A TRADITION OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Kemba’s team loves sponsoring the Rubber Duck Regatta to support the Freestore Foodbank in Cincinnati, an organization that provides direct aid to food-insecure families. The Kemba team works together to sell rubber ducks. A few lucky ducks are selected by random and their sponsors win prizes, but the ultimate prize is that the ducks fund meals for families in need in the Cincinnati metro area. Kemba’s support is a big part of why the event raises so much money and generates so much buzz in the area.

“We’ve been sponsors of the Rubber Duck Regatta for 13 years, and we take pride in it,” says Josh.

EDUCATING FOR FINANCIAL SUCCESS The Kemba team has partnered to bring a financial education curriculum called Banzai to students at many local schools, and they’ve even pushed it wider, offering it to employees at different companies in addition to Kemba members. “We sponsor the programs so that the teachers can utilize resources from it when they need materials CONTINUED > FEBR UARY 2 0 2 3 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . to teach students about financial education,” explains Kim Kuchenbuch, director of business development at Kemba. “We’ve taken our financial education program to Edge Teen Center, and we are just beginning to bring Kemba employees in for mentoring and financial education.” Financial education is particularly crucial as students move into their adult lives and make choices like attending college. Late last year Kemba became the official credit union of Miami University athletics and alumni association, and with that effort they employed a personal approach. Kemba CEO Dan Sutton takes time to visit Miami’s campus and share his knowledge from nearly 24 years with the credit union. “I love to speak with the students about good credit, budgeting and fiscal responsibility,” Dan says. Dan shares that Kemba recently worked with some of Miami’s business school capstone students on a project to help the credit union grow its membership. “I try to get out from behind my desk and into the community where my energy is best suited,” he explains.

GOLFING TO GIVE BACK Golf outings are a fun way to spend a day with friends and colleagues while also giving back to the community. Kemba’s 33rd Annual Golf Classic raised more than $71,000 for the Cincinnati Fire Foundation which supports local fire departments where funds are most needed. One example of the foundation’s benevolent acts is providing child car seats to ensure children ride in cars safely. “Another contribution by the Cincinnati Fire Foundation was outfitting an EMS mountain bike unit,” says Kim. “Now during large events in Cincinnati where roads are blocked, they can begin rendering care immediately.” Kemba’s community mindset suffuses everything they do. They recently restructured their Community Outreach Committee to include one person from every branch. This inclusion of branch personnel ensures all Kemba’s communities are represented. This community-focused mindset has led Kemba to win the Ohio Credit Union League’s Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility multiple times. “We want people, small businesses and communities to know they are more than an account to us—they are truly a part of the Kemba family,” says Dan. LovelikeJJ.org | @lovelikejj LovelikeJJ was founded in honor of Jonathan (JJ) Day, a 9-year-old boy from Mason who passed away unexpectedly in his sleep. LovelikeJJ believes the best investment we can make is in our children: to ensure they have all their basic needs fulfilled and the opportunity to succeed. Their goals are to engage the local community and to provide practical support to bring lasting improvements to children’s lives. “We are grateful for the outpouring of support from the Mason community, which made all we have accomplished in the last two years possible,” shares Kristen Day. Countless meals, snacks, clothing items, school supplies and more have been donated. They hosted six service projects this year, bringing families together to take care of others. Their 5k in June had more than 600 participants and $18,000 was donated towards the adaptive ball fields at Makino Park. In August, they had a Day of Play for JJ and supported four school districts with school supplies. They ended the year with the LOVE Ball, where families could enjoy time together during the holiday season while also giving back.

Captive Butterfly Sets Woman Free

When lockdowns hit at the beginning of 2020, Lauren Cavanaugh was the Director of Job and Family Services for Warren County. Already scant resources were in even higher demand, everything was closing and the possibility of a third major brain surgery loomed large. Obligations were piling up and she needed a way to de-stress. Lauren shares, "I finally stopped saying to myself 'I want to write a book one day' and sat down and gave it a try." And she did. With the support of her husband Tim, Lauren left her job of 11 years to finish her novella, Captive Butterfly. Captive Butterfly is the first book published by Lauren, a longtime Mason resident. The novella chronicles the story of two women, Grace and Meg, from their childhood through Grace’s kidnapping in Haiti to her rescue by Meg. It was important for Lauren to tell a story about faith in action. She has a rare condition called Chiari malformation, which is characterized by the brain or cerebrospinal fluid putting excess pressure on the spinal cord. Chiari malformation comes with a variety of symptoms, and she has had two major brain surgeries as a result. Facing the possibility of a third (in addition to the challenges we all face in day-to-day life) Lauren's faith has been vital to her. She wanted that example to be at the forefront of her story. Inspired by true events, Grace and her husband Josh are kidnapped and tortured while on a mission trip to Haiti. Grace in particular relies on her faith to survive the brutal treatment she receives. Leaning on prayer is in fact the only way she makes it through. To make her storytelling realistic, Lauren watched documentaries about actual missionaries who were kidnapped. While she writes about the truth of what

can happen, she made the decision that it was not necessary to make the book gory or too graphic. She describes the trauma without making the story itself traumatic. Amazingly, Captive Butterfly entertains a level of compassion not only for the woman who helps them escape, Nadine, but also for the kidnappers. Nadine explains how the head of the gang became the person he did, describing the poverty he endured, and the desperation to escape the circumstances of his life. The book stops short of absolving him of the atrocities he committed against the couple, but the moment of reflection is refreshing. As Lauren put it, "Everyone has a story." After a moment of wavering, Nadine eventually helps Grace and Josh escape, and then tragically leaves their lives rather quickly. When asked about Nadine's role Lauren says, “There are people who come into your life unexpectedly, and in the moment you may not necessarily realize they are there to help you. I wrote her to symbolize how I see butterflies: they arrive and they’re beautiful and bring us joy. They’re not here for long, but they play a role in our lives." Lauren is currently working on a sequel following her favorite character, Meg. She is Grace's best friend and also her foil. Where Grace is a missionary driven by service, Meg is selfish and not always trustworthy. She is so motivated by her career that she rejects the idea of love and family. However, through the process of rescuing Grace, Meg softens and learns that it is possible to both have a career and allow herself to be loved. Meg has the largest character arc of the novella, and Lauren is curious to explore the tension between the protective part of Meg and the part that she's protecting. CONTINUED >

The process of writing this book itself has had a transformative effect on the author. Lauren reflects, “I pay more attention to everything around me, like when the wind blows, or when I hear leaves. It’s the funniest thing. I carry a little notebook and I make notes when I notice something because I think maybe I can use that somewhere. I’m looking for things for the book, but I’m also noticing things I maybe never would have.” Captive Butterfly mimics (in theme

A moment in which she was in an almost impossible situation allowed her to be open to the tender, day-to-day moments that we can only appreciate fully if we are able to be present with them. Adding Hospitality to Health Care Two Mason residents seek to improve patient care experience with new AFC Urgent Care clinic. ARTICLE BY NEELAM KANA | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNA SHERMAN Kal Patel’s mom always wanted him to be a doctor and while he didn’t follow that path, he will be fulfilling her dream vicariously by opening a new urgent care clinic this winter serving West Chester, Mason and surrounding areas. American Family Care® (AFC), owned by Mason residents Kal Patel and Jed Sherman, is now open in the VOA shopping center adjacent to TJ Maxx. Both Kal and Jed got their start in the hospitality industry, Kal as a builder and manager of hotels in the late 90s and Jed as a manager for Marriott around the same time. Friends for 10 years, they finally joined

entrepreneurial forces and started Crestpoint, a hotel development and management company in 2012. Bootstrapping out of a small hotel in Mason, they grew their business until merging it with a larger hotel company in 2018. Along the way, Kal, a self-admitted accident prone, frequent urgent care user, noticed a wide disconnect between the experience he received and the one he expected when visiting a clinic. The missing patient care component happened to be the most important, the “care.”

Drawing from their extensive track record in hospitality management, Kal and Jed have set out to create the best possible patient care experience. Their goal is to lean on their ability to blend “hospitality” into “health care” and create a clinic that extends compassionate, courteous, and competent attention to patients who can expect to be treated like guests. “The ability to partner with AFC was a no-brainer for us,” Kal shares. “All the hotels we’ve ever owned are franchised, so we’re already familiar with the process and systems.” AFC is the nation’s largest provider of urgent care, accessible primary care, occupational medicine and employer services. With more than 300 clinics and three million patients across the country, the network is massive. Kal continues, “Just based on my personal experience, there is definitely room for service improvements, and we believe together with AFC we can deliver.” The clinic offers a full suite of services, including flu and COVID-19 testing and treatment, employment and school physicals, treatment of sports injuries, x-rays, and more acute services like stitches and wound care. Visiting AFC provides patients with a first option offering convenience, proximity to home, walk-in appointment availability with short wait times and most importantly, avoiding the emergency room. When patients arrive they’ll notice unique features more commonly found in an upscale hotel lobby. “In keeping with the experience factor, we believe that care can begin before you see the doctor,” Kal states. The lobby, with its lighted blue-sky ceiling, fresh

ground coffee/cappuccino maker, bottled water, availability of warm blankets and soft music is meant to soothe the ills of patients immediately upon entering. “Combine those subtle design elements with friendly staff in an inviting atmosphere and you begin to understand what we mean by adding hospitality to health care,” Jed adds. “This is what we deliver every day. We see absolutely no reason why it can’t exist here, and I’ve even questioned why it doesn’t already.” Although it wasn’t intentional, they’ve completed their community connection for AFC West Chester-VOA by bringing on 14-year Mason resident Dr. Shri Rao to serve as medical director. Dr. Rao is also the owner of Ageless Integrated Medicine, a Mason-based functional medicine practice focused on identifying root causes of health-related problems. His medical philosophy fits perfectly with how owners Kal and Jed want to deliver health care. As Dr. Rao says, “While symptoms can and will be treated to help patients improve, the treatment of underlying causes of poor health in the most natural way possible, is far more critical to longevity.” In the end, Kal and Jed simply aim to deliver an experience where every patient who enters the clinic leaves with the feeling that they made the correct healthcare choice. It’s the answer to “why we do it,” and their hope is patients will be more than satisfied with the how.
