As summer begins to wind down and the school year commences — as told by the increased traffic in our little town — the carefree days of slower mornings and time adventuring is generally exchanged for a much more packed schedule. School, sports, club activities, work, a full season of K-State football each Saturday: things are about to get really busy. Even though summers tend to progressively feel like they fly by the older we get, as do the years, the simple pleasures of summer never grow old. Although the routine of school for our children, and largely ourselves, is often a welcome friend by the time August rolls around, saying goodbye to summer is always a little bittersweet. It’s nice not having to wear a coat, or a stocking cap, or start your car 10 minutes before you leave the house. I cannot stand the thought of driving down a snowy highway or shoveling ice off my windshield & driveway! I like not seeing icebergs in the river! Although I do love a lot about those seasons, I’m going to enjoy these last days of summer and soak it all in. The heat, humidity, warm water, the bugs — all of it! In honor of the final few “dog days of summer,” our August issue is dedicated to the coolest members of our community — children and pets! They both have a way of making us feel special, and their loyalty and sense of wonder is simply refreshing. In this issue, we are highlighting a couple of Manhattan children who are literally world class in what they do. We also wanted to share a few of our go-to spots to enjoy with kids and our furry companions. We’ve got some "Kidd" friendly recipes! Finally, we take you to the office, where you get to meet some of the best co-workers you can find! Enjoy the warm weather and this month’s publication! When it comes to a co-worker, no one can beat the companionship of an office dog. Big or small, hyper or lazy, it’s always better when your closest work partners have fur. The English Bulldog shown on the cover, Get Happy Mister, or just Happy, is one of the office dogs of Manhattan City Lifestyle, alongside Editor Heather’s Pomeranian, Mila! The dogs you’re about to meet are some of Manhattan’s coolest office dogs!

Few office dogs have more personality than Riley at Cat Cans. Born in 2015 and weighing around 80 pounds, Riley is a beautiful Golden Retriever. Always sporting a friendly smile, she’s been going to the office since the moment she came to live with Matt and Aricca Wallace. “She was actually our son Marcus’ 12th birthday gift. However, she’s been coming to the office with us since the first day,” says Aricca. She lays on the floor or sits in her human chair, and greets every person that walks through the front door. We have customers that meet her when they come into the office, and always come back by to give her treats.” Aricca further adds, “She is an instant stress reliever. She knows when we’re in a stressful situation, and she will come over and put a paw on you like, ‘It’s ok, mom!'” At the end of her day, Riley knows when it’s time to go home. “She loves going to work, but when it comes to 5 o'clock, she knows knows exactly when it’s time to go home.”

The bloodline runs deep in this quad of office dogs at Diamond Roofing. Belonging to Marc & Monica Cameron, "the Diamond Doodles" are named after characters from the movie The Sandlot. Benny is Jet’s dad, and they’re Goldendoodles. George (Herman Ruth) is Baby Ruth’s dad, and they’re Maltese Poodles. At 11 and 10 years old, respectively, Benny and Jet are the larger of the four, and the leaders of the gang. George and Baby Ruth, four year and four months old, are more rowdy — especially the little one! “You never know who’s going to walk through the door. They definitely stay together quite well,” says Marc. The dogs are part of the larger Diamond Roofing family. Company foreman, Rueben Balderas, has the mother of Baby Ruth, while Monica’s mom, Patricia Gwaltney, has Isabelle, which is Jet’s mom/Benny’s wife. Then, to round it out, Monica’s brother, and company President, Kevin (Gwaltney) has the sister to Isabelle. With this crew, it truly is a family thing at Diamond Roofing! CONTINUED >

Colbert Hills

Colbert Hills is one of the premier golf courses in the entire state of Kansas, and on certain days, you can find a premier office dog! Meet Lexi — a 60 pound, 18 month old Boxer. She belongs to Colbert Hills’ Director of Golf Course Operations, Matthew Gourlay, and she loves the days she gets to hit the links. “It helps our team morale, which is nice,” says Matt. “When she’s out on the course, she interacts with golfers, and it helps increase moods. Also, Boxers are kinda hyper, and it wears her out. It makes her not-so-hyper around my four year old at home.” When asked if she ever gets in the way, he laughed as he says, “She sometimes gets in the way of mowers!” “There are days I have to do certain tasks on the greens — where the grass is an eighth of an inch thick — and I have to put her on a leash in those moments. She’s good with carts, and she will pick up balls occasionally. She’s just a joy to have around.”

The best way to encourage children to develop healthy eating habits is to focus on creativity and exploration in the kitchen. Healthy cooking does not have to be fussy or complicated. This was the advice we received from the incredible Dr. Tanda Kidd, Department Head of the K-State Department of Food, Nutrition, Dietetics and Health. Much of her research focuses on childhood obesity prevention and health-promoting behaviors in children and adolescents. Elementary-aged kids tend to be picky eaters, but this age group is also more willing than teens to get in the kitchen with their parents. “This is a great time to reinforce nutrition messages, and for kids to explore with recipes and try new food items,” says Dr. Kidd. This is also a great age to show kids that they can put a little effort into food preparation, rather than expecting that food always comes fully prepared. Dr. Kidd provided us with some simple, healthy recipes that we hope you’ll try with your kids. We hope you’ll even consider experimenting with a new ingredient or two. Tailor these recipes to your dietary needs and tastes. Vegetarian? Omit the meat. Dislike mushrooms? Swap in a veggie or try out a new-to-you mushroom from the Farmers’ Market. Have fun and happy eatin’!

E-Z PIZZA Makes 8 servings on a 12-inch crust

Ingredients: • ½ jar (7 ounces) of pizza sauce • 1 pre-made 12-inch thin pizza crust (Editor’s note: If you would like to make your own sauce and crust, I recommend this recipe: minimalistbaker.com/ the-best-gluten-free-pizza-crust-sauce) • ½ cup chopped green pepper • ½ cup sliced fresh mushrooms • ¼ cup chopped or sliced onions • 15 slices of turkey pepperoni • 1 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese Directions: 1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. 2. Spread sauce evenly over unbaked pizza crust. 3. Layer green pepper, mushrooms, onions, and turkey pepperoni evenly over the sauce. Cover with shredded cheese. 4. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until cheese is melted and crust is lightly browned. 5. Enjoy!

MANHATTAN TO WORLD CLASS MANHATTAN’S 11 YEAR OLD MIKAELA CAMERON IS ONE OF THE TOP RANKED BALLERINAS IN THE WORLD FOR HER AGE

The past few years have been a challenging time for the world. Thankfully, however, the timing proved to be divine for Mikaela June Cameron, an 11 year old aspiring professional ballerina. A native of Manhattan, standing at 5’0” and 75 pounds with red hair and blue eyes, she has been on a world class trajectory since the day she was born. The daughter of Marc & Monica Cameron, Mikaela officially began her dancing career at Bate’s Dance Studio in Manhattan at the age of two. However, her pursuit actually began long before that. “She really started going to the dance studio at one week,” says Monica. “Once she started walking, she’d put on a leotard and dance in the hallway.”

At the age of five, she headed to the Kansas Ballet Academy in Topeka. In 2019, she began training at the Kansas City Ballet School, but last year, she made a huge transition when she headed to Chicago to begin her training at A&A Ballet. She was able to compete at the Youth America Grand Prix 2022 International Finals in February in Tampa, Florida, which hosted hundreds of talented student dancers, ages 9-19, from around the world. Of the three overall competition categories, Mikaela competes in “Pre-Competitive,” which is for 9-11 year olds. This year, she won the silver medal in the classical dance category at the international finals, where participants from more than 30 countries competed. (There is actually just a 0.03% chance of finishing in the top three!) At the Chicago semi-final, she was awarded with the Hope Award, which is given to the ballerinas who are considered most outstanding in both classic and contemporary disciplines. She was subsequently awarded scholarships to the Princess Grace Academy in Monaco, the John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart, Germany, and the Alberta Ballet School in Calgary, Canada. She is currently on a full scholarship this summer with the American Ballet Theatre Jackie Kennedy Onassis School in New York City. She trains at A&A in Chicago, under the guidance of Alexei Kremnev, Anna Reznik, and Ludmila Lupu. One of the best aspects about this journey for M.J., as she’s lovingly known, is that she gets to share it with her older sister, Meagan, 14. They room together with a host family in Chicago, while attending classes virtually with USD 383’s Manhattan Virtual Academy. Mikaela will be a sixth grader in the fall, and Meagan will be a freshman.

While the thought of being so far away from your children can cause apprehension, for Marc and Monica, this experience has mostly been about supporting their girls' ambitions. “The arts have a career path. We want that for them because they want that for themselves. We don’t ever want to stand in the way of their dreams,” says Marc. Before they began training in Chicago, Meagan and Mikaela attended traditional school during the day, and were driven to Kansas City for evening ballet training four days a week. Once the pandemic upended their normal routine, they took advantage of the opportunity train for ballet during the day, and attend virtual school in the evenings. That then slingshot them to a new journey in Chicago, beginning in August of 2021. “The maturity I’ve seen develop in both of them has been outstanding,” says Marc. “We’re proud of these girls and the pursuit they’re on.” Next on the docket is a trip to Europe this fall to see the schools in Monaco and Germany. Beyond that, the world is their oyster for these young, aspiring world class professional ballerinas from Manhattan!
