10th Annual Medina Bee Festival On July 21, the Medina Library hosted the 10th Annual Medina Bee Festival. The festival provided family-friendly education about the importance of bees. There were many different activities and interactive booths set up both inside and outside the library including fun bee crafts, a balloon artist, Beeswax comic creator John Martin and much more.

A TRIP BACK IN TIME In honor of Medina's Bicentennial celebrations, the Medina Freemasons Lodge 58 opened a time capsule that had been untouched since 1924. According to The Medina Gazette, the Freemasons opened the time capsule in the city's Uptown Park on July 7, and inside was a 1923 Medina County Farm Bureau report, a financial statement from a savings and loan company showing $3,753 in cash on hand, an October 21, 1924, copy of the Medina County Gazette, a gavel used by the master of the former Medina Masonic Temple, several black and white photographs, a silver dollar and a few buffalo nickels.
MEDINA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SENDS 20,000 MEALS TO THOSE IN NEED In July, members of the Medina Presbyterian Church packaged and sent 20,000 meals to people around the world. The church worked with Rise Against Hunger, a nonprofit organization that provides meals to those in need through mobilization, crisis response and community empowerment.

THEIR “ACCIDENTAL COMPANY.” It’s what Melissa and Rick Hinnant call Grace & Lace— their successful fashion company that bloomed from great tragedy and a pair of boot socks. Rick owned a landscaping company, and Melissa was in real estate. They decided it was time to slow down and start a family, but surprisingly to them, this took more time than they expected. After years of trying, Melissa finally had a healthy pregnancy, and the two were on their way to fulfilling a lifelong dream.

“One day, I was inspired to make a pair of boot socks for myself that had lace on the top of them peeking out of my boots,” Melissa says. “They took me eight hours to make and were a pain in the butt—I swore I’d never make another pair again. However, every time I wore them, women—total strangers—would stop me to ask where I bought these socks.” Rick encouraged Melissa to sell them online, where people fell in love with both the socks and the story behind them. WHEN LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER AND BAKER, KENI SCHERBINSKI, THINKS BACK ON HER CHILDHOOD, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR HER TO FORGET THE MOMENTS SHE SPENT WITH HER GRANDMOTHER, BAKING COUNTLESS DELICIOUS ITEMS TOGETHER. "The first thing I ever learned how to bake was bread," she recalled. "Before an age I can even remember, my grandmother would pull over a stool to the counter and let me have at it. I thought it was great because I could get messy!" Today, Scherbinski owns Honey Bee Bakery in downtown Medina, and her love for baking is a direct result of those shared times spent with her hard-working grandmother all those years ago. "My grandmother was a sassy motorcycle momma. She was a professional skilled laborer (plumber), a seamstress for her family and a darn good baker. She made everything from bread to wedding cakes," said Scherbinski. "I learned so much from her," she continued. "She taught me not only how to bake, but also how to cook, sew, embroider, crochet...and of course, how to be sassy as well!" If you haven't yet visited Honey Bee, they have a wonderful location that they call home. It sits directly in the center of Public Square on Court Street in the Towne Square Commons arcade. For those that call Medina home, you know that there is a special feeling you get when you're down at the square, surrounded by all those old, historical buildings that are occupied with quaint, homey and successful local businesses like Scherbinski's. As you enter Honey Bee, you are immediately welcomed by the sweet bakery smell that constantly lingers near the entrance of the arcade. The aroma of fresh baked cookies, cupcakes and macarons perfectly combines with the many CONTINUED >

types of coffees, lattes and espressos that Honey Bee has to offer, resulting in a luscious smell that beckons you farther into the bakery. When you approach the front counter, you quickly realize that if you don't already know what you are in the mood for, you are about to be overwhelmed with a wide variety of baked goods presented in the display case. Luckily, it didn't take me more that a few seconds to zone in on a tray of chocolate brownies...my weakness. I knew I had to have one despite thinking that when I came into the bakery, I would try one of their specialties: sugar cookies or a cinnamon roll. The brownie was everything I expected and Sugar cookies in all shapes and sizes.

As I looked towards the rear of the bakery, it was impossible not to notice the flurry of activity that was taking place in the kitchen. Back there was Scherbinski, along with a few of her fellow employees, working diligently on, presumably, the many wedding and birthday cakes that were set to go out for the weekend. I watched her give directions to one employee as she carried a fresh baked item over to a decorating table. Meanwhile, another employee emerged from the back, bringing out a fresh baked batch of cookies that were sure to sell in no time at all. Scherbinski was definitely in her element– happy to be preparing delicious baked goods for others to enjoy. "We make everything right here–with the exception of our bagels that come to us from New York–from scratch. That includes all of our icings and even things as small as our lady fingers. We use my old family recipes, my husband’s family recipes and our own unique recipes as well," said Scherbinski. "We take a lot of pride in making everything with our own hands here." After paying for my coffee and brownie, I chose a secluded little area to sit down near the large front windows that overlook Public Square. I sat and watched people hustle along the sidewalk in front of the bakery and took a special interest in a group of boy scouts that were milling about across the street near the gazebo in the center of the square. ANYONE WHO KNOWS EVEN A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MEDINA, OHIO, KNOWS THAT YOU CANNOT TELL IT'S HISTORY WITHOUT TALKING ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF ROOT CANDLES. The company was founded in 1869 by Amos Ives (A.I.) Root, a pioneer in beekeeping. He published what is often called, "The Beekeeper's Bible", or The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture. (His business was originally dedicated to the production of beekeeping supplies.) Eventually, it moved towards selling honey and then in 1928, The Root Company made its main changed its focus to the production of candles made with, what else, beeswax. Today, Root Candles does business all over the world, selling over 20 million candles per year. They are also the largest supplier of liturgical candles for the Catholic Church in the US. 26

So how did a small local company turn into one of America's leading candle makers? Ironically, that can be answered by comparing the business to the industrious spirit of the honey bee. The term "busy bee" can certainly be used to describe founder A.I. Root, who discovered his fascination with bees when a swarm of them infested the front window of his jewelry store in downtown Medina in 1865. The official History of Root Candles video on the Root Candles website describes A.I. as an "entrepreneur, innovator, author, publisher, apiarist, envisionary and humanitarian." The words curious, fascination and passion are also used abundantly when talking about this amazing man. It's incredible, yet unsurprising, to think that A.I. Root was also close friends with two American icons, Helen Keller and the Wright Brothers. As a matter of fact, Root personally witnessed the first complete circle flown in a heavier-than-air "flying machine" by Wilbur Wright in 1904. His eyewitness account of the event was presented to the Scientific American Magazine for publication, but astonishingly, they declined because they felt that "it did not really happen and, even if it did, it had no commercial value." Root knew that the event needed to be documented so he took matters into his own hands and published the article himself in his beekeeping magazine, Gleanings in Beekeeping, in 1905. The original copy of the article and the magazine is now on display at the Smithsonian Museum. Today, Root Candles is an industry-leading, family-owned company renowned for it's innovative ideas and for producing candles of the the highest quality. The company is now led by Brad Root, who is a fifth generation descendant of the founder. Over the past 150 years, the Root family has continually focused on the values of honesty, integrity, hard work and staying true to the qualities that have made them the producers of "The Best Candles, Made in America Since 1869." It goes without saying that Medina is proud to call Root Candles their own! Inside the 22,000 square foot historical A.I. Root building at 623 W. INGREDIENTS + 4 apples, cored
+ 2 tsp sugar
and thinly sliced
+ Optional: caramel
+ 1 tsp cinnamon
dipping sauce
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 225⁰F. 2. Line baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Place thinly sliced apples on baking pan, making sure slices are evenly spaced and do not touch. (You will have to do a few batches or use more than one baking pan.) 4. Combine cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl. 5. Sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture on apples. (You may have extra.) 6. Bake for 1½ hours and then flip apples. 7. Bake for another 45 minutes-1 hour or until apples are crispy. 8. Remove pan and let apple chips cool. 9. Serve plain or with caramel dipping sauce. Store in an airtight container for up to one week. 34
