REAL
Marvelous Mesdames
Mothers, sisters, wives, aunts and daughters are some of the most influential women in our lives.
And of course with Mother’s Day this month, attention is on moms. However, it’s not just biological mothers, but the mother figures in our lives who've made indelible impacts on us. It’s the family members, teachers, friends and neighbors taking awesome steps in our communities, pouring into our lives -- making themselves unforgettable and irreplaceable.
While it’s always important to shop local and support our area businesses, this month is the perfect time to patronize businesses owned by women in our community. That’s one of my favorite parts of this role -- connecting with and championing the best of the best when it comes to McKinney's and and Prosper's women. They are movers and shakers, builders and makers. They are both seen and unseen. Their silent service blesses those who are under their care. Their attention to detail shows us something about beauty that can’t be seen or understood any other way.
Please take a few minutes to send a text, make a phone call, set up a special meal or get your kids on a video call with the women in your life who deserve recognition. Brighten someone’s day and remind them how much you love them.
Smiles to all,

Thriving Under Mother’s Leadership
THIRD-GENERATION, FAMILY-OWNED GOODWYN FLOORING COMPANIES PROVIDES PERSONALIZED SERVICE
Laura Goodwyn says she’s always been a problem-solver type of person. Due to unforeseen circumstances in January 2020, Laura became the primary owner of Builders Carpet & Design Center. For Laura, selling the business was never an option.
“It was not a question of ‘if,’ it was a question of ‘how.’” With many employees and installers being with the company for more than 20 years, my main priorities were to make sure everyone knew the company was stable and moving forward,” Laura recalls.
“We’re a big family, and I care about the people here,” she adds. “I wasn’t just concerned about myself but for all the employees and their livelihoods. It was important for us all to stay together.”
Originally from Lubbock, Laura’s been in North Texas for the last 43 years. While she’d been primarily out of the workforce for 40 years, her business and accounting background allowed her to keep the business running and assure employees not to be worried. “My faith in Christ and my support

After rebranding the company, Laura set up the executive board with her sons, Jason, Jordan and Trey. They then got busy doing what their family has always done –– selling flooring. "We value the specific needs of each individual client. from friends and family gave me the confidence and strength to move forward.”
Builder Carpet & Design Center started in 1982 as a family-run and managed company. After becoming the primary owner, Laura wanted to bring her three sons under one roof. To achieve this, she and her sons merged Builders Carpet & Design Center, The Eclectic Floor Company, and BC Flooring Studio and rebranded the business as Goodwyn Flooring Companies. This rebranding allowed the business to expand their regional presence, serving primarily North Texas, but they work for clients regularly in Oklahoma, West Texas, Austin, Houston and East Texas lakes.
The company is backed by decades of experience in the wood, tile and carpet industry. Goodwyn Flooring Companies service new and existing home construction, and commercial construction industries. It features a state-of-the-art showroom with budget-friendly to high-end flooring. Product offerings include solid and engineered hardwoods, ceramic tile, natural stone, LVP, area rugs and other surface coverings. The team indicates the most popular floor covering always has been solid hardwood, however, they offer a variety of oak flooring in custom finishes and stains.
“Our customer service focus and longevity sets us apart from others in the industry,” says Laura.
“Thanks to homebuilders like Shaddock Homes, GG Cain, Alford Homes, and others, we’ve been able to succeed and grow for 40 years and put ourselves in a position to provide our customers unparalleled service,” says Jason Goodwyn, president of Goodwyn Flooring Companies.
In addition to being a woman-owned business, several of the company’s interior designers and administrative staff are single and single-again women. Laura says each employee is committed to following a project through from start to finish, partnering with clients to ensure the project is done correctly. Given the stable longevity of the employees, they’ve developed personal relationships with homebuilders and customers, with many being repeat customers.
“Goodwyn Flooring Companies focuses on relationships, not the sale. That has always been our mission,” says Jason.

She Vets It
Connecting With This Unique Community For Women Veterans, Military Spouses And Dependents
ARTICLE BY JULIE BROWN PATTON
HOMETOWN HERO | WELLNESS
24
Althea Williams, She Vets It founder
She Vets It founder, Althea Williams, is a US Army combat veteran. She’s also a trailblazing podcast host who created an online community and “safe space” for women veterans and their families to provide resources and support from others who have shared experiences.
The She Vets It podcast explores topics regarding mental health, career development and issues important to women. McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle caught up with Althea to learn more about her endeavors.
Althea lived in Frisco prior to joining the military. While she currently resides in nearby Prosper, she has workspace at The Formation at The Star in Frisco. “I’ve worked with many Frisco organizations, and have strong ties to the community. I’m participating in the Frisco Veteran Advisory Council, and co-chairing the first Frisco Veteran Resource Expo on Sept. 20-21,” she says.
Her goal is to get a proclamation to host Women Veteran’s Day every year, given that Women Veterans Day has been an official holiday in Texas since 2017. “We’ll have a kick-off celebration on June 12, and I’m excited to be a part of this initiative.”
HOW DID SVI COME TOGETHER?
“This community was born out of my own experiences as a disabled Army woman veteran. I joined the military at age 39 with an MBA focused on advanced community studies, and a background as an executive director, small business development center assistant and public policy researcher. But my life took a dramatic turn when I enlisted in the Army and deployed to Afghanistan. I lost several of my battle buddies and dealt with PTSD. While stationed in Germany, I experienced a traumatic brain injury from a head-on collision that changed my life forever. Despite my medical challenges, I was determined to use my experiences to make positive impacts for women veterans and their families.
“She Vets It was created because I understood the power of community in healing, and it was what I was
looking for when I returned home from deployment. I didn’t expect it to expand beyond my local area; however, it’s grown into listeners and supporters from across the United States and internationally.”
WHAT GUEST SPEAKERS ARE SOUGHT FOR PODCASTS?
“We seek a wide variety of guest speakers who can share unique perspectives as they relate to women veterans and families, not to exclude our male veteran supporters. I aim to provide audiences with a diverse range of voices, from veterans to service providers, advocates and experts in women’s entrepreneurship, health, employment, education, career training and more.”
WHAT’S THE CLUBHOUSE APP?
“The Clubhouse app is a free, social networking platform and incredible tool that allows users to participate in live, audio conversations with other users. I started the club in 2021. There’s no charge to be part of it at Clubhouse.com/club/SheVetsIt It’s live on Instagram every Thursday, and soon will be increasing reach on YouTube, Spotify, Apple and other podcast platforms.
“I’m incredibly grateful for those who found hope and community through our platform. It’s an honor to have the support of film producers, television show producers, numerous podcasters, several cities, municipalities within the DFW community, universities and major corporations who recognize the She Vets It audience for their service.”
IN WHAT OTHER WAYS DO YOU SUPPORT VETERANS?
“I refer those who reach out for help with employment, mental health and financial support to organizations like Texas Veteran Network, Combined Arms program, Texas Veteran Commission and other vetted organizations, because what I do is for educational purposes only.

25 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MCKINNEYANDPROSPER MAY 2023
“I speak at events and conferences to discuss diversity and inclusion; the veteran transition and how to celebrate inclusive behavior within organizations; or important issues relating to military women, such as mental health, health care access, homelessness, employment and transitioning to civilian life. Women veterans often face unique challenges, including a lack of understanding or resources tailored to their specific needs.”
HOW CAN MCKINNEY & PROSPER CITY LIFESTYLE READERS SUPPORT SVI?
“I’m excited to sponsor the North Texas Training for the Veteran Sponsorship Initiative, a VHA program on June 29 at the Formation Star. It’s a program that matches transitioning service members with community-based sponsors to provide one-on-one support during the military-to-civilian transition.
“I rely on the support of listeners and supporters to continue the mission of bringing awareness of our women veterans. Everyone can subscribe to She Vets It on the website, follow on social media platforms, listen to the podcasts, volunteer time or resources with local VFW and American Legion organizations, and donate to these organizations.
“She Vets It is not a nonprofit organization, but will be in the future. By working together, we can ensure women veterans and their families receive the support and resources they need to succeed in their civilian lives.”

Pelvic floor disorders affect one in five adults and industry statistics indicate these health matters are often left untreated. Many are too embarrassed to ask questions about issues they are experiencing, or they just accept that those issues are “natural” and they must learn to live with them.
Improving quality of life begins with pelvic floor therapy, says Dr. Ijeoma Nwankpa, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT, CIDN.
She opened McKinney’s Center of Pelvic Excellence Physical Therapy & Wellness, LLC (COPE PT) three years ago as she saw the need for top-tier pelvic floor care in the area. With 13-plus years of industry experience, Dr. Nwankpa is a leader in the field and one of the few board-certified specialists in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. She says her interest in becoming a pelvic floor therapist came in her early 20s when she saw a pelvic health physical therapist and the relief she experienced personally.
“I am passionate about providing the tools to help patients take control and charge of their

COPE PT treats all genders over the age of 18 and is accessible to all. No referral is needed. Self-pay and insurance are accepted.
WHAT TO EXPECT AT FIRST PELVIC FLOOR PT APPOINTMENT:
1. Wear loose clothing for flexible movements, such as yoga pants.
2. Arrive early to complete forms. Make sure to bring copies of tests or records related to the problem.
3. The therapist will assess personal history and symptoms. They will discuss any issues, biology, and how and why it is being affected. The therapist also will need to assess areas of restriction and dysfunction so they can tailor an individualized program.
4. The therapist will need to do a physical examination, which will include the pelvic area and typically the hips, back, and abdomen as well. There will also be an internal exam. This is very important as the therapist can gain important information from this. The therapist will be doing their best to answer questions and explain processes before (and while) they happen.
5. After the assessment, the therapist will discuss their findings and what the personalized treatment plan will look like, in the office and at home. Pelvic floor physical therapy often includes activities to be done at home.

Take a Flower Arranging Class Mother’s Day arrives just as spring is in full bloom. Take advantage of the season by going to a flower arranging class with mom.
Play a Family Board Game
If Mom likes strategizing, challenge her to a friendly board game competition. (And, no, you don’t have to let her win just because it’s Mother’s Day.)
Pick Your Own Fruit
This activity is especially fun if you have a lot of kids who want to get in on the action. Then, when you all get home, you can whip up a treat for Mom with your selections. (Maybe give her a strawberry in a Champagne glass while she waits.)
Book Her a Weekend Away
There’s no day like Mother’s Day to be impulsive! Book a weekend trip for the two of you at a cute B&B in a city Mom has always wanted to visit.
Complete a Jigsaw Puzzle
Find a puzzle with an image you know your mom will love (or make a custom one using a photo of the two of you) and put it together over wine and snacks. You’ll be amazed at how much chatting you can get done while puzzling.
