To do a Valentine’s Day date out or enjoy a cozy night at home? To buy a card or just say a kind word? My husband and I tend to mix it up each year — we haven't yet formed a tradition around the holiday and enjoy being adventuresome with our celebrations.
One year, we had a lazy night in with takeout and a movie on the couch. Another year, I picked up ingredients to make one of my husband's favorite meals — seared scallops and risotto. Most recently, we enjoyed dinner at an Italian restaurant, sipping red wine and indulging in Caprese salad, cacio e pepe pasta and tiramisu.
Regardless of how you choose to celebrate, we hope the pages of this month’s magazine will help you do just that as we highlight what’s to love in Medina County. We've featured articles about Tru Barre, Blossom Bake Shoppe and more.
“Love local” means loving your local businesses and those in your community, but it also means loving what is near — those under your own roof included. So grab a coffee at Cool Beans Cafe and head home for a game night around the fire with the family. Or snag a bottle of wine and some cheese from Buehler's and indulge in a movie night.
Spread the love this month, and why not keep it going throughout the entire year. In the wise words of Desmond Tutu, "Your ordinary acts of love and hope point to the extraordinary promise that every human life is of inestimable value."
Until next month,

When it comes to loving local, this is a value that Tru Barre, a local barre studio with locations in Medina and Akron, embodies whole-heartedly. Owner Sue Costigan, a lifelong Akron resident and fitness professional of 38 years, has built the studio on values of wellness and inclusivity, welcoming individuals from all backgrounds and levels of fitness to help them achieve health and balance in both mind and body.
If you're not familiar with barre, you may be wondering: What type of fitness class is this anyways? And what makes it effective for training my mind and body?
Sue explains that barre is a unique method of exercise that combines elements of ballet, Pilates, flexibility and interval strength training. Further, it's low-impact — you're utilizing a ballet barre, exercise balls, light dumbbells and exercise bands. In class, you can expect to do a series of intervals that work different muscle groups through small movements and many reps.
"A big misconception with barre is that it's dance or ballet, when in reality it's a strength training class," Sue says.
To welcome first-time visitors, Sue offers a seven-day trial for prospective members. She says, "We love when beginners show up with an open mind. Tru Barre is inclusive for all levels." Moreover, since barre is a low-impact workout, it is ideal for adults of all ages and each workout can be tailored to individual needs with modifications easily provided by Sue's team of expert instructors.
What do you need to attend a barre class? All of the class equipment is provided at Tru Barre (mats, dumbbells, etc.), so you'll only need to bring a water bottle, comfortable fitted attire (like a t-shirt and leggings) and grippy socks (these can also be purchased inside Tru Barre's boutique if you don't already have some).
Some of the class types that Tru Barre offers are Mixed Barre (a 60-minute class that's perfect for all levels), Tru Flow (a barre class that incorporates yoga sequences) and Express (a fast-paced class that lasts 45 minutes).
After completing a one-week free trial — Sue says that this period of time typically results in three class visits — individuals can choose a membership that works for their schedule and wellness goals. New clients receive their first month of an unlimited class membership for $99. Then, it's $135 per month. Class pass packs are also available, as are student membership prices.
In addition to in-person classes, Tru Barre offers an on-demand video library that is perfect for those who want to try barre at home or maintain a workout routine while traveling. A membership to the video library can be purchased solo for $80 per month or $40 for two weeks. A studio membership combined with the on-demand video library membership is $199.
In addition to in-person classes and the on-demand video library, Tru Barre has an in-studio boutique (mentioned above as a great place to buy grippy socks for class). The boutique offers chic athleisure goods.

I was married 13 years ago, saying “I do” in a pair of jeans, in a gazebo in the woods, my dogs acting as best man and maid of honor. My ceremony was intimate consisting of me, my husband and our wedding officiant. Whenever I think of my wedding ceremony, I smile. The officiant’s simple, elegant ceremony made my wedding day memorable. Although I can’t remember every word said, I can remember the way I felt. My small, easy ceremony was fitting for me and my husband.
That memory inspires me in my small business, Vows by Valerie.
Who am I? I am your local wedding officiant who proudly calls Medina County home. My love of writing comes from my grandma who specialized in writing poems for any occasion: school plays, new babies, a snowy day. Whenever I read my grandma’s poetry, I am reminded that words are extraordinary. They capture love and evoke emotion. Words express feelings and build connections. This is especially true of words spoken on a wedding day. I keep this in the front of my mind as I craft wedding ceremonies. What type of wedding is right for you?
A large wedding can be rooted in tradition and current trends. It is an action-packed day accommodating a higher guest count with most following the same flow. It takes time to plan and can be expensive; but is a great choice for those who want a big experience and party!

“The best feature of a micro ceremony or elopement is that they can take place anywhere.”
Smaller weddings are like showing a rare item to only a few special people. Micro Ceremonies are calmer, more relaxed. There is less pressure on the couple and family, putting focus on the day YOU want to have, not the day guests are expecting you to have. Fewer people permit the couple time to interact with each guest, emphasizing quality over quantity. The attire can be upscale or casual and the day will allow your personality to shine through, in details large and small.
Perhaps, like my wedding, a Simple “I do” is for you — my most intimate service that is just the three of us capturing your vow and commitment. People need to get married for a myriad of reasons. Life events happen in which a marriage may need to be expedited or spontaneous. A bride and groom in a private elopement? That’s where I come in. I am here. I am local.
The best feature of a micro ceremony or elopement is that they can take place anywhere. Medina County plays host to an array of non-venue spaces: gazebos to Metroparks, the Medina Square to lake views, historic settings to first date spots and breweries to wineries. Sometimes the best location is
- Valerie Hazlettthe comfort of your own home or backyard — talk about love and local!
As you plan your wedding, keep in mind a good officiant does more than legally marry you. They express what’s in your heart in that special, amazing moment and create a memory to be cherished. It would be my honor to officiate your lifetime promise to each other. Standing alongside a couple through one of the most important moments in their lives is amazing. I don’t take it for granted.
Whether your wedding day is simply for two, or for a gathering, large or small, I’ve got you covered. Your day should be special, and I will do my best to make it memorable and to ensure you remember the love you feel. I accommodate both non-denominational and faith-based couples and would be honored to be your wedding officiant.
