GEN TLEMEN’S ISSUE

He’s Already Watching

“Dad, you have to come see this.”

If you have a 9-year-old, you know what that usually means.

Bedtime is negotiable. Urgency is not.

I was in the middle of finishing this issue with Annie, both of us working through the usual last-minute details, when Bennett walked out holding something carefully in both hands. It was a magazine.

His magazine.

Covered in Minecraft stickers, with a bold title across the front: The Adventure Magazine.

We stopped.

He was proud. Really proud of it.

And just like that, everything else felt a little less important. Because in that moment, it was obvious.

He’s already watching.

He sees the late nights. The conversations. The way we care about getting it right. Whether we mean to or not, we’re showing him what is worth doing. Maybe one day he’ll create something great of his own.

Actually… he already did.

This month’s Gentlemen’s Issue kept bringing me back to that moment.

Because real leadership rarely looks like a title. Most of the time, it doesn’t look like leadership at all.

It looks like showing up when you said you would. It looks like caring about the details no one notices.

It looks like doing things the right way, even when it would be easier not to.

In the discipline behind a well-run business.

In the steady presence of a coach.

In the kind of leadership that doesn’t need to be loud to be effective. Because the truth is, someone is always watching.

And more often than not, they’re learning from what we do, not what we say. Even when we don’t realize it.

Sometimes, they’re already making their own version of it.

The Moment It Sticks

Where first throws turn into something more

There’s a moment the first time you throw an axe.

It leaves your hand, spins once, maybe twice, and then… thud. It sticks.

That moment is what keeps people coming back.

And it’s exactly what Dragon’s Lair Axe & Tap was built around.

Tucked into Maple Grove’s growing entertainment scene, Dragon’s Lair offers something just a little unexpected. But that’s the point. What might seem like a novelty at first quickly reveals itself as something far more intentional.

Built by co-founders David and Austin, both professional axe throwers, the space blends elite-level skill with an inviting, social atmosphere that welcomes everyone from first-timers to league regulars.

“Our first season we had about 30 members,” Austin says. “Our last season, we were over 70.”

That growth didn’t happen by accident.

FROM HOBBY TO HIGH LEVEL

David and Austin found the sport in very different ways.

Austin started young, throwing axes with his dad at the family cabin. David discovered it years later, shortly before the 2020 quarantine. What they shared

was a natural pull toward the discipline and precision of the craft.

That passion quickly evolved into something more serious.

“We just returned from the WATL World Championships in Tulsa, and the Dragon’s Lair community had a remarkable week,” David says. “Austin dropped back-to-back 42s on the defending Big Axe champion and hit nine kills in a row in hatchet duals. I finished fourth in the world in Knife Duals.”

They sent a dozen throwers. Every one of them competed at a high level.

MORE THAN A NIGHT OUT

Still, Dragon’s Lair was never meant to be just a place for experts.

From the beginning, the goal was to create an experience that anyone could step into and enjoy.

Rather than a simple activity, it’s designed to feel like progression. Guests learn proper technique, understand the mechanics of a great throw, and improve, often within a single visit.

“You’ve got your own space, pro-level axes, a wide variety of games, and a team that knows how to guide you without overcomplicating it,” David says. “Add in the bar and food, and it turns into a full experience.”

“It’s not just throwing an axe. It’s an experience you get better at every time you come back.”

Each session begins with hands-on instruction from trained “axemasters,” many of whom were coached directly by David and Austin. The focus is safety and confidence, but just as importantly, making it approachable and fun.

BUILT FOR GROUPS

That same energy translates naturally to groups.

Whether it’s a team looking to step out of the office, a group of friends celebrating, or a company bringing people together, the experience creates something shared. There’s just enough competition to make it engaging, and enough structure to make it easy for everyone to participate.

People relax. They connect. And before long, the focus shifts from the throw itself to the experience of doing it together.

ALWAYS SOMETHING NEW

And it’s not just throwing at a board.

Guests can choose from more than 30 interactive games, from Connect 4 and Battleship to Zombie Apocalypse and Mythical Buck Hunter. New games are introduced regularly, giving returning guests something new to try each time.

That variety keeps the experience fresh, whether it’s your first visit or your fifth.

BUILT TO STAY A WHILE

The “Tap” side adds another layer.

With a curated mix of craft beers and familiar favorites, the space encourages guests to slow down, connect, and turn a quick outing into a full evening.

It’s not just about the throw. It’s about the time around it.

“I’ve been making custom axes for myself for five years,” he says. “Now I’m starting to make them for others.”

A CRAFT WITHIN THE CRAFT

For Austin, the passion goes even deeper.

“I’ve been making custom axes for myself for five years,” he says. “Now I’m starting to make them for others.”

That level of detail and care shows up in everything they do.

Together, David and Austin have built more than a venue.

They’ve built a community.

Their experience at the highest levels of the sport doesn’t create distance. It makes the experience better, giving guests the chance to learn from people who truly know the craft.

And it all comes back to that first moment.

Thud. Stuck.

How Wolf River Electric is changing the way homeowners think about energy

The Wolf River Electric Team
“With Wolf River Electric, solar turns a monthly expense into something homeowners can eventually own.”

There’s a moment most homeowners know well. It shows up once a month, in the mailbox or your inbox: the electric bill.

You glance at it, maybe wince, then pay it and move on. But what if that bill wasn’t just a bill?

What if it was something you could eventually reduce or even eliminate? Because here’s the reality. The utility bill never ends. Solar payments do.

A DIFFERENT STARTING POINT

When Wolf River Electric first began, it wasn’t about trends or the latest green technology. It was about something simpler.

Energy isn’t optional. From day one, the company was built on a straightforward idea: if you are going to pay for electricity for the rest of your life, shouldn’t that money work for you?

“The goal was not to sell luxury upgrades,” their team explains. “It was to provide something essential. Reliable energy.”

That mindset still defines how they operate.

FROM BILL TO ASSET

That philosophy becomes real in the numbers. In one case, a homeowner came in with a $180 monthly bill.

At first, solar felt like too big of a step. Then they looked at the long-term picture: same dollars, different outcome. One path is a lifetime of payments. The other has an endpoint.

“We are all already paying for electricity,” they explain. “The question is whether that money keeps going to the utility, or toward something you own.” And ownership changes everything. Because eventually, the system is paid off.

And when that happens, the energy it produces can continue working for the homeowner long after the payments end.

Energy is evolving fast. Incentives shift. Headlines change. The market can feel uncertain. But Wolf River doesn’t build around incentives. They build around something more stable. People will always need electricity.

“Incentives may evolve,” they say. “The need for energy won’t.” And as demand increases and infrastructure strains, the long-term direction of costs becomes harder to ignore. You are going to pay for energy. The only question is how.

MORE THAN JUST SOLAR

That thinking is driving their next phase. They are expanding into battery storage, commercial-scale systems, and EV infrastructure. Not just generating power. Helping customers store it. Control it. Use it on their terms.

There is no shortage of solar companies. What makes Wolf River different is how they define the problem.

“Energy is not a luxury,” they say. “It’s a necessity. That means every system has to make financial sense.”

Not someday. Over time. And long after it’s paid off. That shows up in how they design systems. Every installation is tailored, properly sized, built for long-term performance, and just as important, clearly explained. Because when people understand the numbers, the decision becomes simple.

ROOTED IN COMMUNITY

Even as they’ve grown, they’ve stayed local.

Their team lives here, works here, and raises families here. That shapes how they show up: less pressure, more education, and real conversations. Because this isn’t just about installations. It’s about trust.

LOOKING AHEAD

Over the next few years, the focus is not just growth. It’s better growth. More control for homeowners. More stability in an uncertain market. More ways to turn a monthly expense into something that works for you.

Because the mission hasn’t changed. You are going to pay for energy either way. The difference is whether it stays a bill or becomes something you own.

Raising the Standard

BUILT ON CRAFTSMANSHIP, NOT QUICK FIXES

ARTICLE BY KRISTI SELLERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY RYAN SIEMERS PHOTOGRAPHY

There’s a moment every homeowner dreads.

The garage door won’t open. Or worse, it won’t close. You’re stuck. You need it fixed. And you need to trust whoever shows up.

That’s where MN Garage Door is setting a different standard.

BUILT ON DOING THINGS RIGHT

Founded by Nic and Carter, the Minnesota-based company wasn’t built to be the fastest option.

It was built to be the right one.

“Most companies focus on fixing the immediate problem as quickly and cheaply as possible,” Nic says. “A

premium experience is the opposite. It’s intentional. It’s about doing the job right the first time.”

That mindset comes from experience.

Before launching MN Garage Door, Nic saw firsthand how often homeowners were underserved. Missed appointments. Unclear pricing. Temporary fixes that led to repeat calls.

Over time, those patterns become frustrating for homeowners who just want something simple. A repair that actually lasts.

The goal was simple. Build something better. Something dependable. Something homeowners can rely on long after the job is done.

CRAFTSMANSHIP IN THE DETAILS

For MN Garage Door, quality is not a tagline. It’s a process.

Every job begins with a full safety inspection of the entire system, not just the obvious issue.

“We guide the customer through options transparently, without pressure,” Nic explains. “The goal is to give honest, reliable recommendations.”

From there, the work becomes about precision.

Properly balanced systems. Higher-cycle springs. Powder-coated hardware. Upgraded rollers. Stainless steel cables.

Every component is chosen for durability and long-term performance, not just immediate function.

Everything is calibrated before they leave.

And when the job is finished, the space is restored. Cleaned. Reset. Documented with before-and-after photos. Because details matter.

FIXING THE PROBLEM FOR GOOD

They see it all the time.

A homeowner has had the same part replaced again and again. The issue never really goes away.

Quick fixes. Repeat calls.

“When we step in, we look at the full system,” Nic says. “By correcting the root issue and upgrading key components, the door runs smoother and the problem is solved.”

Not temporarily.

Completely.

That difference shows up over time. No repeat calls. No six-month cycle.

Handled.

EARNING TRUST THE RIGHT WAY

Garage doors are easy to ignore until they stop working.

Then it becomes urgent.

And in that moment, trust matters just as much as technical skill.

MN Garage Door understands that responsibility.

They show up on time. Communicate clearly. Do what they say they’re going to do.

They take the time to explain what’s happening, so homeowners feel confident in the decision, not rushed into it.

Because this is not just about a repair.

It’s about knowing it was done right.

A HIGHER STANDARD

In an industry that often feels rushed or transactional, MN Garage Door takes a more disciplined approach.

Focused. Methodical. Consistent.

Not chasing shortcuts. Not cutting corners.

Just doing the work the way it should be done.

Every time.

Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to fix a door.

It’s to fix it once, and fix it right.

Hair Thinning, Shedding

Three Maple Grove men share what drives them, builds others, and makes leadership matter daily.

Leadership That Shows Up, Listens, and Lifts

Some leadership is loud. The kind that announces itself. This isn’t that.

In Maple Grove, these three leaders show something different. Consistent presence. Thoughtful listening. A steady commitment to others. Their impact is built through the small moments that happen every day.

Because when you invest in people, the return lasts.

Jon McCullough

Maple Grove Council member, Roseville Schools District Staff

For Jon, leadership starts with showing up well.

A visit to a senior housing complex became more than routine. Listening led to action and reinforced what he already believed. Trust isn’t given. It’s built over time.

He leads with curiosity, choosing to understand before responding. In both city government and education, his focus is clear: create spaces where people feel supported, safe, and able to thrive.

“It’s important to show up, listen, and follow through in ways people can see and feel.”

That’s what people remember. Not the meeting, but what came from it.

Troy Seubert

Head Wrestling Coach, Maple Grove High School

For Troy, leadership isn’t measured on the scoreboard. It shows up years later.

Former wrestlers come back, not to talk about wins, but about who they became. The discipline. The resilience.

He sees wrestling as more than a sport. It’s a structure. A place for growth, especially for students who need direction or belief in themselves.

Inside the wrestling room, differences fade. Accountability rises.

“Once an athlete knows you care—that’s when change begins.”

That’s the turning point. When effort becomes personal, and growth becomes real.

Troy meets athletes where they are, then pushes them to become more than they thought possible.

Kevin Walsh

Associate Broker, Keller Williams Classic Realty Northwest Founder, The Exchange

Kevin didn’t leave leadership behind when he stepped away from corporate America.

He rebuilt it.

What started as a small gathering in his living room has grown into The Exchange, a community where business leaders share ideas and challenges. He believes success doesn’t happen alone, and the right environment can change everything.

“Opening the door for someone is one thing. Watching them walk through it—that’s the win.”

That’s where his focus stays.

Not on directing. Not on recognition.

On creating space for others to step forward.

Because the strongest leaders don’t just move ahead.

They bring others with them.

AN EXCERPT FROM EPISODE 6 OF SHARE THE LIFESTYLE, A CITY LIFESTYLE PODCAST

Photographer: Brittany Dawn Short

Creative Director: Jen Birn

Stylist: Stephanie Coultress O’Neill

Location: Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, TX

MIKE JOHNSON HAS BUILT HIS LIFE AROUND ONE QUIETLY RADICAL IDEA: THE STANDARD YOU SET PRIVATELY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

After eight years in the Air Force, a celebrated run on national television, and a health crisis abroad that sent him deep into supply chains and ingredient certifications most founders never touch, the result is Oshun — a luxury ritual brand built on provenance you can trace and integrity you can verify. In an exclusive conversation for the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Mike shares what it actually takes to build something worth putting your name on. Read the highlights below, then scan the QR code for the full episode.

Q: YOU BECAME A FAN FAVORITE ON THE BACHELORETTE AND THEN LEFT THE SPOTLIGHT. YOU MOVED TO MEXICO, LEARNED SPANISH, THEN COSTA RICA, AND BUILT A COMPANY. WHAT DID THAT EXPERIENCE TEACH YOU ABOUT HUMAN BEHAVIOR?

A: “If you’re a good person going in, that shows. If you’re not, that shows too. I also learned that people form this parasocial relationship with you — they assume things about you. When all actuality, different circumstances bring out different parts of who you are. I was on TV trying to find love. The kindness people were showing after felt a bit fake, because they wanted to be a part of something that isn’t who I am individually, but a part of what they saw on TV. And so I had to get away from everybody and everything and the noise.”

THE QUIET STANDARD:

MIKE JOHNSON

“Too many people have prayed for me. So I’ve got to get up and do the walking.”
— Mike Johnson

Q: YOU JOINED THE AIR FORCE RIGHT OUT OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE. WHAT WERE YOU ACTUALLY RUNNING TOWARD?

A: “There was something in me that was saying: I’m not living up to my full potential. I was being a follower. My uncle said, ‘What’s going to make you become an adult the fastest?’ I said, obviously, the military. The Air Force broadened my thought process more than anything. We’re so caught up in our own perception — when you learn to understand different people’s perspectives, it adds to you in so many ways.”

Q: WITH OSHUN, YOU OWN YOUR MANUFACTURING, YOU EMPLOY A CHEMIST, EVERY PRODUCT HAS A BATCH NUMBER TRACEABLE TO ITS ORIGIN DATE. WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO THAT DEEP WITH THE BRAND?

A: “The EU bans 1,100 ingredients in personal care products. The U.S. bans nine. That’s my starting point. Oftentimes, it might be the same ingredient, but it comes from a place where it doesn’t have the highest purity. And 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed. Every product Oshun makes carries a batch number that goes back to the exact day it was created — I can show you every single supplier, the date, the origin. I own more than one part of the supply chain because that’s the only way I can stand behind what’s in the bottle.”

This conversation is just the beginning. Mike goes deeper into why he’s buying land up north, the family in the Philippines who prayed over his factory floor, and what he’d tell every person ready to stop performing and start building. Scan the QR code for the full, exclusive City Lifestyle interview on the Share the Lifestyle podcast.
