As I sit here, I ponder what to say for the September/Style Issue’s Lifestyle Letter. I guess I usually start each letter by talking about the weather. It's easy. It’s always a good ice breaker. On a larger scale, it’s something people have in common. You really can shoot the breeze and talk about the weather with just about anyone. While I absolutely love summer, it’s hard not to be excited that the best weather season of the year is almost upon us. Good ole Autumn. Fall. Otono en Español. You’ve got the changing of the leaves, pumpkin spice lattes, chili and cinnamon rolls, K-State & Chiefs football!
As the Style Issue continues, we’ll also get to meet Amber Jensen, a Manhattan hair stylist who found a real knack for social media strategiz ing. She offers tips on how to best maximize your online presence. Then, in honor of football season, we head to west Manhattan — to the Chiefseum!
Oh, ya! I’m sure I’ll get much sappier about all that stuff in October. The changing of seasons is often a time for a closet refresh, and September is known for its fashion and style issues in the magazine world. We are thrilled to participate in the trend this year. Styles are ever changing, and it’s always interesting to see what fresh new takes the fashion world brings us. In this issue, you get to meet Regan Amber. Gracing the cover and adorning several pages, she models a few different dresses, as well as something fun to wear on game days. Regan is an Occupational Therapist by trade, and hasn’t really modeled before, but she’s a natural! A native of Dodge City, she’s the granddaughter of Butch Gleason, the original owner of Happy, the bulldog on the cover of the August issue. She’s also my first cousin once removed!
This article takes you on a fun tour through the largest collection of Chiefs memorabilia in the world! Fashion choices can reveal a lot about our personalities, and they are a great way to express ourselves. Bring on fall in your own best style, and we will see you around town. Cats by 90!

OUR TOWN | LIFE + CULTURE Kingdom Treasures ARTICLE BY TYLER JACKSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE Take a tour of Manhattan’s Chiefseum, the World’s Largest Collection of Kansas City Memorabilia 16

“If you start a collection, pick one thing and stick with it,” says Curt. “Keep track of everything you get, as you get it! If you put stuff aside and think, ‘Oh. I’ll get that later,’ It gets out of control in a hurry! You won’t know what you have. Mostly though, just have fun with Contactit!”the Chiefseum Facebook page for a tour! facebook.com/chiefseum
What’s next for the Chiefseum? While it continues to grow, Chiefseum.com is in the works, as is world record recognition by Guinness. All the required documentation has been submitted, including a sworn video, photos, copy of the database, and proof of insurance. Curt was required to provide video evi dence of himself counting each item alongside three witnesses, two of whom had to be an elected official and/or a police officer. Kansas State Senator Tom Hawk and Riley County Police Department Director Kurt Moldrup were recruited for the task, as was Manhattan’s Bernie Haney, Curt’s “Chiefs Subject Matter Expert.” Haney has been Mitch Holthus’ statistician for over twenty years. Official word from Guinness is soon forthcoming.
Deep in the heart of a west Manhattan home lies a Kingdom-worthy treasure trove of magnificent proportions. Belonging to Curt and Becky Herrman, Chiefseum is the World’s Largest Collection of Kansas City Chiefs-related Memorabilia! In January 2021, it was granted that distinction by Official World Record (an internationally-recognized non-governmental organization) with 642 unique pieces. At press time, it holds 1,257 items and continues to grow. Organic in its founding, and growing steadily for over 50 years, the collection has been elevated to world class propor tions since the late 1960s. There’s absolutely no memorabilia allowed on the main floor, master bedroom, or basement bedroom of the home, per Becky’s rule. At the bottom of the basement stairs, the entrance to the Chiefseum has the most unsuspecting passageway. Save for a couple of items, and an angelic photo of Chiefs’ late great Derrick Thomas proclaiming “Our Guardian Angel” hanging on a plain white door, you’d have no clue what you’re about to see. As the door opens, brace yourself and watch your step: Welcome to the Chiefseum! Upon first visual, you’ll be mesmerized by the number of red and gold eclectic items to behold. A red velvet pool table, centered in the room below a Chiefs table light, will catch your first focused glance. Posters line the walls, along with an abundance of photos and auto graphs. There are concept helmets, dozens of footballs, and Super Bowl rings. Dozens of real life action figures are displayed in well-lit cases. There’s even a retro, glass bottle Pepsi machine on the far side of the room, crowned by a lit Tiffany-style Chiefs lamp that changes colors. There’s so much Chiefs gear around, it feels like you’ve arrived at One Arrowhead Drive. Heading down a hallway lined with cardboard cut outs of Chiefs greats, you’ll enter the bedroom, where Chiefs gear is prohibited. Back into the main room, you’ll journey around clockwise, inspecting each detail from floor-to-ceiling, while receiving the grand ole tour. A self-professed storyteller, Curt is quite adept in explaining the history and context behind each item, providing the reasoning as to why each item is displayed where it is in the room. Each time you look in a different direction, you’ll see something new. No item is duplicated in the Chiefseum, and trad ing cards are largely excluded, with the exception of about 20 cards that are rare, autographed, or plated in 2k gold. Packages of multiple items, such as pencils and poker chip sets, are counted individually. There’s also another rule: there are no current players in the collection, with the exception of Patrick Mahomes. Curt’s eye for detail stands out above everything else. Beyond expertly narrating each and every tour with expertise, he keeps meticulous archives. He maintains a database, which logs a detailed record and photo of each item, and keeps metrics like total count and uniqueness organized.

TREND SETTER | LOCAL SERVICES Hairstylist @amberjensenhairstylist Amber Jensen 30

Although she’s only 25, Amber already owns her own hair salon within Allure Salon Studios. Hailing from the tiny town of Washington, KS, an hour north of Manhattan, Amber moved to the Little Apple to attend Bellus Academy two years ago. Amber is phenomenal at her craft, and she radiates warmth, kindness, and positivity. However, in an industry heavily depen dent upon word-of-mouth referrals, she was immediately at a disadvantage, as she did not have a network in Manhattan. Through our early conversations, I learned that she started using social media to market her business early in her career. “I saw the importance of marketing myself and noticed the result almost rightAmberaway.”currently posts almost daily on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. In 2020, one of her posts, focusing on common mis takes people make when trying to create flatiron curls, went viral with over 400k views. Due to her success building a customer base (including myself!) through social media, I asked her to share what she’s learned about social media marketing.
31| CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/MANHATTANSEPTEMBER 2022
Within just a few minutes of searching local hashtags (#mhklove, #mhkhair), I found exactly what I was looking for: a local stylist with a compatible sense of style and humor. Her photos showcased her talent, but her videos highlighted her lighthearted personality. With a few clicks, I made my first appointment with Amber Jensen.
Here is Amber’s top advice for small businesses:
• “Follow marketing experts for advice, especially when you’re getting started.”
• “Watch Reels [on Instagram] for inspiration. I listen to a Reel and think about how I can relate it to the beauty industry.”
When I moved back to Manhattan in late-2020, I turned to Instagram for the dreaded task of finding a new hairstylist. As a budget-con scious person, I wanted to find a stylist who offered low-mainte nance, lived-in color. As an introvert, I wanted to find someone who would not make small talk a painful experience.
• “Don’t advertise that you aren’t taking new clients. People move away, especially in a place like Manhattan, so you always want new clients flowing in.”
• “Partner with other local businesses. In 2021, I partnered with Revelry Thread Co, Manhattan Brewing Company, ZL Smoothie, and Acme Gift for a promotion on Small Business Saturday. It benefits me and other businesses.”
• “Authenticity is super popular. People want a relationship [with a business or content creator] more than anything. That’s led me to share a little more about my personal life. When I first started posting, it was all business, extreme ly professional, perfectly curated. But, the market has changed. Since Covid, people are craving relationships.”
• “Local community is way more important than number of likes and views. Who is viewing your content is important. The quality of the content is more important than quantity.”
• “Specialize. No one wants a jack of all trades. Customers are all looking for someone who specializes in what they’re looking for."
