Growing up, my mother always made our home look like a Hallmark movie for the Christmas season. It began with perfectly placed, multi-colored lights circling our home’s perimeter outdoors. Walking inside, you knew Bing Crosby would love this place. It was full of all the décor, centered around the most beautiful tree I’ve still ever seen. Artificial, adorned with fake freshly fallen snow, it remains my favorite style of tree to this day. It was full of so many eclectic ornaments. She had a snowy village on the fireplace mantle that I would stare at for hours. It was quite apparent that it took a lifetime to acquire such a collection. My momma - Ms. Jeri Lynn Jackson - is long gone now, but the memories remain, and they’ll always be there. I know I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to recapture that feeling of those times, and I know I’ll always come up short. All I can do is promise to give my future children the same childhood experiences, because, at the end of the day, Christmas really isn’t about anything else but family and time spent together. You won’t remember what meal you ate. You won’t remember what game was on TV (unless we’re talking about K-State’s loss to Boston College on Christmas Day in the 1994 Aloha Bowl!). You probably won’t even remember what gifts you got. All you will remember is who was there and the ambiance of it all. This month, we wanted to highlight the magic of the season and what MHK has to offer that helps spread holiday cheer. We’ve compiled a gift guide to make your shopping easier, and that also supports local businesses. We show you what Manhattan Tech has going on, and their future plans. We also meet some people who can’t be home for the holidays, because they are serving the greater good. In the true spirit of the season, let’s take care of those in our community who need assistance or who are alone. My hope for you this season is that you feel love and peace and that we all remember to take care of each other, extending grace, empathy, and love. For Christmas, we send themed boxes to him and his whole team, so everyone is included. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS WHEN YOU ALL GET TO BE TOGETHER? Spending time with friends that have become family. For many in the Fort Riley community, we’re all we have. We have a Secret Santa with the neighborhood and decorate holiday cookies with the kids. HOW DO YOU GIVE BACK DURING THE HOLIDAYS? Last year, we gave out baskets with turkey through dessert from our garage in Fort Riley. One in four military families face food insecurity. We started by giving out baskets of food, diapers, and wipes during PCS [Permanent Change of Station] season. The ripple effect of the community makes an impact. People would leave groceries on my porch for the pantry, and a middle schooler collected 600 pounds of food. Having family present during the holidays helps a lot, so there’s someone the patient recognizes. A former patient wrote me a “thank you” card and gave the staff cookies to show us appreciation. DO YOU HAVE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS AT WORK? People volunteer their time to decorate and organize a potluck. My favorite dish has been Filipino noodles [pancit] with chicken and vegetables. WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS WHEN YOU GET TO BE HOME? Sitting around the fireplace and eating recipes that grandma used to make.

Azeite Aromático Alecrim, available at Arrow Bodega, is an aromatic, cold pressed olive oil infused with rosemary. INGREDIENTS • ¾ cup Azeite Aromático Alecrim • 3 eggs • 1 ¼ cup sugar • 1 ¾ cup heavy cream • 2 teaspoon vanilla • Zest & juice of two lemons • 2 cup all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon baking powder • 2 teaspoon baking soda • ¼ teaspoon dried rosemary • Powdered sugar • 2 lemon peels: sliced & covered in sugar DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a 9” springform pan with parchment paper. 2. Whisk together olive oil (azeite), eggs, sugar, and heavy cream. Add lemon zest, juice, and vanilla; set aside. 3. In a separate bowl, combine flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Mix thoroughly. 4. Combine dry and wet ingredients, just until the flour disappears into the batter, careful to not over-mix. 5. Pour batter into the pan, and sprinkle with powdered sugar. 6. Bake for 50 minutes. Allow to cool. Top with powdered sugar and sugared lemon peels.

Manhattan Tech seeks to expand their campus to meet the demands of Manhattan’s workforce

Few institutions have the potential to drive a community’s long-term economic sustainability and growth like a technical college. While Manhattan is internationally known as the home of one of the nation’s leading four-year universities, Kansas State University, one of the Little Apple’s strongest economic assets sits at the corner of Seth Child Road and Dickens Avenue. Since its founding in 1965, Manhattan Area Technical College, or simply Manhattan Tech, has proved to be critical to the workforce and economy of the greater Manhattan area. The statistics speak for themselves. Based on research conducted by Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce, Manhattan Tech is the number oneranked return on investment among all Kansas public colleges and universities. According to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s findings on 2-year colleges, it was ranked 5th-best for graduation rate in the nation, and it sits atop the rankings as the best education in Kansas at the lowest price. Its Construction Tech and Registered Nurse programs are both ranked first in the state, and its Licensed Practical Nurse Program is ranked third. In 2022, WalletHub, a personal finance website, ranked Manhattan Tech as the nation’s fourth best two-year college, out of nearly 700 schools, based graduation rate, job placement rate, and job earnings. Most impressively, they have achieved these top rankings while having the single smallest campus of all Kansas public colleges and universities - and without receiving taxpayer support. Unlike public universities and community colleges, Kansas tech colleges do not receive any local property tax contributions. With bio manufacturer Scorpion Biological Services, setting its sights on Manhattan and becoming operational within the next few years, it is imperative that this MHK educational institution expands and modernizes its facilities. At least 50 percent of Scorpions’ estimated 500 employees will come directly from Manhattan Tech.

“Their goal with what they are doing here is to be in the top five in the nation in biomanufacturing and bioscience,” says Dr. James Genandt, President and CEO of Manhattan Tech. “Again, this is why this new building and our ability to help train up to half of their workforce is vital. It’s not ‘gee, it would be nice if we could do it’. We have to do it. If we want to turn this part of the state into that biotech and bioscience hub, working alongside K-State, and also creating additional incredible workforce and economic opportunities, we have to make this happen. We simply need more room.” Thus, the Building HIRE Education campus expansion capital campaign was born. Led by Genandt and Harry Watts from the Manhattan Tech Foundation, a fundraising campaign is underway to fund the new campus. Phase I of the project broke ground on November 11, and will be the first in a series of four phases. The first phase will include a new, 47,000-square-foot prefabricated building and will house six technical programs, including biomanufacturing. Phase II will feature a new, three-story building at the corner of Wreath Avenue & Dickens Avenue for bio-services and healthcare. Phase III will include renovations to the existing main building, while adding to the quickly-growing Information & Network Technology program. Then, Phase IV will include new and expanded space to the northwest corner of campus, which will be the home of community services, childhood development, and the regional testing center. Once complete, the campus will expand from its current 86,000 square feet to over 230,000 feet. Starting after Phase 1, the estimated economic impact will also grow, from the current $18 million dollars annually to over $50 million. “When you keep people employed, it’s not just more property tax, it’s more sales tax, which is the real key for city and county government budgets,” says Genandt. “You’re also keeping families here, which helps our local school CONTINUED >

Since it is the Season of Giving, Manhattan Tech could use your help.

“We love any donation, of any size for this project,” says Genandt. “There are naming rights, and they are very flexible. Again remember, we don’t get any local taxes. That is one thing the public often misunderstands about us. We are funded by tuition and private donations. So we really could use your help! We cannot state how important this is for the future of Manhattan.”

Giving Campaign Now in its third year, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign will give away $300,000 this holiday season to help individual community members who would benefit from a helping hand during their time of need. But they need YOUR HELP to make it happen! Maybe you know of a single parent struggling to provide, an elderly person who has experienced loss, a child enduring a health issue, a co-worker suffering a sudden, unexpected tragedy or a neighbor with a financial hardship who has fallen between the cracks of getting assistance. Chances are you know someone with a specific need—even if nobody else does. To preserve and protect the dignity of every recipient, the City Lifestyle Giving Campaign is completely confidential. No identities will be revealed or publicized in ANY way. (Even those who nominate others may remain anonymous if they choose.) Last year, City Lifestyle was able to give to more than 70 recipients all over the country by sending checks in the mail through New Year’s Eve. (This year, the goal is to double that number with checks ranging in amounts up to $3,000 each.) With nominations flooding in from community members and leaders such as judges, police officers, teachers, nurses, social workers, mentors and readers like you, we were able to reach people who might otherwise go unnoticed. “We believe in giving back and serving the communities where we live in a real and tangible way,” says Steven Schowengerdt, CEO and founder of City Lifestyle. “This Giving Campaign is all about personally impacting the lives of people we know with an unexpected check in the mail just to say that someone thought of them this holiday season.” Together with Matthew Perry, Chief Sales Officer, Steven adds that the outpouring and gratitude from the recipients was overwhelming and affirmed that this is a tradition they want to continue. “We believe God has blessed our company with continued success,” Matthew adds, “so we in turn want to be a blessing to others.” City Lifestyle has also enacted an internal giving program whereby every employee in the company receives $100 to give away to someone in the community. “The idea is to encourage our employees to keep doing it on their own,” Steven says. “Taking care of one another and blessing others is so rewarding that it perpetuates a cycle of giving. It’s extremely important to me as a person and as a company to foster that culture of generosity.”
