Children & Pets Issue!

The older I get, the more I realize family is the true wealth in this realm. Beyond family and close friends, nothing else really matters. Family, with its unwavering support, unconditional love, and shared experiences, holds a wealth that transcends any material or monetary value. It’s why we’re here, it’s what drives us, and it’s what keeps us turning home every day.

The Children + Pets issue is always one of my favorites, because there are few things that measure up to the immense joy that children bring to our lives, and the significant impact they make on our families and communities.

Children are not merely the hope for a brighter tomorrow; they are the foundation upon which our society stands. Their innocence, curiosity, and boundless potential have the power to shape the world in ways we can only imagine. Our children represent our hardest work and greatest investment, and we are happy to highlight the best for Manhattan’s children in this issue.

Beyond children, pets have a profound impact on our lives, bringing a sense of companionship that can be a transformative experience for children and adults alike. Pets provide us with unconditional love, and the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop essential life skills in a nurturing environment. The bond between children and their furry or feathery companions not only fosters qualities such as empathy, responsibility, and companionship, but also creates a deep and meaningful connection.

I was grateful to have my childhood pets Lucy, KC, and Maggie. I learned a lot in my early days about love from those creatures. I had two Corgi/ Blue Heeler dogs named Mo and Philly when I moved to Manhattan that genuinely helped take care of me in my twenties and thirties. Then, like a true gift from God, it is my pleasure to now share a home with my cat Dolly, and my legendary Olde English Bulldog, Get Happy Mister. He’s the iconic dog on the cover of the 2022 Children + Pets issue!

Children and pets both rely on us for care and love, and caring for them gives our lives greater meaning and fulfillment. Our care, attention, and intention shapes how they are raised and who they become. We hope this issue inspires you to pour a little extra love into the children and pets in your life this month.

We hope you enjoy this issue!

Warm Regards,  TYLER JACKSON,

A Weekend In Alma

VISIT THE FLINT HILLS’ SCENIC CITY OF NATIVE STONE AND STAY IN AN 1898 SCHOOLHOUSE

It’s a beautiful and calm morning down on Missouri Street in Alma, Kansas. This picturesque small town, known as the City of Stone, captivates visitors with its historic stone and brick buildings, forming a charming downtown. Nestled in the scenic heart of the Flint Hills, Alma, with its population of 802, offers an ideal weekend getaway just a half-hour drive from Manhattan.

Driving south into Alma on Highway 99, it’s hard not to marvel at the natural beauty around you. In fact, our adventure began with a scenic drive along Skyline Drive, located just south of town. This gravel road leads all the way to Paxico,

revealing breathtaking vistas, creek crossings, and the opportunity to witness captivating wildlife amidst the prairie landscape.  Situated within the rolling hills of green native grass and scattered valleys of cedar trees, the entire area exudes a beauty that is awe-inspiring. Rolling back into downtown, there’s some busy hustle and bustle outside the Post Office as we wait for The Antique Emporium to open. A fun place “for the seekers,” there’s always something unique to find here. Across the street is El Corral Mexican Restaurant, which has stellar ratings from both Google and our staff photographer,

Tim Sigle. Just a short distance up the street lies Pacheco Beef, a fantastic local destination where you can savor the finest Flint Hills grown beef. Then, three miles north back towards the Interstate, awaits the newly opened showroom of the world-famous Alma Creamery. Since 1946, they have been making some nibblin’ good cheese of all varieties, and recently, they just opened a brand-new tasting room.

Located inside the Plaza of the Flint Hills travel center, at the conjunction of Highway 99 and I-70’s Exit 325, is a spacious new sampling room, and the newest location to find Alma Cheese. They offer everything from blocks of Kansas-shaped cheese and original cheese curds, to specialty-flavored curds and summer sausage. They even have several flavors of unique curd flavors, like Mediterranean, jalapeño, and dill. Everything here is hand-crafted, fresh, and glorious. It’s a must visit.

Skyline Drive

A half mile north of the Plaza of the Flint Hills, and just a few steps away from the Road To Oz, Highway 99, lies the true cornerstone of your weekend visit to Alma. Originally constructed in 1898 as the Hinerville Schoolhouse, this meticulously transformed one-room school now serves as a gorgeous luxury retreat. Whether you’re seeking a romantic rendezvous or a memorable family getaway, this captivating property enchants guests with its limestone composition, intact bell tower, and abundant space to explore both indoors and outdoors. Delight in the lush garden, bask on the expansive deck, and revel in the freedom to spread out and fully enjoy your visit.

As you step inside, prepare to be awestruck by the painstaking renovation with exquisite attention to detail from the very first moment. The thoughtfully curated interior design, with its beautiful neutral-toned color scheme, seamlessly blends contemporary flair with the cherished originality of the space.

Every glance is fruitful and stunning. The conjoined open kitchen and living room immediately creates a cozy atmosphere. Above, the overhead loft is nestled beneath a gorgeous ceiling of original, exposed wood. The school’s 125-year-old chalkboard adorns the wall near the entrance, while the original hardwood floors exude timeless charm. The school’s infirmary-turned-bathroom is highlighted with exposed limestone and modern fixtures. Converted jacket closets serve as bedrooms, and the loft offers additional space and comfort, along with an extra

restroom. With the recent additions of central air and a limestone-lined gas fireplace, this remarkable retreat ensures year-round comfort.

Michelle Gray, a former schoolteacher turned interior designer from Illinois, could have never imagined owning and transforming a property like this. Following her children to the Flint Hills, she stumbled upon the opportunity to turn her newfound dream into reality when the schoolhouse became available for sale. After owning it for a few years and tending to the outdoor spaces, she embarked on an exciting adventure of renovating the interior, bringing her vision to life.

Drawing upon her extensive background as an interior designer and enriched by her recent antiquing experiences nationwide, Michelle has skillfully curated a home that is both grand and distinctly original. Paying homage to the schoolhouse’s heritage and the picturesque Flint Hills, while subtly nodding to her beloved home state of Illinois, she has masterfully blended styles to create a vibrant living space. Michelle’s remarkable transformation of this historic building is a testament to her vision and talent. Looking ahead, she envisions further enhancing the outdoor area, with a long-term goal of transforming it into a wedding venue, where unforgettable celebrations can unfold.

The city of Alma and Wabaunsee County is a warm and welcoming area with friendly people, and the perfect place for a day trip or a quick getaway. If you’ve never been to the City of Native Stone, you’ve got to make it happen. It’s worth the road trip.

Backyard Chickens

Everything you need to get started on your backyard coop.

Chickens have become increasingly popular as pets in both suburban and urban areas during the last 20 years. Backyard chickens may seem to be an unsuspecting animal to keep as a pet but the tried and true egg producers are back in fashion as food costs are soaring and families are looking for more food independence in light of recent supply chain shortages. There’s a lot to like about raising chickens in your backyard. Surprisingly, chickens are relatively low maintenance. And bonus – unlike dogs, they don’t need to be bathed or groomed, and they don’t shed on your clothes or require training. Oh and bonus – they make you breakfast.

The eggs from backyard chickens are the best—tastier and fresher than any store-bought eggs. Much of the day, the birds entertain themselves, picking at grass, worms, beetles, and all of the good things that go into making those delicious farm eggs. Plus, with their keen eye for insect pests, chickens make for great gardening companions.

Chickens can provide family companionship, fun, entertainment, sustainable fresh food, and plenty of poop that gardeners prize as a natural fertilizer/composting material. Could backyard chickens be the perfect pet/producer to add to your home?

OUTDOOR LIVING | LIFE + CULTURE 28

Backyard Chicken Q&A:

HOW MANY CHICKENS SHOULD I KEEP?

Chickens are sociable creatures, so plan to keep three to six birds at least. With this amount, you’ll always have a steady supply of eggs, since an adult hen lays about two eggs every three days, on average. Local ordinances also dictate how many chickens one household can keep.

HOW MUCH DOES KEEPING CHICKENS COST?

All of this costs money, of course. The materials to build and furnish a coop and a 20 x 5-foot run—including wood, fencing, and hardware—are going to set you back at least $300. If you can’t do this work yourself, you’ll also be buying skilled labor.

Overall, expect to spend between $500 and $700 when getting started depending on the size of your flock, coop and run. For prefabricated coops, expect to pay $600 or more.

WHAT KIND OF SHELTER DO THEY NEED?

Chickens need to have an enclosed coop that provides adequate space, protection from the elements and predators, and good ventilation. A modified shed, barn, or stable with an outdoor run is a good option for a coop. The outdoor run should be fully enclosed if you have predators like hawks or owls nearby. Ideally, coops are slightly elevated off the ground to prevent flooding and have windows on each side, enough nest boxes to allow several chickens to nest simultaneously, outlets for lighting, fans if they’re needed, air inlets or ventilation holes on the roof, and a concrete floor treated with a pet-safe waterproof coating that allows for easy cleaning and drainage.

Want to go the fancy route?

Search Pinterest for “chicken coop building plans” if you’re building your own or consider going the luxury route with a gorgeous custom-built coop from a company like CutestCoops.com

WHEN DO CHICKENS START LAYING EGGS?

Most hens will start laying eggs when they’re about 18 to 20 weeks old, although it may take more time for them to reach their peak output. Often, the first eggs are laid irregularly or are smaller or oddly shaped when compared with a typical egg. This is nothing to worry about! Once a cycle is established, most hens will lay one egg per day.

Kylee’s Konfectionery

A SWEET SUCCESS STORY

At just 12 years old, Kylee has already made a name for herself as the talented owner of Kylee’s Konfectionery. In February, Kylee earned the prestigious Youth Achievement Award at the Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills inaugural gala. Inspired by her parents’ culinary skills and captivating baking videos on YouTube, Kylee’s ambition to become a professional chef and baker fueled her desire to embark on this entrepreneurial journey.

From the beginning, Kylee’s parents have supported her business ambitions with one important caveat: “In our house, school work always comes first,” says Jakara, Kylee’s mom. Jakara has been alongside Kylee every step of her business journey, encouraging her creativity and managing the social media presence for Kylee’s Konfectionery, which displays photos of Kylee’s repertoire of sweet treats.

The busiest time for Kylee’s business is Valentine’s Day, when she creates delectable chocolate-covered strawberries and breakable hearts: heart-shaped chocolate boxes designed to be cracked open, revealing delightful candies within. Her customers rave about the taste, quality, and presentation of her creations.

Looking to the future, Kylee hopes to expand her offerings to include cupcakes, cookies, and more. The young entrepreneur also has excellent advice for kids who want to start their own business: “I would tell them to start small, don’t rush it, [and] just be patient with it. You’ll get better as the time goes on.”

You can order your own delicious confections by emailing kyleeskonfectionery@gmail.com or messaging Kylee’s Konfectionery on Facebook

CANINE BLOOD DONOR PROGRAM

Just like people, dogs have diseases or injuries that require blood transfusions. Many canine patients receive transfusions and dogs enrolled in the Canine Blood Donor Program provide the blood products for them. The demand for blood products for our patients increases every year.

The Veterinary Health Center needs volunteer blood donors to ensure that every patient in need can be treated. Healthy dogs that meet the requirements can safely donate a unit of blood every eight weeks!
