All auto detailers use different types of wax products when they detail their customersâ€™ vehicles. For the past nine years, Nip Tuck has used premium wax doing their standard detail. ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES "MY FAVORITE TIME WITH THE MAINTENANCE END OF LANDSCAPING IS WHEN I'M OUT THERE WITH MY HANDS IN THE DIRT PLANTING FLOWERS," REMINISCES KRISTIN BISHOP, OFFICER MANGER/MAINTENANCE MANAGER OF JTS LANDSCAPING IN SEVILLE. "When it's May and the sun is shining... a beautiful day is especially accented by those gorgeous annuals that really make the colors of the landscape pop." Landscaping is in Kristin Bishop's blood. She and her brother Joe Pavlovicz, Owner of JTS Landscaping, started working for a local garden center in their youth. Their time there sparked a passion, and Pavlovicz went on to establish JTS Landscaping in 1994. "I began my adult life trying different careers," explains Bishop. "I have been with JTS Landscaping since 2006. I like to say that I came back to it, This was meant to be my industry." Since 1994, JTS Landscaping has made a name for themselves as a design-build firm. Their attention to detail, passionate and creative workers, and family-oriented atmosphere has allowed them to beautify landscapes across Northeast Ohio. "We'll come out when a customer calls, walk around the house, discuss what their needs are, what the designers thoughts are, and then the designer puts it to paper," she says. "Of course, we hope to install it at that point. But design and installation is only one of the many services we provide." About four years ago, JTS Landscaping began providing maintenance services. That includes mowing, weed pulling, snow removal, and even Christmas light displays in the winter. Each crew tackles an independent task, allowing them to hone their skills and become experts of their craft. "We have a crew that does Landscaping, a crew that does hardscaping, and then our maintenance team," Bishop says."We do everything on the outside of your home as far as maintenance, flower planting, lighting... anything that you can think of as far as landscaping. If you can dream it, we can build it." GROWING YOUR OWN "I don't think people realize that they can call us and work with a designer in regards to designing a raised garden bed," she says. "We'll bring in really high-quality top soil and manure. We can also install fences, so we will set you up for a successful season of growing. "Last year we designed a raised garden bed with a hardstone walkway through it, and it's fenced all the way around with gates. Gardens can provide a dreamy getaway on top of providing you fresh goods for your dinner table." MEDINA COUNTY IS A SPLENDID PLACE TO CALL HOME. Its landscape is breathtaking, its residents are friendly, and life in general is laid back here. However, while the county was once largely rural, much of that space now features neighborhoods and smaller yards. This spring, don't let a petite plot of land stop you from growing your own goods! There are plenty of green goods that can thrive in pots and planters. Urban gardening, as this is known, is rising in popularity. It is not uncommon to see planters displayed on balconies and windows, and oftentimes you'll discover all sorts of herbs within. It's easy to micro-garden all across the region. Here are some tips to get you started: CHOOSE A POT OR PLANTER THAT WORKS FOR YOU. Flower pots can be practical or decorative, brand new or upcycled. If you are trying your hand at urban gardening for the first time, a plastic planter or pot may be a great choice for you. These are often very affordable, so if you find that urban gardening is too much work and you do not wish to repeat it next year, you won't lose a fortune. Plastic planters heat and cool faster than terracotta, so if you are in a particularly sunny location, there is less potential for damage to your plants. Terracotta or ceramic pots and planters have the potential to be gorgeous, expanding your design possibilities if you are looking for an urban garden that is both chic and practical. Terracotta is porous, though, so you may want to look for a glazed pot that will prevent the need for extra watering. Unlike plastic pots, terracotta and ceramic tend to be heavier. If you live in a wind tunnel or a windier area, heavier pots may be a necessary accessory for your urban micro-garden.

Wooden boxes, metal tins, and other upcycled household items have the potential to make a rustic-chic planter that's too adorable for words. However, if you're an antique collector like me, you should use caution when using something that's not meant to be a flower pot as a flower pot. Harsh chemicals or toxins may leak out of the object's preservatives, which you probably don't want to consume. A quick Google search can probably put to rest or validate any concerns you may have. And, of course, there are all kinds of new-fangled ways to make gardening modern. You may opt for a self-watering planter or an upside down planter. No matter what you choose, it's always wise to first consider how much work you are willing to put into a gardening project. Different veggies and herbs require different soil depths to flourish. While chives and basil may only require a depth of about four inches, other greens such as parsley, rosemary, and dill may require more like ten inches of soil to flourish. There are many plants an herbs that can be grown in planters. Potatoes, tomatoes, and lettuce can blossom right on your deck. Local garden centers are a great resource for newbie gardeners. BE AWARE THAT NOT ALL VEGETABLES GROW WELL TOGETHER. As a general rule, large, deep containers are an easy way for newbies to begin honing their skills. Small containers are more likely to dry out, damaging your plants and requiring more maintenance on your end. If you do decide to plant multiple varieties of plants in a single planter, consider how much water, sunlight, and fertilizer each good needs. It may seem like carrots and dill, for example, are beneficial growing companions since they share a plant family. However, that means they'll be competing for the same nutrients. Tomatoes, on the other hand, are a great growing companion for carrots. Certain herbs and flowers can be added to your growing space to help repel pests. Marigolds, as you may know, repel certain species of insect. So, too, do chives and garlic. PLANTING SEEDS AT THE RIGHT TIME IS AN ESSENTIAL PART OF THE GROWING PROCESS. Around the end of this month, we'll start to notice that frost is no longer painting our lawn each morning. During this time, it's not a bad idea to start growing certain seeds (such as broccoli, cabbage, onions, and tomatoes) indoors and then transfer them into your outdoor planters. Many vegetables thrive when planted in late April and early May, so be aware of exactly when certain crops should be planted. Again, local garden centers are a great resource for choosing the right crops for your lifestyle. No question is a dumb question, especially when you are learning about something that is completely new to you. HAVE FUN WITH IT! Gardening doesn't have to be a chore. Encourage the kids to decorate planters, experiment with new recipes featuring your own homegrown goods, and aim to beautify your landscape. You don't have to have a lot of space to have an urban garden, so don't be afraid to let your creative side come out to play. This season is about to be a delicious one!

SMALL BATCH GARLIC & DILL PICKLES Makes 5 pint jars.

INGREDIENTS • 3–4 cucumbers • ½ red onion, sliced and cut in halves • 3 cups apple cider vinegar • 3 cups water • 4 tablespoons of sea salt • 2 teaspoons of organic cane sugar • 1 head of garlic • I bunch of fresh dill • 10 peppercorns • 1 tablespoon chili flakes • 1 tablespoon celery seeds

DIRECTIONS Slice cucumbers into wedges. Bring water and vinegar to boil; mix in sugar and salt. Stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and let cool. Meanwhile, prep the garlic. Peel the garlic cloves and then give them a smash. To assemble the jars, first, stack in the pickles, and save some room for the other flavors and vinegar mixture. Next, add in about four pinches of dill and two to three cloves of garlic. Add four or five halved, single slices of red onion per jar. Next, give a pinch or two of the celery seed and crushed pepper. Once the vinegar mixture has cooled, pour it into the jars making sure to cover the top of the cucumbers. Seal jars well. Refrigerate for one week. Pickles will keep four to six weeks.

He always knew he wanted to be a K9 Officer, so when Canton K9 Jethro was killed in the line of duty, King knew he could no longer sit back in silence. “Right now I work as a police dispatcher, though I am in the process of becoming a police officer,” King explains. “I’ve always had a dog, and recently my German Shepherd passed away. He thought he was a K9, and our bond was incredible. When he passed, and when Jethro passed, it made me want to get involved with police departments in a whole new way.” K9s of Valor was King’s way of assisting local police departments and keeping officers safe. Through this 501c3 nonprofit organization, he and his team of volunteers has delivered trauma kits, Narcan overdose kits, and care packages to local and national K-9 units. Many of those units rely on donations to buy supplies. “This is an incredible opportunity to impact the community and help people,” King explains. “We’ve assisted units locally and across the country. So far, we have donated 65 trauma kits, 163 overdose kits, and 130 care packages to officers in need.” The goal of K9s of Valor is to provide every K9 unit with the life saving equipment that they need. Whether that means a trauma kit, a narcan overdose kit, assistance with surgery costs, or heat alarms that protect K9 officers, the volunteers of K9s of Valor are ready to help. “We believe every department should have the supplies necessary to save lives,” says King. “Heat alarms are particularly important to our K9 Officers. If a dog is in the car and it gets too hot, a heat alarm will alert the officer, activate the sirens, and kick on an emergency fan. Those systems also have an emergency button so if an officer is in trouble, they can hit a button and release the doors so the dog can jump into action. They’re pricey units, but they save lives. We’d love to provide these to every department. We’re increasing fundraising to accomplish this goal.” Recently, K9s of Valor hosted a fundraising event at local Chipotles to assist the Medina County K9 Unit. You will also spot them at the upcoming Medina County Pet-Tacular! on May 6. You may also want to keep your eyes peeled, because you’ll likely see this fantastic organization at upcoming events later this summer. “We’ve helped out Medina County, the University of Akron, Wadsworth, Kent State Police, Streetsboro…. We’ve come a long way, done quite a bit in Stark and Summit Counties in addition to Medina, and we’ve helped canines across the country. The vision was originally to help provide trauma kits, but when there’s a need, there is a way.
