Welcome 2017!
H
appy New Year! 2017 is going to be a year full of great things—opportunities, memories, and, hopefully, a healthier me. I have made a resolution this year to avoid buying junk food and to take advantage of my gym membership everyday. Though I try to keep healthy on a regular basis, now is a great time to drop the "try" and start keeping healthy. Turns out, my resolution is similar to most Americans'. Each year, losing weight and staying fit and healthy rank as the top resolutions that Americans set out to accomplish.
It is no surprise, then, that these resolutions are also the most commonly broken. If you have made a goal to invent a new you with the New Year, no worries. We met up with Tinman Fitness to learn about how to stick to your goals, and Dr. Randall from Cloverleaf Animal Hospital offered advice on fun ways to keep active with your dog. After all, is there truly a better reward than seeing your best friend's tail wagging at the idea of staying fit with you?

Start the Year Right With
SHEN Yun ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES
Kick off your new year right by experiencing 5,000 years of cultural celebration in one must-see performance. The 2017 Shen Yun performance, which takes place just a few days after Chinese New Year on February 4 and 5, brings together close to 100 talented performers to pay homage to over 50 Chinese ethnic groups that hail from different backgrounds, lifestyles, and geographic regions. “Some people say it is a two and a half hour trip around China,” says Tianlun Jian, Shen Yun Executive Director for Cleveland. “You will see different lifestyles, from the historical past through today.” The performance consists of over 20 different acts. Throughout each act, viewers will be rewarded with a visual tour of China. Shen Yun utilizes a backdrop that changes more than a hundred times, featuring art that highlights unique hometown sceneries. “It is moving, so you can see a lot of different things during the performance,” explains Jian. “Both the background and dancers are moving, so the movement develops the story as it changes. The weather changes, too. In some cases, it is just like a film, but with live people and a live orchestra.” From the Mongolian Grasslands to the vibrant grounds of the Yellow River, each distinctly different lifestyle is honored through over 400 individually-crafted costumes worn by top Chinese dance performers. Jian laments that the current political state of China has attempted to destroy these individual cultures over the past six decades. Each year, different shows are performed to highlight different dynasties and different stories. Each new tour consists of unique costumes, music, and choreography. This year, five tours performed by five troupes are simultaneously touring the world—except for China, where the performers could be prosecuted for their preservation of culture and its roots in Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Shen Yun 2017 will consist of more than 400 performances in more than 110 cities. This year, 14

the performances will include reenactments of famous stories, including The Monkey King and its mind-blowing visuals. “You know what the universal reaction to this performance is?” asks Jian. “Japanese, American, Russian... they always say one word: 'Wow.' Some people have said it touches their soul. Everyone walks out with a smile, and some have even said that the world is a better place because of Shen Yun. The mission is to try to revive culture, and through cultural revival it enriches our
community. It is uplifting, and a oncein-a-lifetime experience.” Each individual piece of the performance is unique, and each story is different. There is something for everyone within Shen Yun, and the overall experience will endow you with hope and inspiration. Can you imagine a better way to start the year? Shen Yun 2017 offers shows February 4
at 2 and 7 pm and February 5 at 2 pm at the State Theatre, Cleveland. Tickets are available at PlayHouseSquare.org or ShenYun.com/Cleveland.

However, if you ever find yourself needing rehabilitation after a hospital stay or are seeking a residential facility for a family member with dementia, it is important to understand the value of a home environment that puts you and your healthcare as highest priority. When it comes to healthcare, it is important to dispel any misconceptions or myths regarding care to ensure that you find the best environment for your situation. To help answer questions about Life

environment is not conducive to their new lifestyle. Many of them return to Life Care Center of Medina as a resident after learning that their care and services puts patients first and allows them a functional lifestyle that combines care with activities, outings, and parties. 2. FAMILY IS IMPORTANT—AND LIFE CARE CENTER OF MEDINA EMPHASIZES THAT. “We encourage family participation with all patients,” says Clinical Liason Taylor Jones. “Especially if they are going home knowing they may need assistance from their families, we make sure to provide a lot of education and make families as active in the patient’s care as possible while their loved ones are here.” · Many times, when an individual is receiving specialized therapy, it is difficult for their families to understand exactly how much and what type of therapy that entails. To ensure clarity and communication, Life Care staff will set up a meeting to answer questions, establish discharge goals, and determine what family goals exist at the time of admission into the facility. The patient-centered approach allows a lot of autonomy to families and reassures them that their loved one will return to their prior level of functioning in the community. Life Care Center of Medina also offers a home evaluation, where they assess the patients' home (such as if they have stairs), to ensure that they are prepared and able to return back there at the appropriate time. “It is a lot less anxiety going home, too,” says Jones. “They feel better knowing that we are aware of their home situation and their specialized needs. And, along the way, we give families the opportunity to be involved and to be prepared to assist with the patients' routine.” CONTINUED >

the services provided by a traditional nursing home. Not only does it provide short-term rehabilitation and long-term care, but it has a variety of activities and social opportunities to make the environment feel homey and enjoyable. “For many people, their visit is centered around skilled rehabilitation with the sole goal of getting them back home faster, healthier and safer after their hospital stay," says Regional Director of Business Development Kelly Belcher. "During their time with us, multiple disciplines including therapy, nursing, social work and dieticians are all working with the resident and family towards the ultimate goal of returning them to their home. “Many times, patients return home and realize that they may need additional care or that their home January 2017 | Medina County Lifestyle

3. DON'T WORRY—THE FOOD IS GREAT. “Some people assume a facility such as ours will smell, or that the food is bad, but those aren't true,” explains Admissions Director Samantha Kern. “Our per-day cost of food is between 25 to 50 percent above the industry average because of the variety and quality we serve. We offer a lot of alternatives, so you will have freedom in choosing your meals. Those of us that work here often eat food from the kitchen, actually. It's really good.” She goes on to explain that poor food quality is one of many misconceptions associated with a stereotypical nursing home. Some other things that occasionally surprise visitors are the courtyards, gardens, aviary, cozy couches and chairs, rich wooden furniture, sun rooms, and the abundant social environment. 4. CARE IS PROVIDED TO PEOPLE OF ALL AGES. People of all ages have been served at Life Care Center of Medina. “We have taken men in their 20's that have had traumatic brain injuries and need specialized therapy, and they've walked out our front door,” says Kern. “We treat adults recovering from surgeries, and we provide out-patient care to those that need regular therapy. If you are getting skilled rehab, the goal is to get you home.” Residential care is also available, including a secured dementia unit with a Memory Care Coordinator who is very educated with decades of dementia-specific experience. 5. STOP BY AND TAKE A TOUR. “I think from a patients' perspective, going through the cycle of a healthcare experience can be scary,” For more information, visit
admits Jones. “It is reassuring to know that you have a lot of freedom in making choices with our facility, and

PupPositive Resolutions ARTICLE NIKKI RHOADES
I
f your dog could talk, he would probably say, “Let’s get more exercise and eat better in 2017! And let’s do it together, because I love you.” That's right! Just like you would set a New Years Resolution to get healthy, you can also set a resolution to get healthy with your pup. Healthy eating and regular exercise are important parts of taking care of your body. Arguably, when you take care of yourself and your four legged best friend while having fun, your accomplishments will feel all the more rewarding. “Just like you and me, a fit dog is a happy dog, and is more likely to live a longer life,” says Dr. Linda Randall, the owner and veterinarian at Cloverleaf Animal Hospital. “I find that the easiest thing for me to do is to think what I like to do to keep active, and then include my dog in that activity. This can work the other way around, too. What does my dog love to do? And then I come up with a way to include myself in that activity.” While there are yoga-with-your-dog classes and agility and obedience courses that will keep both you and Fido having fun and moving, activity can be as easy as taking a hike. Randall explains that she loves to take advantage of the Medina County Park District's vast collection of local scenery. She loves to challenge herself by setting personal hiking mileage goals and has even made it a goal to visit all of the county parks this year. 20
Medina County Lifestyle | January 2017
Come summertime (or, perhaps some of those rare warm days in spring), swimming may be an activity that your dog will enjoy. Tossing retrieving dummies into the water makes it feel like more of a game than a workout, even though it will help you and your pet get in shape. However, fetch alone is actually not as good a workout as one might assume. “A dog that is not fit is also more prone to injuries with the twisting and turning involved in chasing and catching balls and Frisbees,” says Randall. “Instead, I recommend that you teach your dog tricks and use the ball as a reward for doing the trick. Mental fitness is a component of physical fitness.” How much activity is needed is dependent upon your dog's condition, weight, breed, age, and any existing physical concerns. It is always wise to visit your vet to go over exercise plans, nutrition, and to make sure your dog is medically sound. Still, it is a good idea to start learning about your pet's nutrition needs. For treats, Randall suggests starting with simple foods that have only one to three ingredients and no additives. Sweet potato and chicken or beef and rice are healthy and tasty treat for your pup. The dog should be able to consume the treat easily and quickly, so a soft treat is usually the best. Name brands are usually more expensive because they are made of better ingredients, and as a result, are better for your pet's overall health. It is possible to research treats that can be made with your pet's favorite foods. It is important to avoid providing your pet with access to foods like grapes, fresh onions, fresh garlic, chives, chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts, rising bread, and coffee, as these may cause mild to severe problems for your dog. In truth, keeping active with your pet is easy because you both love each other's company. Just make sure neither of you does too much too fast. Just do a little more each day, or do it at a faster pace. With the current developments in the research regarding benefits of nutrition and excersize, there are even FitBit devices for your dog that can hook up to an app on your CONTINUED > computer and smart phone. PUP-POSITIVE (CON TI N U ED)
“Anything we can monitor in people we can now monitor in our pets,” explains Randall. “A Voyce collar is the perfect addition to your pet’s healthy lifestyle. A Voyce collar will help you keep your dog in condition by monitoring cardiac and respiratory rate. It can also help you determine if your dog is in pain so that you know when you should stop, especially with a dog with orthopedic or aging issues. We all know sleep is an important aspect of improved physical and mental health, and a Voyce collar will also monitor your dog’s sleep habits.”
There are many ways to help you and your furry best friend in shape throughout the year. Your resolution can be as small or big as you would like, as long as it is realistic. “One person was determined to teach her pigeons to land on church pews and then take off together for a dramatic finale for her wedding in the coming year,” says Randall. “An outstanding animal trainer I know just did the same thing with 10,000 butterflies.” Though you may and your pup may be doing something as small as taking a class
on how to encourage leash manners in a positive way (I recommend classes at The Agility Underground!), setting goals and working together is the most important thing. The New Year is the perfect time to start getting active, and it is important to keep your loved ones active with you. After all, love is a four-legged word! To schedule your dog for a wellness visit or classes at Cloverleaf Animal Hospital, contact Dr. Randall at 330.948.2002.

SET GOALS. As simple as it seems, goals are an important way to keep you committed to a healthier lifestyle. One should set three different types of goals: realistic, short-term, and long term. “When you are setting out to carry out a fitness resolution, you should set realistic goals,” explains Heather. “A lot of people approach working out with unobtainable goals and become frustrated when they do not immediately see results.” You should set short-term

FIND SOMETHING YOU LIKE. What do we look forward to more than chores? Well, a lot, actually. In fact, most of us hate chores. Naturally, accomplishing a resolution is very difficult when working out feels like a chore. “You need to get motivated for whatever you do, whether it is crossfit, running, walking, or zumba classes,” says Jason. “A good trick to keep motivated is to get involved with run clubs or gyms. They give you the opportunity to bond with those you work out with, and they'll hold you accountable if you miss. You are more likely to stick to it if you have somebody else counting on you, and you are less likely to fall out of rhythm if you have someone rooting with you.”

his year, make it your resolution to begin exploring insurance options immediately. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), forgoing insurance is punishable by tax penalty. Enrollment is only open through January 31, and the experts at Health Markets Insurance Agency in Medina warn against waiting. “The best advice I can offer is to not try and select a plan or complete enrollment on your own,” says Licensed Insurance Broker Patrick Althof. “You owe it to yourself to have a licensed professional guide you through the process. Our guidance at Health Markets is free, and we are not tied with any single carrier. Instead we educate to help you make the best decisions.” As 2017 begins and we move closer to Inauguration Day, there seems to be much uncertainty about what will happen with healthcare. However, through 2017, no requirements set out by the ACA will be changed. If you already have a plan through the ACA, now is the time to change or add on supplemental plans like critical illness or accident policies. “After January 31, you need a qualifying life event to obtain new coverage,” says Patrick. “Without an event like a marriage, divorce, or move, you cannot get new coverage. However, if somebody misses the deadline, we still offer ways to get coverage past the deadline.” To find the best plan for you, an insurance professional will ask questions about doctor visits, medications, preferred providers, family history, and preexisting conditions. The best way to predict the future, explains Patrick, is to look at what has happened in the past. It is important to be informed about your options, because simply investing in insurance based on price increases the likelihood of gaps in coverage. You may also have made a fitness or health resolution this year, and obtaining new coverage may actually help you accomplish your goals. “A lot of health insurance policies will allow membership for fitness classes, visits to a chiropractor, and of course, yearly wellness visits for things like mammograms, colonoscopies, and pap smears. “Almost daily, I hear about the excessive costs of medications. At Health Markets, we want to help you prepare for both the expected and unexpected by keeping you informed about your options. Now is the time to take advantage of open enrollment. But don't wait—everyone else is coming in last minute, and you want to make sure we have time to get to you.” Health Markets, located at 3705 Medina Road, will be accepting walk-ins Mondays through Saturdays. To schedule an appointment, call Patrick at 216.407.9824. Visit HealthMarkets.com/palthof for more info.

Parting Thoughts
This Year, Go Vegan! S
ince August, Sean Hennessy has served as the Greater Ohio Outreach Coordinator for Vegan Outreach. The non-profit animal advocacy organization educates on the importance of food choices to personal health. They emphasize the benefits of a plant-based diet, whether it is flexitarian (minimal meat consumption), vegetarian (no meat consumption), or vegan (free of meat, dairy, and eggs). As a vegan of six years, he would like to highlight why you should incorporate a plant-based diet into your resolution. 1. PLANT-BASED DIETS CAN BE A POWERFUL TOOL TO IMPROVE YOUR NUTRITIONAL OUTCOMES.
A healthy plant-based diet consists of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes over meat, dairy, and eggs. Cutting meat and dairy products are linked with a lower rate of obesity, a lower risk of death from heart disease, a lower rate of cancer, and a lower rate of type 2 diabetes. “A lot of people don't realize you can get more than enough protein from plantbased foods like beans, nuts, and vegan meat-substitutes,” says Hennessy. “Most adult vegans need about 1.1 grams of protein per kilogram of healthy body weight per day, so for me, that’s 80 grams of protein per day and I get it easily from plants. Similarly, there's a lot of calcium in products like almond milk, soy milk, and kale.” He suggests that people looking to cut back from meat incorporate one simple change at a time, like going vegetarian one day per week for Meatless Monday or substituting products in your meals like almond milk instead of cow's milk. 2. IT IS BENEFICIAL TO OUR ENVIRONMENT.
“A study in 2006 found that switching from a standard American diet to a vegan diet reduces a person’s greenhouse gas emissions more than switching from a Toyota Camry (at 30 MPG) to a Toyota Prius (at 57 MPG), so our food choices can have a profound impact on climate change and might matter more than other steps we take to go green,” he says. Plants have lower greenhouse gas emissions and also require less water and land consumption. This means, as the global population expands, reducing our consumption of animal products can actually help provide opportunities to grow even more produce to meet the growing demand for food.

3. YOU CAN MAKE A STAND FOR A MORE HUMANE WORLD.
By choosing a plant-based diet, you are voting to save animals. The less meat our society buys, the less we slaughter animals like pigs, cows, and chickens. Processing plants slaughter animals like chickens and dairy cows as their productivity falls, which ends their life well before the natural lifespan. “A dairy cow is killed by about age 5, though she could live over 20 years,” Hennessy explains. “And a mother cow forms close relationships with her baby calves, so the mother will bellow in sadness at the time of their separation.” Pigs, he adds, are social and intelligent creatures that can even be trained to play simple video games. “I still haven't heard a good answer to the question, 'Why love a dog but eat a pig?'” 4. THE FOOD IS ACTUALLY PRETTY GOOD.
“For breakfast, I usually make a strawberry banana smoothie with almond milk, kale, and flax seed. For lunch, I like to do tacos with Beyond Beef crumbles, Tofutti sour cream, guacamole, refried beans, and lettuce. And for dinner, I make a mean stir fry adapted from my mom's recipe with udon noodles, bell peppers, mushrooms, green onions, and cashews. A lot of foods people already eat are vegan, like a peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or celery with hummus.” Though people may be reluctant to try meat alternatives, Hennessy recommends Gardein's beef-less burger and Beyond Meat's chicken strips. They are close to the taste and texture of actual meat without the cruelty. 5. IT IS EASY TO GET STARTED.
The accessibility of the world through the internet makes switching to a plant-based diet easy. Websites like HappyCow. net can help you find local places to eat, and VeganOutreach. org offers a free Guide to Cruelty-Free Eating. Surprisingly to many people, a plant-based diet may actually help your wallet. Eating mostly unprocessed foods can save you money, and in the long-run cutting out meat that is pumped with antibiotics and full of cholesterol can decrease potential health issues. Why wait? When you are working toward a healthier you this year, consider getting involved with Vegan Outreach or making a donation to help them spread awareness of the benefits of a healthy diet.
