For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement because it presents us with a reset, new horizons and goals to pursue, especially when it comes to our health. We planned this edition from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes for fitness by checking boxes for the short term but by valuing what's sustainable over the long run. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, long-term improvements to everyone's physical, emotional and mental health. Industry analysts indicate the following healthcare trends are ones to especially monitor during 2024: generative artificial intelligence (AI), making it easier to implement and interpret results that generate personalized recommendations; convergence of mental and physical healthcare delivery; increasing virtual healthcare assistants; shift from reactive to proactive approaches in preventive health care; elderly care advancements; and 3D technology to print tools and devices, including surgical instruments, orthopedic or dental implants and prosthetics. Please join us in setting a beneficial course in wellness. Here’s to y'all! We’re rooting for you and everyone's good health. COMPASSIONATE DERMATOLOGY CARE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Specializing In Skin: Experience Gentle, Personalized Treatment At Dermatology Center of McKinney Dr. James Ralston and Practice Manager Rachel Ralston

H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H EALTH + WEL L NESS
As a new year begins, there’s no better moment to prioritize mental and physical well-being. Dr. James Ralston, M.D., F.A.A.D., at the Dermatology Center of McKinney, works to transform lives through healthy skin. Specializing in a range of treatments, from addressing persistent challenges, such as rosacea and psoriasis, to managing everyday concerns such as acne, he says he combines expertise and compassion to make skin health a top priority. Dr. Ralston is a board-certified dermatologist who has dedicated his career to providing exceptional care in the field. After completing his medical education at the University of Texas at Houston, he pursued a dermatology residency in New York. It was during this time he says his passion for skin cancer and photodynamic therapy flourished, leading him to develop an innovative technique that uses lasers for effective treatment. He then did a second fellowship in Georgia, focusing on advanced skin cancer surgery. “I’m not a typical doctor,” explains Dr. Ralston. “I love dermatology and can’t get enough of it.” In 2008, Dr. Ralston and his wife, Rachel, established the Dermatology Center of McKinney, initially equipped with three exam rooms. Over the past 15 years, their practice has grown to 13 exam rooms. They also opened an aesthetic wellness business that’s attached to the clinic. CONTINUED > JANUARY 2 0 2 4 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Dermatology Center of McKinney operates on a balance of medical, surgical and cosmetic/aesthetic dermatology, specializing in all aspects of skin, hair and nails for the whole family. From acne to wrinkles, discoloration, eye bags, skin tightening, fat reduction and muscle toning, the practice uses the latest devices and technologies for aesthetic wellness and body contouring. Dr. Ralston says with his background in skin cancer surgery, he knows the nuances of facial anatomy, which he uses to optimize treatments such as Botox and fillers. He notes that the practice’s most popular cosmetic treatments are Botox, Dysport, Juvederm, Restylane, EmSculpt Neo, EmFace, EmSella, Sofwave, next-generation hair removal, radiofrequency microneedling, intense pulsed light and a variety of lasers. “Everyone who works at the Dermatology Center of McKinney is passionate about [healthy] skin,” says Dr. Ralston. “We’re passionate about wellness and aim to have patients excited about taking care of the largest organ, the skin.” Dr. Ralston believes the Dermatology Center of McKinney stands out among other dermatology practices for several reasons. The practice operates from a single location, allowing for direct supervision and collaboration between Dr. Ralston, a board-certified dermatologist, and a skilled team, which includes a physician assistant, two aestheticians/ laser techs and other dedicated professionals. He adds that this close-knit approach ensures patients receive the highest quality care and attention. He says he takes great pride in being independently owned, a rarity in an era where many practices are acquired by private equity firms. He affirms that this independence grants him the freedom to prioritize the best interests of patients and stay at the forefront of advancements in dermatological care. “We’re always watching for new innovations, looking toward FDA approvals and researching to be most effective when treating our patients,” states Dr. Ralston. “We’re able to leverage the latest technologies and treatments, ensuring our patients benefit from the most cutting-edge options available.”
14
H EA LT H Y LIF E ST Y LE | H E ALT H + WE LLN E SS
A personal motivation drives Dr. Ralston’s commitment to skin cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. His own experience of losing a grandfather to melanoma as a child fueled his dedication to becoming an expert in this field. Dermatology Center of McKinney employs advanced technologies, such as dermoscopy, electronic mole analysis and body imaging. By combining artificial intelligence with physician analysis, Dr. Ralston can detect skin cancer at earlier stages than ever before. Additionally, the practice uses noninvasive mole testing technology that examines mole DNA and RNA through the application of a simple sticker on the skin. This innovative approach allows the identification of subtle abnormalities before they become visible, enabling proactive intervention. Mental health and dermatology are interconnected, with the skin being the first thing people notice. Dr. Ralston recently did a radio interview about psoriasis in which he discussed the impact psoriasis has on mental health and self-esteem. “Depression is a complication of psoriasis that’s not discussed enough. It’s so rewarding to hear patients come back to the clinic after successful psoriasis treatment to say their skin is clear and they put on shorts or went swimming for the first time in years.” The Dermatology Center of McKinney staff works hard to make cosmetic treatments affordable for everyone, offering Botox memberships and cosmetic savings plans. Dr. Ralston says they reward patients who participate in memberships with the lowest possible prices, trying to remove the roadblocks to healthy skin. Dr. Ralston says he believes patients are part of his work family. “The biggest honor is when we treat whole families. Some of my very first patients were in high school when the practice opened and now, they’re married and bringing their own kids. This is so rewarding, it means our patients are happy to trust us to help again.”
by a concerned partner or family member, often after waiting excessively. However, it’s crucial to note that early detection of skin cancer leads to a complete cure in most cases. 5. Damage can be reversed, even for those who were sun worshippers in the 1980s or who have acne scars, as there are advanced technologies available to help patients achieve flawless skin and reach their body goals. It’s recommended to start preparing six months in advance to reach goals. Visit a board-certified dermatologist to develop a strategy. Botox and fillers are great last-minute fixes, but more often patients need treatments that perpetuate neocollagenesis, and this takes time and a comprehensive approach. 972.548.0333 DermatologyMcKinney.com
Dr. Ralston shares five skin tips he believes are essential for everyone to know: 1. Patients considering cosmetic procedures should choose a board-certified physician. Board-certified dermatologists have expertise in the medical, surgical and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair and nails. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends patients do their homework and consider a provider’s training and credentials before deciding if he or she is the right choice for them. 2. Skin care does not have to be expensive; it just needs to be optimized for the individual. A dermatologist can work to determine which products will help reach skin care goals. 3. When it comes to sunscreen, if one isn’t wearing it daily, they may not have found the right one yet, as it’s crucial to find a sunscreen that suits their preferences. Whether it’s the choice between chemical or physical sunscreen, tinted or non-tinted, or sweatproof or matte, there exists a wide range of options to cater to individual needs and ensure that everyone can find a sunscreen they love and eagerly incorporate into their routine. 4. Do not delay seeking a dermatologist’s expertise, as many individuals who believe they are the sole sufferers of a specific skin problem often discover otherwise. Frequently, patients only seek dermatological assistance when urged

HOW IMPORTANT/POPULAR ARE CLEAR BRACES AND ALIGNERS?
"Both traditional brackets and wires, as an orthodontic treatment option, as well as the removable clear aligner option play important roles in orthodontics. Regarding the time-tested brackets and wires, no longer does it have to be an all-metal setup. Materials science has improved the manufacturing of clear ceramic brackets where the actual brackets can be made as small and comfortable as regular metal brackets while still being adequately strong enough to withstand the rigors of tooth movement. These brackets don't stain or change colors.
Brush and floss to remove plaque, and they'll remain virtually invisible and quite pleasant. They're so advanced, we offer this option as the best for those interested in obtaining excellent esthetic and functional results. The clear, traditional method is still the most efficient and cost-effective way to get the best results. These brackets are the esthetic answer to what clear aligners are trying to be: invisible. Clear aligners have their place as well. This treatment is popular for those not interested in fighting the clean-up battle, and are responsible enough to actually wear aligners of their own free will and choice (about 22 hours per day). WHAT IMPROVEMENTS ARE BEING MADE IN DENTAL IMPLANTS?
“Dental implants are used for a variety of purposes in dentistry such as to support a replacement tooth or a full set of teeth. They’re also used as an anchor device to support orthodontic tooth movement. Some are even designed to be removed after use for orthodontics. Refinements in the implant design properties are ever-improving. What’s important is that implants are chosen by the team based on the implant company’s research-verified quality of materials and availability of prosthetic options to restore teeth in different ways. As a prosthodontist, I work with specialists in that area to place implants where I need them according to the treatment plan. I then design and place teeth supported by implants.”
WHAT STRIDES ARE IN DENTAL 3D PRINTING?
“3D printing is the modern way to create teeth models used for preparing restorations such as crowns, custom brackets and wires, or clear aligners. After creating a high-resolution intraoral scan of the teeth, the prosthetic teeth or appliances can be designed and printed in various materials. Advances are in the availability of better software to design, such as by allowing visualizations of a smile design. Other improvements are in the speed and accuracy of the printed models. We use this technology in our practice in conjunction with the labs that fabricate components designed for each patient. Lingual, or tongue-side orthodontic treatment, for example, is based on 3D scanning and modeling.” CONTINUED >

IS ORTHODON TIC S FOR PEOPLE OF A LL AGE S?
Having an actual specialist in orthodontics to create and carry out the plan will ensure better results because the principles of esthetics and sound tooth movement don’t change just because it’s not braces. After a digital scan of the teeth, specialized software is used to align teeth virtually using sound biomechanical principles of tooth movement. With good treatment planning and a dedication to excellence, clear aligners can work quite nicely.”
"It’s nice to get the job done early in life to reap the benefits of functionally well-aligned teeth and fantastic smiles. But it's not too late if you didn’t have the chance as a youngster. In many adult cases, it’s best to have orthodontics first as part of a comprehensive plan to replace missing teeth. Most adults have some wear on their teeth, which detracts from a youthful smile. Orthodontics, in conjunction with a well-conceived restorative plan, can create a smile that turns the clock back 20 years. We’ve treated people from 8 years old to 80 plus years."

WHAT ROLE DO MINIMALLY INVASIVE TECHNIQUES PLAY IN YOUR PRACTICE?
“We educate patients constantly about elements of pleasing smiles: 1) Teeth are in the right place within the framework of lips; 2) Gum lines are symmetrical, even, firm and expose the full length of the crown for best proportion; and 3) White teeth. Achieving all of this can be ‘minimally invasive.’ Orthodontics should be considered to get teeth in the right position. Next, any cleanup of un-esthetic gums should be addressed; this could require minor laser contouring, which is painless for the most part. Lastly, tooth whitening can really make the smile pop.”
WHAT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCEDRIVEN TECHNIQUES OR DIAGNOSTICS WILL SHAPE FUTURE ORTHODONTICS?
“During our complimentary orthodontic exam, I evaluate patients’ smiles and take a number of teeth measurements. I dictate a rather cryptic code of numbers and obscure words to my treatment coordinator who puts them in the computer. I often joke with patients that with all of that code, the computer will now tell me what to do. It turns out it really isn’t a joke after all. There are promising applications for AI in orthodontics, particularly in time savings. AI in daily clinical routines can be used as a quality-control procedure. It will probably not, however,
22
EXP E RT H E LP | HEALTH + WE LLN E SS
be able to replace the artistic component and professional experience of human experts.”
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF ORTHODONTICS LOOK LIKE, ESPECIALLY IN PERSONALIZED TREATMENT PLANS?
“The future of orthodontics is in using modern tools to diagnose and treatment plan orthodontic care. These ever-improving tools allow for the upfront designing of more accurate appliances such as custom brackets and robotically bent wires, and better software and materials for aligning teeth with clear aligners. All of this improves patients’ treatment experiences. Better tools allow for faster treatment in a shorter period of time, with more precise outcomes.”
WHAT ELSE SHOULD LIFESTYLE READERS KNOW?
“Although treatment times are reduced and results are better, there’s much more to it than that. If you get through braces or a complex treatment plan, and all you got was straight teeth, then I’d have to say we’ve failed. We want to educate you, get to know you, and be friends. We really listen to each patient’s concerns, and closely look at teeth and smiles so we don’t miss anything. We want patients’ experience with us to be money, time and effort well-spent.” 3595 S. Laughter Among Best Medicine Some Say Humor Makes Everything Better--Just Ask A Local Lawyer ARTICLE BY JULES MICHÈLLE
R O C K Y
D H I R :
"Let’s shake things up!"
Frisco-based attorney Rocky Dhir sometimes speaks to other lawyers about clean comedy, what lawyers can learn from stand-up and how to get through bombing onstage. This CEO and president of Atlas Legal Research has performed live comedy since 2021. Lifestyle asked Rocky how comedy contributes to people's happiness, health and well-being.
DOES COMEDY IMPROVE LIFE?
"The obvious answer is comedy, when done well, makes us laugh, which releases endorphins, leading to feeling well. The less obvious answer is comedy makes us more empathetic. Comedy helps us see various ways in which others suffer (bad relationships, tough upbringings, financial struggles, mental health challenges) and how, even in adversity, we can see humor, laugh and derive joy. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of comedy is it makes us smarter. Unless there's a pie making contact with a face, comedy is about finding commonality between seemingly disjointed concepts. Good comedy makes you think and broaden your viewpoints."
BESIDES LOWERING BLOOD PRESSURE AND BURNING CALORIES, ISN'T IT GOOD FOR HEARTS TO LAUGH?
"I'm not a doctor, though I'd love to play one on TV if anyone wants to cast me. I'm therefore not qualified to give medical advice. That’s a good thing because doctors freak out if patients have enlarged hearts, so telling people laughter will give them big hearts might send the wrong message. Photo courtesy of Rocky Dhir.

B ACK STAGE | A RTS + C ULTURE
However, laughter can, and does, make our hearts fuller. As a lawyer, I must give a disclaimer ('cuz that’s what my kind does): laughter is most effective when we laugh WITH each other, when it comes from a place of love. Laughing AT another is usually counter-productive, unless you're laughing at me while I'm performing. Comedy and laughter can unite us. Whether laughing about airline travel, doctor visits, marriage or other topics, we typically laugh when we recognize a piece of our own ridiculousness. Humans are ultimately a bunch of adults with the means to cause the mischief we were denied as kids. When we realize that and learn to take ourselves less seriously, it can make not just our hearts, but our entire lives, fuller." CONTINUED >

WHY DID YOU GET INTO STAND-UP COMEDY?
"Every Indian mom dreams of her child becoming a doctor. But I lacked brains and discipline, so I ended up going to law school. Ultimately, I always wanted to heal people in some way, and I'm a huge ham onstage (ironically, I'm vegetarian, so I kinda' disapprove of myself). Growing up, I always noticed comedy and laughter had a tendency to disarm people and build bridges. When we laugh at ourselves, we notice we've more in common than we realize. Across gender, race, ethnicity and all things that can divide us, all of us are trying to make enough living to relax a little and just be ourselves. Stand-up helps us tap into that, and I wanted to learn the art form."
WHY IS WATCHING COMEDIANS 'GOOD MEDICINE'?
"When I'm onstage and the audience is laughing, I notice something magical: all pain disappears. For the 10, 20, 30 or however many minutes I'm performing, those in attendance get to forget their problems and worries. They're engrossed in the narrative and are too busy laughing to be thinking of the world outside. I love that feeling. And I love any comedian who puts their heart and soul into bringing happiness to their audiences. Comedians are living, breathing pain meds. You cannot overdose on us; you can (and should) mix us with alcohol; and your insurance doesn’t care if you see us because you pay out-of-pocket. It’s perfect." Move More : We don’t care how you do it. Walk, stroll, meander, paddle, climb or dance to get your body moving. Research shows an active body is less likely to feel anxious or depressed.
B e Gen erous: Generosity helps reset thought processes and sparks joy. Schedule regular times this year to be generous with your time or other resources by volunteering or donating.

To better juggle all of life's variables, you get to say 'no' to some of the things that don’t bring you health and wellness. This year, enjoy more rest while you focus on your mental health and whole-person well-being!
Time with friends and family (or 'Framily') who make you feel loved and appreciated, and who make you laugh, is priceless and can be a serious mood booster. Make regular space for this need in 2024.

Transforming Wellness Goals Into Realit y ARTICLE BY LISA HAMMETT
Advice Editorial: Kick New Year’s Resolutions To The Curb And Crush 2024 Health Goals
A top New Year’s Resolution every year is getting healthy and fit. Studies show that 25% of those who make resolutions, drop off after one week. This increases to 29% after two weeks, 36% by month end, and 54% after six months. In my experience, as a wellness and certified positive intelligence PQ coach, good intentions alone do not produce results. They must be followed by a solid plan and specific actions. Stating that one will lose weight by eating healthy and going to the gym sets the intention, but doesn’t give a roadmap to get there. There are not enough specifics to provide guidance and accountability. The same applies to going to the gym. Do you spend 30 minutes lifting weights or are you jogging on a treadmill? Your actions must be specific and include what you’re going to do, when you’re going to do it, how frequently and who you will do it with, if applicable. When goals are unrealistic, resolutions fail. For example, setting an unrealistic weight loss goal in a short period of time. Whereas, setting small,
specific, realistic goals sets the individual up for success, creating positive reinforcement to continue with the behavior. Resolutions often fail because of mindset. If losing a substantial amount of weight seems impossible, it is. What we think about, creates our belief system, which drives our behavior. When working with clients, before we set goals and create an action plan, we focus on mindset, by identifying limiting beliefs that are sabotaging efforts to be successful. Once these beliefs are recognized and accepted as untruths, they can be replaced with helpful, encouraging thoughts that will drive positive behavior change. For more practical tips to achieve wellness success, check out my best-selling book, From Burnout to Best Life, How to Take Charge of Your Health & Happiness, which is available on Amazon.com. 214.725.7650 LisaHammett.com LisaHammett.com/BurnoutToBestLife

“We take pride in our work and put lots of love into blankets we make, knowing they'll bring comfort and security to children in crisis.” Project Linus is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to comforting critically ill and traumatized infants or children with new, handmade security blankets. Volunteers for the Collin/Cooke/Grayson/ Rockwall County Project Linus Chapter distribute sewn, quilted, fleece, knitted or crocheted blankets. Mental health professionals confirm blankets often relieve anxieties. “The blankets we make for NICU and for the sheriff and police are special to us,” explains McKinney resident and Project Linus volunteer Midge Thompson. “The first responders carry our blankets in their cars and give out when needed, such as for car accidents or abuse.” She delivers the blankets to hospitals and medical centers, including McKinney Medical City (NICU and pediatric surgery), Baylor McKinney NICU, Baylor Centennial NICU, Texas Health Southwest, Samaritan Inn, Hope Women’s Center and Centennial Baylor Scott & White. Midge says 15 volunteers meet at the Heard-Craig Carriage House on the second Tuesday of each month from 1-4 p.m. “We’re small but growing. We get new people every month as word gets out.”

“If we hear of a child in crisis and they happen to like a certain superhero or theme, we’ll get that blanket to nurses to hand out,” Midge says. “Sometimes when we get a thank you, we also gain a person who thinks what we do is special and then they want to help. It’s also fun to get a note that our blanket is someone’s favorite and they use it every day,” she adds. A ll Project Linus prov ided blanket s must be new and handmade. Midge says they receive donat ions of fabric, yar n, cash, check s and gif t cards to JoA nn Fabric & Craf t Store and Walmar t for supplies. Those w ishing to donate f unds or supplies, or to make blanket s at home, should email for thmar@msn.com or call 972 .998. 3378 to secure cur rent needs. Regina Forthman, Project Linus Chapter coordinator, says JoAnn’s gift cards should be mailed to Project Linus, P.O. Box 187, Lavon, TX 75166. In McKinney, volunteers may drop off handmade blankets for the group in a dedicated Project Linus bin at the JoAnn Fabric & Craft Store, 2050 W. University Drive, Ste. 250.
