e all have people in our life who are blindingly optimistic, and we all have people that see their glass as half-empty. I learned while assembling this issue of Medina County Lifestyle that it does not matter how you see your glass because, either way, there is room for more wine. Admittedly, before I began working on the Hops & Vines issue, I did not know exactly what a hop was (fortunately, Matt from Lager Heads offers a bit of insight in For The Love of Lager). I had a grape time learning the specifics of wine and beer production in Medina County, and I think you will love this hop-portunity to get an inside look at some of Medina County's finest wineries and breweries. Just in time for Oktoberfest! And, of course, I could not resist including a creepy and cooky story to help get you in the Halloween spirit. We are inspired by our community, and I believe this month's issue is a snapshot of some of the diversity that exists here. Medina County Spirits Author Michelle Belanger discusses growing up psychic ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY NIKKI RHOADES

ichelle Belanger has always known that she wanted to be an author. Having been born with a ventricular septal defect, she had several heart surgeries before the age of five. Lacking the ability to be physically active during much of her youth, she found herself taking refuge in books. “The first spirit that I am aware of seeing was actually encountered at the Hinckley Library,” she recalls, explaining that she grew up nearby and would walk there on pleasant summer days. “I did not realize for years that she was actually a ghost. When I went to the Highland Local School District, everybody believed in ghosts. Most people had experiences to recount.” The Medina resident is well-known in the paranormal community for both her work as a researcher and psychic on A&E's Paranormal State and her wide range of published work. Though her work as a psychic comes second to her writing career, growing up sensitive in a community with a long history and a ghost here and there would inevitably influence and become intertwined with her writing. Belanger, who graduated from Highland High School in 1991 as one of two National Merit Scholars, was raised mainly by her grandmother in Hinckley. Belanger grew up aware that she was a psychic, and she flourished under her grandmother who encouraged her to keep an open mind, but to never assume that she was always right. Aside from loving guidance, Belanger received another important gift during her upbringing. “My family is Irish extraction, and as such they are natural story tellers. I grew up hearing stories of family history and the history of the places which my family came from.”

Belanger's childhood was filled with a love of history and stories, and she discovered in herself an appetite for knowledge that would follow her into adulthood. “Both the Highland High School library and the Hinckley Library are amazing. Through those I had access to all kinds of books. Paranormal, parapsychology, mythology, folklore, and history. I devoured whatever I could get my hands on. From the time I knew words, I knew I wanted to be an author. I still believe knowledge is power, and educated is better-armed than being ignorant. In my career, I have been able to help spread knowledge as well as stretch the academic side of me, particularly with my studies of the Book of Enoch and the Dead Sea Scrolls.” Equipped with a degree from John Carroll University in English and Religious Studies, Belanger today can boast of nearly 30 published books. Though she is most well-known for the folklore and mythological aspect of her work, she has also published poetry, analyses of energy and psychic work, and most recently, urban fantasy. “Urban fantasy is a lot like film noir with a little flash and dazzle of magic. Last year I released Conspiracy of Angels, the first book in the urban fantasy Shadowside Series, and we celebrated its launch at the Medina Library. It is set out here in Northeast Ohio. It's seeped in a lot of the history of Cleveland, where it takes place. A major part of the setting is the city that it is in, and the city almost seems to become a character. I could not think of a better place than Northeast Ohio, which is such an underrated area.” And, she adds, it is an area seeped in seemingly paranormal activity. Medina County in particular is rich with unusual local lore and whispers of hauntings. It certainly has a

long history—early records show land in the county being purchased as early as 1795, eight years before Ohio even became a state. “Hinckley was a pretty haunted area to grow up in,” says Belanger. “I have a friend who thinks the hauntings could be tied with the Great Hinckley Hunt.” The Great Hinckley Hunt brought an estimated 600 men and boys together in 1818 to “exterminate” game that had been devastating settlements and farm land. Allegedly, veterans from the Revolutionary War and War of 1812 were among the hunters, who hailed from as far north as Cleveland and as far south as Bath. The hunt took place in the winter, and when spring came, buzzards flocked to the area to pick at the remains. Legend has it that they continue to return to Hinckley because of the lasting impact of the hunt. She explains that a lot of “weird” local legends seem to connect paranormal energy with the land, and some of those stories are Native American and predate Ohio's founding. Belanger has even heard suggestions that ley lines, or spiritual alignments of geomorphic features, contribute to the reports of local hauntings. "It is worth digging into the history of your hometown," says Medina-based author Michelle Belanger. "Sometimes, fact is stranger than fiction.”

“Regardless of if the area has a history of paranormal energy, there is a lot of local lore that I really enjoy. Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Valley City has the infamous Witch's Ball, which does not actually have a woman buried under it. It is a family plot marker, but the whispers of a witch being buried in the cemetery probably has ties to a real-life story of a poisoner. Many of her victims are, in actuality, buried in that cemetery. Many buildings in Medina Square allegedly have their hauntings, which is perhaps related to the fires that devastated the area in the 1800s or a cholera epidemic. A lot of local houses seem to have their own hauntings, too. It is worth digging into the history of your hometown. Sometimes, fact is stranger than fiction.” While Belanger's latest works in the Shadowside Series are fiction, she has been able to infuse pieces of her own background into the story. From local lore that she has absorbed to her experiences as a paranormal investigator, she insists that some stories make better fiction than reality. “In the international world of publishing, many people are completely unfamiliar with this area. People unfamiliar with Ohio assume it's all just cows and corn, but there is so much beyond that. There exists such a diversity in places like Medina County, and in my works of fiction I am able to infuse experiences to explode misconceptions about what the Midwest is. I find that even people living here have much to discover.”

Homebrewing: an untapped market

“I

f you can whip up a batch of kool aid, you can make wine,” says Steve Girard with a chuckle. He explains that most people do not realize that they can make wine or beer at home with relative ease. “I find that some people think it is illegal, and others think it will cost a fortune to get started. But, the reality is that it is completely legal to make wine or brew beer, and it can be done with things everybody has around the house. You know, you can brew amazing beer using just a plastic bucket, a boiling pot, and a refrigerator.”

We just find that brewing in this area is a fairly untapped market.” When the couple moved to Brunswick from Minnesota, they were surprised to find that there was not a single wine making and brewing supply shop in the imme-

I took a class, bought my first wine making kit, went home, and made really good wine. diate area. Since they brought with them a love of wine making and beer brewing, the Girards set out to change that and to spread education about their craft. In 2015, they opened the Vine N Hop Shop. The store became Brunswick's first supply shop and winery. They soon turned the shop into a haven for homebrewers through the establishment of the Brewing Ring in Medina (BRIM) homebrewing club. In September, BRIM celebrated their one year anniversary in conjunction with the grand opening of the Vine N Hop Shop's taps. Though the Girards are now the proud owners of a winery and brewery, they have no qualms about sharing their recipes and helping up-and-coming brewers. “Our mission here at the Vine N Hop Shop as well as in BRIM is to educate and encourage,” explains Steve. “There is no such thing as a dumb question, and nobody here is going to put you down for not knowing the different types of malt. Our goal is to help you improve your knowledge and your skill, and we will be here to answer questions along the way.” Though the pair are experts and amazing instructors, they only learned about the world of opportunities in brewing and wine making in the last 12 years.

They feature high-end brewing equipment as well as small-scale kits for beginners. The air of the shop is fragranced by malts, 55 different types of grain and 40 different types of hops that range from pine to watermelon f lavored. “Beer brewing and wine making are arts, and any artist must practice their craft,” says Kristin. “We try very hard to start you off with the right recipe and help you get the process right. We have things to appeal to beginners or master brewers. We even have root beer and cider making kits.” The best way to discover if brewing is right for you is to stop in and get to know the Girards. att and Jon Keine are well-known figures in the Medina County community. In 2010, the brothers started brewing at Lager Heads BBQ Smokehouse in Abbeyville, and they secured a following that forced them to move to a new location in 2015. “We outgrew our restaurant brewery and decided to open a brewing operation close to the heart of Medina,” says Matt Keine. While Jon can be found making sure the restaurant runs smoothly on a typical work day, Matt tends to oversee operations at the Lager Heads Brewery just outside of Downtown Medina. The Keine brothers share a love of craft beer, and that is what initially sparked their start in the business of brewing. After they began to feature craft beer at Lager Heads BBQ Smokehouse, its popularity inspired them to begin studying homebrewing and, ultimately, to begin producing craft beers for their restaurant. “I think the entire country is craft-centric,” says Keine. “People love traditionally-made local brews. It is a great time to be in the market, especially in this area. There are so many great brewers from Cleveland to Akron that it is hard to not support local companies.” Craft beers are the brews produced by small, traditional, and independent breweries. They tend to produce fewer than 6,000 barrels of beer each year, which gives them the opportunity to perfect each individual brew. According to 2015 statistics from the Brewers Association, craft brewers make up 12 percent of the total U.S. beer market.

So, what is it that makes craft beers so great? Matt Keine in particular appreciates the variety, as well as the opportunity to introduce people to new drinks. Lager Heads Brewery produces about 17 ales and lagers year round, which requires upwards of ten different varieties of hops. Hops are the flower cones produced by humulus lupulus vines that, when added to beer, contribute bitter, zesty, or citric flavor. The humulus lupulus plant is, interestingly, in the same family as hemp. “We actually are getting ready to offer Harvest Brown Ale, which we brew out of hops that we grow at our restaurant,” says Keine. “This is the fourth year that those have been producing. We planted some hops behind the brewery last year, though those will not produce cones for a while still.” Keine says that beer styles tend to flow with the seasons. With the brewery in Oktoberfest mode, they tend to put out heavier, maltier beers. As we move closer to winter, they will offer darker, heavier beers with more spice. As the seasons change into spring, they will begin offering lighter beers such as witte, which is flavored with orange peel and coriander. Keine recommends that people that are not super experienced in tasting craft beers start with a light lager and work their way up to the more hop-heavy styles that are available on tap. Usually, around nine beers are available in the tap room, and brewers are available on-location to answer any questions you may have. CONTINUED >

ilbert Winery is the county's oldest winery, and it stands out thanks to its intimate venue and friendly atmosphere. Tucked away in the Valley City countryside, the winery barn is scenic, historic, and private. “This is what I love about this place,” says owner David Jilbert. “It is a personable environment and a family-operated business. Our barn is located in the quiet countryside. It is refurbished, as it is over a century old, but you can still see the original structure.” Jilbert Winery is well-known for their honey-based wines, which help make nights out at the barn even sweeter. They produce 12 different kinds of wines, including Traminette, La Crescent, Chambourcin, Pink Catawba, Niagara, and Landot Noir. “I prefer dry wines. My personal favorite wine that we produce is the Chambourcin. It is a nice, dark gold-red dry wine. I always recommend that. If you prefer sweet wines, I recommend our mead. It is our best-selling wine, and it is made with locally-produced honey.” Jilbert Winery is truly a home-grown gem. Established in 1999, they started out producing wine and now are also rooted in the agricultural aspect of wine making thanks to a

seven-acre vineyard in Lafayette Township. They have also now produce beer, which they brew by the keg. “We always have three different kinds of beer on tap. We produce several different beers a keg at a time, so we alternate between what we have available. We might have, for example, an amber ale, a rye session, and a light witte on tap, but once those kegs run out, new beers will be available.” Jilbert works hard to ensure that your experience at his winery is relaxed, friendly, and fun. If you are inexperienced with wine-tasting or have any questions about the process of wine making, he is eager to help. “Not everybody knows where to start when it comes to wine-tasting. Of course, we work to make your experience as smooth as possible. We will set up things up in an order of recommended samples and are happy to help you through the process. We work hard to help you find your favorite drink, whether it is a dry or sweet wine. We cater to a diverse palate and will help you find a wine you'll love.” The winery is open most weekends for wine-tastings, although they are closed to the public during private events. As a result, wine makers must mix in a lot of sugar to balance out the flavor. In November of 2014, Miss Molly's opened a high-end boutique that caters to classy ladies of all ages. "The toughest thing in retail is picking out products that other people would like.I would say my wife is very talented in selecting what ladies would appreciate, and I even participate in that as well. We have always had pretty good taste, but we were really fortunate to be able to feature such a unique array of products." d Wright, one of the founding members of Main Street Medina, could not have imagined how the nonprofit organization would grow. Though he knew a group dedicated to preserving and enhancing the importance of the Medina Public Square Historic District would flourish, he did not expect that it would grow as quickly as it did. Main Street, Inc. is a nationwide program that aims to revitalize historic commercial districts through a combination of preservation and community-building activities and events. It is estimated that Main Street Medina alone hosts more than 100 events each year. Currently, Main Street Medina is in the process of hiring a new executive director to help them continue expanding and bringing the community together. The group is composed of a Board of Directors, promotions committee, fundraising committee, design committee, business development committee, organization committee, and membership committee. Each committee has a variety of responsibilities and events that they see to, which is why it is important to find a dedicated executive director to help take them above and beyond. “We have the goal of increasing the value and economic stability within our community, which means that we cannot just maintain the status quo. We must continue improving.” Wright hopes to see the Historic District continue to enlarge and grow as Main Street Medina incorporates more businesses 34

into their organization. He points out that the whole community grows as more people work together to improve it. “Main Street is a special program in that it has acted as a vehicle of communication for small businesses. It brings us together and keeps us sharing ideas. Most importantly, it keeps us working together as a community to further enhance what our community has to offer. I am excited to see how we will continue to expand under the leadership of a new executive director, and you should be, too, as we will soon be offering more opportunities to get involved in your community. And they will be better than ever before.” This month, Main Street Medina will offer events such as: • The Medina Beer and Wine Fest: This night of fun will take place at Weymouth Country Club October 8 from 6 to 11 pm. Live music will entertain you while you sample beers from Ohio microbreweries, and food will be served all evening. Tickets are available on the Main Street Medina website. • Ladies Night Out: Grab your girlfriends and hit the historic streets of the Square for an evening of pampering, socializing, and shopping October 13 from 5 to 8 pm. • Falloween: Don your costumes and bring the kids to the Square October 22 between 2 and 6:30 pm to celebrate the sweetest time of the fall season. Trick-or-treating will take place from 5 to 6:30 pm. Main Street Medina will offer many additional events throughout the rest of 2016.
