Whether a father, coach, uncle, brother, stepdad, faith leader or boss, being a male role model and leading by example can make a lasting impact on those watching. We can all probably think of a man in our life that has had a big influence on us at one time or another. Whether it was someone pushing us to be a better version of ourselves, someone who sees the best in us, someone we look up to for guidance, or even someone we don’t personally know but that inspires us, we can recognize the impact these role models can make on our lives.
This month we're honoring men and their contribution to the betterment of our community and to their families. To all the men out there who are making a difference in someone’s life, big or small, we applaud you. The lasting impact that you're making and the ripple effect that often ensues is worth it.
This time, I'm dedicating my Lifestyle Letter to my father (shown here with me). He left a huge hole in my life when he passed on not long ago.

City officials for McKinney are trying the use of artificial intelligence-powered traffic signals to tackle congestion and enhance safety on roads. McKinney, along with Arlington, Dallas, Fort Worth and Garland, reportedly adopted an AI software known as “NoTraffic.” Powered by sensors and cameras, the software allows signals to sync and adjust to traffic conditions in real time. Some traffic engineers indicate AI traffic signals can money in the long run by replacing outof-date traffic timers.

Enhancing Inside And Outside Spaces With The Gotcha Covered 'Exceptional' Experience
ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY LUCY THORNTONFrom adding a touch of elegance to providing functional privacy, window treatments can play a crucial role in shaping the ambiance of a space. For residents and businesses in McKinney and surrounding areas, finding the perfect window treatments can be made seamless thanks to Gotcha Covered of McKinney.
“Small pops of color and accents can make all the difference,” says Heather McGregor, co-owner Gotcha Covered of McKinney.
In 2014, Rick and Heather McGregor recall they had a vision of being business owners and bought Gotcha Covered of McKinney. Heather says drawing from their extensive experience and commitment to delivering personalized solutions, they have cultivated a business known in the area for its dedication to customer satisfaction.
“Our decision to open our own showroom in McKinney’s Adriatica this January was fueled by the growth of our business,” says Rick.
The showroom allows clients to experience firsthand the many possibilities available to transform their spaces.
“We’ve poured our hearts into crafting this business, fueled by passion for what we do and the joy of working alongside our family and community,” states Heather. “From designing our showroom to infusing excitement into every job we do.”
The average lifespan of home window treatments is approximately seven to eight years. With infrequent
use or careful handling, their useful life can be prolonged significantly. As window treatments are operated, they undergo regular wear and tear, gradually revealing signs of aging. This represents just one of the numerous indicators necessitating replacement. Working with a window treatment company enables individuals to refresh and enhance their window coverings, addressing issues such as damage, deterioration or a desire for stylistic updates.
Whether tackling a full home makeover or a simple redesign project, Rick and Heather say their team understands the importance of offering meticulous attention to detail. By providing a diverse range of customizable options, such as blinds, shades, shutters and draperies, clients have the freedom to transform their living spaces to reflect their unique preferences and requirements.
While many competitors provide only a limited selection, Heather emphasizes that their company offers an extensive array of custom window treatments.
Instead of specializing in just one type or style, such as solely hard treatments like shutters or soft treatments like draperies, Gotcha Covered caters to a diverse range of preferences. The company primarily serves homeowners, including those in new builds and existing homes, as well as small business owners.
“There’s no limit to the types of custom blinds and shades we provide, which means there’s no limit to the customizable looks you can create,” says Heather.
Gotcha Covered of McKinney offers an extensive selection of window treatments to cater to diverse tastes and needs. From hard treatments like shutters to soft treatments like draperies, every client can find the perfect fit for their space. Two of Gotcha Covered’s top sellers are Hunter Douglas and Texton. Gotcha Covered of McKinney is a Hunter Douglas Showcase Dealer. For more than 60 years, Hunter Douglas has been a prominent figure in the window fashions industry, known for its high-end window treatments. It is recognized as an industry leader in areas such as child safety, energy efficiency, and connected home technologies.
Texton, produced locally in Garland, Texas, offers shutter and roller shade options, as well as exterior patio shades. Heather states being a family-owned business since the 1940s, Texton maintains a good price point while providing quality products.
Heather says what sets Gotcha Covered apart is its familial touch and commitment to excellence. Over the past 10 years, members of Rick and Heather’s family, including their daughter, son-in-law, as well as Rick’s brother and sister, have all become part of the business. As a family-owned and operated business, Heather explains there’s a deep sense of pride and dedication ingrained in every aspect of the business. This personal investment translates into unparalleled attention to detail and a genuine desire to exceed client expectations.
Gotcha Covered’s personalized approach ensures each project is tailored to meet the client’s expectations, from design concept to installation. From initial consultation to final installation, the focus remains on ensuring a seamless and stress-free experience for every client. The process can be outlined as follows:
1. A customer calls and schedules a complimentary design consultation, either at the showroom or in the comfort of their home. The consultant works closely to understand the client’s vision and requirements.
2. A team member from Gotcha Covered visits the customer’s home to take precise measurements and provides an immediate quote.
3. Once the customer is ready to proceed, initial payment is made initiating the order process.
“There’s no limit to the types of custom blinds and shades we provide, which means there’s no limit to the customizable looks that can be created.”
4. The company specializes in customization, offering a turnaround time that can range from as little as 3-4 weeks to a more detailed 6-8 week process, depending on factors such as the specific product, time of year, and chosen vendor. Each window treatment is meticulously tailored to the customer’s specifications, ensuring a perfect fit.
5. The customer schedules their installation at their convenience, ensuring a seamless transition to their newly enhanced space.
6. Upon completion, the customer settles any remaining payment.
7. Gotcha Covered’s commitment doesn’t end with installation. They offer ongoing service for their products, backed by a limited lifetime warranty.
into lifelong fans. “I believes that word of mouth is one of the best ways a business can market itself,” she adds.
“We love making customers happy. As locals, we’re not just here to work; we’re part of the community, committed to building meaningful relationships,” shares Heather. “Ensuring every customer’s satisfaction is our top priority, safeguarding the integrity of our reputation.”
Gotcha Covered professionals believe in doing things with integrity and always striving for the best. Heather explains they don’t just want to sell stuff; they want to make every interaction special, with professionalism, honesty, and a real love for making spaces better.

Frameless shower doors and customized glass accents give homeowners so much ongoing joy, it's an area best served by attention to detail, precision and quality-driven installations.
Steve Hood, owner of Shower Doors of Texas, says his team specializes in custom glass enclosures, including the design, fabrication and installation of shower doors and indoor spaces ranging from traditional to modern styles. "We especially enjoy providing luxurious, frameless shower doors that are custom-built, as well as decorative glass for projects such as cabinets, wine cellars and mirrors," he adds.
Frameless shower doors continue to reign in popularity during 2024, as they offer a seamless blend of elegance and functionality. Steve says this shower approach is the best way to showcase tile and create a luxurious look in bathrooms, particularly given that applying open-concept floor plans or minimalist interior design opens up space.
Frameless shower enclosures and doors reportedly penetrated the overall market a couple decades ago. Because they didn't have metal or rubber framing, it made them more visually appealing. Frameless designs then gained popularity as they displayed creative tiles in shower units and made maintenance much easier, but gained real traction over the last five years.
Steve says without metal frames, there are fewer areas for dirt, grime and soap scum to accumulate in frameless showers. "Their smooth surfaces are easy to wipe clean, saving homeowners time and effort in their bathroom cleaning routines."
Uninterrupted lines and simple textures on frameless glass shower enclosures also bring a bathroom up to speed in terms of contemporary home décor styles. "Many people believe an upgraded shower experience can boost a home's resale value and appeal due to the addition of a frameless glass shower," Steve adds.
Steve says he noted: “While matte black or brushed bronze finishes may fade in and out of style, glass shower doors have long been a popular design choice. And the technology behind the glass itself continues to evolve."
In fact, Steve says they now can provide low-iron glass, which eliminates the green haze look. He adds that people with white and gray bathrooms really appreciate this crystal-clear touch.
The glass doors are manufactured with ShowerGuard glass, a brand that has a permanent surface layer that prevents corrosion and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. Steve says unlike standard shower glass, ShowerGuard glass has a permanent protective layer bonded to the surface when it’s made so residue can’t penetrate and cause discoloration.
“The technology behind the glass continues to improve, and the materials we use are water-clear and stain-resistant,” Steve shares. “Whether we’re upgrading an existing space by adding a new door, working alongside a builder to elevate a new home, or helping a homeowner with a major renovation, our team stays up-todate on the latest in shower door design and technology.”
Regarding wine rooms or wine-inspired spaces, Steve says they've converted various niches into wine palaces. "We've taken out walls to replace them with glass so the humidity could be controlled and the room can be kept cool. We've also adapted big hallways or places under stairs for storing wine," he shares.
"When quality matters, clients seek the timeless beauty and functionality of glass-related improvement projects we can provide to their homes or offices."
“Make style choices that will stand the test of time, as well as add timeless elegance to your space with a sturdy, easy to clean frameless glass shower,” suggests Steve Hood, owner, Shower Doors of Texas.
Additional beveled or specialty glass projects have entailed sectioning off rooms in houses to create more sound-proof home offices that don’t feel so confining.
The extended Hood family served as experts in shower door design and glass installation industry for nearly 25 years. What began as a family business founded by Steve’s father in Michigan was then continued for the second generation by Steve and his brother in Texas, starting in 2002.
“Integrity, ethical business values and community support are important to us. We offer military veteran discounts, and we’re sponsoring Frisco Family Services as well as Folds Of Honor [a foundation and nonprofit organization that helps provide educational scholarships to the families of fallen and disabled service members and first responders],” Steve shares.
After an initial consultation and estimate, the Shower Doors of Texas team members help finalize the design, order materials and complete an installation. Complimentary quotes can be requested from the Shower Doors team and their showroom is located in Frisco at 10400 Frisco St., Ste. 201. 972.779.0990
My top priority will always be my family, followed by my commitment to helping others build a better life through the employment opportunities available at DFW Roofing Pro.
When individuals seek to hire a reputable roofing contractor, they may find themselves feeling overwhelmed. So many options available add pressure to the decision-making process. The significance of entrusting one's home to a professional intensifies the need to select a trustworthy provider. Since its establishment in McKinney in 2016, DFW Roofing Pro has been assisting North Texas residents with their roofing projects.
CEO Blake Luby’s journey into opening DFW Roofing Pro began after the devastating 2016 hailstorm in Wylie, Texas. Working alongside a friend who owned a roofing company, Blake says he learned the ins and outs of the trade. Fast forward to 2024, and that very friend now serves as the general manager of DFW Roofing Pro. The company boasts a workforce of close to 100 employees, including regular subcontractors, sales professionals, managers and administrative staff.
“My top priority will always be my family, followed by my commitment to helping others build a better life through the employment opportunities available at DFW Roofing Pro,” shares Blake.
The company's clientele spans homeowners, property management firms, real estate developers and commercial property owners. Offering a comprehensive suite of roofing services, Blake says DFW Roofing Pro prides itself on delivering high-quality solutions tailored to each client's needs.
From installation and repair to maintenance and replacement, Blake says DFW Roofing Pro's team of seasoned professionals is equipped with the skills and expertise to handle projects of any scale. "Using top-notch materials and cutting-edge techniques, we ensure durability, longevity and, most importantly, peace of mind for our clients."
DFW Roofing Pro's installation services prioritize client collaboration to tailor solutions to their unique requirements, explains Blake. Their repair services tackle various roof issues such as leaks, missing shingles and damaged flashing. In cases where repair is not feasible, the company offers roof replacement services for a fresh start. With a focus on efficiency and minimal disruption, their team ensures a smooth process for both the property and its occupants.
“Our goal is to provide reliable and high-quality roofing services that meet the needs of our clients and ensure the safety and protection of their property,” states Blake.
The process at DFW Roofing Pro is seamless from start to finish, Blake says. It begins with an initial contact, where a knowledgeable representative gathers information about the project. From there, an appointment is scheduled for an on-site assessment, during which the team inspects the property and discusses specific requirements with the client.
Once the project scope is approved and a contract is signed, DFW Roofing Pro handles everything from liaising with insurance companies to scheduling and preparing for the job. The roofing installation itself is carried out with precision and efficiency, culminating in a final inspection and cleanup to ensure customer satisfaction.
Blake attributes DFW Roofing Pro's success to their unwavering commitment to quality, professionalism and customer satisfaction. He believes experience and reputation sets DFW Roofing Pro apart from the competition in the roofing industry.
“We've been in the roofing business for several years and have extensive experience in working on a wide range of roofing projects. We've built a strong reputation for delivering excellent roofing services and exceptional

customer service,” says Blake. “Our clients consistently provide positive feedback and recommend us to others, which speaks volumes about the quality of our work. Over 300 five-star reviews don’t lie!”
What are the indicators that suggest a new roof may be necessary? According to Blake, the age of the roof is a key factor, with most roofs having a lifespan of 20-30 years. Signs such as missing or damaged shingles, water damage or leaks, and a sagging or uneven roofline also can point toward the need for a replacement. Additionally, the presence of granules in gutters, higher energy bills due to poor insulation, light entering the attic, and algae or moss growth on the roof can all signal potential issues that may require attention.
Blake states DFW Roofing Pro is dedicated to providing first-rate service and high-quality workmanship for all of its customers.
“We have a team of skilled and experienced roofers who are committed to ensuring every project is completed with the utmost care and attention to detail. Customer satisfaction is our top priority, and we work hard to exceed our customers’ expectations on every job,” says Blake. “Whether you need a roof repair, replacement, or maintenance services, you can trust our team to deliver exceptional results.”

DFWRoofingPro.comTHE GUITAR SANCTUARY: WHERE PASSION MEETS EXCELLENCE
In McKinney’s Adriatica Village, The Guitar Sanctuary showcases the enduring bond between musicians and their instruments. Since its inception in 2010, the staff of this haven for guitar enthusiasts has been on a mission to redefine the traditional music store experience. From its humble beginnings next to Cavalli’s Pizza to its current location, The Guitar Sanctuary evolved into more than just a retail space; it’s a community hub where music lovers come together to celebrate their shared passion.
With a keen eye for craftsmanship and a dedication to quality, The Guitar Sanctuary curates a selection of instruments that exemplify excellence. Brian Meader, sales manager at The Guitar Sanctuary, says McKinney Mayor George Fuller envisioned a place that pushed against the tide of mass-produced instruments found in typical music stores. Instead, The Guitar Sanctuary exclusively collaborates with builders and firms who share their unwavering commitment to the art of guitar making.
“Our goal is to find people who build the best of the best,” says Brian. “We’re not interested in mass-produced guitars.”
Indeed, the Guitar Sanctuary isn’t the typical guitar shop. Brian states Mayor Fuller designed the store in a way that a custom living room would look. It has leather couches and a big TV. There are short stools all around, inviting customers to sit and try out instruments on the wall. The space boasts Old-World European architecture with a modern, sophisticated style.
“We present the instruments like an art museum would present an art piece,” says Brian. “All guitars are facing you. We do not look like a typical retail store.”
Brian has 25 years of experience in the music retail industry. He began his journey in 1989 at Abbey Music, going from teaching and repair to sales. In 1992, he says he transitioned to Chuck Levin’s Washington Music Center before joining The Guitar Sanctuary in 2011. At The Guitar Sanctuary, Brian oversees all aspects of the retail store, including product sales, order management, website operations and in-store sales. Additionally, he assists in booking music acts at The Sanctuary Music and Events Center.
Brian notes that many clientele consists of individuals from various industries who share a passion for music and want instruments to inspire their playing. “Our customer base includes both collectors and players, ranging from professional musicians who gig regularly to hobbyists, such as those who perform at church or local events, as well as enthusiasts who view guitars as artistic pieces. While many customers are local to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, The Guitar Sanctuary also serves a substantial online clientele across the country,” he adds.
“We’ve become a destination point,” says Brian. “Many people come to Dallas and when here make it a pilgrimage to come and see the store in person.”
The Guitar Sanctuary is a gathering place for musicians of all levels. With its Performance Academy offering private lessons in guitar, vocals, piano, bass and ukulele, the sanctuary caters to beginners and seasoned
musicians alike. Managed by Shane Frame, the Performance Academy is committed to providing students with not just musical instruction, but also mentorship and a sense of community.
Shane, a Texan native, says he developed a passion for music from a young age, inspired by his grandfather’s musical talents. With supportive parents, he began exploring music at just 9 years old. Throughout his teenage years, Shane performed in church, expanding his skills as a multi-instrumentalist. Over the next two decades, he says he pursued a diverse career in the music industry, spanning various roles in Nashville, including performing, teaching, retail and management.
Shane has been with The Guitar Sanctuary since 2011 and his main role is to build a student base and help mentor the 15 instructors at the Performance Academy. Shane works to ensure each student, regardless of age, and their families, feel the Performance Academy is their sanctuary. He says, “The Performance Academy plays a large role in helping give teenagers positive role models and mentors while helping build confidence and a sense of purpose.”
Shane identifies potential instructors among his current students, leveraging his student base to cultivate his instructor roster. He aims to foster a culture at The Guitar Sanctuary that
nurtures and develops instructors internally. Several of the instructors at the Performance Academy have been with the institution for at least five years, which he believes is a key element in maintaining the quality of instruction.
Also located inside The Guitar Sanctuary is The Love Life Market. This women’s clothing, accessories and gift shop includes a wide range of items, handpicked by McKinney’s First Lady Maylee Thomas-Fuller. Purchases made in the store help support the Love Life Foundation in its mission to spread love and compassion to at-risk women and children in the community.
The Guitar Sanctuary is deeply ingrained in the fabric of McKinney’s community. Brian says the store serves as a destination point for musicians and enthusiasts alike, drawing visitors from far and wide to experience its unique atmosphere firsthand.
“In today’s age of online shopping and faceless corporations, places like The Guitar Sanctuary are more important than ever,” states Brian. “We’re not just selling guitars; we’re selling an experience.”
Whether one is a seasoned pro or a curious beginner, visitors to The Guitar Sanctuary step into a world where passion and excellence are at the forefront, a world where music truly comes alive.

LUXURY MEETS LEISURE ON THE GOLF COURSE IN LEGACY HILLS
ARTICLE BY SHARLA DAVENPORT | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF CENTURION AMERICAN DEVELOPMENT GROUPLuxury generally refers to experiences or lifestyles that are considered high-quality, elegant, and often associated with comfort, refinement, and class. Nothing aligns better with this definition than 1876 Country Club, located in the heart of the Legacy Hills development in Celina, Texas.
While North Texas has no shortage of places to play golf, none will personify luxury more than this oneof-a-kind, upscale country club. In addition to an exceptional golfing experience, the club will also offer tennis, swimming, fine dining and exclusive social events.
Centurion American Development Group engaged native Texan and renowned golf course designer, Lee Singletary, to design the 18-hole course. It will be next to the Little Elm Creek and its tributaries, with beautiful trees like Live Oak and Cedar Elm throughout the grounds. It will consist of a driving range, practice facility and short-game area. The Championship tees will play 7,337 yards and include five sets of tees for each hole, allowing for an assortment of handicaps. The course grasses are made of TifEagle Bermuda and TiffTuff Bermuda on the tees, fairways, and roughs.
Following the opening of the golf course, a lavish, full-service clubhouse facility with a state-of-the-art exercise area, men’s and women’s locker rooms plus saunas, a group fitness gym and private member rooms will be developed. Both fine and casual dining opportunities will be available at the property to suit all occasions.
While 1876 is tentatively scheduled to open in November 2024, now is the time to obtain Founding Memberships. A very limited number of highly sought memberships are currently available to individuals and businesses. Benefits include preferred access to tee times, partial rebates of initiation fees and private events. Presently only golf memberships are available, but eventually, the club will offer tennis and social club memberships. Sandy Lewis, Director CONTINUED >
of Sales, Operations and Membership, states the memberships have been in high demand and will sell quickly. “We’ve already had amazing interest,” notes Lewis. “Since Centurion American broke ground on the Legacy Hills development in April 2022, we’ve had inquiries from people enthusiastic about the potential for this beautiful golf facility.”
Centurion American designed the deluxe country club to celebrate Celina’s history while maintaining a sophisticated, modern resort ambiance. Named after the year Celina was founded,”1876 will offer the area a truly unique and special place to gather unlike any place in North Texas,” said Mehrdad Moayedi, CEO of Centurion American. “It will be the central hub for the Legacy Hills development.”
Legacy Hills is located near the intersection of Legacy Drive and Celina Parkway, near the future extension of Dallas North Tollway. The development has an array of onsite amenities including walking trails, numerous amenity centers, potential Celina ISD schools, plus a first responder station. Mehrdad Moayedi states, “Legacy Hills offers something for everyone seeking the experience of living in Celina.” Also noteworthy, a sports park comprised of 27 acres of land donated to the City of Celina from Centurion American is planned which will pass through the center of the development and the 1876 Country Club.
If you are interested in a Founding Membership, contact Sandy Lewis at sandy@1876countryclub.com or 214-458-5501 for more information about this fabulous opportunity.

HEALTH CO. CHIROPRACTIC: ADVANCED TECHNIQUES AND PERSONALIZED CARE
ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBSDr. Drew Kirkpatrick’s journey into the world of chiropractic care was deeply influenced by his upbringing, where health was approached reactively rather than proactively. He says witnessing the decline of a loved one due to neglecting proactive health measures fueled him to make a difference and shift the paradigm toward focusing on proactive self-care.
With a personal mission to empower individuals and communities to take control of their health, Dr. Drew ultimately established Health Co. Chiropractic in McKinney.
Health Co. Chiropractic embodies a commitment to empowering individuals and communities to take control of their health. With a focus on neurologically based adjustments and personalized care, Dr. Drew says this clinic not only seeks to alleviate pain but also strives to optimize nervous system function and promote overall well-being.
“I started on this journey with a deep-seated determination to make a difference, to empower individuals to take control of their health, and to inspire a cultural shift toward prioritizing proactive self-care,” says Dr. Drew, founder and chiropractor at Health Co. Chiropractic. “It’s not just a profession to me; it’s a calling—a commitment to ensuring that others don’t have to suffer the same consequences of neglecting their well-being.”
The clinic’s team recognizes the integral connection between the spine and the nervous system. By restoring proper alignment, these adjustments optimize communication between the brain and the body, promoting overall health and well-being. Chiropractic care at Health Co. is non-invasive and tailored to each individual’s unique needs, Dr. Drew assures. The clinic offers personalized treatment plans aimed at addressing the root causes of pain or dysfunction, empowering patients to take an active role in their health.
Beyond just relieving pain, Dr. Drew says chiropractic care at Health Co. aims to optimize nervous system function and promote overall wellness. “By addressing minor misalignments before they escalate, patients can potentially avoid more serious health concerns in the future,” he says.
Dr. Drew says what sets Health Co. Chiropractic apart is the staff’s commitment to compassionate care and personalized attention. He and his team prioritize creating a welcoming environment where patients feel heard, respected and cared for.
“Patients are not just appointments,” states Dr. Drew. “They are valued members of the community.”
Dr. Drew stresses that Health Co. Chiropractic is not a franchise; it’s a deeply personal endeavor born out of a desire to make a difference. As someone who has experienced the suffering of a loved one firsthand, he says he understands the challenges individuals face when it comes to health. “But I also believe in the resilience of the human body and the power of proactive wellness.”
Inspired by the tight-knit community values of his hometown, Uvalde, Dr. Drew says he chose McKinney for its similar spirit of support and connection.
“We were drawn to McKinney for its striking resemblance to the community spirit we cherished in Uvalde,” explains Dr. Drew. “Like my hometown, McKinney embodies the values of community, connection and support. It’s a place where neighbors look out for one another, lending a helping hand whenever needed.”
Through Health Co. Chiropractic, Dr. Drew says he hopes to inspire others to reclaim their vitality. “No matter how daunting the health challenges may seem, there is hope, and we’re dedicated to helping individuals and families live their best lives through proactive wellness,” he adds.

The bluegrass state of Kentucky with the Appalachian Mountains is indisputably known as the Mecca of bourbon and the location of America’s only Bourbon Trail.
The Kentucky Bourbon Trail, established in 1999, is dotted with a total of 37 distilleries scattered throughout the regions of Louisville, Western Kentucky, Bardstown, Lexington and North Kentucky.
For bourbon aficionados and road trip lovers alike, the trail promises scenic country drives, historic architecture, and an abundance of restaurants and tasting rooms with some distilleries spanning more than 100 miles apart.
The most popular bourbon distillery locations one might expect to see along the trail are: Angles Envy, Maker’s Mark, Michter’s, Wild Turkey, Heaven Hill, Lux Row, Old Forester, Four Roses, Evan Williams, Bulleit, and Jim Beam.
Within each distillery and on its grounds, bourbon lovers can expect to find a variety of bourbon price points, flavor profiles, distilling and aging techniques, and historical points of interest. Each location offers a variety of tour options: some focusing on the chemistry of bourbon distillation, the art of tasting, the barrel charring process, or the rich (and checkered) history of bourbon’s origins.
One constant seems to remain—most Kentucky distilleries cannot broach the topic of their favorite drink without also offering a glimpse of its history. The name “bourbon” hails from the original Bourbon County, which was a region carved from a portion of the Fayette County of Virginia in 1785. The county, which belonged to the then-brand-new state of Kentucky, was named in honor of the French House of Bourbon to show gratitude to King Louis XVI for his vital assistance during the American Revolutionary War.
Prior to its exodus from the region, loads of white oak barrels cut from the forests of Arkansas were first branded with the Bourbon County label. The county logo branded on the barrels soon gave way to its shorthand references: Bourbon. The rest is, quit literally, history.
The oldest operational distillery in Kentucky is Maker’s Mark, which began distilling in 1805 and has since been recognized as a National Historic Landmark. In 1964, a Congressional Resolution declared bourbon to be an indigenous product of the United States. This distinction renders bourbon as the official American Spirit. To be recognized as a bourbon, a spirit must meet specific and strict requirements set forth by law. In fact, bourbon distillation marks one of America’s very first examples of a consumer protection law with the establishment of the “Bottled-in-Bond” Act in 1897 (The Bottled-in-Bond designation have bourbon standards which supersede those of single-malt Scotch).
All bourbon starts as what distillers refer to as White Lightning—an uncolored, unaged, and unflavored whiskey. During the distillation process, the liquid must not supersede a proof of 160, and must not supersede a proof of 125 at the time it’s poured into barrels to begin the aging process. All bourbon must be aged in new, charred, white oak barrels for a minimum of two years before it is finally bottled at 80 proof or higher. No other dyes or flavors may be introduced into the distilling or aging process if a bourbon is to retain its namesake.
Even though 95% of bourbon is distilled in Kentucky, bourbon does not need to be distilled in the state to be considered authentic. Most bourbon was historically made in Kentucky due to its geography. The rich source of limestone in Kentucky earth acts as a natural aquifer, purifying the water and removing the more peaty flavors one would find in spirits distilled with earthier water quality, such as Scotch. The varied temperatures, humidity levels, and weather patterns in the Kentucky region cause the white oak barrels to contrast and swell. This unique aging process gives bourbon its signature amber hue as well as its sweet and dynamic flavor.
While the tour itinerary is flexible enough to have many starting points, the official “start” of the trail can be found at the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center located at the Frazier Museum on Historic Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville. The destinations along the trail can be planned a number of ways: by distillery, by region, or by organized tour itinerary. Some distillery locations are packed as tightly as an 8-mile radius, with the average tour lasting about 90 minutes.
For those who want to travel off the beaten path, several famous distilleries in the area do not appear on the official Kentucky Bourbon Trail list. One of the more famous of these is the Buffalo Trace Distillery, responsible for distilling bourbon of that name as well as the more rare and sought-after bottles of Blanton’s and E.H. Taylor. The Buffalo Trace distillery is located on a national landmark and offers free tastings, as well as Ghost tours for those who are interested in a different kind of spirit.
