There’s no better time to be in Manhattan than the summertime. There’s less traffic, the town has a more casual feel, and it’s the perfect time to enjoy our multitude of options to unwind and relax. Although the “lazy days of summer” isn’t always something easily attained these days, it is so refreshing to take some time to slow down and enjoy some simple pleasures. Some of the best times of our lives involve enjoying backyard barbecues with friends, making hot dogs & s’mores by a fire pit, or spending a day on the water at Tuttle Creek. There’s just something so satisfying about eating a snow cone in the summer heat, or simply taking in the beautiful Kansas night sky with your favorite people. God Bless the summertime. I absolutely love July in Manhattan. For starters, I love the heat! (“It’s not really the heat, but the humidity!”) I love the Wamego Independence Day celebration. I love heading out to the Riley County Fair, walking through the animal barns, and seeing the arts & crafts exhibits. I’m usually down for a ride or two at the carnival. I’m usually down for a corn dog, or three! Don’t forget the Kaw Valley Rodeo! There are three exciting nights of high-quality PRCA rodeo! In this issue, we give you a bit of insight into MidFest, Manhattan’s summer music festival. We show you an awesome backyard and pool in Grand Mere. Cool off in the Kansas River as I bring you a fun article on paddling The Kaw! Then, we introduce you to Mr. Darrell Westervelt of Blueville Nursery. He’s a special guy, and he’s done good things for both Manhattan and this world. In addition to celebrating fun summertime activities, we would like to thank the men & women of the US Military for their service this Fourth of July. There is no greater sacrifice than to risk your life in order to protect others. Manhattan City Lifestyle wants to say thank you to all veterans, those still serving, and all of their loved ones for your service. I hope you are able to enjoy some of Manhattan’s many options during these hot days of summer and cherish the memories with those around you. PADDLE When it comes to outdoor activities in Manhattan, none are as nearly as satisfying as kayaking the Kansas River! The longest prairie river in the world begins in Junction City at the confluence of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers. It flows some 170-ish miles, ending at Kaw Point in Kansas City, where it joins the Missouri River. To paddle The Kaw, the first thing to consider is how fast the river’s flowing. For beginners, start near 5,000 cubic feet a second (cf/s). It’s a nice, gentle flow, with sandbars dotting throughout. At 8,000 cf/s, the sandbars disappear, and it’s going a little faster. Above 10,000 cf/s and beyond, it starts to move quite swiftly, with nowhere to stop, and it could get tough to navigate. Another thing to factor is time. Pick a route that is time manageable, as it takes about an hour for every three miles. You can start at the top, but my favorite stretch is Ogden to Fairmont Park in Manhattan. It’s fourteen absolutely gorgeous miles, and was considered the most sacred stretch of the entire river for the Native Kaw Tribe. You’ll pass by several Manhattan landmarks including Stagg Hill Golf Course,

Stagg Hill, the Konza Prairie, the highway 1-77 bridge, and several water towers. You’ll even pass by the mouth of Wildcat Creek! My next favorite stretch starts near the train bridge at Linear Park, off Highway 24. This is a fun stretch, and probably Manhattan’s most popular. It’s ten miles long. Pro: Enjoy Willie Good Pizza from Willie’s Hideout in St. George when you’re finished! Con: It snakes back to the south twice. When it’s really windy, there are usually white caps you’re pushing into heading that way. It’s definitely still passable, but it’s something to consider, especially in a canoe. The last stretch to recommend is St. George to Wamego. It basically juts a giant V, and it's shorter than the three routes above. At 8.5 miles, this is a great route and angle for the wind. Get on the water this summer! Take a friend, or someone who has never gone before! ALWAYS WEAR A LIFE JACKET, pick up your trash (check out Nauti Trash Cans!), and remember: 21 means 21. A total backyard transformation unlike any other in Manhattan’s Grand Mere

Nothing can totally transform a backyard the way a swimming pool does. For K-State graduates Drs. Marcie & Kelly Lechtenberg, this was exactly their vision for their beautiful, native stone-laden, ranch-style home. Built in 2008, and located in Manhattan’s Grand Mere neighborhood, the home’s original backyard was sloped, short in width, and featured a prominent tree line just a few paces from the patio. While the backyard seemed less than ideal, west of the home offered plenty of open space, so naturally, that’s where they thought they would eventually place the swimming pool. “Coming up with a final plan on exactly where we wanted it was the biggest challenge we faced,” said Dr. Kelly. “After many discussions, we thought the backyard would be the best place for it. It offered more privacy, a better combination of sun and shade, and we’d be able to move in and out of the house easily. We do a lot of entertaining, and the flow of the outdoor kitchen directly towards the pool made more sense.” In addition to the pool, they added a complete outdoor kitchen, a double-sided outdoor fireplace, renovated an outdoor closet into a pool room/butler’s pantry, and then removed a rear-patio access staircase from the upper deck. “We used all local contractors, and have been very happy with that. The electrical, plumbing, stone masons, outdoor kitchen, and, of course, the pool - all local people.” The project was general contracted by Thierer Construction, who created the retaining wall.

Blueville Nursery landscaped the yard, and the stone masonry was laid by Sean Padgett Masonry. The outdoor kitchen was installed by Aaron Nickell, The Wiring Guy, and the pool itself was designed, dug and installed by Energy Center-Manhattan Pool. Ground was broken in March 2021, and the entire renovation was completed just in time for Labor Day 2021. The stunning 40' by 20' pool is classified as a sport pool, which is designed specifically for swimming, exercise, and play. Unlike typical swimming pools that can be used in conjunction with slides and diving boards, sport pools are customized for shallow water enjoyment, activities, and games. There is 32' of swimmable space, and the depths measure from 3’ to 5’. On one side is a magnificent waterfall cast in a native stone wall; the other side features a basketball hoop between four MagicStream Laminars (single stream fountains). Travertine pool decking and customized LED lighting surrounds the entire pool, lending the entire backyard a resort-like feel. “We sat down with Kimberly and Hayden (Weber, of Energy Center-Manhattan Pool) and started with the basic ideas on pool shape. They were good about giving guidance and generalities, especially on costs. Their knowledge was incredible! It took just one meeting to get the construction set. We then approved the drawings and the depths. The team at the Energy Center-Manhattan Pool helped create a space that we love and they continue to support with excellent hometown service.”

HOW DID THE MIDFEST COME ABOUT? It came about as something to do over the summertime. There was a complaint about a lack of festivals in Manhattan. No one in my immediate circle wanted to go out and patronize Country Stampede when it was at Tuttle Creek. So, MidFest came about basically just as a group of friends putting on a live music event in a friend’s backyard for other friends’ bands. The first year was 2016. TELL US ABOUT YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH ARTS IN THE PARK? Our partnership with Arts In The Park came about in 2019, where they were looking to spice it up and do something different. We presented to them some R&B and hip-hop type talent, which they were interested in. So, we had our first Arts In The Park arrangement for June of 2020, which we all know what happened then. We’re just grateful and thankful to work with the City of Manhattan, and the Arts In The Park team. It allows us to bring different types of live music to Manhattan, Kansas that’s inviting to all walks of life and different genres of people. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST AT MIDFEST 2022? I’m looking forward to people having a grand ole time! People being able to enjoy themselves comfortably, safely, and without worries. Seeing the children’s reaction to some of the bands and some of the events that they attend is great. Whether it’s live music, or an art exhibit, or comedy at the Wareham, or the bands performing on 12th Street between Kite’s & Auntie Mae’s on the 23rd, I love it all. We even have some belly dancers (Lisa Jean) this year! I look forward to people coming out in droves! We feel that music and/or the arts is a platform that has a universal language associated with it that is inviting to anyone and everyone. I’m excited for it all. WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ACTS, AND A FEW OF THE UNKNOWNS THAT MIGHT SURPRISE US? I can't say that I have a favorite other than ALL of them! This year, we predicated our schedule on helping those that have been tucked away for the last two years come back in a comfortable, safe environment to perform, and to let people know they exist. This ranges from bands like Headlight Rivals, the Blackbird Fields, Part Time Heroes, Philosophy of Lions, the Manhattan

Mob, the Box Turtles out of Council Grove. Ultimate Facebook, our headliner. They were a late 90s/ early 2000s rock band, signed with Sony. Frogpond out of KC. Ashtray Babyhead. Jeremy Ricci and Mary Renne, the comedians. They’ve really helped comedy shine bright across the community. The plethora of talent across the board in this town of all genres of the arts is amazing. The goal of the festival for the community is to let people know they are welcomed with open arms to participate! We encourage everyone to be a part of our board or planning committee, or bring any insight or volunteer partnerships and the like. This is a community festival based on music, arts, and culture. And the culture that surrounds Manhattan is a melting pot in itself. With it being such a melting pot, that is something within our coordinated efforts to “put heads in beds, and butts in seats.” That’s why we appreciate Karen and Jason from Manhattan CVB and the Chamber of Commerce for their support this year. They have helped us find key allies and supporters. Outside of them, we’re appreciative for the university. People tell me they’re their own world, but they support the arts just as much as the locals. They have welcomed us with open arms! We have a great partnership with UPC (Union Program Council), the Student Union, and Career Services, as our internship program is going into its seventh year. We’re also thankful for the Journalism and Mass Communications Department, and the guidance of Steve Smethers, who recently retired. He’s a great mentor and advisor to our organization. On a cold day in February, just west of the roundabout on Anderson & Scenic Drive, sits “Westy.” A nickname endeared to him by people long past, it’s that of Darrell Westervelt. The longtime, (mostly) retired owner of Blueville Nursery is sitting there doing what he does better than anyone else in the world: Juniper tree grafting! Native to Leon, Kansas, Darrell came to K-State to get a degree in dairy husbandry in 1957, after attending junior college in El Dorado. In 1959, he signed up for a Master’s program and started working at Blueville Nursery for Gladys & Marlin Scott. “I always wanted to be a dairy farmer, but I was offered to work at the nursery for 50 cents an hour,” he says. “I negotiated it up to 75 cents an hour, because I knew how to drive a tractor!” After a short while, Merlin then offered to pay for his school if he changed his pursuit, so he graduated with a Master’s Degree in Horticulture. Upon graduating, he served in the US military, and was stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas. He served for two years, two months, and 13 days. As that tenure was coming to a close, the neatest thing happened. “I bought Blueville Nursery by the US Mail!” he laughs. “It was sight unseen, but I knew what I getting. It was a place I knew, and trusted, and knew it was the right opportunity. It was the best $7,500 I ever spent!” So that’s what Darrell and his beloved wife Dorothy did. They bought Blueville via the mail, and returned to Manhattan in February of 1962. Shortly after returning, they had their second son Keith, joining older brother Mark. They had a third son in 1964, Glen. The nursery was off and running and the rest is history! Greenhouse 12, or Prop House 12, is where the real magic happens at Blueville Nursery. Juniper grafting is a true art form, and is an ancient practice that serves as an important part of growing new Juniper. It’s the merging of two plants to make new one: The scion, which is the part of the stem with buds, is attached to a root stock, which is an established root. tremendous knowledge to know how to keep the two together - and to survive! The rootstock may survive in heavy soil, but it may also die. It’s always hard to tell. At Blueville Nursery, they have a survival rate that averages 90%. “The key to doing this is making sure you graft in January and February so they don’t get too hot,” he says. “These seedlings started last July, and go dormant, then they start growing.” The first thing he does is trims the scion to the correct length with a pair of shears. Then, using his signature, custom-made grafting knife that was handcrafted in Wichita, he shows us how to do it. “You just make a wedge on each trunk, and cut them down to the correct depth. Then you merge them together,” he says. “I prefer Hetzi rootstock, because it’s the best root to craft on. They’re also the best at not getting root rot. What we’re doing here is putting Upright Juniper onto this Hetzi rootstock. It’s the best Juniper understock.” He then takes a rubber band, and ties the two together. While still holding it with pressure, he applies a layer of wood glue over the wound, and sets it off to the side. Then he’s immediately onto the next. “If you’re working with him, don’t let him run out!” says son, and President of Blueville Nursery, Keith. “He’s pretty fast once he gets going!” Keith, or whoever is working with him that day, then takes the newly grafted Junipers into a series of grafting chambers

lining the 20’ x 45’ greenhouse. The chambers look like miniature greenhouses-within-a-greenhouse. They help keep the humidity up, which is vital for the Junipers to take, and to not scar. Each grafting chamber holds 144 Junipers, and each house throughout the greenhouse is full. All together, Blueville Nursery grafts about 2,500 new Junipers each year. Blueville Nursery holds four different patents for their handgrafted Junipers, which are sold in all 50 states and internationally. Their best seller is Skinny Blue Jeans, which sells nearly 5,000 a year, followed by Cotton Candy. They also have Blue Thunderbolt Spruce, and the one that Darrell was grafting for us that day, the Golden Frost Juniper. Fast forward to this July, and nearly all of the Golden Frost Junipers we saw have survived. They are currently moving into one gallon pots, where they’ll grow a season, and get a stake to help stand straight. Next July, they’ll be put into three gallon pots. Next fall, they will be planted into the field, or sold by the dozen. They’ll eventually grow to be 15 to 40 feet tall. Each one will be grown into very happy and tall Juniper tree that will last a long time, and be enjoyed by generations of people. They will grow to help turn carbon dioxide into oxygen. They’ll help regenerate the soil and the area around it. They will make yards look better, and the earth a much better place. All of this, thanks to Westy!
