LIFESTYLE LETTER

Our Style Issue

September 2026 PUBLISHER

This month, I want to take a moment to celebrate and explore the fascinating world of style. Style is woven into every aspect of our lives. From how we decorate our homes to the music we listen to, the books we read, and the way we carry ourselves, style permeates every facet of our existence. It’s the thread that weaves together the tapestry of who we are—far more than just the clothes we wear or the accessories we choose. Part of what makes style so captivating is its deeply personal nature. It evolves alongside us as we explore new interests, embrace our quirks (like my go-to Rolling Stones concert tee!), and express what we value most. It’s a language without words, a powerful tool for connection that bridges differences and sparks shared understanding. Here in Delco, we are especially fortunate to have dynamic communities that make exploring personal style an absolute joy. Take a stroll down State Street in Media—"Everybody’s Hometown"—and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Media’s vibrant mix of independent boutiques, artisan shops, local jewelers, and cozy storefronts makes it a haven for discovering pieces that actually mean something to you. Supporting our local shop owners and creative entrepreneurs isn't just great for the community; it’s one of the best ways to find unique, hand-picked treasures that you won't see anywhere else. I encourage you to think of style as an authentic expression of yourself. Whether you’re browsing local shop windows in Media, blending classic vintage elements with new trends, or creating something entirely original, let this issue inspire you to embrace the power of self-expression. What I’ve learned is that the best style is simply who you really are—your passions, your story, your individuality. And that is something no one else on Earth can duplicate. Here’s to being unapologetically and uniquely you. BTW. If you ever wonder if I'm involved on shoots, here's my picture with little Dante, son of our models Daquon and Kirsten.

I FOUND THIS IN MY JEWELRY BOX The pieces you'll never sell —and why they deserve another chapter.

Every home has one. A jewelry box tucked inside a dresser drawer. Some are beautifully organized. Others are filled with tangled chains, single earrings, old watches, broken clasps, and tiny velvet boxes that haven't been opened in years. If I asked you to pull yours out today, what would you find?

Redesigned from family heirloom jewelry

• For many people, it isn't just jewelry. • It's the engagement ring your grandmother wore for fifty-two years. • Your father's wedding band. • The bracelet you received after your first child was born. • A watch given to you for graduation. A necklace from someone who is no longer here. As jewelers, people often assume we see diamonds, gold, and gemstones. What we actually see are stories. Some of the most meaningful conversations we have, begin with a simple sentence: "I found this in my jewelry box..." Sometimes it's a ring that no longer fits. Sometimes it's an heirloom that's beautiful but doesn't match someone's style. Sometimes it's a broken chain that has been waiting twenty years to be repaired. And sometimes it's old gold that people never realized still held value.

The exciting part is that almost every piece has possibilities. A broken clasp can be repaired. An outdated ring can become a necklace you'll wear every day. Several inherited rings can be combined into one meaningful design. Old gold can often be credited toward a new custom piece, giving forgotten jewelry a brand-new purpose. The memory doesn't disappear. It simply finds a new way to be worn.

THE SUNSHINE JEWELRY BOX AUDIT

This weekend, spend 15 minutes going through your jewelry box. As you sort through each piece, ask yourself: • Does this still fit? • Is anything broken that I've been meaning to repair? • Are there heirlooms I've never worn because they aren't my style? • Do I have single earrings or loose gemstones? • Is there old gold that could be traded toward something new? • What story does each piece tell? You may be surprised by what you discover. We've seen clients uncover forgotten heirlooms, valuable gold tucked away for years, and sentimental pieces they thought could never be worn again. Sometimes what looks like a forgotten collection is actually the beginning of your next favorite piece of jewelry. Here, the client's custom design gave new life to an existing engagement ring by transforming it into a modern peak ring.

MORE THAN

a Bag

A BLEND OF FASHION AND FUNCTION 16

T R E N D SE T T E R | STYL E + BE AU T Y

A purse does more than hold your phone, keys, and wallet. It quietly pulls an outfit together while also handling the practical side of everyday life. That balance between fashion and function is what makes a great purse feel less like an accessory and more like part of a personal style. Some bags are designed to stand out. A bold color, metallic detail, or structured shape can instantly become the statement piece of an outfit. Even with simple jeans and a white T-shirt, the right purse adds personality and intention. Other times, a purse works best when it blends in. Neutral tones, soft leather, or minimalist designs create a polished look without stealing attention from the rest of the outfit. These subtle bags are often the ones people reach for every day because they work with almost everything. CONTINUED >

17

Of course, style only goes so far if a purse is impractical. The best bags are the ones that fit real life. A roomy tote helps someone move from work meetings to errands without missing a beat. Even a small clutch has a purpose for evenings out when only the essentials matter. Fashion trends may change every season, but the role of a purse stays the same. It adapts while still serving a purpose. That’s why people often invest in bags they truly love. A good purse is dependable, but it also can make a fashion statement. In many ways, a purse is one of the few accessories that people use every single day. It carries necessities, reflects personal style, and can completely change the tone of an outfit. Whether bold and eye-catching or simple and understated, a purse proves that fashion and function can exist beautifully together.

FASHION TRENDS MAY CHANGE EVERY SEASON, BUT THE ROLE OF A PURSE STAYS THE SAME. 18

EXPERIENCE UPSCALE CUSTOM MEN’S CLOTHING AT HOME

ARTICLE BY KARIN DAVIDSON INTERVIEWING EILEEN KEVANY, INDEPENDENT MEN’S STYLIST, J.HILBURN PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF J HILBURN

EXP E RT H E LP | STYL E + BE AU T Y

WHAT ARE MEN WEARING TODAY?

So much depends on their lifestyle, both on and off the clock. I strive to create a closet where my clients can wear their clothing to more than one occasion and can mix and match. Suits still have their place in a man’s closet, but many are not wearing them as often. A general trend today is a smart sport coat with trousers or casual pants, paired with a collared shirt or T-shirt.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF USING A CUSTOM MEN’S STYLIST?

Custom-made clothing eliminates wardrobe decisions for busy men who have difficulty finding well-fitting clothing. I come to my client’s home or office, so it’s very convenient for them. You choose the colors and styles you like most, and everything fits perfectly! CONTINUED >

S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .C O M / M E D I A

21

HOW LONG DOES CUSTOM-MADE CLOTHING LAST?

It depends on how much he wears each piece and the care of the garment. In general, custom-made pieces last longer due to the quality of the fabric and the production process. With custom, there is no mass production; each piece is made individually. I recently had a client share that he has had some collared shirts for over eight years, and they still look great!

WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE IN GETTING WELL-FITTING CLOTHING?

Men often do not recognize the importance their clothing plays in how they represent themselves and/or their company. Recognizing his fit challenge is my first goal, and from there we move on to what clothing is needed for the life he leads, on the clock, socially, and on the weekend.

WHAT ABOUT OFF-THE-RACK (O-T-R) CLOTHING?

Off-The-Rack clothing is made for a fictionalized vision of a man’s ideal fit. Everyone has some fit challenges!

22

EXP E RT H E LP | STYL E + BE AU T Y

DOES O-T-R EVER WORK?

If you want to look your very best, no. Every man struggles with a fit issue of some kind.

HOW MUCH GUIDANCE DO YOU OFFER?

After a conversation about their work, social life, etc., I guide clients in making good clothing decisions and share how to use one piece in multiple ways.

DO MEN USUALLY THINK THIS WAY?

Men typically do not think of their clothing as suitable for different circumstances. They don’t think to “break up” a suit by wearing the jacket as a blazer with other trousers or casual pants, or to wear the trousers with several different kinds of shirts and a quarter-zip or shirt jacket. Many do not know how to put an outfit together, but once they learn some basics, they find it changes how they dress daily.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?

For in-person appointments, we have a questionnaire and a pre-appointment call to determine his starting point and budget. Our in-person appointments include a closet assessment, measurements, fabric selection, and personalization selection. The order is processed, sent to me for unwrapping, and then delivered to the client for assessment and fit confirmation. We also cover post-delivery concerns, if any. For virtual appointments, we use a virtual pre-appointment questionnaire, virtual measuring, a phone call, and a Zoom call to create his outfit(s) for selection and personalization. Then pieces are sent to him, and we have a Zoom call for a fit assessment. Delivery of most pieces is 4-6 weeks.

WHAT KIND OF MAN BENEFITS AND APPRECIATES CUSTOM?

• Busy men who do not have time to shop or hate to do it • Those who want convenience and a personalized shopping experience (no more mall shopping) • Men who want or need help coordinating outfits that work for their life • Those who have challenges with O-T-R options • Men who hate shopping online • Men who are color blind

IS CUSTOM MORE EXPENSIVE?

Yes, but one needs to remember that this is an investment in yourself. Custom-made clothing lasts longer than O-T-R clothing due to its higher quality. It also reduces the amount of fast fashion and clothing going to landfills.

WHAT ELEMENTS OF CREATING CUSTOM CLOTHING AFFECT PRICING AND OVERALL LOOK?

Pricing is dependent on the type of fabric, as well as the thread count. Availability is also a cost factor; for example, cashmere comes from limited sources, so it is more expensive.

JUST SUITS?

No! J.Hilburn creates more than suits. We have 11 categories of clothing from suits and shirts, business casual, outerwear, and custom golf wear. We also partner with luxury accessory vendors for shoes, belts, ties, and pocket squares. Post-COVID, business casual has increased significantly.

ARE MATERIALS DEPENDENT ON THE TIME OF YEAR?

J.Hilburn releases new fabrics in various categories around every six weeks. This helps clients plan accordingly for each season, business or pleasure trips, etc. Released fabrics reflect the season, and we are always looking forward to the next. Since we are a national company, we strive to offer fabrics and styling for all seasons.

WHAT KINDS OF CHOICES DO YOU OFFER?

Seasonal fabrics and all-year options are always available. If a client has skin sensitivities or dislikes the feel of certain fabrics, those can be eliminated as options, as can certain fabrics that may not be to his liking, i.e., linen for its wrinkle factor. As I get to know my client, I make intentional suggestions for him that are budget-minded and fit his life. For example: How much sitting you do during a typical week might lead me to suggest one fabric over another. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .C O M / M E D I A

23

IS THERE ANY PROJECT YOU COULD NOT FULFILL?

This has not happened frequently for me, I am glad to say. Usually, only when the client’s lead time was insufficient. For example, a client wanted a color-blocked shirt a few years ago, and at the time we did not carry that style. Come 2026, that style is now in our catalog of offerings.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE EVERY MAN TO KNOW ABOUT CUSTOM CLOTHING?

Every man deserves custom clothing. It's an investment in yourself that pays off in many ways and costs less over time because: • the clothing lasts longer • less closet space is used • the confidence factor it brings

24

EXP E RT H E LP | STYL E + BE AU T Y

L-R Daquan and Dan

Families are the wonderful thread in our happiness. Media City Lifestyle presents 2 Dad and Sons and a Mom in fashion clothing around town in Media.

DAQUAN, DANTE, AND MOM KIRSTEN

Kirsten is a nurse at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. She and her family love Media- so much so that they’d love to move here. Kirsten decided to be a nurse to support patients in their most vulnerable times by providing them with care, compassion, and advocacy that allows them to feel confident in the medical care they receive from her. She finds fulfillment in her medical background that allows her to wholeheartedly support her patients on their journey to health and is excited to see where her nursing career takes her in life. Her husband, Daquan is a police officer for the city of Philadelphia. His mission in becoming a police officer was to serve the community that he was raised in- to provide the people of Philadelphia with a familiarity that they can trust. More recently, Daquan was promoted to the Police Athletic League (PAL) where he works alongside the youth of Philadelphia, providing them with after school programs, sports, trips, activities, and skills to support them in becoming better citizens. He would love if this mentorship would encourage the young boys and girls of Philadelphia to one day become police officers and help keep Philadelphia safe. Their son, Dante, just turned one on July 4th! They call Dante their little firecracker. Dante loves to crawl, shout out his baby babbles and coos, and is so inquisitive and excited to explore the new world around him. Every day, Dante is ready to see and learn CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E .C O M / M E D I A

more, but his day isn’t complete until his mom and dad read him his favorite bedtime stories. There’s no doubt that once he learns to walk, there’ll be no slowing this little guy down.

DANIEL, ARCHER, AND MOM AMBER

Family is everything to Daniel. When he isn’t painting or working on a remodeling project, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Amber, and their three children. Whether they’re walking around downtown Media, exploring local shops, or simply making memories together, family always comes first. Their oldest, Luna, is the sweetest big sister, Leo is an adventurous two-yearold who keeps everyone on their toes, and baby Archer is always smiling and fits right into the fun and chaos. Daniel founded his painting and contracting business because he is passionate about helping homeowners transform their spaces into places they truly love. He takes pride in quality craftsmanship, honest work, and treating every home as if it were his own. His wife, Amber, has worked alongside Dr. Jason at Discover Optimal Healthcare in Brookhaven for the past 11 years, where she enjoys helping patients improve their health and well-being. Together, Daniel and Amber believe in working hard, giving back to their community, and creating spaces where families can make lasting memories— both in their own home and in the homes of the clients they serve Father and Son at Glen Providence Park at the end of W. State St. Dan and Daquan walking in Media Fathers and Sons on Daddy’s Day Out

Families always come first!

Wear Colors That Truly

LOVE YOU A quick guide to finding flattering shades for life.

KNOW YOUR UNDERTONE Your undertone doesn’t change with the seasons. Check your wrist veins: blue means cool, green means warm, and unclear may be neutral. Cool tones love jewel colors; warm tones glow in earthy, rich shades.

CONSIDER CONTRAST Do you have high contrast between your hair, skin, and eyes (like dark hair and light skin)? High contrast looks great in bold, clear colors. Low contrast (like blonde hair and fair skin)? Softer, blended tones often suit you best.

THE WHITE VS. CREAM TEST Hold a white and ivory shirt near your face. If white flatters, you're likely cooltoned. If ivory glows against your skin, you're likely warm-toned. This quick test reveals your undertone with ease.

BUILD AROUND YOUR “WOW” COLORS Once you identify a few colors that make you look and feel amazing, use those as the base of your palette. These are your power colors—build your wardrobe and makeup around them!

PRO TIP You don’t have to follow rules perfectly. Your color palette is a guide, not a limit. Mix, match, and most importantly—wear what makes you feel beautiful.
