Liberty Center Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting Santa Claus came to town and led the countdown to light the 51-foot Christmas tree at Liberty Center! The fourth annual Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting event had more than 16,000 in attendance. MADE for Authentic Leaders Complete Wings of Mason Mason City Schools and the Mason Deerfield Chamber challenged MADE for Authentic Leaders students to increase foot traffic in the downtown Mason corridor, while also beautifying the space. When the weather was too cold and rainy to have the kids outdoors for the annual Tutu Run, they made a last-minute change to an indoor "danceathon" instead. STUDENT AND SENIOR RECYCLING RESULTS IN NEW BENCH FOR SCHOOL Mason Early Childhood Center second-grade students have partnered with a local senior center, Cottingham Retirement Community, over the last year to save plastic lids. This past summer, more than 400 pounds of saved lids were transported to a specialized recycling center, Green Tree Plastics. Green Tree melted the lids and turned them into a new bench for the MECC second grade playground.

ATHLETES ACROSS THE COUNTRY WHO COMPETE RECREATIONALLY ON THEIR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETIC TEAMS, BUT ONE MASON TEEN IS TURNING HEADS ON THE GLOBAL STAGE. Olivia Sulek is not your typical teenager; she is the fittest 14/15-year-old girl in the world. Olivia earned that accolade, as the first 14-year-old to do so, in the 2018 Global CrossFit Games, beating out more than 1,500 athletes who started in the first stage of the competition.

“I went to the competition the year before and watched the girls compete. I had no faith in myself and thought there was no way I could do it, only to come back one year later and win the whole thing,” Olivia says. “There were definitely ups and downs throughout the whole competition, but the end result was just amazing.”

“Her dedication to being the best and her level of maturity is beyond her years,” Olivia’s mother, Dominika, says.

Olivia’s CrossFit journey began when she was just 11. At the time, she was training as a gymnast and saw CrossFit as an opportunity to enhance her gymnastics. In the end, it was

CrossFit that stole her heart, so about a year and a half ago, she became serious about her training.

“I love the competitiveness of it,” she says. “I was doing gymnastics more for the social aspect, but CrossFit ignited the fire I always had.”

Olivia’s passion and determination help fuel that fire, and her dedication is evident in everything she does. She follows a strict nutrition plan, set by a consultant who determines what carbs, fats and proteins she should eat and when. Her workouts are scheduled around those times. Olivia trains nearly seven days a week, five of which are hard training days where she is in the gym for around four hours.

“I am very fortunate. My parents let me homeschool. I just have to keep my priorities straight, and it’s a con-

“After I graduate, I don’t know what the plan is. I have a great coach right now, and I want to stick with him as long as I can,” Olivia says of her coach, Nic Simpson.

“Without him, her success wouldn’t be possible. They have a very special bond and relationship. It’s a perfect recipe for success,” Dominika adds.

“Becoming a professional athlete would be awesome.

if I can deadlift a lot more than 300 pounds, it’s a lot easier on my body. But if that’s all I can do, I’m more likely to get injured…You could hurt your body, hurt your back, pull a muscle, tear a muscle, pop a joint and a lot of people get injured even in training because it’s not a natural occurrence.”

All firehouses in the City of Mason have workout equipment so their firefighters can exercise (typically an hour a day) while on the job. The health and fitness program provided by Todd helps his employees survive their career physically and to pass their competencies every year.

“Our firefighter agility test is 10 minutes and 30 seconds of continuous movement including lifting, climbing stairs with a weighted vest, dragging a hose, lifting a [rescue mannequin] that weighs 175 pounds…it all mirrors what they do on the fire ground,” Todd says.

According to Todd, a firefighter’s workout regimen should include a warm-up, stretching, flexibility movements (like yoga), cardiovascular fitness (running up and down stairs, rowing machines, ellipticals, etc.) and some sort of strength building activity (like using dumbbells and barbells and anything that mimics the movements they would perform on the fire ground with the weight of their gear).

A typical workout for him involves “usually stretching, warming up my body, then a big lift like deadlifts,” Trent says. “And then I’ll do accessory work, so, something to do with the legs or the back, and then I do a MetCon (metabolic conditioning) which is shorter high-intensity training within a given time frame.”

Another workout day for Trent could be a yoga day, where he says he performs a 30-minute yoga session followed by briskly walking for 30 minutes on a treadmill at an incline while wearing a 50-pound vest.

Todd attributes his physical well-being to his longtime workout routine.

“I’m 58 years old, and I really don’t have any serious health issues, thank goodness,” Todd says. “But I’ve been intentional about being healthy because I want to live a nice long life after the fire service.”

And Todd says that while that’s a big part of his life, it’s also reflective of the healthy culture in Mason.

“All the neighborhoods are built with walking paths, and most have swimming pools for activities and parks,” Todd says. “You can’t go around the city of Mason without seeing people running, walking or biking. It’s just a very health-oriented community, and the city government is also very health-oriented as well, in building not only a culture of excellence and service but building a culture of health and exhibiting that in what we do.”

ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN OPTOMETRIC ASSOCIATION, 61 PERCENT OF THE U.S. POPULATION WEARS GLASSES OR CONTACT LENSES. One out of 4 children in the U.S. has an undiagnosed vision problem signaling a massive issue that is affecting students’ ability to see and learn. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control has identified vision disorders as the single most prevalent disabling condition among children in the United States. OneSight, a locally based organization, is changing those statistics one patient at a time.

Headquartered in Mason, OneSight is an independent nonprofit with the solutions, people and resources to eradicate the vision the 1 in 7 people on our planet who can’t see clearly because they lack access to vision care. Since the organization was founded in 1988, they have impacted more than 10 million people in 49 countries. On average, the organization sees nearly 4,000 patients weekly thanks to charitable programming and the permanent self-sustaining vision centers OneSight has worldwide.

In Ohio, it is estimated that only 1 in 7 kindergartners has an eye exam prior to entering school. Within the Greater Cincinnati area, OneSight’s focus lately has been on providing eye vision care services for children and their families in schools.

OneSight recently opened a new vision center located in Middletown (joining the vision centers located in the Fairfield City School District, Hamilton City School District, Oyler School and Academy of World Languages in Cincinnati). The addition of another local vision center will not only help to combat those numbers, but together these eight vision centers will serve more than 15,000 students annually in the greater Cincinnati area CONTINUED >

by providing comprehensive eye exams, glasses, fittings adjustments, and more. OneSight also conducts vision screenings annually at local schools. All of these services provide a “health hub” where children don’t have to leave or miss school for vision care.

For one local family, this service relieved a tremendous amount of stress regarding time and money.

“It’s an amazing thing,” says Tabby Duvelius-Gierhart, mother of Kiera, who attended the one-week charitable clinic in partnership with Xavier in November. The university hosted the Cincinnati clinic that drew 737 patients and prescribed 701 glasses.

Tabby also has 10-month-old twins, restricting some of the time she has to go out and about searching for the right eye services for Kiera.

“Having twin babies, we aren’t able to go out without extra hands and a plan for who is where and who is with whom,” Tabby says. “Kiera getting these glasses has helped us tremendously money- and time-wise. We truly appreciate the helping hand getting her an eye exam and glasses. Without OneSight it would have been so much harder and costly for us.”

As for Kiera, she is excited that Belle from Beauty and the Beast is on her glasses. Her mother says she enjoyed both the experience and the people who helped her. Kiera’s new glasses are not only helping her to see better but are also alleviating her headaches caused by poor vision.

“By the end of this year, we will have eight vision centers across the Greater Cincinnati area providing access to more than 190,000 students and community members,” says Laura Lewis, OneSight’s director of Global Integrated Marketing. “We are committed to making a difference in our own backyard by both helping identify vision issues and by providing access to glasses to children across Cincinnati. We will also continue to provide free vision screenings to more than 20,000 Greater Cincinnati-area students annually.”

Also headquartered in Mason, Luxottica Retail’s trained volunteers are helping OneSight to achieve its goal: to close the vision care gap for good. Given the right resources and the right schedule, OneSight believes it can do so in about 30 years. It currently helps provide permanent vision care access to 20 million people worldwide. Luxottica employees volunteer to help staff OneSight’s charitable and sustainable vision care programs in the Greater Cincinnati area and around the world.

Together with OneSight, Luxottica also offers the opportunity for optometry students to travel as a volunteer team to various locations throughout the world, providing comprehensive eye exams under the supervision of Luxottica Retail-affiliated doctors. From June through December, students can apply for the following year’s trip to the clinic’s global location (later announced). The 2018 OneSight clinics were held in Oaxaca,

Mexico, and brought eye care to more than 7,100 patients over a twoweek period. This opportunity is a partnership between OneSight, Luxottica and the National Optometric Student Association.

By the end of 2018, more than 1,400 charitable clinics will have been held, 131 self-sustaining vision centers will have been opened and 49 countries will have been touched by the incredible work OneSight and its partners are doing to provide vision care needs for people who may not have another option.

Some have seen a slow decline over time. They awake one day with an awareness that they are no longer able to smile freely and laugh loudly without a subtle but genuine inner haunt. Some long ago gave up a comfort they once had in sharing themselves closely and intimately with those they love.

WHY am I a dentist? I’m a dentist because I know of no other role through which I might have better potential to connect with people on a meaningful level in search of wholeness and health. In dental school I was trained to be a rather skilled tooth technician. I could identify disease when it was present and provide a complete list of options available for the restoration of a tooth or tissue to health. In the school of life I’ve learned that there are people behind those mouths, people that often have joys and concerns that go much deeper than the diagnosis of dental caries and periodontal disease.

Life is too short to accommodate factors that get in the way of comfort, health and joy. I’m a dentist because I have the potential with help to erase some of those factors. That is a gift both to me and my community.
