If you are paying attention, then you know that the pandemic is not really over. Each time we take a deep breath and decide to return to what was “normal,” a new variant rises up and tries to spoil the party. As careful as he is, even President Biden has fallen prey. However, if we take a look at what is going on around us and overlook the smattering of masked people in supermarkets, restaurants, concerts, shows and business gatherings, one would think that we are all “out of the woods.” Maybe yes, maybe no. According to reports from reliable sources, infections are generally not as severe. Those of us who have been vaxxed are still getting infected but perhaps not with extreme symptoms. Robin and I even joined a very good friend who we have not seen in person in almost two years at our favorite jazz venue, Vibrato, for dinner and a show. In our community, live performances are in full swing. Pacific Festival Ballet presented a wonderful and well-attended production, “The Sea Princess.” 5-Star Theatricals recently concluded their high energy delight ful production of “Newsies.” The choreography and dancing were world class. NABU Wines is booming every weekend with great wine and topnotch live bands. Stonehaus is SRO. For my birthday, we made a reservation six weeks in advance at Geoffrey’s in Malibu. On a broader scale, air travel is a three-ring circus. Recently I was at LAX at the International terminal waiting for family to arrive from the Netherlands. The sea of humanity waiting for arrivals, the river of people coming up the ramp into the terminal and the raw kinetic energy that filled the place was overwhelming. They were delayed in baggage claim and customs for over two hours because of long lines and luggage that never left Amsterdam. I waited for three hours, wearing a mask that almost suffo cated me in the heat. GADS!! Still standing, but who knows what tomorrow brings? Nevertheless, there is a great deal of joy in acting “normal.”

Due to the pandemic, many individuals have been saying that this time is different, and this upheaval may not follow the same pattern as in the “Justpast.like the other years when it happened and everyone panicked and thought it would just keep going and getting worse and worse, it bounced back up again,” she says. “But the thing

Inflation, rising interest rates and fears of a recession have many people worrying about their financial health. They may be watching their stocks, bonds and other investments plummeting and wondering if they should get out now and salvage what they can or stay in the market in hopes of recovering their assets and possibly increasing their wealth even more when the economy stabilizes. Whatever the decision, it shouldn’t be made without the knowledgeable input and guidance of a Certified Financial Planner® and other experts in the field. This is what they do, and most have seen it all before and know how to handle“Whenit. you use a professional, especially during times like this, you have a partner in mak ing your decisions,” says Laura Raulinaitis, senior vice president and Certified Financial Planner® of The Lake Avenue Group at Morgan Stanley in Westlake Village, who has been in the industry for 25 years. “When you work with a professional who knows your needs, your goals, and your risk tolerance, and who knows you and is there for you to talk things through with, you won't make an emotional decision at the wrong time.”

Ted Fischer, an experienced Certified Financial Planner® and founder of Fischer Investment Strategies in Westlake Village, agrees.
So, what are some strategies to make the most of your money through this difficult period without knowing how long it may last and how much worse it might get?
“Inflation, recessions and inflationary times are pretty normal and people should understand this. These cycles happen, and yes, the pandemic really threw everything into turmoil. The reality is it's a big inflationary problem, but here's the good news— we'll get through it—it may just take some time.”
Laura Raulinaitis
“When you use a professional, especially during times like this, you have a partner in making your decisions.”
I've heard the most in my life during these down times is that ‘it's different this time.’ They look at a situation and say, ‘No, Laura, you don't understand because this time we have extra debt, or we just went through this recession, or look at everything going on with Russia, or I never lived through a pan demic before.’ Well, I haven't either, but other peo ple have, and we still go on to make higher highs.”

“The rule of thumb is at least three to four months if both spouses are working and six months if only one spouse is working,” he says. “Some people are in specialized jobs too, and in that case, they might want to keep two years of living expenses accessible.”
“I have a saying: ‘Every dollar must earn its keep,’ and what that means is if the interest rate on one thing is higher than the interest rate on something else, then you want your dollars to earn their keep,” says Laura. “If you're saving and earning 2%, but you have credit card debt at 10%, then you're losing money. Instead of putting your money in a savings account, you need to pay down the credit card.”
In this volatile market, the bottom line is not to panic, stresses“DependingTed. on what the Federal Reserve does and how the stock market reacts, it may take a while for inflation to recede,” he says. Adds Laura, “We’re not in a death spiral. Give us a year or two and I think we'll be back making new highs and this will be a piece of our history that we'll be happy to forget.”
“If someone isn’t sure on how to go about finding someone they can trust, I think it's nice to look to people in your local area so that you can get together in person and build a rela tionship,” says Laura. “What you're looking for is someone that has taken on additional credentials in something that's important to you so you can feel more confident that you have a strong financial plan in place.” She also encourages people to go to Broker Check at broker check.finra.org/.“It'sapublicwebsite and will tell you if that person has ever had anyone sue them for any type of wrongdoing. It also gives you their background so you can make sure that what they're saying they do and what they really do are the same.”
For help with handling your portfolio, you can contact Laura Raulinaitis directly at advisor.morganstanley.com/the-lakeavenue-group and Ted Fischer at fisfp.com/
Due to higher interest rates, Ted recommends moving away from traditional bonds, which are fixed income, to Treasury Inflation Protection Securities (TIPS).

“I have a saying: ‘Every dollar must earn its keep,’ and what that means is if the interest rate on one thing is higher than the interest rate on something else, then you want your dollars to earn their keep.”
Adds Ted, “I look at bear markets as buying opportunities because they don’t come along that often, maybe once every three to five years, but when they do come, it's a great oppor tunity to make a lot of money in the short term.”
Also, says Ted, pay close attention to recurring credit card charges, and think about canceling them, especially if you’re no longer using the services.
“Believe it or not, this is the time where if you can, if you can get yourself to fight human nature, to put more into your retirement account because you're buying more shares at cheaper prices,” says Laura. “The tough thing is that you're putting money away and you're seeing your funds go down, but focus on how many shares you're buying instead of what the value of those shares are during a pullback.”
The recent increase in interest rates can also be used to your advantage.
The stocks he’s been selecting for his clients are mature, high dividend value stocks such as those in the financial, health care, and consumer staples sectors.
Certified Financial Planners® can offer a multitude of ways to protect and grow your money, but finding one you can trust and who you feel comfortable with is crucial. After all, this person is handling your hard-earned money and creating a path for your present and future financial health.

“They're attractive because they have a reliable dividend, which is substantially more than what people get in their so called ‘money market accounts’ or checking accounts or sav ing accounts at the bank.”

As for paying down your mortgage, Laura says that’s not always the best move. “Even now, interest rates are very low on mortgages. I generally won't tell clients to pay down a mortgage because their money over a market cycle will grow more in a diversified portfolio than the money they’re saving by paying down their mortgage.”
“These are U.S. Treasury bonds and they correlate and increase in value with rising inflation, so that’s a good move.”
“Those membership fees, television subscriptions, music subscriptions and other things—people may have gotten really good deals on them, but they didn’t read the small print that says you just signed up for a five-year membership.” He also advises holding off on big purchases, like replacing your car, doing home improvements, and taking expensive vacations.
As in any other year, it’s important for every household to have a good-sized emergency fund.

TREND SETTER | AUTO + MARINE 2022 PORSCHE PANAMERA: FOUR DOORS BUT WHAT A SPORTS CAR! ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY WALLACE WYSS 12
What makes this sports car different is that it has four doors like a family sedan while still managing to have a road-hugging shape like the 911 in its family tree. The rear seats fold down so if you’re going skiing, you could put your skis inside.
Listen to Wallace Wyss’ weekly car reports on “Autotalk” on KUCR-FM Riverside.
Porsche, once upon a time, was known for rear-mounted air-cooled engines. Well, no more! While they still have rear-mounted engines in some models, there’s a whole lot of luxury Porsche models with front engines that are water cooled.

While I didn’t want to take it to a racetrack to see if I could reach its promised 168 mph, I was still impressed that the 5,500 pounds was carried well, and the suspension could be altered at the touch of a button to adjust to the roughness of the road (air suspension is anIoption).didtake the car up one of Los Angeles’ snow-capped mountains and found it could be driven briskly, a match for any sports cars costing below $200,000.
Case in point is the Panamera, powered by a 2.9-liter V6 emptying two turbochargers that give it a rating of 326 HP at 5,400 rpm and Torque of 332 ft-lb. That’s connected to an 8-speed automatic.
Pricewise, I found the base model—below $90,000—satisfying, but the model choices go up in price from there, as you custom-order your own ride the way you want it.
One of the best features is the huge infotainment screen, which takes a little practice to master—while tuning Sirius radio you might find yourself adjusting the air condition ing until you get used to where all the controls are located.
Summing up? I see the buyer for this being a family man who wants something sporty to drive to work and take clients to lunch in that doesn’t sacrifice on comfort. And on the weekends, drivers can dial in the suspension to where they want it and drive briskly up the mountain the way Porsches made their legend in races, so it’s no surprise this mod el’s name is a shortened version of Panamericana, the road race where Porsche made its name with good showing in that classic 1,000-mile race in Mexico back in ‘53.
Another feature is the sunroof. I remember being in other cars where the rear seat passengers don’t get to enjoy the open sunroof that the front seaters do, which is not the case in the Panamera.

For those who want a bougie experience, saunter into Le Joy located in the romantic flower-filled courtyard of Hôtel Fouquet's Barrière where fine dining consists of artful plates of melon and chorizo, veal and veggies, cod and pineapple with fried mussels, and millefeuille and soufflé paired with strawberries and mint sorbet. The setting is ooh la la tres magnifique and for seven shared courses for 140 euros, you’ll be wondering how you can move here.
Parisian women have a certain je ne sais quoi where the finer details matter and as a result the whole ensem ble of Parisian women is sensible but seamless and effortlessly sophisticated. This shows itself in expertly tailored clothing, stylish flat shoes, natural hairstyles accented with a clip, or the jewel color emerald green appearing in dresses and skirts this season. Often Americans we saw in summer were the ones playing the part in colorful berets, red lipstick, scarves, hats and polka dotted clothing.

Paris may be the center of the universe for fashion, but style is a way of life. Style can be found in the art and architecture, the way a boulangerie or patisserie displays its baked goods, pastries and sweets, or the distinctive touches in bou tique hotels with elements of history. Style can be found wherever you look in the City of Light as a woman grace fully bikes with a baguette under her arm, the lights sparkle across the Seine like an Impressionist painting, or the romantic language welcomes you politely into each establishment with a friendly “Bonjour.”

There’s no better time to flock to the City of Love then now, as nonstop roundtrip service can be found from Los Angeles to Paris on French bee airlines for less than $500.
Many restaurants offer prix-fixed lunch and din ner options for around 25 euros. The best way to feel Parisian is to sit in a café facing street life and practice L'art de ne rien faire—the art of doing nothing. There are countless cafes to choose from but waste away some hours at Les Deux Magots in Saint-Germain-desPrés, a favorite spot for artists and thinkers since 1914. We suggest the cheese plate, foie gras and a bottle of rosé. In Place des Voges, sit outside in the 17th century vaulted arches at Café Hugo for espresso, onion soup, escargot and croque sandwiches. When in Paris, one must try Relais de l' Entrecôte for their one menu item— tender sirloin steak frites presented tableside with their famous secret sauce. In a non-touristy neighbor hood, find Le Saint Sebastien serving modern French cuisine with fresh ingredients and an extensive wine list. Sardines in oil, paté covered in green beans and mushrooms, and veggies with chicken that tastes like nothing you will find in the States.

OUTDOOR STYLE & FUN
“In terms of color, we did this pool that was in a night sky, dark color, and it had a lighter coping [the border around the pool] and it looked like a lagoon. It was really modern and elegant.”
“We can install sheer descents of water coming into the pool or have waterspouts coming out of tall accent walls. These walls can also serve to hide pool equipment, so they have two purposes,” she says.
Of course, there’s nothing like a pool to add that luxurious, resort-like feel to any backyard. Rectangular shapes with blue liners and clear lights are popular, but now there are many extras to add some pizzazz to that pool.
Combining water and fire features is also popular.
Having a stylish backyard gives homeowners more space to entertain and just have fun. From patios and pools to outdoor kitchens and living rooms, you can turn a boring backyard into a modern and beautiful space.
OUTDOOR LIVING | HOME + DESIGN
Usually made out of cinder block with a finish such as stucco or a honed stacked stone, they are tailor made.
All of these choices, details and decisions can feel over whelming to homeowners, but the experts at Cat in a Hammock can make the transformation of a backyard seamless. As both a design and build company, they handle everything from designing and creating proposals to getting permits and building the projects.
“We’re a one-stop shop,” says Kristina. “It’s easier for the homeowners because otherwise they would have to hire all these different trades people. We’re an exterior designer and manage every aspect of the project. We help with the mate rials so that they go with the style, colors and textures of the house so it all flows together.”
“For patios, depending on the architecture of the home and the style, and what the homeowner prefers, we like to use pavers,” says Kristina Jones of Cat in a Hammock, a land scape and outdoor living construction company. “There are modern paver slabs that have large patterns and pavers that have a slate stone finish to create more of an Italian or Spanish villa look. Then there’s the ultramodern, more contemporary patio, where we can use porcelain pavers that look like tile.
“People are asking for barbecue islands, usually with some sort of bar overhang so everyone can sit around the barbecue,” she says. “It depends on the size of the yard and the budget, but everybody wants a grill, some stainless steel drawers, maybe a refrigerator, and a trash bin hidden away inside the island.”
To add even more interesting detail, LED lights that change colors depending on the season and the homeowners’ pref erence can be installed. Light changes can even be put on an automated system so around Halloween the pool will be flooded with orange light, or red for Valentine’s Day.
“We do everything outside,” she says.

“We’ve done one with a wood grain tile around it, and then we put a polished precast countertop on top,” says Kristina.
Those are very minimalistic and sleek, and they’re usually in one shape, such as a large rectangle or square.” After the patio is complete, there are countless options for what to put on top of and around this beautiful foundation.
“We’ve been doing a lot more pebble versus plaster inside the pool,” she says. “The stones come in different sizes and plaster holds them together. Some brands even include aba lone shell, so you get a little bit of glitter on the floor of the pool, which is very nice and adds a little bit more dimension to the bottom of the pool.
Other common requests are Baja shelves with lounge chairs and an umbrella hole to relax in or out of the sun, and amazing spas.
“The trend with spas is they are level with the rest of the pool, so when you’re sitting on the patio, it looks like one seamless body of water,” says Kristina.
“The element of fire is also very attractive to people, so they like to have a fire bowl or other fire feature, especially when they have a water feature. We can put a fireplace in the corner of their patio to create a living room space. When they have that water running and that fire going in the evening, it just feels so cozy.”

In Dinah’s words: “In 1966 my mother (actress and director Lee Grant), her partner ‘Joey Feury’ and 8-year-old me moved from our apartment in Manhattan to 37A Malibu Colony. Initially we were going to stay for a couple of months. My mother landed a recurring TV role on ‘Peyton Place’ and won an Emmy, and we never went home. Malibu. How could people really live there yearround? Growing up in New York, beach towns were for summer vacations. There was something abnormal about being tan in December. Our rental was on the land side of the Colony and had its own swimming pool. There was beach access right across the street. Living in The Colony offered a freedom I never knew existed. I played unsupervised from after school until dinner and then again until bedtime. The road was a sport court for biking and hand ball, the beach our playground. Unlike my child hood in the vast population of New York City, no one said, ‘Be careful’ or ‘Don’t talk to strangers,’ because everyone knew everyone. Even our phone numbers were only four digits long since every number in our part of Malibu started with 456. There was an unspoken superiority over the 457s who went to a different school north of us. On weekends, my best friend and I would play ‘Harriet the Spy,’ peeking into the guard house and sneaking into the vacant homes, making notes in our ‘spy notebook.’ We even spied on the police, who had an outpost in a conference room across from the Colony Coffee Shop and Pharmacy. Oh, that coffee shop! Every Friday afternoon my girlfriends and I sat at the salmon -colored Formica counter, drank cherry phos phates and ate hot fudge sundaes. Adjacent to our house was a weedy lot with a path that led to the back stairs of the Bank of America. Next to that, with no wall or fence, was a rundown lot with ‘Lucky Lucas’ living in a tin and wood shanty. He played instruments and cooked outside. His daughter Mercedes and I walked to the school bus stop every morning. Word had it they were ‘Gypsies.’ Mercedes was shy and very pretty with curly brown hair, big eyes and round rosy cheeks. Sometimes I’d hear her father yell ing at her in another language. The rundown liv ing situation was unimaginable, but the Colony was different then.

Mr. Malibu: I watched Dinah’s journey amazingly evolve from her Malibu childhood into playing outstanding roles in “ Grease ,” “ Ordinary People ,” and landing a starring role in NBC’s “ Empty Nest .” On camera, her exceptionally sharp and witty comedic acting has been brilliant. Today she is a solid, healthy and well-grounded person who has not allowed unexpected severe losses to bring her down. Instead, she turned it around and published her book.
In my novel, The Real True Hollywood Story of Jackie Gold , this significant time in my childhood became the basis and inspiration for my protagonist—her need to fit in, to be accepted. Her story begins in the Colony and there are chapters devoted to the coffee shop as it existed then. And while it is by no means a memoir, both Jackie Gold and I went through a period of re-creating ourselves in order to pass beyond invisible velvet ropes that seemed to block our access to preferred starring roles. We left the Colony after three years and our new home was on 15 acres on a bluff overlooking Zuma Beach. Despite the challenges I’d been facing, I missed the free dom of walking and riding my bike everywhere. Now when I wanted to go to the store or see friends, I depended on an adult to drive me; but at least we had landed on a spot the tidal waves couldn’t reach.”

LOCAL LIMELIGHT | LIFE + CULTURE MALIBUMR.
Further down from Mercedes was one of the ten nis courts where residents held big fancy parties and famous actors and actresses drank and danced before stumbling home over the speed bumps. Joey grew his hair long and wore caftans to the Mayfair Market. Though my mother never once put on a bathing suit, she perfected a no-make-up look to suit the beachy life style. Our house filled with the scent of what they told me was ‘Turkish tobacco.’ My mother’s castmates, Ryan O’Neal, Mia Farrow and others had homes nearby. Dyan Cannon lived in #98 Colony. Once, Cary Grant drove by in a Rolls Royce looking for his lost dog. These new, glamorous friends drifted in and out of our home: Jack Warden, Burgess Meredith, Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. When my mother was filming ‘ In the Heat of the Night ,’ Sidney Poitier came for dinner. He kissed me on the cheek—I didn’t wash my face for days after! Rarely did the outside world disrupt our sunny, idyllic existence, though there were always rumors of a giant tidal wave coming ashore. Periodically the tides did rise, flooding the patios and sometimes even rooms of the beachfront homes. Sandbags were filled. The neighbor hood came together in the spirit of camaraderie. This was, after all, the price of paradise! I became self-conscious, partly because being Jewish, I had received some unkind comments. Feeling afraid and jealous, constantly comparing myself to the Copper-toned long-limbed blondes who surrounded me in the Colony and in my classroom. I hadn’t been raised religious; our family, in fact, celebrated Christmas. So why was I being picked on? Was it my short stature? My hair? My nose? Now, in the afternoons when I walked home from the bus stop, I felt wary not really knowing who my friends were. I began to have nightmares about tidal waves. The ocean, once a source of freedom and fun, became threatening. I feared being swept away by the undertow.
