SUMMER IS MADE FOR EXPLORATION. Without the busyness of the school year, we have the time to hit the road and discover something new. I remember cramming into the back seat with my siblings as our family traveled to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Of course, there were moments of annoyance and the inevitable invasion of each other’s space, but what I recall most of all was the fun we had singing to the radio, playing car games and mastering Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Game Boy. For many, it’s the destination that makes the trip. But for others, like local dentist Gregory Davis, it is the journey that creates the adventure. North Salem, New York, for the 2018 Great American Mountain Rally Revival. The European-style endurance run would challenge drivers and navigators across three days and 700 miles of New England’s mountain roads. We accepted the invitation. In the end, it was a road trip for the ages. We drove the Hudson from Maineville, Ohio, to North Salem, New York. In just three days, a group of 13 teams became good friends. Everyone was thrilled with their experience and the varied roads selected by the rally-masters. And we drove back home to Maineville with second-place trophies resting on the back seat. The entire road trip registered exactly 2,300 miles on our odometer. It was a uniquely challenging yet satisfying adventure, all taken in from the front seat of a 70-year-old Hudson. Our Hudson somehow transported Lynn and me into the past, present and future all within the confines of the same journey. In short, this road trip was more than just a drive; it was a great gift. Dust off your classic, my friends. Go places! Do things! Smile!

City I dragged my wife, son and daughter to Alexander Hamilton’s home in Harlem and his grave site at Trinity Church. Heck, I have a stuffed Alexander Hamilton doll at the house. This Independence Day I find myself reflecting with new appreciation for the American experiment that was officially declared on July 4, 1776. It was a dream collectively conceived and dared by a homogenous group of white men that has slowly unfolded into a deliciously diverse mix of color, culture, and ethnicity. We have come in fits and starts, with both celebration and warfare to the imperfect land that we today share and know as home. Our American family, just like our nuclear families, has good days and bad. But through them all I count my American experience to be chief among the greatest gifts of my life. I’d like to think that Alexander Hamilton and his contemporaries, given the chance, would look largely with pride and gratitude on the success of their concept, the fruits of their daring, and with ongoing dreams for even better American days yet to come.
