So often we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, and we can forget to take a break, relax, and be grateful for what we have. Our homes play a central role in life, from creating treasured childhood memories to showing off our personalities and celebrating family traditions. Our Home issue shares many ways to improve your home so you can focus more time and energy on enjoying it! We spoke with local experts in interior design, organization, and pest control to gain insights and inspiration on trends and tips for every room, including ways to keep unwanted “outdoor guests” out of your home. Our Giving Back feature this month highlights Realize to Act, a local nonprofit created and run by Mason High School student Tanya Keskar. Learn more about how she has helped people in our area and hopes to inspire others to get involved. Be sure to check out the City Scene section for a recap of our Readers’ Choice Awards with photos from the awards ceremony. Congratulations to all of the nominees and this year’s winners! CALL IN THE BUG NERDS Locally-owned, Solutions Plus, offers multi-faceted pest removal and bug-banishing tips for homeowners. ARTICLE BY JONATHAN STOUT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED Mason’s own Solutions Plus Pest Control, co-owned by Jen and Mark Winter, grew from an unexpected bond between customer and service provider. “Mark was in the pest control industry, working for a larger company in the area, and I was a customer service manager for a local hotel. That’s actually how we met,” co-founder Jen explains. Self-proclaimed “bug nerds,” Mark and Jen bonded over their shared interest. Eventually a romance blossomed and the two married. “A fun fact actually, is that instead of flowers on our wedding cake, we had bed bugs made of icing,” Jen describes. The couple saw a need in the local area for pest control services. Having lived in Mason since 2001, they wanted to keep their new business close to home. “Mason is also a great central location for our service area, which ranges from Northern Kentucky up to Dayton and even Columbus,” Jen explains. They started Bed Bug Solutions in 2014. Although the original plan was to focus on bed bug extermination, they discovered that their bed bug customers also had several other general pest control issues. With this realization, they expanded their business to create the Solutions Plus Pest Control division. Today, Solutions Plus offers general pest control, termite, rodent and bed bug treatments and even hoarding cleanouts (with or without bed bugs). “In dealing with bed bugs, we found that some customers needed help with preparing their home for a treatment or they had too much clutter to treat it properly,” Jen tells us. Solutions Plus is the only local company that offers services to help people with bed bug preparation, laundry services and hoarding cleanouts. Cleanouts include deep cleaning and reorganization of the home. No matter what they are removing, Mark and Jen truly relish the work they do. “We enjoy finding solutions and helping our customers sleep better, knowing that they no longer have to worry about pests inside their homes or businesses,” Jen tells us. After a successful start in their Mason home base, Solutions Plus has since expanded into Northern Kentucky, Southeast Indiana and even as far as Montana.

PREVENTION
TIPS:
To make your home less attractive for pests, Solutions Plus recommends keeping all food and drinks in sealed containers or in the refrigerator. Vacuuming and sweeping every few days, laundering bedding once every 7-10 days, and cleaning kitchen counters and appliances are also recommended. Staying on top of often neglected parts of your home like the basement and attic is important, as this is where many pests often gain entry. To lessen the presence of outdoor pests, mowing and raking regularly will reduce space for pests to hide and make it easier to identify issues. Cleaning up brush and leaves from around your home is recommended because yard waste often provides ecosystems for pests to thrive. Keeping the waste close to your home offers the opportunity for these pest communities to move inside. Long tree branches are also known to be “highways’’ for carpenter ants and other pests to travel to your home, so trimming bushes and trees at least 12 inches away is highly recommended. Similarly, keeping gutters clean and free of debris is necessary so as to not cultivate unwanted wildlife.
TELLTALE SIGNS
OF PESTS:
BED BUGS: Common signs of bed bugs include unexplained bites and dark spotting or blood spots on bedding. TERMITES: Winged termites can be spotted swarming from March through May. They often leave discarded wings near window sills or door frames. MICE OR RODENTS: Keep an eye out for droppings, gnawed or frayed electrical cords and openings in food packaging.

FINDING MORE SPACE
Taking shelving up higher and adding plexi-front sliding drawers and slanted can shelves all helped put essentials within easy reach in the pantry.
CLOSETS BY DESIGN HELPS HOMEOWNERS TRANSFORM THEIR SPACES BY OFFERING CUSTOM ORGANIZING SOLUTIONS THAT FIT THEIR LIFESTYLES. Tracy Carter, a sales designer with Closets by Design (CBD), was herself a huge selling point for Chris and Tamara Fladung. Their large family was looking for help with three projects in their Maineville home. “Once we had Tracy out for a consultation, her warm demeanor, attention to detail and great customer service completely sold us— we honestly didn’t pursue quotes from other companies because we knew we wanted to work with Tracy,” shares Tamara.

Closets by Design designers like Tracy work directly with clients to help them get organized and bring their ideas to life. The process starts with a free consultation to discuss their spaces and goals. The designer then puts together a project plan and walks through pricing options. Keeping the pantry stocked with accessible food and snacks was essential for Tamara and Chris to keep their family of eight fed and their household running smoothly. Their new pantry design includes features such as sliding baskets and spice racks, plexiglass drawers and slanted can shelves. There is even a dedicated space for the family’s Roomba, “Rosie”. “The plexi snack drawers are my favorite feature in our pantry—things are clearly visible and within easy reach, ready for the kiddos to grab whenever!” Tamara shares. Beyond finding more functional space for their clothing, shoes, accessories and even linens, Chris and Tamara saw opportunities to make unique use of their his-and-hers walk-in closets. Chris
Organizing and updating the layout of Tamara's closet gave her space for a small desk for daily prayer, sewing and paperwork.
wanted space to store his guitars and amplifier, so Tracy included a tall cabinet storage area dedicated to his hobby. Tamara wanted to iron within her closet so a wall-mounted ironing board that folds down when needed was added. During planning, they realized there was also room to incorporate a small desk area where Tamara could do her Bible study in the mornings. “Tamara was able to look at that walk-in closet with fresh eyes, and she was really excited about using it in a non-traditional way. For some of us moms, the only space we have that’s quiet is our closet. It was self care, and I love that we were able to add that feature for her,” explains Tracy.
TRENDS & POPULAR FE AT URES • Gold, Brass and Black Matte Hardware. Unique hardware is a simple way to update the look of a room, helping design and color choices stand out. • Navy Panels and Shelving. Small spaces are a great place to take a risk and try a bolder look with color, like navy. • Expanded Textures and Colors. CBD is always looking at what’s next, and ways to offer more color and texture selections, like herringbone (coming soon!) • Shaker Drawers and Doors. This classic style is popular for home offices, kitchen pantries, and as an option to dress up walk-in closets. • Expanding the Pantry. Popular accessories, such as cookie sheet dividers, sliding baskets and plexi drawers can organize more than just food to help extend the use of the kitchen. • Non-traditional Uses. Find ways to create more space in your existing home in the garage, mudroom, laundry room and basement. CBD can help clients visualize space for home offices, hobbies, home gyms and more. TIPS FROM TRACY Tracy came to Closets by Design by way of renovating homes in the Cincinnati area. Starting with fixer-uppers helped her learn how to look at a house room-by-room and transform it, bringing in design elements that would allow a new family to enjoy that home into the future. “I love working on projects in so many different homes, and coming alongside people to help them achieve something that makes life better for their family,” Tracy elaborates. “It’s exciting getting to stay on top of the trends going on in home design and organization, and helping people envision the possibilities within a space.” Tracy has a wealth of knowledge, and we were lucky enough to have her share a few tips for homeowners to consider when tackling their organizing projects. • “Oftentimes, people have square footage in their closets and rooms that aren’t really being used. Once we come in and design a new layout, it helps them maximize the space they have.” • “No matter what size closet you have, you probably have room for drawers. This will give you the ability to eliminate a big piece of furniture like a dresser, and free up floor space in the bedroom.” • “The projects we do really create the organizational space you need —through shelves, drawers, cabinets and more. Once we help you get organized, it’s beneficial to have a dedicated time for tidying up that works for your schedule. Whether it’s Saturday morning or a Sunday evening before you start a new week, take 15 minutes to straighten up shelves, hang up clothes, or put away items to keep your space organized and beautiful!”

DESIGNING A DREAM HOME Helen Wright, of Interiors Plus, brings design visions to life in an elegant and versatile family home. ARTICLE BY ALEXANDRA FROST PHOTOGRAPHY BY LEN KALTMAN—WEST CHESTER CORPORATE PHOTOGRAPHY

D E C OR T R E N D S | HOM E + DE S I GN
When Charlene and John Busby began building their dream home in the Carriage Hill neighborhood, they knew just who to call to bring their design visions to life. Longtime friend and interior designer Helen Wright at Interiors Plus in Mason had worked on previous homes for them, and Charlene knew she’d capture her style to a tee. Charlene had some specific asks, from integrating art by her son-in-law, to maintaining a neutral and elegant palette throughout the home. She also wanted to ensure her grandkids would be comfortable in the space when they visited. Helen went to work designing their dream home, and didn’t disappoint. Charlene describes the decor in her previous home as Tuscan and traditional, but in her new home, she wanted a neutral look, which she felt would better suit the larger home with an open floor plan. Her main room features creams, beiges and other light colors that make for a more spacious and clean look. “The neutrals throughout the house made it soft, and we can add whatever colors we want since she likes to add for the seasons,” Helen explains, as she also decorates their home for the holidays.

Interior Designer and owner of Interiors Plus, Helen Wright.
Helen worked to feature Charlene’s son-in-law’s art in high visibility areas so that the family could enjoy those pieces, which add color and vibrancy to the neutral palette. The artwork was inspired by photos from their European travels, which he turned into abstract artwork. Helen also used indoor plants to liven up the space with elegant touches of green. One of Charlene’s most loved elements is the hood above the kitchen stove, flanked by open shelving, where she displays some of her favorite items. Large cream lanterns draw the eye to the kitchen island where she enjoys entertaining family and friends. Helen didn’t forget about the six grandkids, designing a space in the basement especially for them. “They have a special room for them to hook up their games, and we play games during Christmas or whenever they come. We call it the Game Room. It has a poker table and it’s decorated with dominoes and all types of game stuff,” Charlene says. The room could also be used as a fifth bedroom if needed. Helen’s goals in the game room design were to provide ample storage and choose furniture that’s comfortable for the grandkids to enjoy. The porch is another space Charlene utilizes for entertaining, which Helen designed with neutral wicker furniture and a gray and white rug. The television and fireplace make it an enjoyable area during many seasons, with abundant seating for large family visits.

Homeowners Charlene and John Busby.
The master bedroom continues the theme of elegance and luxury, as well as the neutral palette, with a stunning chandelier, artwork above the headboard and a large rug spanning the area. There is also a well-lit sitting area near the windows with floor-to-ceiling curtains that help the couple truly utilize the whole bedroom. Gold and bronze accents level up the decor throughout the home. Helen was careful not to over-decorate. “It is a big house with larger spaces, so you have to be careful not to clutter it up,” she says. Charlene hopes that others will consider working with an interior designer like Helen. “Just talk to her from your heart—tell her what you want, and she will find a way,” Charlene advises.

We often ask ourselves if we can truly make a difference in the world. Tanya Keskar, Mason teen, founder and CEO of the nonprofit Realize to Act, would answer with a resounding yes! Tanya was only 11 years old when she travelled to Nagpur, India and interacted with children living in the slums. Thinking beyond her years she concluded, “Now that I know how others live around the world, I simply must help.” “When I returned home, I realized we’re all consumed in our own lives and problems. We all need to open our eyes and be willing to see and care about others around us. I wanted to spread this realization to others to promote the importance of empathy, so I launched a nonprofit organization called Realize to Act, aimed at spreading awareness of causes through unique and innovative programs,” Tanya reflects. Realize to Act is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, founded with the idea that people working together can make a difference. Tanya explains, “Our organization doesn’t focus on a specific need or cause. Our goal is providing opportunities and getting people involved where they have a passion to help. We run programs that bring people, resources and other nonprofits together and inspire people to act.” In its first five years, Realize to Act has brought people together on projects such as providing backpacks and school supplies to children in need in Dayton, Kentucky, assembling hygiene packets for area homeless shelters and raising funds for organizations serving children in India. Recently, they were awarded a $5,000 grant from Meijer to continue these and other efforts. Currently, Realize to Act is working to identify and connect people and resources to address a variety of needed services for those living in local homeless shelters. Sixteen-year-old Tanya dreams big. Her vision is to reach every corner of the world and she believes with technology that is possible. She hopes to create a digital platform that will engage and connect people all around the world, expanding their knowledge and empathy to make a meaningful difference for themselves and others. Tanya encourages everyone, “It can be daunting to take on a challenge to change the world, but if you are passionate, you can do it. We want to empower you to get started, find a support system and by working together we can make an impact.” For more information please visit: RealizeToAct.com

Daphne Oz: Beautiful Evenings at Home Emmy-winning TV Host & NY Times Bestselling Author Shares her Dinner Hosting Favorites
New York Times bestselling author Daphne Oz talks about her newest book, “Eat Your Heart Out: All-Fun, No-Fuss Food to Celebrate Eating Clean,” which launches in April. We sat down with Daphne Oz to learn more about her journey to home entertainment.
CITY LIFESTYLE: SHARE WITH US YOUR BACKGROUND AND THE INFLUENCE IT HAD ON YOUR JOURNEY TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY. DAPHNE OZ: I was born in Philly, raised in New Jersey, and now
my husband and our four kids and I live in Florida. I spend a few days each week working in NYC taping our new syndicated talk show, The Good Dish, covering everything delicious in daytime.
CL: WHAT ARE YOUR TIPS FOR HOSTING A MEMORABLE DINNER PARTY AT HOME? DO: When I entertain, my general approach is: Abundant
Simplicity. Appetizers are generous piles of a few different things – olives, hunks of parmesan, spiced nuts, torn bread with herby oil to dunk in, sliced Persian cucumbers with a pool of labne or Greek yogurt, olive oil, and flaky salt for dipping. I look for recipes that are simple or that I’ve made 100 times before that are always crowd pleasers and leave me plenty of time to enjoy my company. The whole point of a beautiful evening together is to make sure you, the host, are relaxed and comfortable, because your guests will take their cue from you.
