The HERO Club 5K The HERO Club of Mason, founded by two Mason Middle School students, hosted a 5K to raise money and awareness for PPPD (Persistent Postural Perceptual Dizziness), the most common vestibular disorder for people between the ages 30 and 55. IMAGINE BEING A YOUNG WOMAN AND MOVING TO A NEW CITY WITH THE PROMISE OF WORKING IN A SHOP, AS DOMESTIC HELP, OR IN A HOTEL. Instead of getting one of those jobs, you find yourself making unimaginable decisions out of desperation, fear and abandonment from your “future employers.” You likely have no education, no money to return home, and you’re now living as a domestic slave in a city that’s a war zone for many young women. That’s how life is for young women in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. But for some women, that grim cycle has been broken, thanks in part, to women from Mason, Ohio. Sifa Threads is Christian-based ministry that equips young women coming from broken backgrounds with training, artisanal skills and resources, so that upon graduation from the two-year program, the women are equipped to start their own businesses and provide for themselves and their families. The non-profit was started by three American women: Beth Calmes, Stephanie Pelfrey Boon and Shantelle Brutsman. Boon and Brutsman were Mason residents. It’s now managed by national Tanzanian women, alongside the original co-founders, all of whom live with their families in Tanzania. All of the products that the young women learn to make—from sewing and hand-beading to cutting leather and batik dyeing—are sold both in Tanzania and in the U.S., and the program runs entirely off of product sales and donations. Sarah Wagoner manages Sifa’s U.S. sales out of her Mason home. As Director of Sifa U.S., Wagoner spearheads the communication, marketing, training and development of Sifa stateside. She does speaking engagements locally and nationally to share the story of Sifa Threads and to identify ways to build outreach nationally. “All of us who work with Sifa Threads are volunteer-based,” Wagoner explains. “I quit my corporate job and am now raising personal support to focus on this ministry full-time. The products are in my basement, I create the marketing campaigns from my living room, and I conduct meetings and brainstorming sessions at the ORCA Center co-working space in Mason.” Wagoner’s passion and commitment to the non-profit stemmed from her desire to give back. When she moved to Mason almost three years ago from Chicago, she was heavily involved in her career for a consumer-packaged goods company. After attending Grace Baptist Church in Mason, Wagoner learned about Sifa Threads and planned a trip to Tanzania in March 2017. “A 14-day visit to Tanzania piqued my interest in the ministry, and a three-month vision trip at the end of 2017 solidified the role I’d play in this ministry,” Wagoner says.

In her current role, one of Wagoner’s major goals is to spread the word about Sifa Threads and to invite others to get involved. She says one of the biggest ways people in the U.S. can get involved is through Boutique in a Box, which is a large box with over 80 items across the product line that is sent directly to your home. The items range from scarves, pillow cases, leather jewelry and more, most in the $10-$45 price range, and all are hand-crafted by the women in Tanzania who are part of the Sifa Threads program. Once someone receives the box, they can gather friends and family to shop from the box, sell at local craft shows or farmers markets, and then send any remaining items back to Wagoner in the original box. ABOUT THE PRODUCTS Every product that is sold in the Boutique in a Box has been developed with a purpose as part of the Sifa Threads training program. It’s not only beautiful and one of a kind, but it’s made in order to teach a specific skill to the students. Leather craft is a fairly new market for Dar es Salaam. The leather is purchased locally and requires precision and attention to detail. Students who have excelled in this skill are able to make shoes, highend purses and bags, jewelry and other custom orders. Chiffon from Sifa Threads is selected from the small island of Zanzibar, just a ferry ride away from the city. Working with chiffon is not an easy skill to develop, but it allows students to create a wide range of viable, specialized women’s couture. Batik is a method of producing colored designs on textiles by dyeing them, and it makes its way across many of the Sifa Threads products. Students also learn how to apply wax designs, which add beautiful detail to fabric. Batik is a very popular style worn by men and women in Tanzania. Students who have an eye for design typically enjoy designing new ways of dyeing, developing patterns and learning how colors work together to make products. Pillows can be created by beginner students and those who are nearly graduating. What looks like a simple pillow is used to develop skills such as hand-stitching, cutting, using a pattern, proportions in design, zipper placement and more. Clothing is an important aspect of developing a student’s ability to measure correctly and fit clothing to their client’s figure. Because of this, most of the clothing is sold within the Sifa Threads shop in Dar es Salaam rather than stateside. Rather than using a pattern, students are taught to listen intently to their client, look at a picture brought in, or make their own drawings to develop each piece. They also learn from Babu, who is a local man who comes every morning to teach design to second-year students. 18

ABOUT THE PROGRAM Young women are recommended by their pastors, families, former teachers, or people in their community, to interview for a position in Sifa Threads. The Sifa Threads staff and leadership conduct interviews and the students are chosen based on a number of credentials and the severity of their situation. There is no cost for the program, and the students are given a weekly allowance to provide for their basic living and transportation needs. To date, 40 women have gone through the Sifa Threads program. During their first year in the program, students learn basic skills which are missed in government schools such as using scissors, tracing, reading, and for some, simple math skills. They learn basic hand-sewing, batik dyeing, screen printing, beadwork, and more. The students also attend daily Bible study and discipleship and participate in a rotating cleaning and cooking schedule. Later in their first year, the women enroll in a professional sewing college, which is paid for by their own sales and donations. Students in their second year of the Sifa Threads program dive into leadership development, take English courses and small business training, develop a personal business plan and apply for a business loan. They also take a professional clothing design course, a self-defense course, and further their development through their Bible studies and discipleship within their community. It’s clear the women going through this program are well-equipped for life when they graduate, and Wagoner says that’s what drives her every day. “I love when women find their voice and use their talents,” Wagoner says. “Sifa equips them to do that. Sometimes I sit back in awe and thankfulness at the opportunity to join a team which uses fashion to bring hope to women’s lives.
