LIFESTYLE LETTER

Embrace Your Style While style often brings to mind clothing or fashion, it can reflect much more. It's a personal expression that is found in the way we present ourselves, the causes we support and the stories we choose to tell. As we transition into fall, this issue celebrates the many ways people throughout our community share their confidence, creativity and purpose. This month, you'll meet the team behind goGLOW, where customized sunless tanning helps guests achieve a healthy, natural glow while putting skin health first. We also explore the growing importance of personal branding photography. Local photographers share how authentic images can help build confidence and create lasting first impressions for businesses. Making a difference is always in style, and CancerFree KIDS embodies this every day through the remarkable impact they're making by supporting pediatric cancer research. With September recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, their annual 100 Mile Challenge provides an opportunity for our community to come together in support of research that is creating brighter futures for children and families throughout our region. Thank you for spending part of your month with us. We hope these stories encourage you to support local businesses, discover meaningful organizations and embrace your own unique style.

GO THE distance for CHILDHOOD CANCER research CancerFree KIDS offers community support and fundraising for pediatric cancer research. ARTICLE BY JONATHAN STOUT PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

CancerFree KIDS (CFK) was founded in 2002 by Cincinnati native Ellen Flannery after her infant daughter Shayna was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare form of eye cancer. Shayna was able to recover successfully, but Ellen was shocked to find how underdeveloped pediatric cancer research was and how limited the treatment options were. “Helping kids with cancer is a mission people are generally eager to get behind,” CancerFree KIDS Executive Director Jill Brinck remarks. “But most people don’t realize the reality of what it’s like to have a child diagnosed with cancer.” Determined to change the situation, Ellen founded CancerFree KIDS to fill the funding gap for researchers. “For researchers, early-stage funding is virtually impossible, despite the desperate need for new ideas for novel ways to treat pediatric cancer,” Jill explains. “We are the catalyst to help researchers try these new ideas and get proof of concept data so they can apply for further funding.” Their unique funding model awards grants directly to researchers, facilitated through their New Idea Awards and Accelerator Awards. The CancerFree KIDS Scientific Review Council, comprising scientists from the nation's top oncology institutions, reviews the grants and identifies the most promising projects to fund. Both awards help scientists launch research and advance projects that show significant potential. Since 2002, CancerFree KIDS has funded $12.5 million in 265 research grants, resulting in more than $124 million in follow-on grant funding, 26 clinical trials, 66 patents, 376 scientific publications and four startup companies. They are also leading funders of early-stage pediatric cancer research at both Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus.

“We’re fortunate in Ohio to have two of the top pediatric oncology hospitals in the country right in our backyard,” Jill remarks. “Cincinnati is such a special community, one that is really philanthropic and mission focused. We’ve been fortunate to build a strong community of supporters here.” CFK “Champion” families (families they serve who have been impacted by childhood cancer) are at the heart of everything they do. The Champion program brings impacted families together by creating a support group community. CONTINUED >

“One of the best parts of my job is getting to connect with Champion families,” Jill tells us. “We’ve celebrated along with families when their kids ring the bell to finish their cancer treatment. We’ve also walked alongside families grieving their children. We've learned from the children and families that cancer never defines who they are. Every child has their own unique story, interests, talents and dreams.” CancerFree KIDS hosts several exciting annual fundraising events, including the Butterfly Walk at the Cincinnati Zoo, Night for the Fight for high school-age students, the 100 Mile Challenge and more. They also have many families, organizations and businesses that host community events to benefit CancerFree KIDS throughout the year. The 100 Mile Challenge, taking place this month, is a 30-day fitness and fundraising challenge started in 2021 as a virtual campaign for September’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It has since become one of their biggest campaigns of the year. “It’s been a lot of fun to see the growth of the Challenge over the past few years,” Jill shares. “We have corporate teams, community groups, neighborhood teams, families and individuals all getting involved. We make it very accessible so that virtually any activity will count.” The CancerFree KIDS 2026 100 Mile Challenge Champion is 11-year-old Graham, who was diagnosed with B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia when he was just four years old. He's been cancer-free since October 2022. "We hope Graham's story inspires others to support childhood cancer research so kids in the future who face a diagnosis have better, more gentle treatments," Graham's parents, Mike and Morgan Schroth, comment. This year, CFK's goal is to raise $1 million that will directly fund novel, life-saving childhood cancer research grants. Anyone can sign up for the 100 Mile Challenge. To learn more about the 100 Mile Challenge, volunteer and donation opportunities, visit CancerFreeKids.org.

The CancerFree KIDS 100 Mile Challenge September 1-30, 2026 The 100 Mile Challenge is a 30-day fitness and fundraising challenge in honor of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To complete the 100 Mile Challenge, participants sign up to accomplish 100 miles of any activity and raise or donate at least $100. Participants can compete as individuals or create a team with family, friends or community members. Approved activities include: • Running • Biking • Walking • Pickleball • Gardening • Yoga and many more! Registration is $25 for an individual or $75 for a family. It includes a personal fundraising page, t-shirt and access to the 100 Mile Challenge Facebook Group, where participants can plan to meet up to work toward their challenge and fitness goals. As summer fades into fall, many people find themselves missing that fresh, healthy glow that comes naturally after days spent outdoors. Fortunately, keeping that sun-kissed look no longer has to come at the expense of your skin. At goGlow in The District at Deerfield, husband-and-wife team Wayne and Jodi Achterberg are helping guests achieve a natural-looking glow through customized sunless tanning. For the Loveland couple, it's never been about changing someone's appearance–it's about helping people feel like the best version of themselves. Sunless tanning has come a long way from the one-size-fits-all solutions of the past. Today's customized formulas and techniques allow guests to achieve a personalized glow tailored to their skin tone, lifestyle and goals. For Wayne, opening goGlow marked a career change after more than 25 years in healthcare IT. As the father of two daughters involved in dance, he saw firsthand the growing demand for spray tanning and how inconsistent the results could be. "I wanted to transition to something new," Wayne explains. "The opportunity to help people feel better about themselves and be happy was very attractive."

Model Brooke Duke wears a tuxedo mini-dress from the stylist's collection.

Jodi, who has an MBA and a background in project management, was equally inspired by the company's “skin first, tan second” philosophy. "Once I learned the spray solutions and products aren't filled with many of the common chemicals found in other products, I knew I wanted to be part of it," she says. “goGlow offers you a much safer alternative to the sun. You can have a beautiful glow without negative effects.” That commitment to healthier skin is what first drew the couple to goGlow. Rather than relying on an automated spray booth, every guest begins with a personal consultation. Trained technicians evaluate skin tone, undertones, lifestyle and upcoming events before selecting a custom, hand-applied tanning solution designed to create a natural-looking result. For founding member Brooke Duke of Morrow, that personalized approach made all the difference. "I've always had a really light complexion, and no matter what I've tried over the years, I just don't tan naturally," Brooke admits. "I wanted a healthy, natural-looking glow without damaging my skin." CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C OM/MASON A N DD E E R F I E L D

“THE STAFF GENUINELY WANTS YOU TO FEEL CONFIDENT AND LOOK YOUR BEST. THEY TAKE THE TIME TO CUSTOMIZE EVERYTHING INSTEAD OF TREATING YOU LIKE JUST ANOTHER APPOINTMENT.”

Unlike previous experiences with self-tanners and spray booths, she says goGlow delivers a result that actually complements her skin tone. "The staff genuinely wants you to feel confident and look your best," says Brooke. "They take the time to customize everything instead of treating you like just another appointment." That personalized experience begins well before the tanning appointment itself. Proper preparation, including exfoliating, moisturizing and following simple before-and-after care steps, helps create a more even, longer-lasting result.

"We talk with every guest about their skincare routine," Wayne tells us. "Our products are designed to maximize the results while keeping skin healthy." Vegan, sulfate-free and paraben-free, the products reflect goGlow's skin-first philosophy and commitment to helping guests care for their skin beyond the appointment. That approach often surprises first-time guests, many of whom arrive with outdated ideas about spray tanning. "People think they'll turn orange, smell badly or ruin their sheets," Wayne explains. "Not with us. And darker isn't always better. Sometimes people simply want a light, healthy glow." Jodi understands those first-time nerves because she once shared them. "I never had a spray tan before experiencing goGlow," she acknowledges. "Now I realize how much a quality spray tan can balance your skin tone and give you a youthful, healthy glow." Since opening in May, the studio has been busy welcoming guests from across the community. "It's been rewarding to see customers leave with such big smiles after their first experience," Wayne shares. For the Achterbergs, those moments are the reason they love what they do. A customized spray tan is about more than adding color – it’s about creating an experience where guests feel comfortable, confident and cared for. LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS SHARE HOW AUTHENTIC IMAGES CAN HELP BUILD CONFIDENCE, CREDIBILITY AND CONNECTION. ARTICLE BY NINA WEIERMAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY KELLY ANN PHOTOGRAPHY + PHOTOGRAPHY BY JENNA

YOUR BRAND Whether you're building a business, searching for a new job or growing your professional presence, your personal brand often makes a first impression before you do. Kelly Settle of Kelly Ann Photography in Springboro and Jenna Beers of Photography by Jenna in Deerfield Township share their advice for creating authentic branding photos, building confidence in front of the camera and using imagery to tell your story.

WHAT DOES "PERSONAL BRAND" MEAN TO YOU?

A personal brand is an opportunity to convey to your customers who you and your company are. It's the feeling someone gets when interacting with you, your business or your product.

WHY ARE PROFESSIONAL BRANDING PHOTOS MORE IMPORTANT TODAY THAN THEY WERE FIVE OR 10 YEARS AGO?

With the development of AI, people are questioning whether what they see with their own eyes is real or not. A professional photographer will make sure your images are authentic, not overly produced and highlight your personality.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN CHOOSING PHOTOS FOR WEBSITES OR SOCIAL MEDIA?

First and foremost is outdated headshots. You want people to look at your photo and immediately recognize you. A professional photographer can bring out your personality by capturing the twinkle in your eye, your slightly crooked smile or the way you laugh. All of these nuances make up who you are.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO FEELS UNCOMFORTABLE IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA?

It’s my job to make them feel comfortable and coax out that natural smile. I find that sharing images as I photograph them helps people understand how great they look through my lens. It builds confidence and allows them to make adjustments if they want to.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR BUSINESSES TO USE CUSTOM IMAGES INSTEAD OF STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY TO BUILD TRUST?

Authenticity is key. Stock images can be used by anyone who purchases them. Custom imagery helps you stand out! Your people and your processes in your environment are what make you special and set your business apart from your competition. Visual storytelling with images that have a consistent style, feel and color theory is also paramount. CONTINUED >

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT PERSONAL BRANDING AND PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS?

It’s an investment that you can’t afford to skimp on. Quality visuals will attract quality customers. Jenna Beers, Owner of Photography by Jenna PhotographybyJenna.com

WHAT DOES "PERSONAL BRAND" MEAN TO YOU?

It's about how you want to be seen and what you stand for, in business and in life. It should be authentic and reflect who you are or even who you are becoming.

WHY ARE PROFESSIONAL BRANDING PHOTOS MORE IMPORTANT TODAY THAN THEY WERE FIVE OR 10 YEARS AGO?

Today, people meet your business online before they ever meet you in person and in just a few seconds, they're forming an impression. Professional branding photos help make sure that the first impression reflects who you are today. Branding photography creates a consistent look that helps people recognize your business and feel confident about reaching out.

WHAT ARE THE BIGGEST MISTAKES PEOPLE MAKE WHEN CHOOSING PHOTOS FOR WEBSITES OR SOCIAL MEDIA?

Let's start with the obvious one: please retire the car selfie! Beyond that, it’s waiting too long to update your photos. We put so much pressure on ourselves to look "perfect," but that's not what people are looking for. Don't wait until you feel worthy of being photographed. You already are. Photo By: Jenna Beers

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE WHO FEELS SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT HAVING PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS TAKEN?

I always tell people that the idea that humans are born photogenic is a myth. I will pose you, direct you and tell you exactly what to do, especially with your hands, because seriously, what do we do with these things?

WHY IS PREPARATION SO IMPORTANT BEFORE ANYONE STEPS IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA?

I want to make sure clients feel comfortable and look and feel like themselves by creating a collaborative, personalized experience, including helping them with clothing selection and styling.

WHAT DO YOU WISH MORE PEOPLE KNEW ABOUT PERSONAL BRANDING AND PROFESSIONAL PHOTOS?

I wish people would think bigger! Don't think, 'Oh, I just need a few pictures.' Ask yourself, 'How can I show people who I am in my business?’

Stunning and UNIQUE HOMES Find inspiration in these four gorgeous books.

It takes a lot of work to make a house a home. A home reflects your personal style, functions to meet your goals, and provides relief from the outside world. However, unless you are a design professional, you likely need a bit of guidance to turn your thoughts and ideas into reality. One way is to immerse yourself in the advice and visions of award-winning architects and designers. Flip through the gorgeous, glossy, photo-filled pages of these beautiful books and apply their lessons to your own home.

Villa d’Este: L E G EN D O N L A K E CO M O

In 1568 Tolomeo Gallio commissioned a grand villa overlooking Italy’s magnificent Lake Como. After two centuries in the Gallio family, Villa d’Este became home to multiple members of the aristocracy before being transformed into an elegant five-star resort in 1873. After 150 years of catering to an endless array of famous guests wishing to immerse themselves in “la dolce vita,” Villa d’Este stands as an example of blending tradition and modernity to create absolute luxury.

Palm Beach Style:

T H E A RC H I T E C T U R E A N D A DVO C AC Y O F J O H N A N D JA N E VO L K

In the 1920s, American royalty wanted to establish a winter retreat and show off their newfound wealth. Building grand homes inspired by European palaces, they created one of the world’s most famous resort towns. Commissioned to design over 2,000 projects during his sixty years of practice, John Volk’s legacy as one of the “big five” architects of Palm Beach, can now be seen on almost every street.

Learn how to integrate elegant timelessness, celebrate bold colors and eclectic patterns, or embrace the past while living stylishly in the present. Whether you’re building a new home, planning a renovation, or your home is simply a constant work in progress, these four new releases are sure to provide the inspiration you need to transition your house into your dream home—whatever that may look like and wherever that may be. Enjoy!

THE RESIDENTIALARCHITECTURE OF D. STANLEY DIXON

R EI M AG I N I N G A N A M ER I C A N FA R M H O US E

Atlanta-based architect Stan Dixon has received tremendous media attention since the founding of his firm D. Stanley Dixon Architect, Inc. in 2006. His highly-anticipated debut book showcases thirteen projects from across the country. From a relaxed Jupiter Island coastal retreat to an elegant English-manorinspired South Carolina home, each project varies geographically and stylistically, highlighting a variety of different aesthetic components.

The defined style of cozy and simple living has led to a rise in American farmhouse design in recent years. Interior designer Heide Hendricks and architect-builder Rafe Churchill show how they have brought twenty-first-century living to their late nineteenth-century New England farmhouse. This husband-and-wife team combined their talents to create a historic home that is both a personal retreat designed for everyday life and a constant source of inspiration for their other projects.
