e've all heard the saying "April showers bring May flowers." What most people don't know, however, is that this phrase is actually referring to bridal showers and wedding bouquets. Okay, so maybe I made that up. But summer is indubitably a popular season for weddings. With sunshine and an abundance of natural flora and fauna, it is understandable that Ohio couples are choosing this season to tie the knot. Whether they are looking for a local venue with breathtaking views of the Medina countryside or a fairytale destination wedding in a land far away, the wedding experts in this issue know how to make your big day perfect. From the proposal to the honeymoon, planning a wedding is a lot of work. But, right now, you can sit back and relax as our experts point you in the right direction for venues, gifts, and catering. In the mean time, feel free to day dream about your wedding or vow renewal. I think you'll learn that here in the magical Midwest, you are surrounded by a community of support that will help make those dreams a reality. As always, keep in touch.

anchee and Raskol Jewelry Designs started as a hobby to help others.

Ann Jackson, owner of the established design company, states, “

I started making jewelry and accessory designs as I could not find any quality silent auction items for the many charities that I volunteer for. As a result, I have been donating beautiful designs—bracelets, necklaces, purses, rings and jewelry boxes to charities in need. I am so pleased that Banchee and Raskol Designs are helping raise funds for organizations that are desperately seeking donations in this economy.” Jackson continues, “Banchee and Raskol Designs were named after my first two stray kitty cats that have now become a part of my family." Jackson also rescues stray kitties and has proudly placed many a kitty! She also owns a “few” kitties as well. Each design piece has a signature cat and angel charm. The cat charm signifies the celebration of life and the angel charm signifies love, courage, dignity and grace. Jackson is designing these handmade pieces of in honor of special people in her life that are now gone. Her mom was a very special person and always took in stray cats, dogs, gerbils, mice, bunnies, turtles, and so on. She loved animals, and no matter how sick she was, she was always there to help both animals and individuals in need. "I am so very proud to have formed this little company in her honor. I am following my mom’s tradition of taking in strays and helping others. My design pieces represent handcrafted celebrations of life. Each jewelry piece comes with a card with a picture of the kitties as well as a special blessing.” Banchee and Raskol Jewelry Designs are made with crystal, freshwater pearls, metals and a host of other gemstones and materials. Jackson has been involved in the fashion industry for over twenty years—and has had the prestigious position as Regional Director for Fashion Group International (FGI). As the volunteer director of FGI, she worked with national and international fashion and jewelry designers. Jackson taught fashion classes for over ten years at Virginia Marti College of Art and Design. At Virginia Marti, she served as Department Chair of Merchandising as well as oversaw the Jewelry Design, Interior Design, Fashion Design, Graphic Design and Merchandising Internship programs under the direction of international fashion legend Virginia Marti Veith. Jackson was an adjunct professor at School of Fashion Design at Ursuline College under the direction of nationally acclaimed fashion author and Fashion Department Chairman Dr. Constance Korosec. Jackson says, “I have used my fashion expertise and contacts to secure unique suppliers.” Jackson has been a public relations consultant here in the Ohio region for over twenty years. ARCHITECTURAL JUSTICE ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES

"I

’ve always loved designing and building with natural materials," says James Justice, Owner and Founder of Architectural Justice. "I find inspiration from nature, architecture, traveling, antiquities. Inspiration can

come from so many places and combining all of these experiences drives many of our designs." Architectural Justice has been serving the greater Cleveland area with design and remodeling ser-

vices for over 30 years. Justice first began his design career building cabinetry and working on home additions. As the work grew into larger projects, Justice began to pursue the granite business, which is now the mainstay of Architectural Justice. The Architectural Justice showroom, located in Medina, just two miles south of Route 303 on Pearl Road, is housed in a barn with a history that traces back to the early 1900's. Originally known as Longview Farms, the barn is now a chic, one-of-a-kind showroom featuring about 20,000 feet with various vignettes and material selections for interiors. "Our showroom is really something I’m proud of," says Justice. "Within the space we are able to showcase a large variety of remodeling products 10

including cabinetry, flooring, tile, architectural metals, cast stone products, custom millwork, hardware, appliances, plus furniture and home decor. Outside of the showroom we have one of the largest selections of granite, marble, and natural stone in our area. In addition to all the product we have to offer, we have on-site artisan workshops which include granite and stone fab-

rication, custom cabinetry, furniture and millwork, architectural metal design and fabrication, cast stone fabrication, as well as design and remodeling services." Architectural Justice is one of the largest stocking stone fabricators in NE Ohio, with over 3,000 slabs of natural stone on-site plus over 100 selections of quartz in the showroom. The beauty of these natural stone options, Justice explains, cannot be beat. "Each slab has a one of a kind pattern and is available in a countless array of colors, patterns and textures. Granite is one of the hardest dimensional stone types and is scratch resistant and heat resistant up to 480 degrees. It is easy to maintain with mild household cleaners and can be easily sealed by the consumer. Along with granite we also stock marble, onyx, travertine, soapstone, and quartz." Along with the showroom and on-site granite yard and workshops, Architectural Justice also has another valuable resource: designers and artisans. With a team of experts dedicated to design and functionality, each project is unique. Lately, though, Justice has noted a trend toward homeowners pursuing options

In bathrooms, attaining a spa-like feel is a trend that remains and will be here to stay." For first-time renovators, Justice recommends conducting planning, research and budgeting prior to committing to your

Dream Destinations ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES

Y

ou have dreamed of this day since you have been a little girl. Up until now, it has been only a fairy tale. It should be romantic, exciting, relaxing, and an unforgettable experience, which is why it is always best to work with a travel expert to help your dreams become reality.

Cynthia Hansen, owner and Executive Travel Director at Red Travel in Medina, is in the business of helping honeymooners maximize

their experience. She and her team of agents have toured hundreds of resorts throughout the Caribbean and Mexico. They also have first hand experiences in Hawaii, Europe, Alaska, French Polynesia and more. “We are different than most travel agencies. We don't just book travel, it's about what we stand for,” she explains. “We stand proudly behind our brand and core values which include a love of travel, a passionate client focus, and our desire to create a 'WOW' vacation memory for all of our clients.” When a soon-to-be wedded couple comes into their office, the Red team wants the planning to be as exciting as the actual honeymoon itself. While sipping a latte or glass of champagne, they become familiar with the clients idea of a dream honeymoon. Getting to know their personalities, likes and dislikes, and budget will help to match them up to the right destination/resort to maximize their experience. “We get to know each of our couples to understand what will work best for their honeymoon, because destinations and resorts will offer a variety of options that may or may not be best for the client. For example, some couples may prefer lively over quiet. Or they may prefer the shade to the sun. It may sound silly, but the smallest inconvenience can impact the overall WOW factor of their honeymoon. For that reason, we may tell clients that we don’t feel comfortable booking destinations or resorts that we are not familiar with or don’t meet our standards,” says Hansen. When it comes to choosing a destination, Cynthia sees a great deal of interest in the Caribbean and Mexico, where the majority of all-inclusive resorts reside. All-inclusive resorts offer the best value and some have incredible honeymoon packages. CONTINUED >

DREAM DESTINATIONS (CON TI N U ED)

Europe, French Polynesia, Hawaii and even South America are fairly popular as well for those couples that are looking for something different. The team at Red Travel have first-hand experiences in most of these destinations. “It takes a lot of time to truly create that wow-factor,” says Hansen. “All-inclusive resorts are by far the best value, and different components come with different packages. So, before you even begin considering a honeymoon, you should consider your price point. When it comes to an experience, you get what you pay for. Booking online or through a resort may seem like a good option, but it presents opportunity for components that make your honeymoon memorable to be left out, forgotten, or unacknowledged. We don't charge for our services, and we are trained directly by the travel suppliers. With our connections and familiarity with our suppliers and resorts sometimes we can even secure the little extras for our clients they wouldn’t have normally received.” “We want the experience to begin at the planning stage, not during the trip,” she continues. “Our honeymoon couples get the VIP treatment when they visit our office. We have champagne, we watch videos, and we get them excited about their upcoming getaway. We want to put all the components of the trip together from the time they leave until they return home. Honeymooning is a very special occasion, and we want to make sure that everything is exactly as they imagined.” And most importantly, if anything happens that could affect their clients’ experience negatively, a Red agent is always available to help. Having a Red agent on your side will help alleviate concerns. They are someone that cares. And, since they work as a team, if your agent is not available for emergency situations, another Red agent steps in to assist. “I love being in the travel industry,” says Office Manager and Travel Agent Wendy Krizsa. “We bring our clients excitement and something to look forward to in the upcoming months. And, most importantly, we play an integral role in creating memories that last a lifetime. One of my favorite destinations is Cabo San Lucas. The scenery is breathtaking, the weather is beautiful, there is an active nightlife as well, and the destination screams romance. Is this destination right for everyone? No, that is why we take great care in getting to know our clients to determine if each destination would be right for them.” What can be more romantic than an exclusive over the water bungalow? Complete with glass bottom floors, outside showers, direct access to the ocean and butler service, bungalows can make any princess bride feel like a queen. Up until about a year ago, these exclusive bungalows could only be found in destinations like Bora Bora, Tahiti, or Fiji. Now they are even available in the Caribbean. And the Red agents have been there to give you their first hand experiences and determine if an over-the-water bungalow is right for you. “I think cruises are great for younger couples that want to be more on the go and don’t necessarily want beach every day. And if you are on a tight budget, you can even drive to some of the ports of call which even include Baltimore, which can bring your overall costs down,” adds Krizsa. “I personally like the smaller ships or even the sail yachts for a really romantic honeymoon," says Hansen, “They're more affordable than one would think and you get to visit islands where the big ships cannot go.” If you are a more mature honeymooner, a River Cruise may be more desirable than a big ship or even an all-inclusive resort. Who wouldn’t want 16

P

opping the big question can be a nerve-wracking experience, and Timber Lodge Owner Ron Levitt has seen

many a proposal first-hand in his historic Medina restaurant. “They want it to be perfect,” he says. “And we've seen it all. We've put a ring in the champagne and in the cake frosting. Many proposals have taken place here over the years, and I think there is a reason for that.” Next to a menu featuring a wide selection of USDA choice, Prime and Angus steaks , fresh seafood, chicken, and pasta dishes, Timber Lodge has one other particularly alluring trait: it is filled with a charming sense of cozy familiarity thanks to its long history as a site of congregation.

Love Food You'll

ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES

The iconic Timber Lodge building is located on the “bend” of Pearl Road between Brunswick and Medina. In 1844, Samuel Clark constructed the first structure on the property—a simple farmhouse. Sometime in the decades following its construction, it passed through several other notable families (including the Kenyon, Richard, and Schaber families) and was rebuilt and used as an early area schoolhouse. By the 1930's, the house fell into the possession of the Kellers, who added to the farmhouse and opened it as a restaurant in 1933. “I purchased the restaurant in 2002, and the building underwent tremendous restoration,” he said, gesturing to the wood. “This is Wormy Chestnut wood. In the Depression Era, chestnut trees were infected with worms that carved holes in them. People were employed to cut down trees from coast to coast in an effort to spark the economy. As a result, a lot of old buildings have this beautiful, irreplaceable, warm wood. Here, it adds to the warm lodge environment.” To further attest to the history of the building, Levitt has various memento photographs on display amongst the cozy chalet scenery. One such photo depicts a happy couple posing beside a cake with the number 50 proudly on display at its peak. “Here is a great story—this couple was married here 50 years ago,” he explains, his eyes sparkling. “We booked out a private anniversary party for them, and family from coast to coast gathered here to celebrate with them. Many other guests have come in and informed me that they came in and had dinner after their high school prom, and now they're in walkers. The restaurant has a long history of celebrating love.”

The Loving Couple is a dish you'll particularly love--it features both a Filet Mignon and a half pound lobster tail!

Of course, Timber Lodge continues the tradition of setting the scene for romantic memories through on and off site catering, both in full tableside and buffet style service. “We're famous for our desserts,” says Levitt. “The carrot cake is irresistible.” Notable dishes feature Snapper, Walleye, Halibut, 1 lb Giant Lobster, Mahi Mahi, and other fish flown in from all over the world. Healthy, pan-seared, fresh, and never frozen, the variety of fresh seafood, handcut aged steak, and outstanding portions will blow your mind. The best part is that this is just a snapshot of the wide

variety of regular menu items and chef features that are offered every day at Timber Lodge. “We also have excellent selection of wine,” boasts Manager Lynsey Curren. “There is so much to choose from in the wine industry, but we strive to find a unique and delicious bottle at a great price. When you come to Timber Lodge, you have the opportunity to try wines that you won't see on the endcap at the grocery store. It started with Boneshaker, a red wine made by Hahn Family Wines. After that, I fell in love with discovering the next big thing. Our latest hot seller is Intrinsic Cabernet Sauvignon, in which the grape skins remain with the fruit for nine months versus the usual one month that is standard for red wines.” The restaurant's full-service Jacalope Lounge features offers Happy Hour from 4 pm to 7 pm, Monday through Friday. This includes over 30 wines hand-selected by Curren and over 40 varieties of bottled beer. “ Timber Lodge is all about fresh steaks and seafood, big portions at a great value,” says Levitt. “We are a restaurant that is very rooted in the community, and we love being a part of it. "We have our Prep Staff in at 7 am daily to prepare our Homemade Recipes of sauces and dressings, etc, cut our steaks, portion cut our fresh seafood loins, to be ready to open at 4 pm. That alone separates us from the chain restaurants. You will not find a Chef in those places." Whether you are looking for large-portions of quality food for a price (and flavor) you cannot resist or are looking for the perfect scene and staff to make your romantic moment extra special, Timber Lodge is the romantic milieu for you. Timber Lodge is at 2809 Pearl Road, Medina. For hours and menu options, call 330.725.6288 or visit TimberLodgeMedina.com.

Creating Cakes T

here is a particular charm that hovers over old-fashioned bakeries. Ann's Pastry Shop, located in Downtown Wadsworth, is no exception. Many of their recipes have remained unaltered across the decades, yet they still main-

tain the flexibility to produce an ultra-modern wedding cake. “We think the bakery is 60 years old,” says Gwen Peters, who co-owns the bakery with husband David. She explains that she and her husband purchased Ann's Pastry Shop circa 2009, and are the fourth owners of the small-town shop. “I haven't archived it, but some news articles have said that we were founded in '59, and people I've spoken with have said that our community presence spans generations.” The second owner of the bakery had previously closed a small bakery “that had been there forever,” and brought with him certain recipes. Items such as the crème sticks have a recipe that dates back over 70 years, spanning generations with their flavor. “What is particularly special about our long-spanning history is that we have the pleasure of serving generation after generation,” explains Peters. “Future parents came in and got their wedding cakes, and now their daughters are coming in. And then we get to welcome another generation with baby bump or gender reveal cakes.” When it comes to wedding cakes, Peters, whose wedding cake career spans over 30 years, says that she has noted a trend toward simple cake design. “It used to be heavy, Victorian-type cakes. Now they're simplistic and cleaner looking. Of course, you still get the occasional younger bride that wants that heavily decorated flowery cake.” Interestingly, icing and fondant are equally in-demand amongst brides. Fondant has come a far way, she explains, with better flavors and textures than ever. Since many people still love that traditional icing, a lot of brides prefer icing with fondant additions.

22

Medina County Lifestyle | May 2017

“When picking your wedding cake design, all that matters is that the bride loves it,” she says. “We have done some unusual and downright bizarre designs. We made a gamer cake, which relied heavily on Styrofoam with game pieces and electrical lighting. We have seen some 70's style cakes, like those with fountains and bridges, and we've done traditional cakes topped with cowboy boots with side cakes shaped like hay bales. We always do cake tastings with our brides and design the cake around her.” While many brides tend to lean toward a traditional white cake, Peters says that many brides choose to adorn their cakes with the shop's famous buttercream icing, which is off-white. Some brides are even choosing to forego cakes in favor of cupcake or doughnut tiers, which is both cost and time effective for brides on a budget. “You see a lot of cupcake weddings now because they're less expensive, you don't have to have plates, and you don't have to have someone tied up serving the cake. Another trend is serving cake and also doughnuts. Some brides will have a tier cake and doughnuts in their bridal colors.” While nowadays there seems to be an “anything goes” theme in wedding cake design, it is still important for couples to consider what will work best in their wedding environment. While foregoing traditional white, chocolate, or marble cakes in favor of carrot, banana, red velvet, or cassata may not seem like such an extreme idea, one must consider what the cake will be dressed with. “Whipped cream is a delicious topping, but you'll need a cooler day for that,” warns Peters. “And, if you choose to transport your own cake, big, elaborate tiered designs do not fare very well over gravel and potholes. We deliver to Wooster and Cleveland, and everything in between, so we have learned through experience that some areas are safer transportation routes than others. We delivered to a camp in the middle of the woods once. It was crazy. We ended up decorating on-site, just to ensure that nothing happened to the cake during transportation. That is always an option, too. It is important to consider these points to ensure that your wedding day is perfect and hiccup-free.” Overwhelmingly, Ann's Pastry Shop receives one complaint from brides: the cakes are too good, and guests are snatching up seconds before the bride and groom even get a chance to dig in! “It's a lot of fun,” admits Peters. “The wedding business makes someone's day special, and that's what it's about. While trends and location are worth considering, what is truly important is that the bride loves her cake. My best piece of advice is to choose something that you love.” Ann's Pastries is a full service bakery located at 121 High Street, Wadsworth. Named as one of The 10 Best Bakeries in Ohio by Bestthingsoh.com, their selection will make your mouth water. They are open Monday through Friday from 6 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturdays from 6 am to 2 pm. For more information, call 330.335.7441 or visit annspastryshop.com.

You'll leave with a unique, finished painting, and you'll have a great time making it.” Kelly first discovered Painting With a Twist after she attended a painting class in the basement of a shopping center. Though a crafty person, she had never considered herself to be much of an artist. To her amazement, she had a fantastic time in the class, but she was taken aback by the location and the cost of drinks. “That's when I found out what Painting With a Twist had to offer,” she explains. The company was founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, though it was not even originally intended to be a company. In the wake of the natural disaster, a group of friends met in a barn. Armed with wine and painting supplies, they were determined to have a good time while distracting themselves from the damage that resulted from the storm. The painting party was a hit, and the project soon grew into Painting With a Twist. Now there are over 300 studios nationwide, all of which allow guests the opportunity to bring their own snacks and drinks and are dedicated to providing a fun and positive experience. “I have a small team of 7 artists,” says Kelly. “But, as a whole, our company employs the largest amount of artists in the country, next to public school systems.” Intruiged, I had to experience a class first-hand. As a lifelong Claude Monet fan, I enrolled in a class that offered me the opportunity to learn to paint Monet's Red Bridge. Upon arrival, I found myself surrounded by roughly 15 other women. With the encouragment of a cooky Art Instructor who introduced herself as Terry Potter, we all mingled, familiarized ourselves with our brushes and palette, and then took to creating masterful works of art. Energetic, boisterous, and endlessly entertaining, the magical Miss Potter managed to have the group laughing throughout nearly the entire period of instruction. She was elevated upon a small, central stage, and a camera projected a closeup of her canvas onto a television on either side of the room so that the entire group had a clear view of her technique. As she walked us through the painting process step-by-step, each individual painting looked equal parts beautiful and unique. No two paintings were alike, and some attendees even found in themselves a previously undiscovered knack for art. “If you get stressed, it's okay to wine a little,” she chirped, which produced a chuckle from the attendees. “Just be sure to keep your paintbrushes out of your wine cups!”
