Elvis’ French Toast ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTIE CONNELL

Elvis's favorite!

McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle | July 2019

SERVED AT LOCAL YOCAL BBQ & GRILL

THIS ELVIS FRENCH TOAST RECIPE HAS ALL THE INGREDIENTS LOVED BY THE KING OF ROCK N’ ROLL— PEANUT BUTTER, BANANA AND BACON—AND YES, IT GETS EVEN MORE DECADENT WHEN YOU TOP IT ALL OFF WITH A LITTLE POWDERED SUGAR, MAPLE SYRUP AND MAYBE A LITTLE WHIPPED CREAM, JUST TO MAKE SURE THIS BRUNCH DISH IS JUST AS OVERTHE-TOP AS ELVIS HIMSELF.

you’ll need + 4 eggs + 2 cups milk or half-and-half + 1 teaspoon vanilla extract + 1/2 cup peanut butter (creamy) + 1/2 cup cream cheese, softened + 1 cup heavy cream, whipped to stiff peaks + Slices of Texas toast + 3-4 bananas + 1 stick butter + 2 cups brown sugar + 2 ounces honey + 1 ounce rum + 1 ounce banana liquor

BATTER: Blend milk, eggs and extract and reserve until ready to cook. PEANUT BUTTER MOUSSE: Mix together softened cream cheese and peanut butter until uniformly mixed. Fold whipped cream into peanut butter mixture in 3 parts. Reserve in fridge. BANANAS “FOSTER” SAUCE: In medium saucepan, melt butter and add brown sugar and honey. Allow to fully dissolve and add liquor(s). Allow to cook for 2 minutes then remove from heat. Add sliced bananas and allow to slightly cool before use. Dip thick-cut Texas toast into batter and cook on a flat skillet or griddle over medium heat for approximately 3 minutes per side. Allow the batter enough time to fully cook then reserve until ready to serve. Add peanut butter mousse on top of 1 slice then add another slice on top. Cut in half then cover with bananas “Foster” sauce. Enjoy! Bacon and syrup optional.

A BEAUTY IN OUR MIDST

FarmHouse Fresh

McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle | July 2019

WHO THEY ARE You would never guess the farmhouse on a hill with pasture surrounding it is the creative headquarters for one of the most successful companies to come out of McKinney, but it is. FarmHouse Fresh (FHF) has become the favorite line of body care products in the industry. Their tagline, "deliciously grown skincare," has developed from the company’s first two passions. Freshly grown on their farm or other local U.S. farms (98% Texas products), ingredients are harvested, washed and extracted within hours to ensure vitamins are at their peak. And they ensure zero waste—feeding the chickens the pulpy leftover rinds! Their farm-to-table treatments are as delicious as they are authentically crafted with organic fruits, vegetables and herbs and small batch liquors from across the U.S. The third passion is helping care for forgotten, neglected, and abused farm animals at their FHF Ranch and Sanctuary. They also fund, transport and actively support other rescues. Following their creed—“Life is Short. Save Something Furry.”—they use part of the proceeds from your purchases to help care for these unfortunate creatures.

scrubs, perfumes, candles and more. Their products are the favorites in upscale hotels, spas and the resort industry and are distributed in the U.S., Mexico and the Middle East. They continuously collect awards from consumer magazines and have made Oprah’s “O-List” twice. FHF works with the aestheticians to develop personalized programs. Their products are known for having an aroma that makes their products smell more like food than skin care. As Oprah said about the initial heel treatment, “Here's a trio of foot scrubs that smell so good, I want to serve them over berries!" So, this woman-owned-business with two patents and lots of trademarks has indeed brought beauty into our midst and shares it across the globe. Very well done, FarmHouse Fresh, very well done indeed. If MDR sounds like something you would be interested in helping, you may do so in various ways. First, you can donate. As you can tell from their activities and required equipment, their efforts require significant funding. What could be a little donation on your part could add up to a lot for the team. Second, you may volunteer if you are at least 18 years old. And, if you have always thought you might want to help but didn’t know how or were afraid of getting in the way, don’t worry. All volunteers go through training that includes two hours of online training and prepares volunteers to be deployment ready when the next call comes. There is also advanced training for those who want to have task-specific training. Finally, you can become a sponsor. If you own a company and want to get involved, you can join their current list of sponsors who help significantly.

“FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE IS FOR ANYONE WITH A CHRONIC DISEASE—WHETHER DIABETES, FIBROMYALGIA, ASTHMA/ ALLERGIES, RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS, CHRONIC FATIGUE OR OTHER. FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE’S GOAL IS TO IDENTIFY THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE ILLNESS AND ADDRESS IT RATHER THAN JUST TREATING SYMPTOMS.” July 2019 | McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle

wheels for a deserving warrior FIRST SERVICE AUTOMOTIVE—WHEELS FOR WARRIORS GIVE THE KEYS

RICHARD “DOC” ESSIG JR. HAS PROVEN TO BE A TRUE SERVANT LEADER AND WAS SELECTED TO RECEIVE A WONDERFUL SURPRISE BECAUSE OF HIS DEDICATION TO HELPING WOUNDED VETERANS IN AN ACTIVE BATTLEFIELD AND SERVING HIS COUNTRY. Service First Automotive, which created Wheels for Warriors to recognize the sacrifice veterans have made for our freedom and to help those that have fallen on difficult times, provided the gift of transportation to Richard May 9 at their facility. “We’re proud to support Wheels for Warriors, a charity that helps us say thanks to those who protected our freedom, by giving them the freedom of reliable transportation,” says Nathan Pruski, Service First Automotive co-founder.

Richard "Doc" Essig Jr.

First Service Automotive—Wheels for Warriors 2830 VIRGINIA PARKWAY, MCKINNEY WHAT THEY DID It was a windy, cloudy day, but that didn't dampen the spirits of those who honored this warrior, including McKinney's Mayor, George Fuller. With help from Service First teammates, local high school students and their customer family, First Service Automotive—Wheels to Warriors plans to annually donate a vehicle to a very deserving veteran. While in the U.S. Army, Richard served as a health care specialist in the Afghanistan War and received several awards and medals including the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with the campaign star, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal and Combat Medical Badge. However, since returning home, this North Texan has landed on difficult times while adjusting to civilian life. He attends PTSD classes to help process the emotional trauma of combat, but he didn't have reliable transportation to sustain steady employment. These are a few of the reasons why the Service First Automotive—Wheels for Warriors Selection Committee believe he is deserving of the gift of transportation that will help him advance his career forward. WHO THEY ARE Service First Automotive Centers, a Caliber Collision Company, was founded to enrich the lives of others and change the image of the automotive repair industry. Service First is built on educating consumers by building trust through transparency and respecting its customers’ time and their choices. July 2019 | McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle

ADULT- AND KID-FRIENDLY NATURAL BUG REPELLENTS FROM A BEAUTIFUL MESS

A D U LT (AGE 15 AND OVER) WHAT YOU NEED: + 10 drops lemon essential oil + 10 drops lemongrass essential oil + 8 drops lavender essential oil + 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil + 1 ½ ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle) + ½ ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

WHAT YOU DO: In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine. *The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alcohol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.

While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).
