Out programming.
"We love being involved in local groups so that we can continue to keep our community relevant. Medina wasn't named Ohio Magazine's best hometown in 2018 and 2019 by chance. Not to mention the fact that it was recognized by HGTV as one of the nation's best small towns to visit for Christmas," Julie says. "All of this takes effort and teamwork by everyone, including city representatives, the Greater Medina Chamber of Commerce and small businesses."
