As I reflect on this year’s significant changes and what I am thankful for, there is one other tradition I would like to share with you. After stuffing ourselves with Turkey Day favorites, we would pass around a copper container with little bells that we would use to share what we were thankful for that year. So for my first bell, I am thankful for my family for supporting me through a career change as I started Mason & Deerfield Lifestyle. The next bell goes to our amazing advertising partners. Without their support, we would not be able to tell the stories of our communities each month. They selflessly give back to local causes and organizations, and I encourage you to thank our partners by shopping at their stores and using their services. Be sure to tell them you saw them in the magazine. My third bell goes to everyone who has allowed us to share their story: from our own Mason Deerfield Chamber’s 50th anniversary to a local ministry helping women halfway around the world; from Rachel Rice advocating for the Warren County Board of Developmental Disabilities in Washington D.C. to our favorite local sweet treats at Tucker’s Whippy Dip. The fourth goes to the wonderfully talented writers and photographers who create engaging content and photos every month. I am extremely thankful for our first editor, Abbey Bradley; and our current editor, Maria Eilers, who seamlessly pull together so many moving parts to produce a high-quality magazine each month. OF M S NATIONAL MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS SOCIETY STORY BY ALEX LISA The National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society exists so that people affected by MS can live their best lives. This means the Society is committed to investing in cutting-edge MS research, providing programs and services to people living with this disease, and advocating for people with MS on the federal, state and local levels. Holly Pendell, Director of Advocacy and Activist Engagement in Ohio, has seen the impact of these efforts firsthand. “I work with hundreds of MS Activists to help them tell their personal stories to decision makers in order to create change,” shares Pendell. Access to affordable medications is a priority issue for the Society. Pendell says finding the right medication can be a long and expensive process because the various Disease Modifying Therapies (DMTs) work differently for each person. “Our MS Activists are committed to using their collective voices to have a meaningful impact on policy issues that affect people living with MS; these issues include accountability and transparency in drug pricing,” Pendell explains. Someone who has personally experienced the benefits of these accomplishments is Symmes Township resident and MS Activist Bari Thornberry. Thornberry was diagnosed with MS at age 21, while a senior in college. “It really changed the course of the way I saw my life going,” says Thornberry. Thornberry became an MS Activist. “We’ve met with Senators Portman and Brown, and Representatives Chabot and Wenstrup,” Thornberry proudly states. “When we share our stories, people are receptive. We’ve accomplished great things for (MS) research funding.” The 21st Century Cures Act is a good example. The Act will create a database of people with neurological conditions, something that has not been done since the 1970’s. This data can help provide insights into MS treatment demand and effectiveness.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE TO GET INTO THIS PROFESSION? I wanted to work with people. I knew that there were so many different things that I could do with my nursing degree. I chose to be a family nurse practitioner because I wanted more autonomy in providing patient care. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST REWARDING PART OF WORKING IN HEALTHCARE? I like educating people about their healthcare so that they can make the changes needed to stay healthy. WHAT ARE YOUR PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS? My kids are my greatest accomplishment. I remember seeing how much my great-grandmother loved her job as a registered nurse at a local hospital. WHAT ARE YOU DOING WHEN NOT WITH A PATIENT? I make sure all my rooms have been stocked. I check to see if any messages are in my in-basket mail. I also make sure I’m caught up on health stream courses. After all patients have been seen for the day, I restock my rooms and check the lobby to see if there is any trash to pick up before leaving; I make sure everything is well put together for the next day. WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO WORK AT AN URGENT CARE? I transferred from the hospital to work at Premier Health Urgent Care; I knew that I wanted to be more hands-on with patients.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A FAMILY NURSE PRACTITIONER? I wanted to have more autonomy than I did as a nurse. I chose the family route because I wanted to care for patients of all ages. The most rewarding part of my job is getting to help people on some of their worst days. CAN YOU SHARE THREE THINGS YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF ACCOMPLISHING? Surviving working full-time in the ER and going to graduate school full-time, graduating with my master’s degree at 26 and purchasing my first home. FOR YOU: PUMPKIN OREO PIE

INGREDIENTS + 8 ounces cream cheese + ½ cup sugar + 1 tablespoon vanilla + 1 can pumpkin pie filling + ½ tablespoon pumpkin pie spice + Oreo pie crust, pre-made + 4-6 crushed Oreos + Whipped topping

DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare the Oreo pie crust as directed. 2. In a large bowl, whip the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla together. 3. Layer the cream cheese mixture into the pre-made Oreo pie crust. Let set in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. 4. In a separate mixing bowl, blend pumpkin pie filling and pumpkin spice. 5. Layer it on top of the cream cheese mixture. Let set in the refrigerator another few hours or overnight. 6. Pipe or spread the whipped topping on top of the pie. 7. Garnish with crushed Oreos on top.

INGREDIENTS + 3 cups garbanzo bean flour + 1 ½ tablespoons cinnamon + 2 ½ tablespoons gluten-free egg substitute mixed with 2 ½ tablespoons warm water + ½ cup organic canned pumpkin puree (no sugar added) + ½ cup organic peanut butter (no sugar added) + ½ cup honey + 1 tablespoon dehydrated pork liver + ½ cup water

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 225 degrees F. 2. In a large bowl, add flour, cinnamon and dehydrated pork liver. Mix until ingredients are well blended. 3. In a separate bowl, whisk together gluten-free egg substitute and 2 ½ tablespoons water until completely blended with no lumps. 4. Add ½ cup water, honey, pumpkin and peanut butter to egg substitute mixture and combine until fully mixed. 5. Using a wooden spoon, fold egg mixture into flour. Mix until dough is formed. 6. Divide dough into four sections. Lightly flour the counter and rolling pin using extra garbanzo bean flour. Form one section into a ball and begin rolling out from the center. (Put rest in the fridge while waiting) 7. Roll dough until it is 1/8 inch thick. Cut cookies with small 1-inch cookie cutter and place on baking sheet. 8. Bake for 35-40 minutes until crispy. Cool cookies on a baking rack until room temperature.
