My wife Karin and I are thrilled to be your new source of all things local, here in “Everybody’s Hometown”. Every month we’ll bring you interesting stories from right in our backyard. We’ll highlight families, businesses, local events, community, fitness, food, health, home, music, style, charitable organizations and a host of other topics and events taking place in our community. Karin and I have lived and worked in Media for over 20 years and consider this an idyllic community. We’ve been inspired by our Media friends, neighbors, and local businesses. Our goal at Media City Lifestyle is to highlight the heart of our town. This has been an amazing journey simply getting to this inaugural issue. A life-long resident of the Media area, Bryan Messick grew up watching his parents and grandparents as active supporters of the community. His great grandfather worked in a car dealership in town, and his grandparents, Jack and Eunice Messick, built and operated the Boat House and Rose Tree Inn in Upper Providence. His parents, Guy and Karen Messick, also worked locally, Guy operating his law firm in town and Karen teaching at Springton Lake Middle School. It was no surprise, then, when Bryan returned to the Media area after graduating from Bucknell University and committed himself to the same level of local involvement.

GIVING Bryan cites his career as the catalyst for his involvement in the Media community, having served as President of the Media Business Authority and Treasurer for both the Media Fellowship House and Hedgerow Theatre. Currently, Bryan is the Chair of the Rocky Run YMCA, and serves as a board member for the Media Theatre, the Rotary Club of Media, the Delaware County Estate Planning Commission, and the Wallingford Arts Center. He is also proud to serve on committees with both the Providence Animal Center and the Jumbo Johnson Youth Center. When asked what he loves the most about his work, Bryan told us, “I love cultivating long term relationships with clients. Everyone comes from a different place and has unique goals.” His career has allowed him not only to work with people to achieve their investment goals, but also to be a part of so many of the milestones of their lives – from buying a first home and opening a dream business to planning for a new family. Bryan has an unquestionable, genuine passion for the individuals he serves in his career. To him, his job isn’t just about numbers, goals, and transactions, rather, he considers his work to be of service to the people of his community. Bryan is invested in his clients’ stories,

their lives, and their outcomes to a degree that far surpasses any bottom line. He believes that the community thrives when the individuals within it are also able to thrive.

A VISION FOR COMMUNITY When asked what he loves the most about Media and its community, Bryan shared, “The Media community is one that knows its value, but is always striving to be better. Though Media already has so much to offer, the leaders and community members are always working to make it even better.” He knows that all of the amazing things Media has to offer are important reasons that so many people are joining the community. But, he also believes that the individuals who become a part of the local, tight-knit community will also contribute their own, unique assets to the growing local scene. Bryan is inspired by his belief that helping your neighbors and freely giving of your strengths builds both a stronger community and a stronger individual.

LOCAL RECOMMENDATIONS Unable to choose a favorite, Bryan offers a nod to the impressive quality of the restaurant selection in Media and recommends Dining Under the Stars as a “can’t miss event.” He also loves the walkability of the Media area, and cites Ridley Creek State Park and Tyler Arboretum as great places to visit if you love being outdoors. And, in line with his own unquestionable commitment to Media and its continued betterment and growth, Bryan added, “There are so many great organizations in and around Media that are looking for volunteers at many different commitment levels. Being involved and effecting change can be a very powerful motivator.” He encourages all members of the community to find a place to give back. No matter what interests you, there is certainly a fitting organization, event, or charity that could use your unique gifts and talents.

Being involved and effecting change can be a very powerful motivator.” FAMILY FIRST Despite his success and long running list of commitments and organizations he supports, Bryan is equally, if not more committed to his family. He frequently supports his wife Kelly and girls’ love of animals by fostering. An open book about being a

father of two girls, Reagan (10) and Kendall (8), who keep him on his toes, Bryan admits, “I am frequently asked to play ''salon”, one of my daughters’ favorite make believe games. So throughout the year, there’s a good chance my toenails are painted a wide variety of different colors.”

As a young child growing up in the Philippines, Rolando Corpus was surrounded by music. He was the youngest of five boys plus a younger sister, all of whom played instruments. As the only child not playing, he was left to his own pursuits… art. While his siblings practiced under thier father's tutelage, Rolando spent his time drawing and painting. At that time, water colors were the least expensive, so he started working in that medium. His uncle, Tito Goy, who himself was an accomplished painter (Federico Aguilar Alcuaz) was visiting and noticed Rolando's keen interest in art. He invited Rolando to practice in his own studio.

Alcuaz' studio was comprised of three rooms on the 20th floor of the Manilla Hilton hotel – a bedroom and 2 rooms for painting. Alcuaz introduced Rolando to oils, providing him with the paints, pallet, and canvas to take his passion further. Often after school, Rolando would take public transportation for over an hour to his uncle's studio to learn and paint. At first, he says, he felt he was quite terrible, but after time and under his uncle's guidance, he became more and more proficient. His uncle's encouragement and support had a great impact on his life. So much so, that Rolando was awarded a scholarship to St. Joe’s in Fine Arts and History here in Philadelphia. There he learned how to blend his passion for art with computer technology which opened up another creative outlet as a graphic designer. This is currently his professional field. But his passion has always been painting. Rolando says he looks at the simple things right in front of him to paint…light values, shapes, colors…it’s all right there. "I paint what I see." He enjoys abstract art, but when he paints, he leans towards what he describes as, "the simple beauty in what’s in front of me." When he walks through Media, he says he sees so much inspiration in everyday life. Visually, Media provides him with wonderful subject matter on every corner. Our story begins with the Lenape - the original inhabitants of Delaware, New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Southern New York. For over 10,000 years, they have been the caretakers of these lands and The River of Human Beings, also known as the Delaware River. The land we call Tyler provided them with food, shelter, and community. The Minshall family originally purchased the land from William Penn in 1681 and these 650 acres of the Arboretum influenced the history of Media, Pennsylvania. The Minshalls arrived in Chester in 1682,

and one of their earliest homes is now our administrative building, Lachford Hall. In the 1800s, their descendants Jacob and his brother Minshall Painter began collecting and planting trees from around the world, including native species. Planted in radiating spokes around Lachford, allowed them to study and document how these grew in our area. The work the Painter brothers performed as citizen scientists was deeply important to them and remains a critical part of Tyler’s mission. Modern residents and visitors will find echoes of this family and their dedication to science and community building throughout Media - Painter Road, the CONTINUED >

Visit Tyler Arboretum in winter and early spring to experience the frosted tops of sumacs and nodding boughs of cedars in our 25-acre Pinetum. If you are lucky, you’ll crunch through a dusting of snow as you walk our one mile scenic loop, paved for your comfort. Hikers can take on one of the five trails that meander across 17 miles of our beautiful Natural Areas. Our trails range in distances and difficulties and will lead you through meadows and forests, alongside streams, and past historic ruins. Join the Christmas Bird Count or any Wednesday Bird Walk to learn about the many feathered friends who call Tyler home for all or part of the year. favorite plants - from late December to early March, vernal witch hazel (Hamamelis vernalis) and witch hazel ‘Jelena’ (Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’), along with many other beautiful varieties, fill the air with fragrance that is a sure-fire cure for cabin fever. Earth Day Celebrations, Plant Sale, and the 12-acre Wister Rhododendron Garden light up springtime at Tyler. During our spring activities, we empower visitors to care for trees, tackle invasive species, and discover and care for new favorite plants in the home garden. With historic spring-blooming collections like magnolias, lilacs, rhododendrons, and cherry blossoms, you can visit with your family and friends to soak up the sights and scents of spring in Southeastern Pennsylvania. In summer, Tyler Arboretum is full of activities and fun for all ages, especially in the Arboretum’s Historic Core, the Pollinator Preserve, the Native Woodland Walk, and Lucille’s (Vegetable) Garden. Happy 100th to Hedgerow Theatre Hedgerow Theatre opens its 100th Anniversary Season with the Regional Premiere of Philadelphia Native, Ngozi Anyanwu’s Good Grief

Welcome to Hedgerow Theatre at 64 Rose Valley Road in Media

ARTICLE BY MARCIE BRAMUCCI In 2023, the treasured Rose Valley company, Hedgerow Theatre, celebrates a century of live theatre. To kick off the celebration, Hedgerow welcomes the Philadelphia premiere of celebrated playwright Ngozi Anyanwu and her semi-autobiographical coming-of-self-story, Good Grief, which runs Feb 8 - 26. Anyanwu has been hailed by The New York Times as a playwright who “is developing new forms!” In this cosmic, hilarious, and heart-breaking contemporary work, the young Nkechi navigates the loss of her high school love in her childhood home in the Philly suburbs. The play traverses the liminal space between the past and the present while navigating the process of grief and loss with charm and poignancy. “I am thrilled to produce Ngozi’s work in this truly milestone season,” notes Executive Artistic Director Marcie Bramucci. “I am excited for this play specifically, Good Grief - which explodes with heart and humor - to find its way home, for its Philadelphia Regional premiere. Hedgerow’s legacy of

producing bold works dates back to our founding. 1. Combine water, syrup, and salt pinch in a pan over medium heat and stir in cocoa powder.

Most people believe a plant-based diet is strictly for those vegan and vegetarian types, but there is no debating the overwhelming evidence showing the benefits of improved health for those who make that diet choice. Plant based eating is more of a lifestyle than a diet. You are simply eating more foods that are closer to their harvested state with minimal processing. Meatless diets have been shown to improve health outcomes by lowering the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, inflammation, and some cancers. It also improves gut health because of added fiber to your diet. A plant-based diet still allows you to consume the carbohydrates, protein, fats, minerals and vitamins that are necessary for good health, with the added benefits of being higher in fiber and phytonutrients. You do not have to give up meat entirely, and there are labels to identify where you fall in your plant eating journey. Do what is comfortable for you so you will stick with it. You can choose to be a flexitarian which means you occasionally eat meat but you choose plants as the primary foods you eat. You have some flexibility with your diet. If you choose to be a vegetarian, then you do not eat meat but you still eat eggs and dairy products as opposed to being a vegan who eats no animal products. There is also another reason to add more fruits and vegetables to your daily food intake; It is better for the environment. The industries that produce our dairy and meats are said to account for a third of the world’s water usage in addition to producing greenhouse gas emissions. Eat your greens and save the planet!

Plant based diet does not mean boring. You can create a variety of dishes including ethnic meals that are meat free and delicious. This is a great time to try new spices to add a punch to your vegetables and add green leafy vegetables to your smoothies. 3. Use the whole plant because there are nutrients in every part of the plant including the stems, and leaves. Use the leaves from celery, radishes, beets and carrots, and use the stems from spinach. Don’t throw away vital nutrients like potassium, vitamin C and fiber. You are also reducing waste. 4. Eat the rainbow! Choose different colored fruits and vegetables to get a variety of nutrients. The color of plant-based foods is often an indicator of the vitamins and minerals they contain. So, more colors mean more nutrients. Example: Orange foods contain beta carotene, the precursor for vitamin A. 5. If you do not eat any animal products, you will need to take a B12 and possibly an iron supplement. Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin available only in animal products. Low B12 can cause anemia and damage to the nervous system. Some vegan foods are fortified with vitamin B12. 6. A meat free diet does not automatically mean healthy if you replace the meat with highly processed junk food and meat substitutes. You need to eat good, fresh quality fruits, vegetables and grains to get the health benefits that can add years to your life.
