Three generations of the Mitas family offer a rare opportunity for the DFW area and beyond to experience the beauty and tastes of an actual vineyard. This is the only winery in the area that makes each red wine solely from the grapes raised on the property. Harold and Sue Mitas created this beautiful venue, starting in their backyard in the Squeezepenny neighborhood with a few plants they had been given by a vineyard they had recently visited. They shared a vision. However, that vision was not easily achieved. They had to overcome a number of obstacles, as does any new venture, including the Texas clay soil. But they learned quickly and found that the secret to beating the soil problem was to graft the vines onto a rootstock that was native to the area, thus providing the ability for the fragile grapes to not just survive, but to flourish. The varietals that are grown in the vineyard allow the Mitas Hill wines several options for their customers. Their Tempranillo Reserve is an outstanding “dry, pretty ruby-colored wine with aromas of strawberry, cassis and vanilla over a similar palate of red berries, spice and a hint of tobacco.” They also are able to produce zinfandel, syrah, cabernet, Black Spanish and other specialty wines such as Black Gypsy and Squeezepenny.

If you are not a wine lover yet, Sue acknowledges she was not a fan of wines until she tasted some of the sweet wines that their daughter and winemaker, Lisa, was able to produce. When you think “barbecue,” you think of quite casual—a place you can take the kids, even after practice or a game in their sports attire. When you think “grill,” you think of a more upscale restaurant with great steaks and such. Matt’s new creation has combined the best of both worlds. This “steakologist” brings the great meats from his market so you can walk in and browse through the collection to pick which you want to be cooked for you. Mind you, these are not ordinary steaks. These steaks are always free of hormones, steroids and antibiotics. Grass-fed, premium Wagyu and 100 percent DNA-verified Angus beef, these steaks are the real thing! Chef Adam West proudly discusses how you can come in and enjoy one of their world-class steaks or barbecue in a setting that could be described as modern-industrial ranch. “We want to provide affordable, yet premium products that are a hybrid of an American steakhouse and Southern comfort food,” he says. The decor is warm and welcoming as well as casual yet refined. The building was built in the 1920s, and Matt wants to keep that era relevant in this new venue. The restaurant will be part of a compound that includes an expansive bar, a patio, a retail market and a private dining room to accommodate anything from corporate evenings to rehearsal dinners. To complement his outstanding chef, Matt has hired mixologist Manny Casas. Offerings will range from beers to single-barrel whiskeys, which will often include the entire barrel! Lunches will be handled slightly different, as time is of essence typically for those able to get out. You will order your food at a counter and then be served at your table. Dinner will be handled through outstanding servers. Besides being a restaurant, Local Yocal BBQ & Grill will also offer you the ability to stop in and pick up a great steak or even some prepared offerings to take home and enjoy. Imagine being able to stop by and quickly take home a ready-to-eat half pound of barbecue brisket.

These creations all started when Matt and Heather, who now handles the finances for Local Yocal, left their high-paying positions to start something they hoped would provide a legacy for them to leave their six children. Ranging in age from 2 to 16, their children keep Matt and Heather busy as they run one established business while opening a second. After leaving their previous careers behind, Matt said it took almost 4 1/2 years before they were making an equivalent income. But it seems to have been worth it. The challenges have been many, but being raised on a ranch taught him great work ethic. Matt has also become an excellent auctioneer. When asked how and why he learned that skill, he fondly remembers his days growing up and going to the sale barn for the auctions of farm animals. He was so enamored with the auctioneers that he began to teach himself. Matt confesses he loves doing it and tried to help out charities in the area whenever the demands of his businesses and large family allow.

NESTLED IN THE ADRIATICA VILLAGE IS ZIN ZEN WINE BISTRO. Offering a superior experience for lunch, dinner, Sunday brunch or just an evening out to listen to great music, this cozy little spot will become a favorite. The owners, Randy and Regina Reed, had been fans of Zin Zen and noticed that the bistro was up for sale. Previously, Randy had owned a marketing company and until recently, Regina had been an educator. The story goes that they woke up a month after learning of the sale as owners of this great venue. There are unique little corners and sections from which to choose to sit. Comfort seems to be a major factor for the patrons. From the lounge, also known as the Zen Den, where their son proposed to his lady, to the sofas and chairs near the live music stage, you won’t find a bad seat in the house. The food is outstanding, the bar is stocked with more than 80 different wines, and the service is always with a smile. Randy and Regina say the best thing about owning Zin Zen is getting to interact with the customers, of which many have become good friends. They also appreciate their luck in having the 15 employees that handle their responsibilities so well. Be sure and check out their daily specials, the wine club and the new lockers where you can store your own collection of beverages.
