Vesting In Besting
Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things such as our community, our relationships, our finances and our health with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact. We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations.
On a larger scale, we can participate in public surveys and stay educated and involved with future city planning. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets long-term financial goals and secures our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.
While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this edition, we wanted to share about some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances and with those that we love.
We also wanted to encourage everyone to pause and soak in nature's beauty as we change seasons and as we observe Earth Day.

Embracing Franchise Opportunities
ROXANNE RAPSKE HELPS ENTREPRENEURS UNLOCK SUCCESSFUL FRANCHISE OWNERSHIPS
ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS
CAREER ADVICE | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES

Roxanne Rapske Imagine voluminous franchise possibilities to size up.
Ever wondered what it would be like to go into business for yourself, yet find yourself unsure of how to begin?
Roxanne Rapske, a seasoned franchise specialist at FranNet, draws upon her two decades of experience in Corporate America, and her firsthand knowledge of launching a successful business to assist individuals in identifying the ideal business opportunity that optimizes their chances of success.
After spending 20 years as a mortgage banker in Corporate America, Roxanne says she faced a sudden loss of income during the 2007 recession, prompting her to re-evaluate her career path. Following extensive research, she transitioned to become an independent franchise consultant. In 2013, Roxanne joined FranNet as a franchise specialist, drawing on her personal experience to guide others through similar career transitions.
Reflecting on her journey, Roxanne emphasizes her unique perspective as someone who weathered challenges and found success in the franchising industry.
She shares, "I have personally experienced the impact of the great recession, transitioning into franchising during a challenging economic period. Despite the adversity, this journey has been a transformative experience, allowing me to reclaim my life and become a better mother, wife and daughter.”
When considering franchise opportunities, Roxanne says it's important to understand the three main types available.
First, there are brick-and-mortar franchises, encompassing businesses such as retail outlets, restaurants, hotels and car service shops. Initial investments for these ventures typically range from $300,000 to $1 million-plus. Second, service-based franchises, such as roofing or housecleaning companies, offer nonbrick-and-mortar options with lower investment requirements, typically falling between $100,000 and $300,000. Last, business-to-business franchises, such
as signage or direct mail companies, some of which can begin as home-based operations, offer a more affordable entry point for prospective franchisees.
Roxanne sees her role as a franchise expert as playing matchmaker, with a portfolio of approximately 300 vetted franchises at her disposal.
Using her clients' entrepreneur profiles and assisting them in constructing a solid business model, she says she gains insight into their skill sets, interests, experience, finances and goals. This information allows her to carefully match them with franchises that align well on both ends.
Emphasizing that franchises are awarded rather than purchased, Roxanne highlights the selective nature of franchise companies in the process. Typically starting with four different franchise options, she says a client will typically invest 10 to 15 hours per week engaging with and learning more about each one.
Roxanne meets with her clients weekly to ensure their questions are thoroughly addressed. Through a process of elimination, she guides her clients in gathering the necessary information to make informed decisions, typically taking 30 to 90 days.
"It's important to make a well-rounded decision based on logic, intuition and careful consideration rather than solely on emotion," she assures.
Committed to her client's success, she says she's deeply involved in every step of the process, ensuring no crucial details are overlooked and no shortcuts are taken. "My goal is to see my clients thrive, using a hands-on approach to set them up for success."
Roxanne's clientele is diverse, including transitioning or laid-off executives, the underemployed, and individuals seeking a change from their corporate environments. She says she's observed a growing interest among teachers and nurses looking for new opportunities and specializes in assisting military veterans transitioning to entrepreneurship.

“By aligning with a proven concept, you are tapping into a foundation of success rather than reinventing the wheel.”
- Roxanne Rapske, franchise specialist at FranNet.
CAREER ADVICE | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES 28
Many of her clients seek guidance on exiting their current career paths or diversifying their income streams.
Roxanne also works with individuals nearing retirement who wish to pursue post-retirement endeavors, as well as spouses seeking to re-enter the workforce or supplement their income. Whether they are existing business owners, investors or employed individuals, Roxanne says she provides tailored franchising solutions. She notes the evolving landscape of the franchising industry, with an increasing number of women and individuals of varying ages exploring franchise opportunities.
“The trend of multi-generational families entering franchising is on the rise, offering a pathway to leave a legacy,” she adds.
Roxanne has noticed a significant increase in interest compared to just a year ago, with more individuals seeking to establish additional revenue streams amidst potential layoffs. Many are proactively exploring franchise opportunities as a contingency plan. The Dallas market stands out for its rapid pace of franchise concept sales and remarkable growth. A trend observed is the upfront purchase of multiple franchise units, often in three-pack or five-pack configurations, with a focus on territory ownership for scalability. Initial investments are typically concentrated in a single brand, with diversification occurring after establishing several units. Many investors are drawn to semi-absentee business models that can be managed by hired personnel, allowing for a hands-off approach once operations are established. Despite concerns about inflation and high interest rates, Roxanne notes the franchise industry in the Dallas region remains resilient.
Clients incur no costs for Roxanne’s services, as she is compensated by the franchises seeking assistance in finding the perfect match for their concept. Success in franchising hinges on leveraging a proven business model to provide clients with the optimal opportunity for success as business owners.
“I firmly believe that individuals are in control of their own destinies and I find great fulfillment in advising those interested in embarking on a franchise journey and seizing control of their lives,” she says.
“When embarking on a business venture, there is inherent risk. However, by franchising and investing in a proven model
backed by thorough research, you effectively mitigate that risk,” explains Roxanne. “By aligning with a proven concept, you are tapping into a foundation of success rather than reinventing the wheel.”
Entering the world of franchising can be a daunting task, with the overwhelming amount of information available online and the fear of missing out on the perfect opportunity. To navigate this process successfully, Roxanne recommends these five tips.
1. Seek guidance from a local franchise consultant: Instead of relying solely on Internet research, find a franchise consultant in your local market with whom you feel comfortable and trust. Their expertise can help navigate the complex world of franchising.
2. Take Time: Rushing into a franchise agreement can lead to regrets down the line. Allow yourself 30 to 90 days to thoroughly research and evaluate potential opportunities before deciding.
3. Consult with a franchise lawyer: Before signing any agreements, it’s crucial to have a franchise lawyer review the terms to ensure you fully understand your rights and obligations.
4. Financial preparedness is key: Understand your household expenses and create a budget that includes reserves to cover your household for at least 12 months, as well as the cash portion of the franchise purchase.
5. Align your skills and passion: Choose a franchise that aligns with your skill set and interests to ensure a fulfilling and sustainable business venture. Avoid falling into the trap of buying a franchise that feels like just another job; aim for something that excites you every day.
Roxanne and her colleague Sara Waskow co-host the podcast “Unpredicted Entrepreneur,” offering listeners insights into the benefits of franchising as a pathway to business ownership. The show features firsthand accounts of entrepreneurial triumphs, providing a valuable resource for aspiring business owners.

Ross Dental Studios Provides 'Elevating Dentistry' For Truly Different Dental Experience
At Ross Dental Studio in Prosper, JaTerra Ross, D.D.S., says she envisions a space where every patient leaves with a confident and healthy smile. Driven by a passion for redefining dental experiences, she recalls choosing dentistry to alleviate the common fears and anxieties associated with dental visits.
Ross Dental Studio is a general family practice, taking care of the young to the young at heart. Its services include preventative dentistry, restorative dentistry, emergency care
and teeth whitening. Routine bi-annual dental exams and cleanings help Dr. Ross detect issues early, so action can be taken, saving patients time and money, and preventing larger dental issues.
Even with excellent care, however, teeth and gums can be susceptible to disease, infection, cavities, cracks or other forms of damage. Dr. Ross confirms that she offers judgment-free care for patients with every dental need.
“Patients immediately sense the relaxed atmosphere upon entering the office. Comfort is a top priority,” Dr. Ross says.
Recognizing that anxiety often stems from the mere presence of a dental office, the studio provides amenities such as a beverage station, warm blankets and wireless headphones linked to overhead TVs featuring Netflix and Disney+. These offerings aim to establish an environment where patients feel secure, at ease, and experience dentistry that seamlessly integrates technology and artistry without any pressure.
“Our team definitely sets us apart from other dental offices,” says Dr. Ross. “We are often told how friendly the staff is, and that I have a calming presence that helps them to also relax.”
When patients are first seated in the chair, Dr. Ross says she and her staff take time to get to know them. “We ask how their day has CONTINUED >

been going, where they are from, about their family, and any other important things going on in their life. We focus on establishing a good rapport with every patient,” she adds.
Dr. Ross says that she doesn’t want to treat strangers, rather she “takes care of family.” She finds that this builds trust, as well as a realization that she cares about the patient’s overall health, not just their teeth.
“By the end of their visit, our patients leave feeling like family,” explains Dr. Ross. “We truly take the time to get to know our patients before discussing anything dental-related.”
Dr. Ross stresses the importance of regular dental visits, recommending at least biannual check-ups every six months. These appointments go beyond
examining teeth and gums. They include an oral cancer screening for the head and neck region, ensuring overall health. Early detection of issues is crucial, as addressing them at this stage is typically less discomforting and more manageable. Dr. Ross proactively provides guidance, alerting patients to areas overlooked during brushing to prevent the progression of potential cavities or gum problems. In essence, routine cleaning and exams contribute to both long-term oral and general health.
Ross Dental Studio provides an inclusive and cost-effective membership plan for both adults and children, ensuring that quality dental care remains accessible to all. The adult wellness plan, catering to patients 14 years and older, is available at $38 per month. For children aged 13 and below, the child membership plan is offered at $30 per month. Each plan encompasses two annual exams and cleanings, two fluoride treatments, all necessary X-rays, one emergency exam and a 10 percent discount on additional treatments. There are no yearly maximums, no deductibles, no claim forms and no waiting periods.
Dr. Ross says she’s enthused to be part of the Prosper community. She often visits daycares and early childhood centers to give presentations to the children about oral health and healthy foods and to pass out toothbrushes. Her staff also is in the beginning stages of partnering with a local nonprofit organization.

Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. It's often envisioned as a period of relaxation, exploration and deep connection with family and friends. However, this dream doesn't just manifest. It necessitates forward-thinking and detailed planning, regardless of one's financial status. Amid global economic changes, evolving life expectancies and intricate tax systems, an all-encompassing and strategic retirement plan is more crucial than ever.
A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it's equally important to branch out. Dividend-bearing stocks can provide regular dividends, bonds offer both periodic interest and principal return and real estate, whether directly or indirectly owned, has potential for both rental income and value growth. Private investments can also yield passive income and impressive returns.
Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one's overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for tax-free withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.
SOURCES OF INCOME DURING RETIREMENT
Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can
offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Available in varieties like fixed, variable and indexed, they often come with tax advantages. However, retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.
Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.
Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), while not familiar to everyone, can be a potential retirement income source. Historically rooted, DSTs offer a form of passive real estate investment, which can lead to regular distributions. They also open doors to 1031 exchange possibilities, offering tax deferral benefits. But, just like any other investment, DSTs have their limitations, notably the lack of liquidity and the heavy reliance on trust management.
Introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZs) were designed to spur economic development. Investing in these zones can lead to deferral, reduction and even the potential elimination of certain capital gains taxes. However, they often require a long-term investment horizon, and retirees must be well-versed with the specifics of the chosen opportunity zone.
“USING STRATEGIES LIKE TAX-LOSS HARVESTING CAN BALANCE OUT CAPITAL GAINS, ENSURING PROACTIVE STEPS TO REDUCE TAX IMPACT.”

Retirement
Rental Income remains a favorite for many looking for consistent returns. Whether through direct property ownership or Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), real estate can offer passive income, tax benefits and appreciation. Yet, the responsibilities tied to property management, the uncertainties of market fluctuations and other associated costs must not be ignored.
The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.
ESTATE PLANNING AND PHILANTHROPY
Beyond the immediate realm of retirement, estate planning emerges. This encompasses not just post-retirement arrangements but also asset distribution for future generations or charitable endeavors. Regularly reviewing wills, trusts and beneficiary designations ensures alignment with changing circumstances.
Philanthropy seamlessly integrates with retirement plans. Beyond fulfilling a personal mission to give back, it also carries financial benefits. Using instruments like donor-advised funds or charitable trusts lets individuals make impactful societal contributions while enjoying tax advantages.
You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one's retirement strategy.

EMBRACING A PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUR BODY
Wellness isn’t about restricting — it’s really about giving. Giving to yourself and to your body in a way that allows them both to thrive. The cool part? The things that give to your body naturally give to your mind, your hormones, your earth, your relationships, and so on — it’s all beautifully interconnected in that way.
Work in partnership with your body. Listen to it, support it, give to it, forgive it — and I promise it’ll give back. Repeat after me: I love myself as the most important and committed partner I will ever have
Eat your greens, cook at home, choose local produce and quality meats, don’t be scared of healthy fats — but also support local farmers, move in a way that makes your body and mind feel good, prioritize times of mindfulness and stillness, fuel your body in a way that is sustainable for both you and the planet, practice gratitude and empathy, give yourself grace when you lose routine, don’t try to make changes overnight, ditch the guilt, and always always be kind to yourself.

HOW TO DESIGN A RELAXING SPACE
ARTICLE BY EMILY FOSTER INTERIORS
HOME UPDATE | HOME + DESIGN 46
INVESTING IN HOME DESIGN CAN GIVE YOU A PEACEFUL SANCTUARY WHERE YOU CAN ESCAPE FROM THE STRESSES OF DAILY LIFE. SO GO AHEAD, TAKE THE PLUNGE AND REVAMP YOUR LIVING SPACES – IT’S WORTH EVERY PENNY!
There are many things that can help a room feel relaxing, but let’s keep it simple and focus on my top three. I would say that one must incorporate good lighting, great textures, and a decluttered space to truly get the cozy vibes. Let’s tackle each.
GOOD LIGHTING
It is imperative that there are multiple sources of light in a space. A room needs a soft warm light, so I always like to use a light bulb between 2,700k and 3,000k. Also, and I see this so many times, all lights should have the same temperature light bulb to avoid clashing. It’s not enough to just have recessed or pendant lighting. I always add a table or floor lamp to a space to truly have ambient light. Also, candles are a must for me. They can be scented candles (an extra way to add relaxation) or I like to use remote control tapered candles, so I don’t have to worry about cleaning up wax later.
GREAT TEXTURES
Textures are seen in toss pillows, rugs, draperies, throw blankets and furniture upholstery. Textures add color, pattern and visual interest. I like to use at least three different textures to help a room feel lived-in and welcoming.
DECLUTTERING
So many times, a person thinks that every nook and cranny and every wall need to have something, and this is not the case. A decluttered space is actually more relaxing because overcrowding of items doesn’t quiet the mind. Decluttering a space can be overwhelming, I get it, so just do it in stages. You’ll love the outcome when the room is tidy, organized and you are only surrounded with what brings you joy.
