LIFESTYLE LETTER
Provisionally Stylish September 2026 THE SIDEWALK outside Mama’s Happy unraveled into taupe thread and pulled me under, vest first, into a marble room lit by track lighting. Seven judges sat on a dais. The center judge, placard reading CHIFFON, regarded the City Lifestyle logo stitched over my heart the way people regard a garage sale from the car. “You stand,” she said, “before the Maple Grove Style Audit, convened every September to determine whether this town has earned its Style Issue.” “Is that a real thing?” “It is now.” “And if we fail?” “Every resident wears cargo shorts. Forever. Even to weddings.” I began my defense. Bisque Boutique, where I bought Annie a sweater for Valentine’s Day. She peeked in the bag three days early and has worn it since. A judge noted: “Sentimental. Continue.” Kim at Glo Nails & Spa gave Annie a head spa treatment. She described it to me for eleven minutes. I have never had one. I stand by it as evidence anyway. A judge raised an eyebrow. “Secondhand evidence?” “The best kind,” I said. Seven pens moved at once. Then: Joel at Encore Electric. No comment needed. “Wait,” said a second judge. “Joel? Recessed lighting Joel?” “That’s him,” I said. She glanced at the track lighting, then away. “He did ours too.” Chiffon cleared her throat. “We’ll allow it.” Then, less generously: “Compelling. As sentiment. Useless as a defense.” “Then let me tell you about my wife.” Chiffon leaned in. “Gold hoop diamond earrings from Croft and Stern. She wears them daily, unlike actual shoes. And a gold pawheart pendant with a diamond tucked in the corner, for two dogs who might as well be our fifth and sixth children. I gave it to her for her birthday. She hasn’t taken it off since.” The room went quiet. “She didn’t buy any of it for a Style Issue. She puts it on to take the dogs out.” Chiffon set down her pen. “The town is acquitted. You are provisional.” “Provisionally?” “Lose the vest.” “Absolutely not. It has a logo. It has purpose.” “Everything has purpose. That doesn’t make it style. Which is why this stays provisional. Forever.” She sighed like this wasn’t her first vest. “We reconvene next September,” she said. “Dress accordingly.” The marble dissolved. I was back on the sidewalk, cargo shorts avoided, holding a bag from Mama’s Happy I don’t remember buying. I still have the vest. Provisionally. TIM DORAN, PUBLISHER @MAPLEGROVECITYLIFESTYLE

8-14: Maple Grove Days returned with another memorable celebration of community, featuring the ever-popular bed races, business expo, corn feed, fireworks, live entertainment, and family activities. Where
Reindeer Stood The Looneys spent forty years making that building matter. Then they picked Annette Hall to keep it that way.

For twenty-eight Decembers, there was a man at that building who wasn’t a man at all — not to the kids in the line. He was Santa Claus. The same one, every year, with live reindeer on the lawn and a line that wrapped around a rustic north-woods lodge on the rise above I-94. For twenty years, there was a Girls Night Out inside those same walls that raised money for CROSS Services, one dollar and one glass of wine at a time. For forty years total, in one form or another, there was a couple — Dave and Linda Looney — who believed, as Dave put it, that a business is as much a citizen of a town as anyone else living in it. Last winter, they announced they were retiring. Forty years is a long time to hold a standard. They wanted to make sure whoever took their building next would hold it too. They didn’t sell to the highest bidder. They sold to the business they believed would keep it. This spring, Bridal Aisle Boutique — Annette Hall’s thirteen-year-old shop from Osseo, with more than 2,000 gowns and a reputation for getting brides out the door same-day, dress in hand — became the new owner of the building everyone in Maple Grove still calls The Woods. “We have a standard that we represent in Maple Grove,” Dave Looney said, “and we wanted it to be the same.” When the Looneys announced their retirement, 450 responses landed almost immediately. And Dave’s own staff — people who were losing their jobs — reacted, every one of them, the same way. “The first thing they say is, ‘We are happy for you and congratulations.’” That’s the thing Bridal Aisle was actually buying. The timber and stone came with it. Annette and Brad Hall spent the spring finding out what that meant. They left the bones alone — the timber, the stone, the lodge-like warmth that made it a landmark in the first place — and changed what happens inside them. Where gift shelves once stood, brides now sit with their moms, their sisters, their whole entourage, on couches in front of full-length mirrors, watching each other walk out in dress after dress until someone says yes. Private fitting rooms, and a wall displaying every gown in the store, so a bride sees her whole world of options before she tries on a single one. The men’s wing became The Woods Men’s Suits — named on purpose after the building rather than the boutique — with rentals and suits made to keep. The Looneys left the bear. He still faces I-94, and Hall is giving him a job in menswear. Bridal Aisle was doing business in the space by the end of March — the same month wedding dress season traditionally begins, Hall says, as new designer collections release — and threw the doors open for a grand celebration in May. “All of our dresses are off the rack, brand new, that you can bring home with you that day,” Annette says. She means it literally. One bride drove down from Duluth on the day of her wedding and left with a gown, altered to fit, in time for the ceremony. That promise built her business in Osseo for thirteen years. Now it has room. “When they come in our door, we just want them to feel no fear, feel very comfortable, and know that we will take great care of them.”
Annette Hall, Owner

“We’re thrilled to call Maple Grove home. Bridal Aisle is honored to give back to the community and continue the events here in our new home.” — The Halls For all twenty-eight years of that Santa Claus line, the man in the suit was Dean Vehrenkamp, who now sits on the Corcoran City Council. Every kid who ever whispered a wish list to him grew up without knowing it. Santa is already set to come back in 2026. The building has always been good at keeping secrets. It still is. The secret is just a dress now, hanging in a fitting room, that one particular groom doesn’t get to see until she’s walking toward him. On the cover of this issue, a bride stands in front of that same building. Same timber. Same stone gables. Same lawn where Dave Looney once found three loose cows grazing, back when everything behind the property was farmland and a water tower. She has no idea a live reindeer once stood roughly where she’s standing. She doesn’t need to. The building already knows how to hold a moment like this one. It’s just holding a different kind now. Bridal Aisle Boutique and The Woods Men’s Suits are now open at 15825 95th Ave N, Maple Grove. BridalAisleMN.com

NOBODY WA K E S YOU
Fourteen steps, ninet y minutes, and brand new ever ything at Glo Nails & Spa. ARTICLE BY MARILOU GRONDIN PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN SIEMERS PHOTOGRAPHY

S PA DAY | HEALTH + WELLN E SS
Somewhere down the row at Glo Nails & Spa, someone is asleep behind a heated eye mask. There is always someone. Nobody wakes them. They’ve stopped watching the clock, and nobody’s in a hurry to remind them what time it is.
“It felt better than a facial. It was a massage for your head and scalp.” — Annie Doran, editor Getting a person into that condition takes fourteen steps. It’s called a Japanese Head Spa, and that’s four more steps than most mortgage closings. It’s September, the month Minnesota gets its life back in order. Think what you’ve put yourself through since June. Three months of sun. Lake water. Chlorine. Sweat, ponytails, one increasingly loyal baseball cap, and a humidity index your hair took personally. Nobody thanked you for any of it. There’s a room in The Grove built for the reboot. Glo Nails & Spa is Kim Nguyen’s second act. Her first salon, Beauté Contour Nail Lounge, stays so busy that a second location stopped being a gamble and became a matter of time. So she bought an existing salon, gutted it, and rebuilt it—brand new everything—reopening in September 2024. Two Septembers of resets ago. A first salon proves you can do the work. A second proves you understood why people kept coming back.
Years at the first shop taught Kim what she was really selling. “People want more than flawless nails,” she says. “They want comfort, calm, and a space where they feel genuinely cared for.” The proof is the head spa. Warm water. An aromatherapy scalp cleanse with seasonal blends. A heated eye mask. By the time the scalp massage starts, you’ve already lost track of what came first. It keeps going long past where you would have politely thanked anyone else and sat up. The full ninety-minute version is called the Luxe Glo Retreat, and it is not a shampoo. A shampoo cleans your scalp. This takes care of it. And the mind attached to it. Our editor Annie went first. Kim did the treatment herself. “It felt better than a facial,” Annie reported. “It was a massage for your head and scalp.”

Relaxing Head Spa
24
S PA DAY | HEALTH + WELLN E SS
You should know that Annie loves facials. Really loves them. So from her, that’s not a compliment. That’s a conversion. Asked for details, she used the word relaxing three times in four sentences, which tells you where her brain still was. Tim went too, for the first manicure of his life. He reported back from a massage pedicure chair: “Out of this world nice. I can see why women get their nails done.” He also noticed the calm here isn’t silence. A hum of easy conversation runs underneath everything, much of it Kim, whose way of talking with people makes it feel safe to relax. He’s already asked when he can go back—not bad for a guy who walked in expecting to feel a little ridiculous. The room makes it easy to believe them. A full wall of polish. Warm wood, soft round lights, a plant in every sightline. Pedicure chairs whose tufted backs curve over you like crescent moons. Beside each one, a little gold tray with orange slices. The nail side holds up its end: gel manicures, structured nails, luxury pedicures, gentle on natural nails. Your hands spent the summer gripping paddles, pulling weeds, and opening sunscreen. Your feet spent it entirely in public. Come Halloween they enter witness protection until spring, so consider September the farewell tour. “What motivates me most is seeing clients walk out happier, calmer, and more confident,” Kim says. Running two salons takes energy, and she protects hers with “quiet moments, warm aromatherapy, and simple routines.” Her own reset is a head spa followed by a fresh gel manicure. The owner of the spa also requires the spa. Glo is open seven days, walk-ins welcome. Somewhere out past October there’s a winter hat with your name on it. Soon enough, it’ll be you in the chair. Ninety minutes. Fourteen steps. Nobody will wake you.

YOUR Hair Is Telling ON YOU Twenty years behind a chair, and the question that sent her back to school ARTICLE BY ANTARA MURDESHWAR PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN SIEMERS PHOTOGRAPHY
Weddings. Breakups. Babies. For twenty years, people told Tabitha Fredrichs everything from a styling chair. The only question she couldn’t answer was the one they asked most: why is my hair doing this? Not because she didn’t care. Because nobody had ever taught her the science behind what she was looking at. Then it happened to her. Her own hair started thinning. Around the same time, a client sat down who’d already done everything right: multiple doctors, medications she didn’t want to take, still losing hair, still scared, still no closer to why. Tabitha didn’t have an answer for her either. It was the last time she let herself not have one. She spent the next several years back in school, in trichology and naturopathic medicine, learning to connect what a scalp shows under a dermascope to what’s happening everywhere else in a body. The answers she has now — at Tabitha F Hair, her new studio inside Nedia Salon, ten minutes down Vicksburg in Plymouth — would have startled the stylist she used to be. Under magnification, a follicle gives up whether it’s dealing with genetics or an autoimmune disorder. A scan of a few strands can point to specific vitamin and mineral deficiencies happening inside the body. A cheek swab can suggest how someone may respond to entire categories of treatment before they’ve spent a year on the wrong one. Hair, it turns out, has been keeping notes the whole time. She just learned to read them. The list clients bring her now is rarely just the one thing they called about. One came in for genetic hair loss. Underneath it: adrenal issues, a diet working against her, a smoking habit she’d carried for years. Tabitha treated the whole list. The client changed how she ate. Quit smoking. Started moving her body again. Her hair

came back, and so did she. The anxiety and depression she’d never once mentioned in that first appointment simply lifted. “People don’t really expect that from a hair loss specialist,” Tabitha says. “But it really does help people understand that everything is connected.” She sees why it surprises people. Hair loss looks like a private, physical problem, so it gets treated like one — until it starts rewriting a person’s week. A hand that keeps checking a part line in the car mirror. A hat brim pulled down half an inch further than it used to be. The skipped dinner. The declined photo. CONTINUED > S EP TEMB ER 2 0 2 6 | C I TYL I FE STYL E . C O M / M A P L E M N

Small withdrawals, easy to miss one at a time, that add up to someone who’s forgotten they used to move through the world differently. Tabitha recognizes the pattern because she’s lived inside it: the counted strands in the drain, the quiet math of skipping an event over how a photo might turn out. So when she tells a client “I’m not here to judge,” it doesn’t land like professional reassurance. It lands like someone who isn’t imagining the bad morning. She’s remembering hers. She treated herself with everything she’d learned, too. Her hair isn’t thin anymore. That’s why the first appointment is never a protocol handed over cold. It’s hormones, nutrition, stress, autoimmune history, scalp health — and clearing out whatever misinformation a client walked in already carrying. Only then does she build something for that one person. “It’s all a different path for everyone,” she says. “It’s not a one size fits all.” Slower than a supplement and a promise. Also the version that sticks — she’s watched the other kind plateau too many times to keep pretending otherwise. The client who came in about her hair left having quit smoking, with her anxiety gone and her regrowth underway — three outcomes she never asked for, because she only knew to name the one she could see in the mirror. Nobody built her a plan for her anxiety. She just stopped being treated like a scalp with a person attached, and the rest came loose on its own. “We’re in this together,” Tabitha says. She was never only talking about hair.
What She Reads Twenty years behind a styling chair, Tabitha Fredrichs could see hair loss but never explain it. Then she trained in trichology and naturopathic medicine. 15650 36th Ave N, Suite 120, Plymouth | 763.544.9126 | thenedia.com/hair-loss

The Money Was Already There He put a sleepless couple's fears to rest — no script required. They had stopped sleeping. It wasn’t one bad month. It was the slow kind of worry — the kind that shows up around two in the morning when you’re pouring everything into building something new and, for now, more is going out than coming in. The balances were creeping the wrong way. And underneath all of it sat the bigger, quieter fear: that they’d fallen behind on the thing you’re not supposed to fall behind on. Retirement. The future. The whole plan. Then they sat down across the table from Eric Morris. Eric didn’t open with a pitch. He looked at what they actually had. He found a few places to cut back while the new thing found its feet — and then he told them something nobody had bothered to mention: savings they’d been guarding like it was locked behind glass could be reached, penalty-free, to knock down the debt that was keeping them up. They just hadn’t known. Then he did the thing they didn’t see coming. He showed them where they actually stood next to everyone else their age — and it turned out they weren’t behind at all. Making less than usual, mid-climb, still losing sleep over it, and their future was, by the numbers, just fine.

The money was already there. So was the future. The thing that had been keeping them awake was gone. “I deliver hope,” Eric says. “But it’s hope backed up by data.” “I’m incapable of a script,” he adds. More than a decade in financial services — nine of those years at a major bank, then a stretch inside a large national advisory firm — taught him the mechanics of the job and the art of showing up in ways that didn’t quite feel like him. So he left and built his own practice, on the theory that trust beats tactics. The proof came in a compliment he still repeats. A client once told him he reminded them of Mr. Rogers. Someone else put it more plainly to a friend: “Eric’s just a good dude — you should talk to him.” He’ll take that over any sales award. He spends real time talking people out of what they think financial planning is. No, he can’t beat the market. “If someone promises they

can beat the S&P consistently, run,” he says. He’s not selling miracles. The job is discipline, planning, accountability — and mostly, sitting across a table from someone while they work out that they’re going to be okay. He’s partial to the people who think they’ve started too late, or don’t have enough to bother. “The first thousand is the hardest,” he says. “The second gets easier. Same with the first million.” Which brings it back to the couple who couldn’t sleep. Eric didn’t hand them new money, and he didn’t rescue their retirement. Both were already there. He just showed them where to look — and then let them exhale. That’s the whole job, the way he does it. Not beating anything. Just being the person on the other side of the table who tells you the truth and means it. A good dude. They’re sleeping now. 9325 Upland Ln. EVERY CLOSET HOLDS A VOTE EACH MORNING. THE UNANIMOUS ONES ARE THE ONES NOBODY REMEMBERS.
36
T R E N D SE T T E R | STYL E + BE AU T Y
Every morning at seven, my closet convenes. Attendance is full, minus a pair of shoes that has abstained from everything since the day I bought them. A motion is made, and it's always the same motion: wear the things that agree with each other. It's seconded instantly, because things that agree with each other are, by definition, agreeable. The vote carries. I get dressed. Nobody mentions it all day. There's a term for a vote passed without a single objection — nemine contradicente — and it is the founding principle of my closet. Navy seconds navy. Structure seconds structure. Every piece nods along and the whole thing passes clean. It isn't a badly run closet. It's an extremely well-run one. It's why you can be told you look put-together four days running and never once be asked where you got it. The fix isn't a new wardrobe. It's an opposition party. Seat one dissenter. A track jacket objects to a pencil skirt. The skirt declines to withdraw. Both stay on the floor. The outfit passes four to one. Masculine against feminine, polished against relaxed, vintage against modern — those aren't styles. They're seating charts. Now look at the belt on my yellow blazer. It’s webbing. It’s the least glamorous object in the frame, and it’s the only reason you looked at that picture twice. It cinches the whole thing and calls the question. Do it long enough and you notice you sustain the same objection every morning. That's the signature. Not an outfit. A standing objection. Enter it into the minutes. No one reads the minutes of a meeting where everybody agreed. They read the minority report. Tomorrow at seven, the closet convenes again. The shoes will abstain. Somebody else object. Adjourned.

INGREDIENTS: • • • • • •
1 bottle, standard size, of pinot grigio 2 1/2 cups fresh apple cider 1 cup club soda 1/2 cup ginger brandy 3 honey crisp apples, chopped 3 pears, chopped
heart happy
DIRECTIONS: Combine all ingredients together and stir. Refrigerate for an hour or so (or longer) before serving. The drink can be enjoyed immediately, if desired, but the longer you let the ingredients sit and mix, the deeper the flavors will be. Giving it time to develop will make the drink more captivating and interesting.
NOTE: Regular brandy can be used, but ginger brandy gives it an extra kick of flavor.
