THE WOMEN PROFILED IN THIS MONTH’S ISSUE ARE TRULY REMARKABLE. In the communities we cover with Conejo Valley Lifestyle and Malibu to Palisades Lifestyle, there are really more very special female professional, business, nonprofit leaders and “difference makers” than we could ever profile or acknowledge in a single issue. Our communities have the resources to excel and excel we do…. with great energy and generosity.

What is also very exciting is the recent acceleration of opportunity for women in business, professions, the arts and politics. It may not all be perfect, but I prefer to celebrate what we have and what we have gained.

What I would like to think about in this brief letter is most of the rest of us.

Regular folks. Women raising families the right way. Giving their children love, understanding and a moral compass and very often holding down a job while we do it. Also, women on their own. Building independent lives and not needing

Women & Investing

ARTICLE JEFF RUNYAN WHILE GENDER EQUALITY IN THE WORKFORCE ARGUABLY HAS ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT, AND SO TOO DOES THE PERSISTENCE OF A PAY GAP, THERE SHOULD NOT BE A GAP IN FINANCIAL LITERACY OR INVESTING CONFIDENCE BETWEEN WOMEN AND MEN. Yet studies suggest that women believe they have less financial savvy than their male counterparts.

That’s an erroneous belief because women innately possess many of the characteristics known to contribute to achieving very favorable investment outcomes.

In fact, financial editor and writer LouAnn Lofton, author of Warren Buffet Invests Like a Girl: And Why You Should Too, studied the habits of the world’s most renowned investor. She made observations about him and paralleled behaviors in men and women in relation to their habits in handling money. Her conclusion: Warren Buffet has a “feminine flair” to his investment style.

Lofton found that women tend to exhibit a calm temperament, enjoy a longer term outlook, expend more effort in research, make fewer investment trades, and are not reactionary; meaning they remain steady under pressure. All of these characteristics tend to blend nicely while keeping an investor goal-oriented and outcome-focused.

It boils down to temperament. Buffett is known to have said that temperament—not intellect—makes for great longterm investment success. Women tend to view an investment for what it is: an investment, not a gamble (a polar opposite effect than one invoked when you tune into a Financial News program like “Mad Money” on CNBC). Buffet thinks long-term and focuses on investments he knows and understands. And, he has a preferred investment hold time of … “forever,” a true testament to acquiring wealth by owning an investment for long periods of time, including during periods of decline.

Other studies suggest that men can view investing as a game and be driven by ego, overconfidence, and vanity (*note to reader – not my clients). And, that they may be more likely to trade on hot stock tips, but not do enough research. One study published by Vanguard examined the 2008 decline in the market and the corresponding trading activity in IRAs. It found that men were more likely to panic and sell at the “bottom”—as in, at the exact wrong time. Remember, “buy-low, sell-high”—not the reverse! The study found men showed less restraint with their emotions, whereas women, who tend to be calmer, patient and hold longer term, did not. In fact, they held fast.

If a gap in any capacity should exist between genders in investing it should be that women outperform men. On average, they do their research before making decisions, which helps lead to better outcomes. They are proven to be thoughtful about their goals, resolute in staying focused on achieving them, and often spend more time than men thinking and evaluating what they truly want.

It may be that tides are changing, and that empowered women will lead even more often in the workplace and in take-home pay.

But to start, there’s no question that they should lead the way in investment success, as they have the very habits that increase probabilities of investment success and financial outcomes over time.

And, given that women have longer life expectancies than men, it means that women who share Buffet’s preferred hold time of “forever” may really enjoy an even more pronounced investment outcome than men.

More than five months after the fire, many of the local trails are ruined, dangerous or impassable. One focus of the organization is getting the Santa Monica mountain trails reopened to horseback riders, mountain bikers and hikers, another is financially helping women-owned businesses with the horse expenses and an extensive array of animal responsibilities. Thanks to the efforts of MalibuLove.org, these women have received assistance from celebrity supporters in Malibu, including Cher, Tracy Bregman and Mallory Lewis. Other sources of financial support have come from several women-owned businesses (Sami Gros’ “Taillights,” a start-up that lights the tails of horses for night riding safety; Darlene Geekie of “Veterinary Angels,” a small and large animal vet clinic and “The Little Angels Project,” a nonprofit that rescues animals in need of aid; and Claudia Bakker “OYA,” an app connecting women-owned businesses). This is an ongoing long recovery process for these cherished women-owned businesses.

DECLARED THE OPIOID CRISIS A PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY. Approximately 130 people die each day from opioid-related drug overdoses. Every day, more than 1,000 people are treated in hospital emergency rooms for misusing prescription opioids.

We are not far removed from this epidemic in our comfortable coastal communities— California had the second highest number of drug overdose deaths in 2016. Additionally, the prevalence rate of opioid misuse/abuse is higher in Los Angeles County than the national average.

Local oral maxillofacial surgeon, veteran and faculty at the UCLA School of Dentistry Dr. Max Moncayo shared what he and his team at Palisades Surgical Arts are doing to combat the crisis.

“We try to take steps to minimize the need for opioid prescriptions,” says Dr. Max. “One issue, especially with surgery, is that patients assume they need an extremely strong pain medication like a narcotic, or if they’ve been prescribed it before, that’s what they want.”

“We must educate our patients that the use of modern technology has reduced recovery time and pain from surgical procedures. Oral surgery 20 years ago is vastly different from surgery today, with different techniques and materials available.”

HIGH TECH HEALING Dr. Max strives to be minimally invasive and utilize methods that accelerate healing, reducing the need for opioids. Most of his treatment includes wisdom teeth extractions, bone grafts, gum surgery, dental implant surgery, but he performs the full gamut of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Healing from this type of surgery can be uncomfortable, but here are some ways he and his team try to minimize pain and maximize healing.

The Periolase MVP-7 is a dental laser that is essentially a “no cut, no sew” alternative to gum surgery. It helps initiate the healing/clotting process, resulting in faster recovery time.

Dr. Max uses patients’ own stem cells to aid in their healing. L-PRF, which stands for “leukocyte and platelet-rich fibrin,” is used to optimize wound healing and facilitate a smoother, more comfortable process.

Even a simple long-acting local anesthetic can eliminate the need for strong medications into the initial healing period. The longer a patient is comfortable after a procedure, less medication is needed to help manage post operative pain.

Dr. Max outlines recently mandated measures in California to help alleviate the crisis, including CURES, an online database with the Department of Justice, that requires prescribers to review a patient’s current and past use of controlled substances. Also, as of January 2019, prescribers must discuss specific information with a minor’s parent (and obtain consent) if issuing a prescription with an opioid-containing substance.

“These steps still aren’t enough,” Dr. Max explains.

“Wisdom teeth removal is usually the first exposure to opiates for most adolescents—we need to do our best to limit that exposure since even the first use can lead to a lifetime of addiction.”

Dr. Max teaches his students, residents and fellow providers to embrace new advances to limit exposure of our youth to these addictive drugs.
