LIFESTYLE LETTER

August - Kids & Pets Issue This issue holds a special place in my heart. Children are more than just the future—they are the heartbeat of our communities today. Their laughter, their curiosity, and their potential shape the world in ways we can’t fully measure. As parents and caregivers, we put so much effort into nurturing their growth, teaching them, and investing in their futures. But let’s not forget that children also shape us—they bring joy, laughter, and meaning to our everyday lives. But we also cannot overlook the powerful role pets play in our families. They offer unconditional love and teach us valuable lessons in empathy, responsibility, and companionship. The bond between kids and their pets can be transformative, fostering deep emotional connections that last a lifetime. At the core of both children and pets is a simple truth—they need us. Our care and attention shape who they become, and in turn, they shape us. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the kids and pets who fill our homes with joy and love. I hope this month’s issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life. They are the ones who remind us of the simple joys and the importance of unconditional love. Here’s to our future, our little ones, and the pets who make everything better. Cheers! OPENING Doors for Collin COUNTY’S FUTURE Leaders Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County Empowers Youth Through Mentorship, Education, Opportunity, and Support ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS As Collin County continues to grow at a remarkable pace, ensuring that every child has access to opportunity remains one of the community’s greatest responsibilities. For Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County (BGCCC), that mission is at the heart of everything they do. Founded on the belief that every young person deserves the chance to succeed, BGCCC provides a safe, supportive environment where children and teens can learn, grow, and discover their potential. Through after-school programs, summer activities, academic support, mentorship, healthy meals, and enrichment opportunities, the organization helps young people build confidence and develop the skills they need for the future. “At Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County, our mission is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens,” says Shawn Wills, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County. “More than anything, we strive to ensure every child feels seen, supported and empowered to pursue a bright future.” While Collin County is often viewed as a thriving and prosperous region, many local families face challenges that are not always visible. Rising living expenses, food insecurity, limited access to affordable childcare, and increasing mental health concerns can create significant barriers for children and their families. Shawn explains that BGCCC works to address these challenges by providing affordable programs, nutritious meals and snacks, academic assistance, mentorship, and activities that support social and emotional well-being. “We believe every child deserves access to opportunities that help them thrive, regardless of their circumstances,” she says. The young people served by BGCCC come from a wide variety of backgrounds, but they share one important characteristic: potential. Through daily interactions, caring mentors, and meaningful programs, the organization helps youth recognize their strengths and imagine possibilities for their future.

Whether a student is improving academically, developing leadership skills, exploring career interests, or preparing for college, BGCCC provides resources and encouragement along the way. One of the organization’s guiding beliefs is that exposure creates opportunity. Shawn says some of the most powerful moments occur when young people are introduced to experiences they may never have otherwise encountered. Each summer, BGCCC offers college tours that take teens to universities, historically Black colleges and universities, community colleges, and trade schools. Participants can connect with students, advisors, and professionals while learning about educational and career pathways available to them. “Through mentorship, field trips and workforce readiness programs, we witness transformative CONTINUED > AUGUST 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . Shawn believes organizations like BGCCC play a vital role in providing stability, mentorship, and support during critical years of development. “We believe investing in young people today strengthens our entire community for generations to come,” she says. Community involvement remains essential to the organization’s success. Volunteers, mentors, donors, businesses, and community leaders all contribute to creating opportunities for Club members. Whether through financial support, sponsorships, employee volunteer programs, or mentorship, every contribution helps make a lasting difference. Looking ahead, BGCCC is focused on expanding both its reach and impact throughout Collin County. The organization continues to strengthen programs centered on academic success, leadership development, workforce readiness, and emotional well-being. “What excites us most is the opportunity to serve even more young people and help shape the next generation of leaders, innovators and changemakers in our community,” says Shawn. By 2030, the organization hopes to reach 30,000 youth across Collin County. At its core, Boys & Girls Clubs of Collin County remains committed to a simple but powerful belief. Every child deserves the opportunity to succeed. With continued community support, the organization is helping ensure that more young people have the tools, encouragement, and opportunities they need to build great futures right here at home. As the school year begins, students often find themselves pulled in many directions at once. Between full class schedules, homework, sports practices, club meetings, part-time jobs, volunteer commitments, family responsibilities, and social activities, it can quickly become difficult to manage everything well. While extracurricular activities are an important part of a student’s growth—helping build confidence, leadership, teamwork, discipline, and friendships—academic success still requires intentional planning, consistent effort, and healthy time management. “Everyone tends to be overscheduled these days,” says Stephanie Talley, Owner and Director of Academics Plus. “The demands on our time are much louder than they once were.” With so many commitments competing for attention, Talley encourages families to be thoughtful about how students spend their time. She emphasizes the importance of protecting both learning time and downtime, allowing students the opportunity to stay focused without feeling constantly overwhelmed.

Students and teachers enjoyed the annual Favorite Teacher Reception, where students honored their favorite teachers with heartfelt framed essays celebrating their impact in the classroom.

“LEARNING DESERVES A PLACE ON THE calendar JUST LIKE SPORTS, MUSIC LESSONS, AND SOCIAL EVENTS. WHEN academics BECOME PART OF A FAMILY’S ROUTINE, STUDENTS GAIN confidence, INDEPENDENCE, AND LONG-TERM success,” SAYS STEPHANIE TALLEY, OWNER/DIRECTOR. Stephanie Talley with Academics Plus MEF scholarship recipient, Sophia Blatt

Talley also recommends that families regularly evaluate priorities throughout the school year. As schedules change and responsibilities increase, it is important to ask whether each activity still supports the student’s overall well-being and goals. Academic time should be scheduled with the same importance as sports practices, music lessons, rehearsals, games, or club meetings. When studying becomes part of the routine rather than something squeezed in at the last minute, students are more likely to feel prepared, confident, and in control. Strong study habits are one of the most effective ways students can create balance. Spending even a few minutes each day reviewing notes, organizing assignments, preparing for upcoming tests, or asking questions about difficult material can make a significant difference over time. This steady approach helps students retain information, avoid stressful cramming, and build the confidence needed to participate fully in class. Small, consistent efforts often lead to stronger academic results and less anxiety. Academic support can also play an important role in helping students manage busy schedules. When families make tutoring, enrichment, or guided study time part of a student’s weekly rhythm, it provides structure and accountability. Students gain tools to work more efficiently, understand challenging concepts, and develop problem-solving skills that extend beyond a single subject. Parents also gain peace of mind knowing their child has support in place before struggles become overwhelming. For 35 years, Academics Plus has helped students balance academic growth with the demands of extracurricular activities. Their approach supports students in staying on track while also helping them avoid burnout. Through meaningful and rigorous learning experiences, Academics Plus encourages students to question, problem-solve, persist, and grow in confidence. By helping students build strong academic foundations and healthy learning habits, Academics Plus equips them to thrive both inside and outside the classroom. 175 Ridge Rd Ste 700, McKinney 972.548.8788 AcademicsPlus.com

B U IL DING C ON F IDE NC E T H R OUGH MARTIAL ARTS KUNG FU ACADEMY OF NORTH TEXAS TEACHES VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS

ARTICLE BY ALEXIS JACOBS PHOTOGRAPHY BY MALLORY GILBERT

As a new school year approaches, many parents are looking for ways to help their children build confidence, improve focus, and navigate life’s challenges. At Kung Fu Academy of North Texas, martial arts training goes beyond self-defense, helping students develop skills that support personal growth both on and off the mat. At the heart of the academy are co-owners and husband-and-wife team Sifu Cory Gilbert and Mallory Gilbert. Together, they have built a family-focused martial arts school dedicated to helping students develop confidence, discipline, and character. While Cory leads instruction on the training floor,

Mallory oversees operations, student experience, and community engagement, helping create the welcoming atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the academy. Sifu Cory’s 25-year Kung Fu journey began in college and grew into a lifelong passion. After earning multiple black belts and teaching under respected masters, he brought his vision of disciplined, high-quality instruction to North Texas. His background in endurance sports and wellness helps shape the academy’s focus on strength, mobility, resilience, and personal growth. “Today’s children and teens are growing up in a world filled with distractions, constant screen time, social pressures, and increasing levels of anxiety,” says Sifu Cory. “Martial arts provide a structured environment where students are challenged, encouraged, and held accountable.” As parents themselves, Cory and Mallory understand the challenges families face when balancing school, activities, and personal development. They intentionally designed the academy to be a place where students can grow in confidence and character while families feel connected and supported. Through regular training, students develop focus, discipline, perseverance, respect, and confidence, all skills that carry into the classroom and everyday life. While many families enroll for self-defense, Mallory says they are often most impressed by the personal growth they see in their children. “Self-defense is sometimes what brings families through our doors, but the personal growth is what keeps them coming back,” she says. “Many parents notice improvements in confidence, focus, listening skills, self-control, and perseverance.” The academy teaches that confidence is earned through effort. As students master new skills and advance through belt promotions, they build confidence through achievement.

“We believe confidence is earned, not given,” says Sifu Cory. “Students gain confidence by accomplishing things they once thought were difficult.” Goal setting is a key part of training. Through the belt system, students learn to break big goals into achievable steps while building patience and persistence. Beyond weekly classes, students can participate in tournaments, demonstrations, leadership programs, camps, seminars, and community events that build leadership skills, friendships, and teamwork. Respect and character development remain at the core of every class, with students learning accountability, humility, integrity, and kindness along the way. For families considering martial arts for the first time, Sifu Cory wants them to know that experience and athletic ability are not prerequisites. “Our focus is on growth, not perfection,” he says. “Our classes are welcoming, family-friendly, and designed to meet students where they are.” Looking ahead, the academy plans to expand leadership programs, self-defense education, community events, and special training opportunities. For Sifu Cory, the greatest reward is seeing students realize their potential and grow into confident leaders. 500 N Custer Rd Ste 110, McKinney 972.746.9980 KungFuTx.com

UNPLUG & HAVE FUN! ARTICLE BY PAM REID PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

Summertime is the best time for kids to disconnect and enjoy being outdoors.

Long, long ago, in a time before technology, children entertained themselves and played endlessly with nothing more than ... wait for it ... their imagination. They played outdoors for hours with friends, balls, jump ropes, buckets, chalk, bicycles, you name it! The level of creativity saw no limits in the minds of these children. While some families have plans for getaway vacations, there are those planning to stay home and scrambling for things their children can do. We’d like to share some ideas that don’t include technology or cost a boatload of money for that matter. The benefits of spending time outdoors and unplugged outweigh complaints about temperature or those annoying creepy crawlers. The added bonus is that many outdoor games secretly teach life skills. Technology is used only to confirm game rules. Ready or not, it’s time to play! A day - or two or three - full of outdoor games will invoke a trip down memory lane for some adults, or a “this is great” thought for others. In either case, playing these games has tremendous benefits - young people can fully embrace human connection, get a break from the instant gratification associated with technical devices and social media, and enjoy some good wholesome, age-appropriate fun. Many adults admit they played many of their favorite childhood games well into their teen years, and still others say they relish in a good game of dodgeball or tug of war today. This list is not all-inclusive, but it certainly gets the games started!

CHILDHOOD GAMES TUG OF WAR - contest between two teams at opposite ends of a rope; each team trying to drag the other across a center line. SACK RACE - stand in your sack, hold on to the top of your sack and hop as fast as you can to the finish line!

FREEZE TAG - each player freezes when tagged and can be unfrozen only by a player who is not yet frozen. Game ends when all players are frozen. RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT - shout “green light” and all players run towards you, shout “yellow light” and they are allowed to walk, but when “red light” is shouted, they must stop and freeze. If player moves at “red light”, they go back to start line.

MUSICAL CHAIRS - walk to music around a group of chairs containing one chair fewer than number of players, and rush to sit down when music stops. The player left standing in each round is eliminated.

KICK THE CAN - find players in their hiding spots and put them in “jail”. Once a player is “jailed” the only way to be freed is for another player to beat the “IT” person to the can and kick it.

DODGEBALL - team sport in which players on two teams try to throw balls and hit opponents, while avoid being hit themselves. Consider water balloons instead of balls on a hot day. There are more great outdoor games. Get unplugged and get outside!

CINNA MON MONKEY BR EA D IS A FUN DESSERT FOR CHILDR EN TO M A KE A ND SHA R E!

AR O UN D 26

C ULIN A RY C R E AT ION S | F OOD + BE VE RAGE

INGREDIENTS

There is little more satisfying to your sweet tooth than ooey-gooey cinnamon rolls. Here is an easy and fun way to make this tearable, shareable treat!

• 1/2 cup melted butter • 1/3 cup granulated sugar • 1/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon • 3 (12 oz.) cans of buttermilk biscuits

COOKING INSTRUCTIONS

CINNAMON MONKEY BREAD

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Generously coat the inside of a bundt pan with cooking spray or butter. Melt the butter in a pot or bowl. Mix the sugars and cinnamon in a separate bowl. Open one can of biscuits, separate, and cut each into four sections. Next, roll each quarter into a ball and then put each one into the sugar mixture to coat. Place the balls in the bundt pan in a single layer and drizzle a little melted butter evenly over the top. Repeat with the other two cans of biscuits. Sprinkle the remaining sugar mixture over the top and bake for 30-35 minutes. Be sure to let cool for a minute or two before turning the bread onto a plate and carefully removing the pan. If you leave the monkey bread in the pan much longer, it will stick and be hard to remove. I sometimes make icing by adding a few tablespoons of milk to about a 1/2 cup of powdered sugar with a splash of vanilla. Drizzle over the top while warm and enjoy!

Homemade Dog Food Recipe from Amy Tinnin - A Cup Full of Sass

My two pugs are more than pets—they’re part of the family. That’s why I started making their food at home, and it’s been one of the most popular posts on my blog. You may be surprised just how easy this recipe is. I add all the ingredients to my slow-cooker to cook, and my dogs love it. If you decide to try this recipe for your pet, please consult your veterinarian. Every dog has different needs based on age, weight, and any health issues. You can even share this recipe with your vet to see if any changes are needed. The ingredients are flexible and can be easily swapped to substitute the turkey for chicken or beef, and even try different dog-safe vegetables. Making dog food at home isn’t hard—it just takes a little planning, and my dogs love it.

Slow Cooker Homemade Dog Food Ingredients: • 3 lbs ground turkey (85% lean) • 1¼ cups frozen sweet potatoes • 1½ cups frozen peas and carrots • 1 cup frozen spinach • 1½ cups uncooked brown or white rice • 4 cups water Directions: 1. Add all ingredients to a slow cooker. 2. Break up the ground turkey and mix all the ingredients. 3. Cover and cook on High for 3–4 hours or Low for 6 hours, stirring occasionally. Note: My dog food was ready in 3½ hours on High. Let cool completely before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freeze for later use.

THE ART OF THE UPSCALE The secret to an elevated PB&J isn’t complicated—it’s all about premium ingredients and creative combinations. Swap that white bread for artisanal sourdough, brioche, or even croissants. Trade processed jelly for fresh fruit compotes, gourmet preserves, or actual fresh berries that burst with flavor. Quality nut butters make all the difference. Think creamy almond butter, rich cashew spread, or that perfectly salted natural peanut butter from the farmer’s market. These simple swaps instantly elevate your sandwich from ordinary to extraordinary.

COMBOS TO Try: CREATIVE COMBINATIONS THAT HIT DIFFERENT The Sophisticated Sweet: Nutella, sliced strawberries, and a drizzle of honey on brioche bread The Panini Perfection: Peanut butter, fresh blueberries, and marshmallow cream pressed between sourdough slices The Beautiful Mess: Your favorite nut butter topped with sliced fresh peaches, kiwi, or berries, then drizzled with golden honey or sprinkled with toasted coconut on thickcut bread The Grown-Up Classic: Almond butter, fig jam, and thinly sliced pears on multigrain bread The Breakfast Crossover: Cashew butter, sliced bananas, and a sprinkle of granola on cinnamon raisin bread The Tropical Twist: Coconut butter, mango preserves, and toasted coconut flakes on Hawaiian sweet bread The Chocolate Dream: Dark chocolate almond butter, raspberry preserves, and fresh mint leaves on whole wheat The Savory Surprise: Natural peanut butter, grape jelly, and a thin layer of cream cheese with everything bagel seasoning

PRO TIPS FOR LUNCHBOX SUCCESS Toast your bread lightly for extra texture, even if you’re making it ahead. Create a barrier with your spread to prevent soggy sandwiches—apply nut butter to both sides, then add your sweet elements in the middle. Pack fresh elements separately and assemble just before eating when possible. Cut into fun shapes with cookie cutters, wrap in parchment paper tied with twine, or pack in a bento box with complementary sides like apple slices, fancy crackers, or dark chocolate squares.

THE BOTTOM LINE An elevated PB&J proves that sometimes the best meals come from taking something familiar and making it special. These upgraded versions will have everyone asking for the recipe—and maybe even offering to trade lunches.

TREY & KATIE

KENNEDY

ON MARRIAGE, KIDS, AND THE COMEDY OF REAL LIFE

38

I NSP IR E D BY | L I FE + C ULT U RE

Trey Kennedy makes a living finding comedy in regular life. Marriage. Toddlers. Yoga pants. The Thursday-night scramble between school dropoffs, soccer practice, and whatever has to be done by morning. Twelve years in, it shows: millions of followers across every platform, three stand-up specials, a sold-out Relatable Tour, and a style of humor fans send each other captioned, “Are you watching me?” He delivers the kind of comedy that travels because everyone’s living some version of it. Katie, his wife of six years, is a former biomedical engineer who also built a modeling career. She’s now raising their kids and co-hosting Correct Opinions alongside Trey — the show where the two of them swap takes on marriage, parenting, and whatever came up that week. Trey has been at this longer than people realize. An Edmond, Oklahoma kid who grew up playing basketball described himself as a “shy kid who never thought he’d be an entertainer.” He started making videos while attending Oklahoma State University. After building millions of followers on Vine before the platform shut down, he gave himself six months on Instagram and Facebook to see whether he could rebuild from zero. He did. Stand-up soon followed. His first special, Are You For Real?, streams on YouTube; the second, Grow Up, on Amazon Prime; the third, built around the Relatable Tour, wrapped earlier this year. “I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now,” he says. A slow climb, made one bit at a time.

“I’ve been trying to be funny every week for like twelve years now.” Most of what Trey writes lately starts in his own kitchen. Thomas is three and a half, and he is, in his father’s words, “a movie.” He narrates his own life from the moment his eyes open and mispronounces words in ways his parents now repeat to each other because no one else would believe them. His younger sister, Eva, is what Katie calls “the calm one.” With a third now in the mix, the Kennedys are officially outnumbered. After six years of marriage, Trey and Katie have learned that the partnership runs best when it gets its own time on the calendar. So once a week, they leave the kids with a sitter and go out for coffee. “You need a system,” Katie says. “It’s about taking time to look each other in the eye. Not the kids. Not the cameras. Just each other.” The same instinct shapes the work. Most of Trey’s trial and error happens onstage or on Instagram, but the first read is always Katie’s. “There’s only been one time ever I’ve had to be like, ‘you’re not doing that,’” she says. The rest of the time, she just laughs first.

F E AT U R I N G T R E Y & K AT I E K E N N E DY Trey and Katie talk about marriage, parenting, and the moments that don’t make the Instagram feed.
