Smiles and photo by Dr Jensen

DR DOUGLAS JENSEN

You may have known

already that Dr Douglas Jensen is an orthodontist who has been practicing in the McKinney and Prosper areas for the last decade. But who knew that he is actually a dual specialist in not only orthodontics, but in the closely related field of prosthodontics as well? If you weren’t aware, prosthodontics is the high level understanding of the various dental problems (such as missing teeth), advanced treatment planning, and the carrying out of the plan with uncommon skill and craftsmanship. People seek prosthodontists when esthetic stakes are high or when you would just prefer to get it done right the first time. This blending provides for a skill set virtually unheard of among dental professionals.

3595 S. Custer Road, Suite 200 McKinney, Texas 75070

(214) 842-8106 JensenOrthodonticArts.com

Of course, he strives diligently to provide what should be given in a modern practice:

• Well trained team • Latest technology • On time appointments • Flexible payment plans • Comfortable office and humor throughout the day • He’s a super nice guy who can relate well with people But where the rubber really meets the road about you or your child’s teeth and all things smile—that is, expert care performed at the highest level—there is quite literally not a more highly trained and experienced craftsman in this area of dentistry than Dr Jensen. And not only that huge deal, but he is quite inclined to listen to your concerns and work hard toward a first class outcome. Do your Google research, then come treat yourself to a true craftsman and determine for yourself why so many patients refer their friends and why many dentists themselves come to Dr Jensen to get their own teeth fixed right.

ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES, STAFF WRITER

IF YOU ARE ONE OF THE MANY NEW RESIDENTS

PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTIE CONNELL,

TO PROSPER, YOUR MAYOR IS RAY SMITH, WHO

AZURE PHOTOGRAPHY

SAYS THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO MANAGE IS, OF COURSE, THE RAPID GROWTH OF

C R E AT I V E

PROSPER. He grins and says “it’s hard to stop!” The Mayor doesn’t really want it to stop, he just wants it to be manageable. One can only imagine the costs of the infrastructure that is required to accommodate such rapid growth. Just as for us citizens, Prosper

M AY O R . . .

does not have a “money tree”. Therefore, the main way to pay for the city’s needs is through public/private partnerships with our State, County and Development Community. Prosper’s primary core values are Quality Growth, Fiscal Responsibility and Safety. The good news is that the town’s quality construction growth

S E R VA N T

has generated additional tax value allowing the Town Council to improve safety and other services while maintaining the same tax rate for 10 years. One of the main goals Mayor Smith has is to bring in commercial development as quickly as possible to

LEADER

balance personal and commercial taxes much more equitably. Understandably, the current ratio of homes to businesses is quite tilted. However, there is some significant progress being made, which is obvious as you pass by the 380 and Preston intersection. But it may take a few years to be able to create a much fairer balance. This is, and will be, no easy job for some time. Luckily, Mayor Smith brings his experience from time spent in economic development roles in Frisco as it grew rapidly. Who is this “servant leader”? The fact that the Mayor takes time to send a personally signed welcome letter (no electronic signatures allowed) to each new business and resident says a lot. His pride in Prosper is apparent as he speaks about wanting to keep many of the historical sites, including such things as the grain towers and the windmill logo. As a younger man, Ray Smith was a member of the 1980 Baylor football team that won the Southwest Conference Championship. He graduated from Baylor in 1981 and has been married to his lovely wife, Lena, for 28 years. They have three adult sons and are currently raising two grandsons, 10 and 12, in what he calls his “second family”. The Mayor says he relaxes by going to bed to watch the news between 9:00 and 9:30, but never finishes the show before falling asleep. He arises at 4:15 – 4:30, reads his Bible and heads to the gym so that he can exercise to maintain fitness as well as reduce stress. CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT

(CON TI N U ED)

Mayor Ray Smith with Prosper Fire Marshall Bryan Ausenbaugh

(Mayor of a rapidly growing city…Market President of a bank…parent to two pre-teen grandsons… what stress???) This very fit Mayor also wants to promote a healthy lifestyle for the community and spearheaded a “threepeat” by helping lead Prosper as a three-time winner in the ITS TIME TEXAS Community Challenge in the Small Community category. This award is given to communities that take actions to become more fit as individuals. Mayor Smith reports that one of his most important jobs is to be a role model for kids. “These kids are our future leaders”, he proclaims. He proudly displays pictures of him alongside schoolkids in the classroom after he has provided information about their government. He then chuckles about some of the questions they ask. He believes that a healthy sense of humor is required to handle just about any situation. And this writer can attest to the fact that he “doesn’t have too much starch in his shorts” and prefers to keep it that way. When asked what the hardest thing was about being mayor, he spoke of the difficulty of keeping up with the growth while facing the challenges of funds and debt. He hates change orders, which typically means something has gone over budget since he proclaims himself as a “tight-wad” who tries to strategically manage the city’s money. The Mayor says he most enjoys how the position enhances the opportunity to meet people and develop relationships. “Being creative” to assure projects proceed on budget is a challenge from which he gets great satisfaction. He interjects that he is proud of how Collin County has been a very good partner when it comes to infrastructure and development. He proudly describes how he served on the committee that determined how the city was to be managed. His attention then focuses on how the new Town Hall is coming together and all the issues that have arisen as the surrounding area attempts to match the beauty of the structure. A “servant leader”, by definition, is one who shares power, puts the needs of others first, and helps people develop as highly as possible. Prosper is very fortunate to have a mayor who takes that approach in Mayor Ray Smith.

Great…Greater… Greatest Triple G Group ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTIE CONNELL, AZURE PHOTOGRAPHY

IT CAN BE ARGUED AS TO WHICH THE “GREAT” AND “GREATER” REFERS TO WHEN IT COMES TO TRIPLE G’S FOOD PROVIDED THROUGH THEIR CATERING SERVICE OR THEIR FABRICATED PRODUCTS. However, there is no dispute as to the “greatest” referring to the Triple G Relief program. While these adjectives are not really behind the company’s name, Prosper is extremely lucky to be able to claim such an awesome group. In meeting Seth Ringley, you immediately recognize this guy has heart. His passion for all that Triple G comes across strongly. He handles the catering business and the relief fund, while his brother, Corbin, runs the fabrication business.  Beginning with their outstanding catering program, they can handle any size of crowd with everything from delicious, pecan smoked BBQ to huge crawfish boils.  Once you see their huge Triple G Catering vehicle, or any of the other means which delivers the great food, you know you are not dealing with just another catering company.  Pride in their products exudes through the aromas coming out of their smokers and kitchens. Describing Corbin as a “perfectionist”, Seth shows equal pride in their fabrication portion of the business.  They can expertly build any size smoker, pit, or grill for either residential or commercial needs. (They built Hutchins BBQ’s outdoor kitchen.) But they don’t stop at building BBQ products. Visit their website, www.triplegsmokers.com,   to see what all they can build for your cooking, hunting, or decorative needs. Seth and Corbin

Finally, you come to the Triple G Relief Fund. Imagine your area has been hit by a natural disaster that puts people out of their homes.  Look around, as you will probably see this huge green RV type vehicle soon drive up in the area and begin pouring out some of the best smells your nose has ever sensed.  Imagine the blessing this group has brought you and your family in a time of true need. In just the past few years, Triple G Relief Fund has been able to enlist 475 volunteers, been on 12 deployments (from Moore, OK to Houston, TX), and served >210,000 plates to the people in those areas. Seth speaks proudly of the fact that over 93% of the donations are used for the food.  Please visit www.triplegrelief.org to see what upcoming events they may be holding to raise money, or you can volunteer or donate directly. Great job, all around, Triple G!

Did you know? Did you know that when you add a room to your home, the investment plus appreciation is returned to you upon the eventual selling of your home? By remodeling instead of moving, you won’t spend the ten to thirty thousand dollars in brokerage fees to relocate. This is HUGE when you’ve outgrown your home, yet love your neighbors, neighborhood, or your school district. You can rely on DYC to analyze the remodeling investment of your project and to help you spend wisely!

Working with David has been one of the most pleasant experiences we’ve ever had. I was very pleased when his workers were always on the job and there were no hidden costs. David was very responsive and always got back to me right away.

Dr. Jensen, wife Cherie and daughter Liberty

20

McKinney & Prosper Lifestyle | July 2018

MEET DR. JENSEN ARTICLE TOM BRIDGES PHOTOGRAPHY CHRISTIE CONNELL, AZURE PHOTOGRAPHY

Meet Orthodontist Dr. Douglas Jensen

FOR THOSE OF YOU PONDERING THE NOTION THAT ALL ORTHODONTISTS MUST BE PRETTY MUCH THE SAME, YOU WILL BE THANKFUL TO HAVE COME ACROSS THIS. According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), there are about 9,000 orthodontists across the country.  With the  McKinney and Prosper area being touted as one of the fastest growing areas in the US, it is no wonder why so many newly minted orthodontists and even primary care dentists who try their hand at orthodontics have set up right in this area. How do you choose who to go to?  Is it the closest one? New patient specials?  If you are prone to phone a friend to see who they saw, be careful.  No two smiles are alike, and each set of crooked teeth or misaligned bite requires a unique approach for the optimum outcome.  Because your smile is such an important element of who you are, and because how your teeth come together to function has a big impact on your health, well being, and even your sanity (think jaw problems and associated pain), you might consider who you are evaluated and treated by as a question of prime importance.  Fortunately, there is one among the many in this field that will clearly stand out as the obvious choice for you or your family’s orthodontic needs. Dr. Doug Jensen is that aardvark of an   orthodontist whose training and experience far surpasses any orthodontist or primary care dentist in the area.  Very uniquely indeed, Dr. Jensen calls upon his training in the closely related specialty of prosthodontics to create wonderful outcomes for complex or unusual dental problems.  He is so unique, there are fewer dual specialists in both orthodontics and prosthodontics in America and perhaps world wide than there are men who have set foot on the moon!  And—he’s located right here in the McKinney and Prosper area.  The best way to describe what his practice’s advantages are is by defining what the two specialties offer: You probably already know what an orthodontist is—a specialist in tooth movement strategies and dentofacial orthopedics (growth modification).  Prosthodontics is another one of the nine dental specialties that focuses on diagnosing and treating complex dental conditions such as worn or missing teeth, implant-supported dental prosthetics, and high-stakes aesthetically

See JensenOrthodonticArts.com

challenging situations. The combination of the two specialties gives him a depth of knowledge and skill set virtually unheard of in dentistry. The additional good news is that not only is he an outstanding practitioner in both of these areas of training, but he is also simply a great guy! So who is this really nice, dually trained   wizard who has been among us for the last 11 years? You will immediately learn a lot about him as you enter his office and notice the curio cabinet filled with an eclectic mixture of collections, from model planes to animal skulls.

AESTHETIC ARTISAN

(CON TI N U ED)

Dr. Jensen grew up thinking he would become a pilot, just as his father, who served as his most inspirational guide in life. However, his father saw a change in the piloting industry and advised his son to pursue a path in another profession. His father had a great knack for creating and building things, which inspired the future orthodontist to develop a hobby of building model cars and airplanes. He found he loved the challenge of smaller things and learned a lot about his creativity in doing so.  Although now his hobbies include rebuilding fullscale cars, such as his current project, a 1973 Datsun 240Z, which he is currently retro-modifying to go really fast. Dr. Jensen, however, admits that it was his mother who proved to be the driving force behind his learning, like getting him involved in tap dancing and piano.  She taught him to take on a task and see it to the end, such as earning his Eagle Scout award in the scouting program. This aesthetic artisan met his lovely wife of 20 years, Cherie, as he was tinkering with   jet skis at a church lake outing. (He claims she just wanted a ride in the jet ski and thought flirting with him just might get her that ride after he fixed it.)  The doctor describes Cherie and his six-year old daughter, Liberty, as very curious, active and outdoorsy with a great interest in nature and wildlife, such as the purple martins they have recently attracted to their yard and butterflies, for which they carry a net every time they go somewhere new.  You will find a number of their butterfly subjects displayed on his office’s walls. The doctor’s talent is also demonstrated in  his photography.  His own patients are portrayed throughout the office, which come from a complimentary photo shoot with Dr. Jensen himself. Finally, you have to ask him about his singing baritone in the Dallas Millennial Choirs and Orchestras, an organization founded for the purpose of teaching and encouraging excellence in quality sacred and classical music. Go to www.millennial.org to learn more.

THIS THREE-STORY HOME IS A TRANSITIONAL DESIGN FOCUSING ON MUTED COLORS, LIGHT TRANSFER, AND CLEAN LINES. We’ve utilized quartz stone at particular focus points to create depth and a relaxed atmosphere. We like to add original features that cannot be found anywhere else. For example, the iron baluster, showcased in the photo, is custom made by being hand forged for this particular home. The intricate ceiling beam is a DYC signature.
