Happy Birthday America!
July is the stuff of dreams and the time of infinite fun.. Sunsets at the park, s’mores around the firepit, hanging by the pool, backyard grills and picnics, sunrises at the shore, and that first bite of freshly picked Jersey sweet corn or jersey tomato sandwich...oh summer, we love you.
Our summer fun starts close to home. Rose Tree Park Summer Festival is in full swing with over 20 free concerts in the month of July alone. From Jimmy & the Parrots to James Day & The Fish Fry, this music series covers almost every genre and in between. So bring a lawn chair/blanket and pack a picnic.
If you’re looking for something more interactive, check out John Paul Murray’s exploration of summer rafting, canoeing, and tubing in our area. Attack class 3 rapids or maybe a lazy tubing day on the Brandywine.
July also rings in summer vacation for the kids. Game on State offers a haven for kids (and adults) who want to experience “old school” arcade games. Aimee Rubin and family have created a time machine complete with games like pinball, pac-man, space invaders and my favorite, skeeball.
Nothing says summer more than dining with family and friends “al fresco”. Media and the surrounding area host countless venues to enjoy fresh air and food. Most people take advantage of Wednesday's dining under the stars, but our team has compiled a list of local outdoor favorites you can enjoy any day.
Summertime also has an ugly side...it’s called swimwear. For those of us who misplaced our beach bodies, Dr. Jason and his team at Discover Optimal Healthcare have some options. The primary objective of weight loss is better health, the added benefit is even more gratifying.
The tradition of setting off fireworks on the 4th of July began right here in Philadelphia in 1777, during the first organized celebration of Independence Day. That’s now going on 246 years! The entire team at Media City Lifestyle would like to thank all veterans, those still serving and all of their loved ones for your sacrifice.
Lastly, some of us were around for the 1976 Bicentennial celebration highlighting 200 years of American Independence. President Gerald Ford spoke at Independence Hall, tall ships sailed into New York Harbor, Democratic Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter kissed babies, and I wore bell-bottom jeans and was singing “Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. Am I nostalgic for July fourth? You can bet your Galileo!

Game on State: Fun and Caring
Old School Arcade plus hiring challenged employees make for happy staff and good business
ARTICLE BY CHRISTINA CHESER AND CHEYENNE FORBES PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAYNE TOOHEY
In the heart of downtown Media is a lively arcade and old-time candy shop inviting any and everyone who loves a good time to play games from both past and present and indulge in confections. Game on State strives towards building inclusivity in the community for all ages and levels of abilities.
The arcade includes nostalgic games such as Donkey Kong, Space Invaders, PAC-MAN, and more.. The arcade’s website describes Game On State as a “new place for kids and anyone who wants to feel like a kid again.”
Aimee Rubin, owner of Game on State, expressed that it is important for people to know that it’s more than just an arcade and candy shop. “This idea actually came out of me doing research personally for my own child,” Aimee states. Aimee’s eldest child navigates the world with a chronic illness -- Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD), a disease that increases the likelihood of breathing issues and infections and impacts the ears, sinuses, and lungs with no known cure.
Aimee also mentions her son has executive function disorders and as she researched, she learned of customizing supported employment through Community Integrated Services.
In searching for assistance for her son, Aimee realized that it was very difficult to receive the support that she needed. At one point, she asked Executive Director, Susan Schonfeld of Community Integrated Services, “What happens to the people who don’t have a ‘me’? Someone is fortunate to have the time, resources and wherewithal to find the answers in another place?”
Susan replied, “They fall off a cliff.”
Aimee recalled that she and Susan spoke more on the subject, specifically the 18 to 21 age group. For Rubin, it wasn’t acceptable. At the same time, Aimee’s husband, Eric, mentioned to her that there wasn’t anything for the kids to do in Media. Eric grew up playing arcade games on the Jersey Shore and thought that Media was missing an arcade. They were initially met with disapproval from naysayers, but Aimee was determined to give it at least one try. She wanted to set the example for her children that they should never let fear be the reason they don’t pursue their dreams.
Aimee is proud that each employee with a disability or special need has a support person to assist them on the job. For example, Pedro, has Cerebral Palsy and is

in a wheelchair. Pedro is paid by Game on State for all his Eagles shirt-making shifts while Katherine, his support person, is paid by Community Integrated Services to assist him.
Every Thursday, Game on State holds a workshop with neurodiverse employees, employees with special needs and others where they gather together for activities such as making t-shirts and candy boxes. The most important aspect of these collaborative activities is the non-tangible impact it has on everyone. They are creating opportunities for individuals to be successful, to demonstrate how important each member is for the team, and to foster a sense of community. Aimee happily states that “it is the best possible gift to give to the community and to myself.”
Coach Dick Vermeil made a special visit to surprise Pedro to thank him for being such a big fan. Aimee shared, “ It was such an honor to have Coach Vermeil stop by Game on State to meet Pedro as well as all of the other excited customers. It was an afternoon the GOS team, our customers and the community members of Media will never forget. Coach Vermeil was a superstar on the field and is a champion off the field as well .”

Jumbo Johnson
Media Youth Centera Media Legacy
ARTICLE BY KARI TUMMINIA AND KARIN DAVIDSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAYNE TOOHEY
AT MYC, BROTHERS CONTINUE THE LEGACY OF THEIR FATHER HELPING THE COMMUNITY.
The Lewis Jumbo Johnson Media Youth Center strives to provide a safe environment for youth to expand their minds, grow their bodies, and have fun. They offer a variety of recreational and educational programs for youth in addition to partnership opportunities with the community… and have for over 75 years.
For over 20 years, brothers Lewis, Lawrence (Larry) and Anthony had the privilege of watching their father and the center’s namesake, Lewis “Jumbo” Johnson, run the Media Youth Center, serve on the Media Recreations board, volunteer at Rose Tree Colts and the Media Little League, and start the Media Petticoat League (now Media Softball) and the Media Babe Ruth League.
Today, the brothers continue their father’s legacy, motivated to pass on the opportunities and valuable lessons that were given to them through their own experiences at the youth center.
Larry shared that “Being around him at a young age just made it secondhand nature to want to give back. Giving time to help people is one of the most precious things you can give. We all only have a certain amount of time on the earth. If you can give the time you have trying to make a positive impact on a child’s life, that is time well spent.”
And ever since being involved in the Media Youth Center themselves as children, they’ve done exactly that. Unequivocally committed to the center’s mission and its continued growth, they now offer year-round basketball programs, Spring football, after-school tutoring and a robotics program, and even programs for adults, cheekily named the “Old and Slow Basketball Leagues” for men and women.
LOCAL’S CHOICE | SPORTS + RECREATION

But for the brothers, helping children is their true motivation… and second nature.
Anthony Johnson is on the basketball staff, refs games, does the book and clock, helps with clinics and has also coached different teams for a total of about 25-30 years.
Lewis shared a touching story of his favorite moment in his years working at the center. “One of my favorite success stories [was when] a handicapped young man played in our program. He was so sweet and innocent and didn’t let his disability [keep] him [from the] joy [of] playing basketball. Watching his teammates and opponents help him during games was really heartwarming! [And] when he scored his first basket late in the season, THERE WASN’T A DRY EYE IN THE CENTER. That was a special moment.”
Larry talks about growing up with MYC, “The greatest memory I have of MYC would have to be from my childhood. On Sundays during our All-Star Tournaments my father, Mrs. Morris, Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Heffernan would cook dinners for the teams who had later games. Why? to have people from different areas of the region eat together (Ridley, Chester, Philly) but also because my father knew that for some of the kids this might be the only good meal they may have for the week. Looking back as an adult and seeing kids and adults eating together in the 80s from different races and socioeconomic makes me realize we need more of this today.”
Last year MYC received an amazing donation. Kevin, Dennis, and Brian Morris are alumni of MYC, and their mother, Betsy Morris Walters, were long-time members of the MYC board of directors. As part of the gift, the Media Youth Center changed its name to the Lewis “Jumbo” Johnson Media Youth Center. The gift will provide a new permanent financial aid program that will ensure underprivileged kids the ability to join and participate in center activities regardless of ability to pay.
To find out more about MYC and the incredible legacy the leaders and staff at this organization are creating, visit MediaYouthCenter.com
Today, Lewis, Larry and Tony Johnson continue their father’s legacy, motivated to pass on the opportunities and valuable lessons they received.

Beside Still Waters
Why walk through the woods when you can paddle?
Water through woods, the quintessential Pennsylvania tableau. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water is a celebration of it, but who needs a creek in their living room? Get thee to a canoe, and put yourself in the picture. Sometimes hiking the trails at Ridley Creek State Park is not enough. You don’t have to go far afield to find serenity on a stream.
The Brandywine sounds like it should be in the Shire, not Chester County. Bring your fellowship to Brandywine Outfitters in Mortonville and have an adventure.
Port Providence Paddle in Phoenixville will change your opinion of the Schuylkill. It is pretty. Honestly!
Great food at the inn to start or end the trip. You take the Schuylkill River Canal out and watch the snapping turtles sun themselves on the rocks before a quick portage to the river itself.
A bit farther afield, but worth the trip, is the Delaware Water Gap, a national
park that is nowhere near Delaware. In about the time it takes to get down the shore you can make it to Edge of the Woods Outfitters. You can take it easy and get a view of the Kittatinny Mountains after a gentle 6-mile trip, or live a bit more dangerously and brave class 1 or 2 rapids on a 10-mile trip for the more experienced.
If urban vistas are more to your liking than verdant views, check out Hidden River Outfitters and take in the city from a different point of view. If you time it right, you can feel the angry eyes of motorists on 76 watch you beat their pace. And if you have ever been one of those tired and irritated drivers, now you know a way onto the water and into peace.
If you want adrenaline, try out the dam release dates through October. You can try the calmer family-style gentle rapids or bring-your-dog-with-you day at Lehigh Grove State Park.

needs, injuries and problems in a more convenient manner resulting in patients receiving combined experience and the fastest results.
One of the most challenging issues for most Americans today is weight. According to the CDC, overweight and obesity may raise the risk of illness from high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, certain types of cancer, arthritis, and breathing problems. As weight increases, so does the prevalence of health risks.

LOSE WEIGHT AND ACHIEVE BETTER HEALTH WITH HELP FROM DISCOVER OPTIMAL
When Dr. Jason Weigner received his Doctorate from Life University over 20 years ago, he had a clear mission in mind - to create a life-changing practice for patients who want to…
• Increase the quality and length of their life
• Get out of pain
• Avoid drugs
• Avoid surgery
• And do it by focusing on the cause of the problem...not just the symptoms.
Dr. Weigner is a National Board
Certified Chiropractor, a Certified Clinical Electromyographer, a Certified Decompression Practitioner, and Certified with a specialized study in Physiological Therapeutics. Weigner has extensive post education in the rehabilitation of spinal and extremity injuries and specializes in Neuropathies, Fibromyalgia, and Weight Loss.
Over 20 years later, Dr. Jason’s mission has not changed. Weigner and his team of multi-specialized doctors and practitioners work together in their approach to resolve patients’ healthcare
Dr. Weigner shared, “I can’t count the number of times I’ve found that a patient’s quality of life was adversely affected by excess weight or in many cases the culprit of the health issue.” In addition to chiropractic, medical, and regenerative medicine, Discover Optimal Healthcare has a team approach to weight loss. Nurse practitioner, Laura Malekina, graduated with her master’s degree from George Washington University. She has worked in many healthcare settings from urgent care for MLH to internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania health system working with orthopedic conditions. Along with Dr. Jason, Laura spearheads the weight loss program.
The practice is using HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) for weight loss with positive results. But in 2021, the FDA approved an even more effective treatment using semaglutide. This once-weekly injection is designed for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with weight-related conditions (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol), for use in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. The injection works by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake.

Laura Malekina, CRNP
Malekina points out that losing 5% to 10% of body weight has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease in adult patients with obesity or overweight. “We’ve seen some very positive results with this new treatment making a noticeable impact on the quality of life of our patients. “ adds Malenkina.
Discover Optimal Healthcare has evolved over the years, incorporating the latest inregenerative medicine concepts. “Our practice is predicated on discovering the source of the problem. We don’t try to mask your pain or attempt to manage it for you. Instead, we harness and engage your body’s natural ability to renew itself whenever possible, providing improved function,” explained Dr. Jason.
Weigner points out that his practice operates more like a family practice offering a complete resource for care…chiropractic, medical, regenerative, weight loss and even more recently the addition of vein mapping.
Vein mapping (arterial and venous mapping), which is a noninvasive ultrasound test that takes pictures of your arteries and veins (blood vessels). This test creates a “map” of your blood vessels that can be used to help better guide some medical procedures or to check for certain health conditions including potential blood clots.
