A Relaxing Weekend, Allegedly

Years ago, my childhood friend Tim came back to Minnesota for a visit and casually asked what I was doing that weekend.

This is how most questionable adventures begin.

A few days later, we were headed to the Boundary Waters for a last-minute trip that sounded peaceful in theory. Lakes. Loons. Fresh air. The kind of outdoor reset that makes you feel like a calmer, better version of yourself.

In reality, the only entry point we could get required hiking two miles down a small trail with a canoe overhead, food, gear, and everything else strapped to our backs.

Then we paddled a few miles, hit another portage, and realized daylight was not waiting around for us.

At some point, in a decision not featured in any wilderness survival manual, an overgrown hiking trail crossed the portage, and we confidently followed the wrong path.

So there we were, carrying a canoe and all our supplies for several extra miles through overgrown woods, slowly realizing our relaxing weekend had become a team-building exercise designed by someone with a grudge.

Eventually, we figured it out, reached the next lake, set up camp, and went fishing on a quiet lake entirely to ourselves.

We cast. We talked. We watched the water. My little Teddy Bear dog, Bella, handled the whole adventure better than either of us and later slept in my hammock like she had booked the trip through a luxury outfitter.

Somewhere in that strange, exhausting, wonderful weekend, I remembered something about exploring: the best memories are not always the easiest ones. Sometimes they are the ones that make you work a little, laugh a lot, and share a story you will still be telling years later.

That is what I love about this month’s Explore Issue.

Exploring does not have to mean traveling across the world. Sometimes it is simply stepping out of the usual rhythm long enough to notice what has been waiting for you: open water, quiet woods, a new place to gather, or a little more space to breathe.

So this July, I hope you find your own version of adventure.

Maybe it will be peaceful.

Maybe it will involve a canoe. Hopefully not.

And Maybe the part that did not go exactly according to plan will be the part you remember most.

See you around Maple Grove,

July 2026

MARINEMAX HELPS MINNESOTA FAMILIES FEEL CONFIDENT, CONNECTED, AND AT HOME ON THE WATER.

WHERE SUMMER SLOWS DOWN

In Minnesota, summer is measured in lake days. It sounds like docks creaking in the morning sun, kids jumping off the back of a pontoon, and boats gliding across the water on a warm Friday evening. For many locals, getting out on the lake is more than recreation. It is the rhythm of the season.

According to TJ Ortmann, General Manager of MarineMax Excelsior and MarineMax Rogers, boating offers something increasingly valuable in today’s fast-moving world: a chance to disconnect.

“Getting out on the water means leaving your obligations on land and escaping the chaos of everyday life,” TJ says. “Once you’re out there, everybody’s there for the same reason. To relax, connect, and enjoy the lake.”

That shared freedom is part of what makes Minnesota boating culture so special. On Lake Minnetonka and beyond, boaters gather in the same bays, restaurants, and marinas throughout the summer. The water has a way of making strangers feel approachable and familiar.

“You meet so many amazing people out on the water,” TJ says. “Everyone’s approachable because they’re out there for the same reason.”

Still, for families who are new to boating, lake life can feel intimidating from the outside. What boat is right? How do you dock? What safety equipment do you need? Where do you even begin?

That is where the MarineMax team focuses much of its work: helping people move from curiosity to confidence. With locations throughout Minnesota, including the Minneapolis suburbs and up north, the company helps customers ease naturally into ownership and everything that comes with it.

“WE TAKE THE TIME TO TEACH PEOPLE AND MAKE SURE THEY’RE EXCITED TO GET OUT THERE.”

“We really make it seamless,” TJ says. “We want people to feel comfortable and confident from day one.”

That support begins long before a customer leaves the dock. Buyers are guided through each stage, from selecting the right model to understanding safety procedures and learning how to navigate the water. Boats are fully detailed before delivery, and the team assists with launch-day instruction, docking guidance, and on-the-water walkthroughs.

“We don’t just hand someone the keys and send them off,” TJ says. “We take the time to teach people and make sure they’re excited to get out there.”

Education remains central to that approach. Throughout the season, boating safety courses and instructional events help make lake life feel welcoming rather than overwhelming.

One popular offering is the “Women on Water” class, hosted on Lake Minnetonka, where women can build confidence behind the wheel in a relaxed, supportive setting. Demo Days, customer appreciation gatherings, and on-the-water showcases also bring boaters together across Minnesota.

“The more comfortable people feel, the more fun boating becomes,” TJ says.

For those still exploring ownership, no-hassle sea trials give customers the chance to experience different boats before making a decision. Instead of simply viewing boats from shore, guests can picture a summer weekend in motion, whether cruising with family, entertaining friends, or finding quieter stretches of shoreline.

“Once people get out on the water, it clicks,” TJ says. “They can picture the memories they’re going to make.”

Those memories are shaping today’s boating trends. TJ says families are looking for more intentional time outdoors together, and brands like Sea Ray and Nautique continue to

“THERE’S THIS SENSE OF COMMUNITY THAT NATURALLY HAPPENS ON THE WATER. IT’S ONE OF THE FEW PLACES WHERE EVERYBODY SLOWS DOWN.”

fit that lifestyle. Nautique surf boats remain popular for watersports, while larger Sea Ray day boats, with room for entertaining, bathrooms, and shaded lounge areas, are favorites for full days on Minnesota lakes.

This summer, those opportunities continue through events like Sea Ray Surf Camp on Lake Minnetonka, where professional instructors help riders of all skill levels learn to surf and wakeboard confidently. Additional gatherings, including the On-Water Boat Show at Charlie’s on Prior and the Lake Minnetonka Wakesurf Open at Surfside Park in Mound, also bring boating enthusiasts together.

“There’s this sense of community that naturally happens on the water,” TJ says. “People wave to each other, help each other dock, meet up at restaurants, or tie up in the bays. It’s one of the few places where everybody slows down.”

And while Lake Minnetonka remains one of the state’s iconic boating destinations, TJ encourages people to explore beyond their usual shoreline. From the Brainerd lakes area to Crosslake and Nisswa, Minnesota offers endless opportunities for summer adventure by water.

Ultimately, boating is about far more than ownership. It is about unplugging from daily routines, reconnecting with loved ones, and embracing Minnesota summers from a setting that naturally invites people to slow down.

“Some of the best memories happen out on the lake,” TJ says. “That’s what people really hold onto.”

MOVING • HAULING • LABOR

COLLEGE HUNKS HAULING JUNK AND MOVING

FULL-SERVICE MOVING • HOURLY MOVING SERVICES • JUNK REMOVAL • DONATION PICKUP • GENERAL LABOR

Do you want careless and disengaged movers to haphazardly schlep your neat stuff across town – or cross country? Or do you want junk removal by people who don’t give a fig about recycling, and would enthusiastically chuck old refrigerators into Fish Lake if they thought they could get away with it? Then you need College LUNKS! Leave them a message today if you would like there to theoretically be a chance that they’ll call you back.

…what’s that? You want the exact opposite of those things? Courteous professionals who’ll make your prized effects materialize wherever you want them with equal parts gingerness and punctuality? Or junk removal service that minimizes your contribution to the dump? Ah. Well, in that case, you need someone incomparably better. And real .

YOU NEED COLLEGE HUNKS! Maple Grove’s premier moving, junk removal, and general labor service is here to help Numero Uno (i.e. you) navigate perplexing challenges sans turmoil!

MOVING

Near. Far. Wherever you go, so too will College HUNKS.

If it’s only a skip and a jump from present location to point B, the convenience of College HUNKS’ hourly moving service may just flabbergast you. But if point B falls outside of skipping-and-jumping range, then you can truly witness College HUNKS at their best.

The most accurate possible estimate; no surprise charges. Guidance, if desired, on how to reduce said estimate, such as by doing your own packing. A crew that never parts ways with your property, or deposits it in a distribution center. It’s bona fide white-glove service. Your sofa will think it’s a movie star.

JUNK REMOVAL

Has your basement, garage, or other space that is vulnerable to getting overrun by junk been overrun by junk? Then you don’t have a problem. You can make every offending piece of clutter disappear as easily as pointing your finger at it. All you need is College HUNKS’ same-day junk removal service!

Only a small fraction of junk is actually trash. College HUNKS, being the eco-conscious operation that it is, knows this. That’s why they are allied with Bridging, a local nonprofit that furnishes homes for people transitioning out of homelessness. That’s why they also supply old appliances, mattresses, and other surprisingly useful things to recycling firms.

Just think. That broken washing machine that’s been collecting dust in your basement since the Carter administration? It could become patio furniture someday. How inspiring!

GENERAL LABOR

Is “heavy lifting” not among your uncountably large number of talents? Then you still don’t have a problem. College HUNKS’ professional movers’ Herculean physiques are at your disposal.

Temporarily relocate all your furniture to your garage in preparation for a housewide reflooring. Dismantle the rotting, decrepit treehouse in your backyard before another family of raccoons decides to move into it. Do a third thing that you do not relish doing without actually having to do it yourself. College HUNKS’ general labor gets the job done.

THERE’S A NEW HUNK IN TOWN

“I used to be a lawyer, practicing at a big law firm in Chicago,” said Ryan Spille. “After a point, I’d reviewed so many documents that I felt like my soul was leaving my body. I wanted to do something I could be passionate about. Something that genuinely helps people, like the youth mentoring I do in my church community. More than anything else, I hoped to do it in my home state. My wife is also from Minnesota, and she wanted to raise our five kids here just as much as I did.

“Honest. Uniformed. Nice. Knowledgeable. Service. While looking for business opportunities five years ago, I discovered I like everything College HUNKS stands for. I realized how much good it would let me do – not just by eliminating stress and inconvenience from people’s lives while they’re dealing with some of the most stressful and inconvenient obstacles life can lay in their paths, but also by helping young men find real purpose and aim.

“Now that I’ve acquired a second location, I’m doing even more to share the principles and values that help our team members get ahead. We’ve even started a book club together, where we sit down every week to discuss life improvement classics like Atomic Habits and Extreme Ownership. It’s all part of our commitment to being the best versions of ourselves – a real breath of fresh air in an industry that’s notorious for attracting characters who I’ll charitably describe as ‘unreliable.’

“I’m so grateful to be where I am. But I’m not complacent. My goal is to make College HUNKS the largest business of its kind in the Twin Cities, one happy customer at a time.”

NAUTICAL BOWLS HITS THE ROAD

MAPLE GROVE’S FAVORITE BOWLS ARE ROLLING INTO SUMMER EVENTS, FESTIVALS, AND COMMUNITY GATHERINGS.

“Meeting people where summer already happens.”

There are certain things that just belong at a Minnesota summer event: sunscreen, lawn chairs, kids in jerseys, someone asking where the bathrooms are, and at least one person wondering if dinner can be cold, colorful, and covered in fresh fruit. This summer, Nautical Bowls is answering that question on wheels.

The Maple Grove superfood bowl shop is expanding beyond its storefront with a new food truck, bringing colorful açaí and superfood bowls to festivals, sports tournaments, neighborhood gatherings, and community events across the area.

For owners Bryant Bohlig and Matt Meyer, the move is about more than growth. It is about meeting people where summer already happens and creating a fresh, energetic food experience that feels right at home.

Known for its bright tropical atmosphere and nutrient-packed menu, Nautical Bowls specializes

in açaí and superfood bowls that are plant-based, gluten-free, dairy-free, and made with organic ingredients.

“Our brand is centered around a healthy, active lifestyle,” says Bryant. “We provide a delicious, nutritious option for people who want something that fuels them without slowing them down. It’s filling, energizing, and a fun new experience, especially for people trying an açaí bowl for the first time.”

The Maple Grove location has become a go-to stop for health-conscious families, athletes, and busy professionals looking for a quick meal that still feels fresh and satisfying. Signature creations like the Nauti Bowl and Paddle Bowl combine fruit bases with granola, fresh fruit, nut butters, and superfood toppings.

Now, with the food truck, that same experience can show up where people are already gathering.

“The food truck is a great way to reach new customers,” says Bryant. “A lot of people we meet at events have never tried Nautical Bowls before, so it becomes both a first impression and a marketing opportunity for our brand. It also gives us a chance to introduce refreshing menu items that are perfect for summer.”

The mobile concept fits a season filled with concerts, baseball games, lake days, festivals, and families looking for something light, colorful, and energizing along the way.

“One of the best parts about Nautical Bowls is our team,” says Bryant. “Whether it’s a signature bowl or build-your-own option, we make sure everyone leaves with something they love.”

Whether customers visit the Maple Grove storefront or catch the truck at a summer event, Nautical Bowls hopes to bring a little sunshine and a delicious bowl wherever summer takes them.

IT’S THE SILENCE

INSIDE CHALET BLU, A HANDCRAFTED RETREAT HIDDEN IN WISCONSIN’S BLUE HILLS

The first thing you notice at Chalet Blu isn’t the towering black ceiling or the dramatic wall of windows stretching toward the trees.

It’s the silence.

The kind interrupted only by crackling bonfires, distant loons, wind through white pines, and snow falling softly beyond the glass.

Tucked into Wisconsin’s Blue Hills, the striking black chalet feels less like a rental property and more like a dream pulled into reality through sheer determination. Before the dramatic great room, oversized spa shower, and cozy nights under the stars, there was only raw land, towering pine trees, and a camper parked in the woods.

For Lanee and Jason Noble, Chalet Blu became far more than a construction project. The property had long been part of Lanee’s family history. Her uncle Bob once dreamed of building a retirement home there after falling in love with the land’s towering white pines. After his passing, and following the recent loss of Jason’s parents, the couple found themselves thinking deeply about legacy, family, and creating something meaningful together.

So they bought the land from Lanee’s parents and began building.

What followed was nearly a year of balancing remote jobs while living off-grid in a camper through construction season. Before the well was operational, water had to be hauled manually using a kiddie pool in the back of Jason’s truck, pumps, and countless refill trips to her parents’ house.

Generator fuel runs became routine. Even the porta-potty cleaning truck became an oddly celebrated event.

And somehow, those difficult months became some of their favorite memories.

Most nights ended around a bonfire fueled by cleared brush and leftover construction scraps. Deer wandered past the camper in the mornings. Coyotes, frogs, owls, and distant wolves filled the night air beneath impossibly bright stars.

“EVERY CHALLENGE, EVERY SETBACK, AND EVERY IMPROVISED SOLUTION WAS LITERALLY BUILT INTO THE WALLS AND CEILINGS OF THE HOME.”

“We worked harder last summer than we ever had before,” Lanee says. “It was one of the most fulfilling and memorable times of our lives.”

The spirit of that experience is embedded throughout Chalet Blu, especially inside the now-iconic great room. The dramatic black interior ceiling nearly didn’t happen after multiple coats of paint, mounting frustration, and contractors unwilling to finish the towering tongue-and-groove installation high above the floor.

Eventually, the project became a full family effort involving scaffolding, hand-stained pine boards, and relatives climbing nearly to the peak while Jason cut boards below.

Today, that black ceiling has become one of the chalet’s defining features.

But what guests seem to love most isn’t just the architecture. It’s the feeling.

Chalet Blu invites people to slow down. To linger over coffee in the morning. To spend a little longer around the fire at night.

Days unfold through hikes in the Blue Hills, skiing at Christie Mountain, local wineries, and classic Wisconsin supper clubs before returning to crackling fires and complete stillness.

“It’s a step back in time,” Lanee says. “Where nature sets the rhythm of the day and people still help each other without expecting anything in return.”

And maybe that’s what makes Chalet Blu unforgettable.

Not just the soaring windows. Not the handcrafted details. Not even the stars overhead.

It’s the reminder that places like this still exist.

The First Step Is Feeling Comfortable

Helping clients slow down, reset, and reconnect with their overall well-being.

Kim Berger, Owner

For many people, the hardest part of trying something new in wellness is not the service itself. It is walking through the door for the first time.

That is especially true when the service is personal, unfamiliar, or something people may have questions about before scheduling. At LifeCleanse of Anoka, owner Kim Berger understands that. Her goal is to make the experience feel calm, private, educational, and supportive from the beginning.

“We spend time with each new client getting to know them and understanding their goals,” says Kim.

Located in Anoka, LifeCleanse specializes in colon hydrotherapy along with restorative services designed to support relaxation, digestion, and vitality. While conversations around gut health and holistic wellness have become more common, LifeCleanse has quietly served the community for nearly two decades.

Kim first experienced the business as a longtime client. When the previous owner retired, she chose to continue the work, carrying forward the caring philosophy that had made LifeCleanse meaningful to her.

That personal connection now shapes the wellness center. The atmosphere is peaceful and welcoming, with a focus on comfort, privacy, and individualized attention. For first-time clients who may feel unsure about colon hydrotherapy, the staff explains the process, answers questions, and creates an experience that feels respectful rather than intimidating.

The center’s philosophy is rooted in proactive wellness. Services include colon hydrotherapy, SOLET therapy, which combines sound, oxygen, light, and energy therapies, and other restorative treatments intended to support relaxation and balance.

For Kim, the goal is not a quick fix. It is to help clients think more intentionally about caring for themselves.

“Many clients have reported changes in other areas of the body, and the only thing they are doing differently is implementing colon hydrotherapy,” says Kim.

As interest in personalized wellness grows, businesses like LifeCleanse reflect a shift toward self-care that is more consistent, mindful, and individualized. Clients come for many reasons, but the heart of the experience remains the same: helping people feel informed, supported, and connected to their well-being.

“At LifeCleanse, we truly value our clients’ health,” says Kim. “We are here to support them in their wellness journey. Colon hydrotherapy can be a great tool in their tool belt.”

For LifeCleanse of Anoka, that support is what matters most. Where relationships and trust still matter deeply, Kim hopes clients leave feeling comfortable, informed, and encouraged to keep caring for themselves with intention.

The 10% Target Mindset

Jen Cohen ON THE PRACTICE OF ASKING FOR WHAT YOU WANT

Winnipeg in the winter, and a 17-year-old waits 45 minutes in the cold for Keanu Reeves. Her fingers are numb. She is not there for an autograph. She is there to ask him to appear in her audition tape for MuchMusic, Canada’s MTV. When he finally agrees, she writes her number on a gum wrapper with a borrowed lip liner.

He calls days later.

That 17-year-old was Jen Cohen — fitness expert, host of the Habits & Hustle podcast, and best-selling author. She has built a career on the premise her frostbitten afternoon proved. She calls the practice the 10% Target: 10 attempts at whatever you want most in life.

The premise is simple. Most people never make one attempt. Almost nobody makes two. The math works in favor of the person who keeps going.

The top-rated Habits & Hustle podcast has logged hundreds of conversations with high performers and the people who study what the body does to the mind. Her TEDx talk, The Secret to Getting Anything You Want in Life, has traveled widely inside Fortune 500 sales-training rooms. On the Share the Lifestyle podcast, Cohen sits down to share the working rules that are the foundation of her latest book, Bigger, Better, Bolder.

“You have to be the CEO of your own life.”

1 2

MAKE TEN ATTEMPTS

The door opens, or another door does. The unmade attempt and the refused one leave you in the same place — except one of them teaches you something.

STACK THE DECK

Cohen frames her habits as a wager: How do I stack the deck so I win more than I lose? The workout happens first, and the food decisions follow. The email follow-up gets sent, and the answer arrives. The choices compound in a single direction.

3

DISCIPLINE IS A PRACTICED SKILL, NOT AN INHERITANCE

No one is born with it. The people who look disciplined are running a routine they have rehearsed long enough that it no longer feels like effort. The reps are the skill. Miss them, and the skill fades, the same as any other.

4

SELF-TALK ONLY WORKS WHEN THE BODY BACKS IT UP

Confidence does not arrive by repeating the word. It arrives after the body has done the thing — the workout finished, the cold walk endured, the email sent. The mind takes its cues from what the body proves it can do. Talk follows action, not the other way around.

5

NEVER MISS A MONDAY

The first decision sets the slope of the rest. Skip the Monday workout, and the rest of the week tends to follow. Hold the line on Monday, and the slope tilts the other way.

Spacious floorplans. Delicious meals. Personalized support. That’s our Tradition.
