Lifestyle Letter
Home sweet home J
ust a handful of months ago, I found myself in a new living space. I remember sitting by the fireplace, surrounded by boxes and plain white walls. I could not help but drink in the blandness of my surroundings with excitement, because I knew that within the following weeks the space would undergo a metamorphosis. Soon, the space would have its own personality. Soon, it would truly be home. I realized, then, that home is not a place, but a feeling. A home is created when you take a living space and breathe life into it, adding a dash of personality, security, and comfort. All it takes to make a space homey is tender, loving care. This month, the Lifestyle team met with experts in home and garden care to help you rejuvenate your living space, as well as to help you make your dream home a reality. With summer cookouts just around the corner, it is a great time to begin sprucing up your home and yard to wow your future guests. In this issue, we will look at color and design trends, what you may have missed in your spring cleaning, and the importance of using your surroundings to grow relationships. If those April showers have you down, don't fret! This issue is full of bright colors and wisdom that will bring a little bit of fun to your rainy day.

We’ve even planted trees, each a different species of North American hardwood, which we commonly make furniture out of.

2017 Fashion Show I
n 2014, The Women’s Auxiliary of The Salvation Army of Medina hosted their first fashion show
and brought in over $3,500 to support their various community-based programs. These programs include Learning Zone (an after school tutoring program for elementary aged children), Kids Club (children work on life skills such as cooking), Bible Study, Women’s Ministries, M.U.N.C.H. (a hot meal program open to anyone in the community) and so much more. This year, the theme will be "Derby Divas." The fashion show will take place May 5 at 7 pm, and the show will be held at A.I. Root Candle Company, 623 West Liberty Street, Medina. "We are first a church then a social services organization," says Lieutenant Cristina Spencer. "Our mission is to spread the gospel in different ways. The money we raise from the show goes directly to our programs to support the Medina-area community. The best thing about our mission is that we are able to make a positive impact while having a lot of fun." The show will feature some of the latest Dress Barn fashions on prominent local women, including Common Pleas Judge Joyce Kimbler and Commissioner Pat Geissman. Mistress of Ceremonies will be Robin Swoboda, and Swizzle Stick will provide music at the show. Tickets are $25, or $20 for seniors aged 65 and up. Please call 330.722.6488 to purchase.

A call to Perfect Power Wash should be on every home owner’s “Spring Cleaning To Do List.” Mike and his staff are happy to answer any questions. Here is a brief guide to some of their services:
Home owners should give the outside of their home a complete spring cleaning too, says Mike.

as winter turns to spring), leaving unsightly black and green streaks. As a follow up, Mike and his staff add a second application to ensure that these unwanted house guests are completely eliminated. Each application contains a special additive to inhibit future algae growth and keep your roof looking newer, longer. • Driveways and Concrete – Despite its great strength, concrete is a very porous material. When debris and water get trapped in the tiny pores below its surface they can cause considerable damage. Perfect Power Wash protects the concrete in driveways, patios and other areas around the home with a three-step process that begins with the application of a cleaning solution. This is followed by pressure washing and finally by the application of a siloxane sealer. Because it is highly flexible and aligns itself near the top of most porous surfaces, like concrete, siloxane is an ideal shield, protecting against dirt, water and other contaminants while also allowing the concrete to breathe. • Home Siding –Winter is rough on home siding; its winds and storms often bringing contaminants that can become trapped within crevices. Perfect Power Wash’s Safe Pressure House Washing System works to remove debris from all types of siding, from vinyl and aluminum, to brick, wood and stucco. The process includes a double application of biodegradable cleansers to remove contaminants from siding and inhibit future buildup. This is followed by a selective soft bristle brush scrub and Perfect Power Wash’s signature double fresh water rinse Giving your home’s exterior a spring cleaning with Perfect Power Wash will not only enhance its appearance, it will also protect your family by removing potential health hazards posed by contaminants – and it will save you money too. For example, cleaning your roof should reduce cooling costs in the summer by removing algae, which being dark, absorbs more heat. And, according to the National Association of Realtors, power washing a house before putting it on the market can increase its value by up to $15,000. Turning to the pros at Perfect Power Wash will help you realize the benefits of home exterior cleaning quickly and easily. Using their professional service saves money over less effective do-it-yourself options that call for using rented equipment. It will also let you finish your cleaning faster, which is a good thing, because this will give you more time to get out an enjoy the party nature throws every year around here during our beautiful Northeast Ohio spring.

THE PLANNING STAGE: KNOW WHAT APPEALS TO YOU.
Burianek explains that his team works hand-inhand with home owners and his interior designer to bring to life a quality home with features that the whole family will love. “We pride ourselves on being a hands-on builder. Details are put into the design to make it functional. From the beginning, I get to know what functionality works best for our clients. CONTINUED >

LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE (CON TI N U ED)
We encourage clients to consider the layout and design in advance so that we can plan ahead by pinpointing what works best for their needs.” To anyone planning their dream home, he recommends doing your homework and touring model homes to discover features that they would like to bring to life in their own home. GET TO KNOW THE BUILDER.
“We were awarded Best of Houzz in 2016 and 2017,” says Selections Coordinator Lynn Pugnea. “We offer a wide variety of floor plans, or we can work with yours, and we also offer a professional designer to assist with making your vision a reality.” “When you are meeting with a builder, inquire as to how energy efficient a home will be,” recommends Burianek. “How does the house score when doing a blower door test? What are my energy savings per year? A lot of people do not know to ask that, and not all builders will build energy efficient homes.” Standard homes, he warns, lose a lot of energy through leaks in doors, windows, vents, and even ceilings. Burianek and his team test each home to ensure leaks are sealed, saving homeowners energy and earning their homes certified "5 Star" or "5 Star Plus" ratings. It is also important to consider and discuss warranties and upgrades as well, and buyers should discuss a given base-price with builders to ensure that it includes quality workmanship as well as these important features. LEARN ABOUT TRENDS.
Architecture is in a constant state of evolution, as evidenced by the wide variety of houses represented in some of the older areas of Medina County. While some homeowners prefer a more traditional layout, many modern homes are seeing a shift to more open room concepts with plenty of storage space. “The open concept on a floor plan is probably the big thing people want,” says Burianek. “Formal dining rooms are becoming a thing of the past... even bathtubs are starting to become an option people don't want! More space translates into more storage space, and homeowners are starting to favor more closet space in the bedrooms.” The Medina County Parade of Homes, presented by the Medina County Home Builders Association, offers the opportunity for you to see the best in local residential construction, including 2 home by Modern Home Concepts. Mark your calenders for Saturdays and Sundays May 6 through 21, and set out to learn and ask questions. GET READY TO LOVE WHERE YOU LIVE!
“We are happy to build on any lot,” says Pugnea. “It's all about the homeowners, making them happy, and bringing a dream to life.” To begin brainstorming with the Modern Home Concepts team, contact Mike at mikeb@modernhomeconcepts.net or visit modernhomeconcepts.net.

est. Obviously, if you live in a big city you don't always have that opportunity. Anything that you can create that gives you that feeling of really being immersed in nature is a good thing. An example would be a living wall inside your home, office or patio. Wallpaper has undergone the biggest reinvention of the 21st century. The new patterns are metallics, large geometrics, black and white, industrial and urban patterns. We also are seeing a growing trend in feature walls, which create the feeling of cocooning a room around you. It is the ultimate trick to transport a room into a fantastical statement without any major spends. Butterflies are a symbol of both grace and optimism. They are no longer designated to childrens' rooms, but rather celebrated

Detroit Michigan has taken on a new artistic scene which grows with a design renaissance. Urban classic colors, architectural photography and a mixture of metals is another nod to seeing the perfection in imperfection.

T
he team at Peters Professional Landscaping have noticed an interesting shift in recent outdoor living trends.
“I have noticed a trend in people preferring to entertain their guests
in their backyards rather than going out,” says General Manager Josh Riley. “People want something to keep bringing guests over.” In Ohio, the dramatic seasonal weather fluctuation was once dreaded. Now, there seems to be more appreciation and celebration of seasonal change as well as nature in general. “With the state of technology today, people want a place at home to decompress and enjoy the outdoors,” says owner Chris Peters. “There is a trend toward building an outdoor space where people can gather. People look forward to coming home, relaxing, and enjoying wine by the fire. We've done quite a few fire pits and outdoor kitchens over the past few years. Fire pits are especially popular when it comes to entertaining, because they can be used throughout several seasons.” Though equipped with a large fleet of equipment that allows them to provide year-round services (including snow removal, customer designed landscapes, brick patios, and water features, among many other services), April is an especially exciting time for the Peters Professional Landscaping team. “Around April, we're in full landscape mode,” says Peters. “As far as maintenance—lawn, tree, and shrub—it's go time. Between April 24

and June, everyone wants to be ready for that outdoor Fourth of July entertainment. Nothing makes an impact like a well-designed yard and healthy, colorful flowers. ” While the team is ready to maintain your yard and to fill flowerpots with annuals that reflect the season, they also are experts on maintaining and nurturing relationships. “People want to make an impact,” says Riley. “And I always say if you can dream it, we can build it. We actually draw out landscapes so that you can have a better idea of exactly what your dream space will look like, and to make sure we're both on the both same page. We want you to feel comfortable with your design and confident that you'll love it.” As an extra perk, there is an opportunity to get to know your team before you even request a quote. By visiting PetersLandscapingOhio. com, you can click through the team to get to know them and their work. Plus, Peters Professional Landscaping has a beautiful showroom located just south of Medina where you can stop in and meet the team in-person. “Growing a relationship with the customer is the most important part,” says Riley. “Before the project, we want to get to know you. Your likes and dislike as far as plant material, texture, and color, and what your budget is. Even what your entertaining habits are like. When we are working on a project, the communication is so important. But after we complete the job, we want to keep that communication going. Throughout the whole process and beyond, we are only a phone call away and always ready to help.” From professional lighting that brings your landscape to life at night to Smoke-N-Hott Grills to Unilock features, Peters Professional Landscaping will help you find that perfect fit for your lifestyle needs. “The opportunity to host summer get togethers is right around the corner,” reminds Peters, “and landscaping is all about making that great first impression.” Peters Professional Landscaping is located just south of Medina at 7080 Wooster Pike, and they service commercial and residential landscapes across Northeast Ohio. n Northeast Ohio, we are a long way from the ocean. Fortunately, though, there is an exciting new location
on Montrose Restaurant Hill that pairs the taste of the coast with old-fashioned Midwestern warmth. Upon arriving at Kingfish Seafood, the first taste of your nautical experience is actually a feast for the eyes. The exterior of the restaurant is remniscent of a coastal New England home, as blue and rich as the water from which your meal was recently caught. A swordfish statue majestically greets visitors from its perch above the building. Inside, the seaside splendor continues. From the Harbor Room, where intimate parties and corporate events are hosted beneath a chandelier that seems to be bubbling up from the deep, you are instantly transported to an artistically aquatic paradise. Kingfish is the newest of eight fine dining destinations run by locally owned Hospitality Restaurants. The kitchen is under the expert direction of Executive Chef Marc Standen, who’s supervised the group’s award winning Blue Point Grille in downtown Cleveland for the last ten years. He’s made the trek down I-77 to lend his seafood expertise bringing authentic flavor to regional American dishes. Chef Standen, who grew up spending summers on the coast, proves there is a true art to coastal cuisine. Guests have the opportunity to enjoy a daily selection of Chilled Blue Point and Boutique Oysters, Seared Big Eye Tuna, Maine Lobster Noodle Casserole, and a spicy Creole Shrimp Stew. The New Bedford Scallops have quickly become a signature dish, with the scallops pan-seared alongside brussels sprouts, bacon and hazelnut sweet potatoes. Fusing classically American dishes with a hint of contemporary expression makes it easy to accommodate everyone's tastes. The menu includes much more than seafood, offering a full array of hand cut Certified Angus Beef Steaks, Maple Glazed Duroc Pork Chop, and house-smoked Lamb Belly which is one of the restaurant's hottest dishes. There is even a separate dinner menu to accommodate vegan and vegetarian diets. “There is something here for everyone – from start to finish,” says Chef Standen. “From a hand-crafted cocktail at the bar all the way to delicious homemade desserts, Kingfish Seafood makes the perfect backdrop to a fantastic evening out.” Kingfish Seafood is located at 115 Montrose West Avenue in Copley. Open for dinner seven days a week, hours are Monday through Thursday, 4 to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday, 4 to 11 pm, and Sunday, 1 to 8 pm. Call 330.777.2005 or visit KingfishAkron.com for more information and to make reservations. April 2017 | Medina County Lifestyle
