JULY IN A VERY UNUNITED STATE OF AFFAIRS. Yes, it really bothers us. We love the communities we cover with Conejo Valley Lifestyle and Malibu to Palisades Lifestyle. We are ready to celebrate the 4th of July and our country with family, food, fireworks, flags waving, parades, speeches about the glory of being American, while at the same time our fellow Americans and our supposed leaders are tearing us apart. Has the extreme freedom of the digital universe opened up Pandora’s Box and let loose all of the pent up frustrations and dysfunction that old technology kept hidden? Are we free to attack each other on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit and other digital platforms and not take responsibility for the poison that spews forth? Sticks and stones hurt, but so do words filled with hatred and lies. Tell a lie often and loud enough and it becomes the truth to many people. Just ask some politicians. They are quite good at it. I am a Vietnam War era veteran. I served during a time when our country started to not value patriotism. It began to lose its value because of a very divisive war.

Since then I have read a great deal about how we were lied to with impunity to justify that war. Nevertheless, I will forgive and hold onto the values that actually did make America great. Those values are represented in the Statue of Liberty around whom fireworks are burst with hardly any thought of what it all really means. Time is getting short to revisit those values. We need to embrace them and reunite.

E N CI N I TA S “Everybody’s gone surfing…surfing USA,” sang the Beach Boys, immortalizing Encinitas’ Swami’s Beach for generations to come. Encinitas’ breathtaking beaches and world-class waves only begin to scratch the surface of this iconic surf town’s treasures. Located in North County San Diego, about 130 miles from home, Encinitas comprises six miles of coastline, natural wetlands, unique nurseries and gardens, a lively downtown shopping and dining scene and a friendly, easygoing vibe. Stroll the historic downtown area and explore the eclectic, beachy shops, like Bliss 101, where customers can sip champagne while discovering the store’s unique offerings, like sea glass and wave-inspired rings and one-of-a-kind gemstone necklaces fashioned by local artists. Visit the Shelter and stretch out on comfy couches in an open-air lounge while sipping specialty cocktails, enjoy the patio firepit or catch the game on their big screens. The area also boasts fine and casual dining of all types—many served with a view (try Las Olas across from the beach or the two-story Pacific Coast Grill). Known as the “Flower Capital of the World,” Encinitas will thrill nature lovers of all ages with its extensive collection of nurseries and gardens, including the San Diego Botanic Garden. With nearly 4,000 varieties of plants from around the world, the garden features more than 37 acres of exhibits, including the largest bamboo groves in the U.S., a tropical rainforest, an undersea succulent garden and the Hamilton Children’s Garden, the West Coast’s largest interactive children’s garden. Visitors can also take a free guided nature tour at the San Elijo Lagoon, where 40% of the birds in North America pass by during their annual migrations, or take a timeout at the serene Self-Realization Fellowship enjoying the meditation gardens, koi ponds and views of famous Swami’s Beach. Encinitas’ close proximity to San Diego’s popular attractions—Sea World, Legoland, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park—make it an ideal destination for exploring the area’s many offerings.

S AN TA CR UZ

On the warmer north side of the Monterey Bay where the redwoods meet the ocean sits the coastal town of Santa Cruz. Off the beaten path, Santa Cruz is about a six-hour drive (about 330 miles) from home. It boasts picturesque beaches, sea piers, wharfs and boat harbors, as well as mountain redwood forests and multitudes of streams and lakes. Its redwood forests house vast arrays of trails and tiny mountain towns, like Ben Lomond, Boulder Creek, Bonny Dune and Lompico that look as if they’ve been preserved in time for a hundred years. Boarding the old train for a 6-mile ride from the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk amusement park to Felton through a winding forest and trestle bridge railroad is like going back in time. The old-style passenger train stops in the towering Old Growth Redwood forest called the Henry Cowell State Park and Roaring Camp Railroad. Bring your flip flops, hiking shoes, mountain bikes or surfboards to suit your nature, as this outdoorsy natural town offers many activities for the young at heart. Enjoy plenty of people watching, street performers, restaurants and shopping in the downtown center at Pacific Avenue, the heart of Santa Cruz, where local UC Santa Cruz students known for their unusual Banana Slugs mascot frequent coffee shops. After spending a little time in this town, visitors will understand what is meant by the ubiquitous bumper stickers proclaiming to “Keep Santa Cruz Weird." This fun-loving surf town located 90 minutes south of San Francisco and 30 minutes west of Silicon Valley has been a favorite getaway for these northern crowds for decades.

In being so lucky to have been given this gorgeous, ocean view space, Park wanted to pass on her good fortune to the local community. “I’m using it to feature local artists and I use the space for local fundraising,” Park says. For instance, she recently started, with her dear friend Joe McDougall, an art scholarship for Malibu High School students wishing to further their education in the arts. “We hosted an event in the gallery called Malibu Masters, which included works by Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Stern, Lyndie Benson, Katherine Kousi and a half dozen more talented folks from our community,” Park recalls. “We were able to present a $10,000 scholarship to a very deserving young boy from Malibu High. It has been the highlight of my career to have been able to do this.” Park also recently hosted an event for Thera Surf, a Malibu-based nonprofit organization founded by surfers who bring physically challenged children out into the water, geared with safety equipment, so that they can surf with their assistance. “It was just a wonderful, feel-good night bringing our community together for the greater good,” Park says. “It’s truly a pleasure for me to be able to give back to our wonderful, sweet little town. Malibu is a small town where we all do what we can to keep it special.” For more information about PCH POP UP, or to be added to the mailing list, visit PCHPOPUP.com or call 424.279.0147.

Among the group’s activities are monthly en plein air "paint-outs" held the second Saturday of each month in a variety of spectacular locations. “All of the paintings have to be representational art of the Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area, which runs from Will Rogers State Park in Pacific Palisades up to Point Mugu State Park in Oxnard,” says Allied Artists board member and artist Russell Hunziker. “It is truly a joy to go out and paint in these extraordinarily scenic areas. We also are supportive of each other and talk about each other's work in a congenial manner.” “We try to stay easygoing, but we take our work very seriously and the talent quotient is high,” agrees Allied Artists president, artist Robert Scopinich. “Each of us is trying to capture something magnificent in nature. We come together with this drive—that is what bonds us.” In addition to the monthly paint-outs, Allied Artists holds member exhibits throughout the year, donating about 20% of sales to conservation organizations, such as the Mountains Restoration Trust, Santa Monica Interagency Visitors Center, California Native Plants Society, Will Rogers Foundation, Wildlife Federation for Wildlife Bridge and Malibu Nature Preserve. information

ON A CLEAR DAY WITH GENTLE BREEZES, LOOKING UP INTO THE SKY ABOVE MALIBU MID-MORNING OFTEN REVEALS A GLIMPSE OF PARAGLIDERS SOARING THROUGH THE AIR— MOST LIKELY WITH CLAUDE FISET, OWNER OF MALIBU PARAGLIDING. For the past 30 years, the Pacific Palisades resident has enjoyed sharing his love of the sport with willing participants brave enough to glide through the skies with Fiset, who takes pride in his perfect safety record. “Everybody tells me it is way better than skydiving,” says Fiset. “Anybody can drop like a rock, but we learn to fly like soaring birds, and paraglider designs are so advanced now that we can safely fly after learning the basics with a good instructor, and of course, flying tandem with me! I am living proof after 30 years with a perfect safety record.” A stunt man, expert skier, whitewater kayaking instructor and mountain biker with an Engineering degree, Fiset first tried paragliding during a ski trip in British Columbia. “I knew it was something I would not do only once!” he recalls, remembering the freedom and exhilaration he felt while paragliding. With the only paragliding company in Malibu, Fiset offers paragliding and powered paragliding tandem

“It can be a very technical sport and imitating bird flight is an art!” says Fiset. “It is fun to share this feeling with others. Once you learn the basics, it’s possible to fly on your own safely on your first day!” he adds. In addition to paragliding lessons and tandem flights, Fiset offers aerial photos and videos, as well as Synergy Paramotors, the most innovative powered paragliders.

LOCAL’S CHOICE

W H A T

I S

MONEY? WE ALL THINK ABOUT IT. We all want it. And, we all need it. Whether you work for it, inherit it or you somehow have access to it from a spouse or another, money is an exciting resource that people handle very differently. Money can be a source of pride for some who are pleased with their disciplined, lifelong choices that have led to the accumulation of wealth. Others have been known to have said, "it takes money to make money” and spend it freely in anticipation that spending will build more relationships and business in the future. Whatever your approach, it may well be one that you don't talk about with others, and if you do, it is not likely often. Everyone grows up in a household where views, experiences and circumstances differ with handling money, and because of that, they perceive it differently. These attitudes and beliefs that each of us innately has are the underpinnings of how people choose and cope with economic decisions. That's why some who save prudently and may appear to have a "smaller annual income" based on their consumption habits frequently can surprise family and friends when, at their death, it's learned that they had large estates or significant assets. It's the central idea of the book, The Millionaire Next Door, by Thomas J. Stanley that describes "Under Accumulators of Wealth" and "Prodigious Accumulators of Wealth" and the differentiating habits between each. The research concluded that frequently high earning professionals might accumulate less wealth than a lower earning person because they have an expensive lifestyle and consumption habits that drain wealth as opposed to building net worth. But the reality is prudent money management, retirement planning and compound interest are typically topics not taught in school, even though they are subjects that will affect you throughout life. And, given that Los Angeles is the kind of environment that breeds expensive houses or neighborhoods, shimmering cars and fashionable clothes, it might be hard not to be tempted to "keep up with the Joneses." ARTICLE JEFF RUNYAN

But, if you have a competitive spirit and like keeping up, try this: Compete with what you don't see. Compete with their 401k statement value, the IRA Rollover accounts and the investment portfolios that show up in the mailbox quarterly. Imagining what the "Joneses" have may nudge you into increasing your 401k contributions and paying down your mortgage balance faster! And that competition will leave your wallet fuller and your mind more at ease. So, if you keep your focus on what you're most interested in achieving and minimize your acquisition of depreciating assets, you can find balance and enjoy both the joy of living in the here and now, while accumulating wealth to give you peace of mind, making your retirement years as comfortable as those you're in now.
