Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank provides diapers to low-income families in need.

When local pregnant mom Megan Fischer read a heart-wrenching article about a cloth diaper bank, she discovered that diapers aren’t covered by government assistance. This often results in difficult choices for low-income families.

“Parents have to choose between buying food or diapers,” Fischer explains. “They have to leave their baby in the same diaper for two days or reuse a disposable diaper.”

Armed with this knowledge, Fischer went searching for a local diaper bank in Cincinnati and quickly learned that none existed.

In October 2015, Fischer founded Sweet Cheeks Diaper Bank and by April 2016, they had distributed 3,500 diapers to three partner agencies.

“At the time, I had two toddlers and a full-time job,” Fisher says. “I thought, ‘If we could do 5,000 diapers a month for three to five years, that would be great!’”

Little did she know, the nonprofit would far surpass that benchmark in just six months of operation.

“I knew [Cincinnati] had a crazy-high childhood poverty rate, but I didn’t connect that other agencies would actually be seeking us out,” Fischer explains. “And that’s what has made this so successful. We had a wait list within three months of agencies that wanted diapers from us.”

Located in the St. Anthony Center in Over-the-Rhine, Sweet Cheeks is the only diaper bank serving the Greater Cincinnati area and distributes approximately 60,000 diapers a month to 22 partner agencies. They hope to grow that number to 30 agencies by the end of the year and will soon distribute their millionth diaper.

Sweet Cheeks is also launching a new program at the end of the summer called Cincinnati Alliance for Period Supplies under the national organization Alliance of Period Supplies (founding sponsor U by Kotex ®).

“I realized [managing menstrual health] was a huge issue, and I thought, ‘We need to get that in the schools,’” says Fischer. “There are low-income girls who have to miss school every single month. How do you catch up, let alone get ahead? Starting this program was just a no-brainer.”

LIVING IN GREATER CINCINNATI, IT’S NO SECRET THAT THERE’S A RISE IN THE NUMBER OF MENTAL HEALTH AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES. And yet, most aren’t talking about it.

“Sharing stories and opening up the doors to conversation [about mental health] is really important. Reaching out and asking for care is key,” says Jennifer Pierson, Senior Marketing and Outreach Director of the Lindner Center of HOPE in Mason.

Walk through the doors of the Lindner Center, and you immediately find yourself in a safe, welcoming environment where conversations of mental health, substance abuse and many other illnesses are discussed daily. The Lindner Center is a comprehensive mental health center providing patient-centered, scientifically-advanced care for individuals suffering with mental illness. They provide inpatient, residential and outpatient care, serving patients of all ages.

Ten years ago, learning from friends and colleagues that many people were leaving the Greater Cincinnati area to find adequate mental health treatment, Craig and Frances Lindner set out to create a solution closer to home.

What started out as a vision from the Lindners in 2006, has turned into an internationally recognized facility for mental health care. The lodge-like facility is set on a large, quiet lot off Western Row Road. Trees and wildlife surround the building, welcoming its visitors to leave behind the chaos of busy life beyond the treatment center.

“The Lindners were very influential in the look and feel of the center, bringing the outdoors inside,” Pierson explains. “We have a lot of large windows to let in natural light, which is so important for patients. It’s really meant to feel like a ski lodge. They wanted it in a setting that would be very calming with lots of natural elements.”

Behind the building are walking paths, outdoor seating areas, and large trees for the more than 30,000 patients who have walked through the doors since the Lindner Center of HOPE opened.

Beyond the scenery, what sets the Lindner Center apart from other mental health care providers is their highly customized treatment plan for each patient. Whether a patient is coming for a residential stay, which often averages about 22 days, or outpatient care, which consists of weekly, monthly or quarterly visits, the first step is to do a diagnostic evaluation of the patient to gain a holistic understanding of the issues at hand.

“Everybody’s experience is unique to them. There may be themes or groups mutually beneficial for many patients at once, but we try to recognize how we can address very specific needs for each patient,” Pierson says. “We really do see the gamut in terms of disorders—depression, bipolar, anxiety, eating disorders, OCD, substance abuse—or combinations of those.”

According to Pierson, the Lindner Center’s clinical team has seen mental health issues become more and more complex over the years. With a rise in celebrity suicides, public shootings and the opioid crisis, Pierson says the conversation surrounding mental health must continue to become more prevalent in order to treat it.

“It seems that the age of suicide victims is getting younger and younger.

When you’re talking about 10-year-old kids, this is a crisis,” Pierson says. “I think we’re at a crossroads here. If we’re going to make some changes, now is the time. What if we were addressing it like other crises? Think about when there’s been an outbreak of Swine flu, for example. The health department, everyone got involved right away. People began getting vaccinated and everybody was talking about it. With mental health, we must treat this the same way. We need to make it front and center.”

Part of the mission of the Lindner Center is to encourage the community to start that conversation. Along with numerous resources on their website, including blogs and educational materials, the Lindner Center also hosts a bi-monthly educational series, which covers topics about mental health, substance abuse disorders, and strategies for coping.

“We want to get people talking about it,” Pierson says. “Mental illness is treatable. It’s a matter of accessing care and getting good, quality care.”

JOANNE HURLEY IS NOT NEW TO RESCUING AND LOVING ANIMALS. As Executive Director of the Humane Association of Warren County, Hurley has been with the organization for nine years and says she never misses her former career working in (human) medicine.

“I always loved medicine, but I love this even more,” Hurley says with a smile.

As a privately owned and operated shelter, the Humane Association survives on adoptions and donations and is not funded by tax dollars. It’s the only shelter and adoption center serving all of Warren County, and when you walk in the front doors, you immediately feel a sense of joy, love and compassion. Hurley and her team share four dogs’ stories. HOW DID HARVEY ARRIVE TO THE HUMANE ASSOCIATION? Harvey came from a very poor home life. He didn’t have a lot of hair when we got him, was full of fleas and malnourished. He was rescued by the dog warden and brought to us. Almost every animal coming through the door needs some sort of medical attention, whether it is simple like vaccinations or flea infestation, or more extensive because they were attacked, extremely sick or hit by a car. The animals coming through our doors receive the care and attention they need before they become adoptable.

RACHEL KOPFLER, PRESIDENT OF THE MASON PARKS & RECREATION FOUNDATION, NOTICED SOMETHING SPECIAL AS HER TRIPLETS WERE GROWING UP TOGETHER: EVEN THOUGH ONE OF THEM WAS BORN WITH A SPINAL CORD DEFECT, THEY ALL PLAYED REALLY WELL TOGETHER. “When he was born, the doctors weren’t exactly sure what he’d be able to do,” Kopfler says. “He really exceeded expectations of doctors and therapists. Part of why he was able to do so well is that he had two typical siblings the exact same age who he was able to model from every day.

He found other ways for his body to do those same things.”

The Mason Parks & Recreation Foundation is working toward an exciting opportunity for Mason and Deerfield Township children with special needs and typical children to play alongside each other at the Common Ground Playground. Located on a 34-acre lot near US 42 and Snider Road, the new development will include features that make it more accessible than other playgrounds, while still being safe and exciting for all kinds of children.

Some features, like fencing that keeps children from running too far from caregivers and ramps that allow all

children access to play equipment, may seem simple, but they actually make the playground quite groundbreaking.

The safety measures protect and encourage children to explore, both typical and those with special needs.

Inclusive playgrounds help children develop various essential motor skills, but a large part of the benefit comes from socialization.

“Getting typical children playing side-by-side with children with special needs helps them both benefit,” Kopfler says.

The project has been designed in six phases, and fundraising is still taking place for phases four and five: the parking lot and the shelter house that will hold restrooms. The City of Mason has offered a matching grant this year for the second time, matching each dollar raised up to $300,000.

There are many ways that you can contribute to the Common Ground Playground through donations online and by participation in upcoming Mason events. Local races, including the Mason Triumphant Triathlon, are donating proceeds to the playground this year. ABOUT 10 YEARS AGO, THE MASON SCHOOLS FOUNDATION (MSF) WAS BORN FROM ASKING THE QUESTION, “WHAT DOES THE MASON CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT NEED TO SUSTAIN STEADY EXCELLENCE?” according to Mindy Patton, past MSF President and current Grant Chair.

In 2008, when Mason experienced a period of rapid growth, local grandparents Ken and Joan Campbell donated a generous $40,000 to the district.

Local leaders then pulled together and created an educational foundation “whose real focus was to help raise funds, working towards an endowment and putting money back into the schools to help fund things that were above and beyond what the district could fund out of their own tax-based dollars,” Patton explains.

The goal from inception was, in ten years, to be able to give back $100,000 in grants each year to fund innovative programs. The Foundation achieved that goal in just five years.

In nearly two decades as an educator, Cooper was an elementary teacher in Centerville City Schools, a successful principal in Kettering City Schools and most recently served as Chief Innovation Officer for Mason. Cooper has already hit the ground running as superintendent through his “Community Conversations” sessions, where residents can ask questions and become more familiar with Cooper and his goals for the district. We recently sat down with Cooper to learn why he’s passionate about Mason.

“The emphasis on innovation caught my attention first.

Mason designed a new role called the ‘Chief Innovation Officer,’ which was a role I had pitched to two of my previous districts. It shows they are serious about listening to and implementing new ideas.”

“Mason has a culture of excellence that they’re known for, a reputation of high standards. We kind of joked when I worked at Centerville about ‘chasin’ Mason.’ We were always striving to be more like Mason.”

“The quality of leadership was something that really stuck out to me. Just like with academics, Mason has a high standard for the leadership in their schools.”

“The community surrounding the schools of Mason is incredible. There’s a lot of thought that goes into what has built the community. From family-owned businesses to well-kept parks, the community is very appealing.”

“Something that has kept me engaged are the people.

The interactions I’ve had with students who are engaged in their learning and the teachers who are passionate about Mason, even the business partners are very supportive. Once I got here, it reinforced that this was the place I need to be.”
