LIFESTYLE LETTER

The Wonderful Women of Kansas Hello Manhattan! First, to those celebrating the end of Ramadan: Eid Mubarak! It is an absolute honor to present our May issue, which focuses on incredible local women and female-led businesses. When my mom was born, women could not open a credit card in their own name. When I was born, female entrepreneurs could not borrow money without a male co-signer. Today, there are over one million female-owned businesses in the US! I am grateful to all the women who came before me, who fought for greater rights and opportunities for all. Manhattan is lucky to be the home base for many businesses led by women. Many of my favorite spots in the area are owned or co-owned by women: The Dusty Bookshelf, Unbreakable Strength, Mama Fang's. Each of these businesses, and so many others, make Manhattan the vibrant community that it is. Beyond leading their own businesses, many women in the community are also helping to uplift and empower others. Through her work as the Vice President of the Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau, Kathy Hibbard works to welcome visitors from all over the world to the Little Apple. As the CEO of SEG Media, Sheila Ellis-Glasper enables businesses to expand their reach and amplify their impact. Through her time working out at Maximum Performance, Jessi (Divine) Erickson inspires people to grow stronger, move joyfully, and live a more empowered life. Mother’s Day is just around the corner on May 8th. This day gives us a chance to reflect on the women who have shaped us, who have stood next to us during difficult times, and who have celebrated our achievements. Each of us owes a debt of gratitude to the women who raised and guided us -- the mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts, and honorary aunties. The teachers who have believed in our potential. The doctors, nurses, and medical assistants who have cared for us. This month, I encourage you to reflect on the inspirational women in your own life. Reach out to thank them for their impact on your life. I guarantee that it will make their day -- and yours. Finally, I would like to say happy Mother’s Day to all of the mothers and mother-figures out there, but especially to my own mom! Warmly, H E AT H E R H O F F M A N , E D I TO R @ M A N H AT TA N C I T Y L I F E S T Y L E

NO LIMITS Jessi (Divine) Erickson proves there’s No Limits every time she hits the gym

ARTICLE BY TYLER JACKSON PHOTOGRAPHY BY TIM SIGLE

For traveling labor & delivery nurse, Jessi (Divine) Erickson, the first step of the day usually happens at the crack of dawn, five A.M., with the last step not occurring until nearly 15 hours later. That’s why on her days off, a trip to her gym - Maximum Performance Physical Therapy & Fitness - is of utmost importance. A native of Wamego and recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, Jessi has been developing a workout routine at Maximum Performance since 2010 - but it hasn’t always been that easy. “When I first walked into this gym, I was so intimidated. I just told myself they’re not looking at you. Everybody is here to work on themselves. They want to be a better version of themselves. The biggest person that you need to battle is yourself.” For Jessi, getting past those first few steps leading into the gym proved to be crucial. “When I started here, I was in a spot in my life when I was so weak minded. But every day I stepped in here, I felt myself getting mentally tougher. I could have gone downhill in a hurry had I not found this place.” She also adds that she is grateful for not only the gym itself, but for her trainer, Fitness Director, Aaron Akin. “In the beginning for me, it was great having a leader and coach for me to look up to and to work hard for. After awhile, we started to workout together to hold each other accountable, but

due to my schedule, it’s harder to work out together. Now, I’m essentially on my own. It is much harder to work out on your own, but I like ‘Max P’ because my trainers are still always here. This place is much more than a gym, it is a family.” The best advice she can give to any person looking to get in shape is pretty simple: “Just get in here. It’s a mental battle, especially when you’re exhausted, but just build a routine. It’s a big part of my life, and like a lot of people who come in here, it’s not an option. Just get in here, get it done, and get out.” Maximum Performance Physical Therapy and Fitness is celebrating 20 years in 2022! 426 McCall Rd, Manhattan, KS

While (almost) everyone loves a good candle, most moms just want to feel appreciated, have time with family, and have time to relax. SHEILA ELLISGLASPER THE MANHATTAN-BASED CEO, ENTREPRENEUR, & MOTHER TALKS LEAVING A LEGACY AND TRUSTING GOD’S PLAN

26

LOCA L LIM E LIGH T | L IFE + CULTURE

Sheila Ellis-Glasper is a Topeka-native, K-State graduate, and CEO of SEG Media Collective, a creative marketing agency that offers social media auditing, strategy & management, and branding design. She is also the Founder of Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills, a non-profit focused on empowering and connecting local Black business owners. In 2021, Sheila was named Kansas Minority Business Advocate of the Year by Governor Laura Kelly. She and her husband Jermain have two children, Tre & Jeremiah.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN YOUR CAREER? Everything that has happened in my career -- I know that God has ordered my steps. By the time I graduated from K-State, I had been published in national publications: USA Today, CNN, ESPN. And, I had two offers: one from the Associated Press, one from Roanoke Times, the largest daily newspaper in Western Virginia. I already made a commitment to return to Roanoke Times after completing an internship program there. I thought it was just a year then on to the next, but God had different plans — I ended up meeting my husband, we got married, and had Tre.

SHEIL A ELLIS- GL ASPER

HOW DID YOUR CAREER SHIFT AFTER TRE WAS BORN? Tre inspired me to start my business. As a young reporter, you have to grind. I worked the night crime beat and I wasn’t getting home until midnight or one. Then, I had a new baby and developed PPD [Postpartum Depression]. When this happened ten years ago, people weren’t talking about these things openly. I learned that it’s okay to not be okay — but not to stay there. I had to decide that I wanted more control over my life, rather than my destiny being in someone else’s hands. I wanted to be at home with my family and I had a lot to figure out as a new mom and wife. As I started my healing with PPD, I started my first business at Tre’s crib-side. I didn’t go to school for business; I learned as I went along. I didn’t know many women who ran a business who looked like me. It’s hard to be what you can’t see. Six years ago, I founded SEG Media Collective. Now I help my clients tell their stories to their audiences and grow their businesses. We get to create opportunities for other people and we just landed our largest national client to date. HOW DID YOUR PERSPECTIVE SHIFT AFTER BECOMING AN ENTREPRENEUR? This year marks my ten year anniversary of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship forces business owners to know their value. Running a business is about more than just you. If I’m having trouble seeing my value, being able to negotiate to make sure we get compensated properly for work, that

affects my team and company growth. I’ve had great support, my husband has been a tremendous business partner helping me to realize my value and strategically plan. Sistahbiz Global Network, a business accelerator for black women-owned businesses, has poured resources and referrals into me that helped us double in revenue in 2021. HOW DID BLACK ENTREPRENEURS OF THE FLINT HILLS START? George Floyd was a turning point in our country. People started asking, “Where are the Blackowned businesses here?” I founded the Black Entrepreneurs of the Flint Hills to empower, equip, and engage Black businesses with resources to grow. Now, we have the first directory of Blackowned businesses in our region and a safe-space for Black entrepreneurs to thrive. It’s all about leaving a legacy that will make it better for the next entrepreneur of color coming behind us. HOW DID TRE’S SQUEEZE START? My uncle has a barbecue business, Smokin H’s Meats, which has a stand at the [Downtown Manhattan] Farmers’ Market. One day, Tre said, “I noticed when Unc is selling barbecue at the Farmers’ Market, there aren’t any drink vendors. I think I want to start a lemonade stand.” Tre created his own logo and decided to put it on every cup. A customer said, “It would be great

to have this in a bottle, so I can buy more from you.” On the car ride home, Tre was already online ordering bottles for the next week. We took him up to Topeka to the Department of Revenue so he could see us sign the business documentation to get him started. We want Tre’s Squeeze to be successful, but we have to prioritize that he’s a kid. Balance is very important to us. His goal is to be on Shark Tank one day. WHAT LESSONS ABOUT ENTREPRENEURSHIP DO YOU WANT TO PASS ON TO YOUR CHILDREN? My children are my legacy. I want them to understand ownership and self value. I want to pass on the work ethic I learned from my parents. I want them to understand the emotional intelligence part of entrepreneurship too, to know that we can learn from our failures. I want them to experience true freedom that entrepreneurship can provide. The way that everything has happened and formed over the past decade -- this is nothing that I could have orchestrated on my own. I’m right where I’m supposed to be. Get Away to the Mile High City Where the Mountains and Metropolitan Lifestyle Vibrantly Coincide

Visit Denver When you think about Denver, what immediately may come to mind is the gateway to the stunning landscape of mountain peaks with an abundance of recreational activities. But what you might not realize is just how unbelievable the urban experience is in this extraordinary city set at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Our team of local lifestyle fanatics at City Lifestyle are thrilled to collaborate with Visit Denver to present a customized visitor’s guide and exclusive GIVEAWAY* to this mile-high destination. With recent recognition and rankings, such as landing its spot as a top 10 city in the world to visit (Lonely Planet), leading the nation in attendance at performing arts events and exhibitions (National Endowment for the Arts), a repeat nominee for its foodie and craft beverage scene, and home to THE most attended concert venue of any size anywhere in the world (Billboard), Denver is bursting with profound cultural and lifestyle experiences, and we’re here to round up our recommendations for you. One neighborhood that sets Denver apart is Cherry Creek North, otherwise known as the Mile High City’s ultimate luxury shopping and dining destination with the highest concentration of small businesses. Get your street chic and fun-filled soles ready for 16 walking-friendly blocks of shopping, pampering, entertaining and feasting. With ample annual events to check out, pair your festival-fan side with high-end couture hunting at Cherry Creek Shopping Center, perusing Hermes, Chanel, Stuart Weitzman and Louis Vuitton, just to name a few. As you work up an appetite, prepare to drink and devour the exquisite fare that Cherry Creek offers with more than 50 restaurants, making it almost impossible to choose and most definitely requiring a return visit. One such sophisticated and stylish restaurant destination includes Local Jones inside the urban

Enter for a chance to win a 3-night getaway to Denver! chic Halcyon, a hotel in Cherry Creek. Equal parts nostalgia and composure, this neighborhood restaurant serves up great food in a socially engaging atmosphere, offering brunch and dinner menus. Step outside the restaurant, and you’ll find the only hotel property in the country that offers a Vespa to zip around town. Halcyon feels a bit like your living room with a warm and inviting vibe. Soak up the social atmosphere both upon entry and at the Elevated Rooftop Bar, and bring your swimsuit for the pool deck complete with recreational curling, cabanas and breathtaking views of the city. Beyond the charm of Cherry Creek, Denver’s culture of arts and live music are thriving and growing by leaps and bounds. Take Meow Wolf, for example. Meow Wolf’s third permanent exhibition, Convergence Station, opened in Denver in September 2021 and is a not-to-be-missed experience. Likewise, the Denver Art Museum hosts its global art collections representing cultures from around the world, with more than 70,000 works of art in 12 permanent collections along with several outdoor artworks not to be overlooked.

Denver’s urban-vibed River North Art District is a former industrial mercantile area turned into an artist magnet—blending urban charm and industrial revival with a collection of maker and artist galleries, breweries and bars, restaurants and coffee roasters, and street art murals surrounding you at nearly every corner. Be sure to check out Bigsby’s Folly for its roaring ‘20s-inspired urban winery experience.
