LIFESTYLE LETTER
A focus on Health and Wellness For many of us, this time of year is full of excitement! It presents us with a reset, new horizons, improvements and goals to pursue! We approached this issue of Manhattan City Lifestyle from a mindset of not supplying quick fixes to check boxes in the short term, but valuing what is sustainable over the long haul. We wanted to provide inspiration for making lasting, realistic, holistic, long-term improvements to your physical, emotional and mental health. Start by reading this month's inspirational feature story on Alexis Sweeney, the creator and founder of the Silhouette™ by Alexis, then be sure to check out our roundup of local Manhattan businesses that will help you be your Best Self in 2024! Remember when it comes to anything in life - business, finance, food, home or personal health - it’s not what you do some days that moves the needle: it’s what you do MOST days. For instance, taking a vacation every day would be financially and practically unfeasible, but taking a trip a few times a year is doable! Having an amazing steak dinner with a few cocktails or a bottle of wine every night for dinner isn't the best for your health, but doing so once in a while is fine! So, plan that vacation AND work to establish more regular rest in your work week. Join a fitness club or gym AND enjoy that meal you've been wanting to try at Marian's in Greenwich Village. It's not what you do some days - it's what you do most days that will lead to a more peaceful, fulfilling and fabulous year. Here's to YOU - we're rooting for you.

From Outside the Kitchen CHEF CHRISTIAN AND HIS LOVE OF FARMERS MARKETS
When the chef leaves the restaurant and explores the local farmers market...you'll find they let go of the "chef whites" and become much more relaxed. It's rich with one thing in common, giving back to our community may it be food or crafts. I myself am a big fan of farmers markets and the conversations to be had there. I ended up spending a cold Fall Saturday morning at the Union Square Greenmarket and here's what we learned about this small business owner. Funny enough, we worked together when he opened his first restaurant. He's someone I find rather strong with such passion and understanding for food. Christian has grown since we last saw each other and it really shows. When walking into Marians you are welcomed with warmth and bright eyes. Everyone is eager as you are to see what this spot is all about. 1. WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND AS A CHEF? WHERE DID YOUR LOVE FOR COOKING BEGIN?? I started in restaurants when I was 14 as a dishwasher in a small beach town in North Carolina. Fast forward many years later I moved to New York to take professional cooking seriously, studied at CIA (The Culinary Institute of America) then worked under David Bouley, Eric Ripert, Christian Delouvrier, Daniel Humm and spent years cooking and learning in France. Now I head a team at Marian’s in Greenwich Village! 2. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CHEF? I’ve always loved cooking - growing up in Germany introduced me to various cuisines and inspired me to take things seriously as I began my career. My grandma - Marian - also pushed me to pursue what made me happy. 3. MARIAN’S NAME COMES FROM WHERE? My Grandmother who impacted my life and showed me around the kitchen.

4. WHAT DREW YOU TO SHOP AT THE UNION SQUARE MARKET? HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO? WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE VENDORS AND WHY? We always try to use produce and proteins that are as local as possible. It also gives us the ability to add new and exciting menu options based on what looks great at the market and what’s in season. It just makes sense. I try to head to the market on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays as they are the best. Halal Pastures is my favorite vendor, they’re incredibly kind and have a wonderful variety of produce each week. They also work with chefs and try to grow different products for you, and can harvest it at a certain size for your dishes. They are truly great. 5. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON SUSTAINABILITY AND ORGANIC FARMING? ARE YOUR INGREDIENTS ORGANIC? We want to use organic as much as possible - you can actually taste the difference in the food. Having sustainable vendors is also reassuring to know our food supply is being farmed and harvested thoughtfully. 6. WHAT IS YOUR SIGNATURE DISH? WHAT IS THE MOST POPULAR AT MARIAN’S? HEARD YOUR SMASH BURGER COMPETES WITH IN-N-OUT BURGER BECAUSE OF THE SAUCE! Our scallops and chicken are our most popular dishes. But yes, the burger is insane. In-N-Out doesn’t come close to our French fries though. You’ll have to come give us your take on the burger, we think it's the best out there. CONTINUED >

"It is his firm belief that really good food does not have to be presumptuous, but rather, can be approachable and fun."
7. WHO IS A CHEF THAT REMINDS YOU OF WHAT YOU DO AND HELPS YOU KEEP GOING IN THE KITCHEN? David Bouley - he helped me begin my career and was a great mentor to not only me but many great chefs in the city. 8. WHAT’S NEXT? ARE YOU OPENING A NEW RESTAURANT AND WHAT CAN WE EXPECT IT TO BE LIKE? We’re opening a wine/raw bar right next door to Marian’s, called “Perle". It will be a smaller, more intimate spot- great for dates or wine lovers looking for a fun, well-curated selection. We’re super excited. Hoping to open in mid-January if not sooner! CONTINUED >

"I wish I knew there was a way to actually enjoy elevating your heart rate, challenging your balance + strength + flexibility all at once."
1. Please introduce yourself: My name is Alexis Sweeney, I am the creator and founder of the Silhouette™ by Alexis Platform which encompasses a global virtual studio and on-demand APP.
2. What is Silhouette by Alexis? The Silhouette Method teaches you how to initiate every move from your abdominals and fuel it with your breath to build your strongest Silhouette ever while alleviating tension and stress throughout your body. Low-impact yet high-intensity, the platform offers versatility, mindfulness, and a new understanding of how to make the most of your time and take your workouts much deeper right from home. The formats include Deep Pilates Flows, Barre Sculpt, Power Dance Cardio, and Sil Stripped (no music, deep Pilates + breathing exercises).
3. How many gyms in Manhattan are you teaching at and what types of classes? I launched a new partnership with Equinox in October 2023 in the NYC region and am currently teaching the signature Silhouette™ Barre Sculpt class at 10 different Equinox locations. That is the only place to catch me consistently in person, however, we teach Live Virtual classes in the Live Zoom Studio 6 days a week as well. A few times a year I throw special in-person community events throughout Manhattan.
4. Explain breath work and how it changes the body…does it help the mind too? Absolutely! Not only does the practice of diaphragmatic breathing help you to connect to your deepest core muscles, but it also allows you to calm the nervous system and “enter your zone” as I say. These routines are meant to empower you from the inside out, strengthening you both mentally AND physically. CONTINUED >

5. What was it like having scoliosis? How did you overcome this challenge? Looking back here now many years later I am proud of it! But at the time it was a struggle for sure. I was so uncomfortable in my own skin. I was surviving, and not thriving. It wasn’t until I started to LOVE working out and learning my body and helping so many others to do the same that I decided to celebrate what makes us unique, instead of hiding it. You’ll often hear me say, “No 2 silhouettes are the same” and I want to celebrate that!
6. If you could give yourself a younger version any advice what would it be? I wish I knew I didn’t have to “torture” myself to look and feel my best. The Silhouette perspective is that tuning into your body is a gift, and it should always feel that way. It’s a moment of self-love and self-respect. I developed severe body dysmorphia at a young age, hating what was reflected in the mirror. I wish I knew there was a way to actually enjoy elevating your heart rate, challenging your balance + strength + flexibility all at once. I wish I learned to love what makes me unique instead of trying so hard to look like everyone else.
7. What do you love about Manhattan? This city inspires me! I grew up in Southern California and so the drastic shift of energy in NYC has always called my name.
8. We understand you have an app? Yes! “Silhouette By Alexis” has over 400+ of the best low-impact high-intensity workouts filmed all over the world, accessible anywhere. The app is streaming in over 14 countries worldwide. Some of the categories include Barre Sculpt, Deep Pilates Flows, Prenatal, Travel, Filter by time (10/20/30/40 minutes), filter by muscle group, programs, challenges, a virtual retreat, plus a weekly schedule made for you by me. The platform also offers the Live Zoom Studio offering weekly classes.

Top with chia or flax seeds for an extra omega-3 boost, nuts or seeds for added protein, or sliced fruit for additional vitamins and fiber. Including a hint of turmeric or ginger can aid in digestion and has anti-inflammatory properties. Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables can aid in cellular repair and gut health, and smoothie bowls are a delicious way to incorporate more into your day.
