Grandparenting: The Next Phase of Parenting? S

ome of my dearest friends have become grandparents in the past year and it’s really thrown me off my game. Adding to the confusion, I’ve started to hear other friends confess how much they are looking forward to becoming grandparents (when their 20-somethings aren’t yet married or dating their Mr./Mrs. Right)! I guess this is the way it goes. We end one phase of our lives and immediately start to fanaticize about the next. It’s got me thinking.

Is it wrong to admit that I cringe just a little bit inside when I realize that our oldest prince, who is 18 and in his first year of college, is not only living on the campus where I met his father, but is the same age I was when we started dating? YIKES. I’m still boasting an age that is safely ensconced in the mid-40s range, at least for six more months, and I’m too young to be at this phase of my life. Grandparenting? Really? But when you stop and think about it, it does sound kind of wonderful, doesn’t it? I’m envisioning daytrips to parks and zoos and ice cream in the middle of the day. Maybe I’ll be that grandma who takes the kidlets on trips to all of the zoos in the Midwest. I think about spoiling them rotten with gifts because something caught my attention or was on sale. And ballet recitals without the frustration of having to drive them to all of those rehearsals and write all of those checks? Sounds blissful! Sign me up. Our goal this month was to introduce you to some pretty amazing seniors in and around our community. These folks are making the most of their second act. Enjoy their stories and be inspired. I know we sure did, and we thank them for sharing their stories.

Around Town To participate in the Dictionary Project presentations, the National Honor Society members were required to raise $200 for the charitable organization. The Dictionary Project is a national group that provides dictionaries for third-graders thanks to private donations. The organization’s KC chapter oversees dictionary presentations to third-graders throughout the metropolitan area. The presentations at Richardson were coordinated by Cynthia Kaleikau, Richardson third-grade teacher. Lee’s Summit North is the only high school in the KC area supporting this effort. Students discovered the charity a few years ago, viewing it as a way to give back to the local schools and help younger students.

LEE’S SUMMIT’S MAGIC TREE Lee’s Summit Magic Tree is a holiday landmark at I-470 and View High Drive for residents and neighbors to enjoy during the holiday season. The purpose of the Magic Tree is for it to be defined by all who enjoy it. ICE THE CELL PHONES IN YOUR CIRCLE As the cold weather blankets our area, a growing number of seniors may find themselves stuck in life threatening situations. They may slip and fall, their car might break down, and they may get lost, confused, or stranded – literally left out in the cold. That’s why Visiting Angels, one of the nation’s largest in-home senior care agencies, has launched the ICE a Cell Phone Safety Campaign to help seniors in case of emergency. To ICE a cell phone, you load emergency contacts in seniors’ phones with the word ICE in front of the emergency contacts’ names so when someone finds a senior in trouble they know who to call In Case of Emergency. The goal is that this will become a universal emergency plan – a quick way for emergency responders to pick up a senior’s cell phone, and press the letter ‘I’ to find seniors’ emergency contacts quickly. As you and your family prepare for the upcoming holiday season, you may find broken or unwanted holiday light strands among your decorations. Instead of tossing them in the trash, bring them to the City’s holiday light strand recycling drop-off location at the City’s North Recycling Center, 1951 NE Douglas St., through Jan. 20, 2015. Containers will be located near the attendant station during operational hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Southeast Enterprises, a local nonprofit sheltered workshop that employs more than 160 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, will collect and prepare the light strands for recycling. The company is partnering with more than 165 locations in the metropolitan area, including Lee’s Summit. Lee’s Summit Medical Center (LSMC) recently hosted its first-ever Girl Scout Day to help Scouts earn their First Aid badge. Angie Lucchi, director of Physician Relations and Business Development, has led Troop 2045 since the fourth graders were in kindergarten and came up with the Girl Scout Day idea following a request to formulate ideas for the Scouts to earn their First Aid Badges. More than 250 Girl Scouts from Service Unit 650 containing 38 area troops spent the day on the LSMC campus, where employee experts at stations throughout the hospital educated girls about different aspects of healthcare. Stations included First Aid; the da Vinci Surgical Robot; Infection Prevention; and Sports Medicine, among others. The Scouts also had the opportunity to tour fire and ambulance rigs.

arl Chinnery is someone who cares an awful lot, and because of him things in our community and world do get better. Like the ingredients of an exceptional recipe, or the materials used to construct a quality home, a community is only as good as the people who comprise it. Lee’s Summit is a great city, and Carl is one of the citizens who has been a consistent contributor to that excellence. This local businessman, attorney, humanitarian, father, grandfather and friend has been generously investing his heart, mind, skills and spirit in our town for more than four decades. I did not actually know this about Carl for a long time. Initially, Carl was just “My Friend’s Dad.” When I met him I wasn’t quite sure how to take him, either, because he made a satirical remark and wasn’t smiling. I couldn’t tell what he thought about me. 20

Until later when I learned, as everyone who knows Carl does, that he has a terrifically dry and wonderful sense of humor, and truly loves people. Soon he became “My Friend’s Dad Who Drives The Ski Boat For Us At 6 a.m.” (Carl has a beautiful lakefront home at Lake Lotawana and has also been an integral part of that community. He is also an excellent boat captain.) When he asked me why I didn’t bring him a mocha one morning, I realized we’d become friends. He has since shown me kindness and support through difficult times in my own life, offering genuine concern and great advice. Over the course of several years, I began to run into the “Community Leader Carl Chinnery” at events. Or, I’d be writing about him in this magazine. Or reading about him in the paper. He is everywhere. Here in Lee’s Summit he’s especially dedicated to Rotary Club

of Lee’s Summit. You’ll also find his fingerprint on organizations like Eastland Community Foundation, Lee’s Summit Educational Foundation, Children’s Mercy Hospital, the Chamber of Commerce, Lee’s Summit Economic Development Council, R-7 School District, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Powell Gardens, Longview Community College, Lee’s Summit’s Red Cross, and he supports our local arts organizations like Summit Theatre Group and the Lee’s Summit Symphony. His support is varied and creative at times (as a speaker dressed up as The Cat in the Hat), and also normal and expected (offering his skills as an attorney or businessman). Always extraordinarily thoughtful. Taking all this in, at the same time getting to know his children and grandchildren and their character, had such an impact on me that I was intrigued to know more about this man who had cultivated such a great family, while also contributing significantly to the community. I couldn’t help but wonder why. What drives this man to give so much? I finally had the chance to ask him, and his answer was nothing fancy. It was simple. Direct. With a little wry on the side. ( Just like the man, really.) “I just love serving,” he says. “It is a great feeling to give back, to feel like you’re making a positive contribution. And I enjoy helping people. It’s selfish, really.” Humor aside, it is that joy that fuels his passion for the organizations he is involved with, and he found a perfect fit in Rotary, where the culture is all about “Service above self.’” He served as Rotary District Governor, was awarded the President Citation and Meritorious Service honors, and has poured his heart into the worldwide eradication of polio because of a personal experience with the disease. Carl is quick to convey that without his faithful wife, Jean, he could not do all that he does. “She is so supportive of everything I’m involved with,” he explains. “When I was District Governor for Rotary that meant attending more than 50 clubs and probably 80 dinners in one year. She’s just great.” A deep inner strength can be found beneath his lighthearted banter and experienced-businessman persona. In nearly 50 years of adult life, he has endured ups

and downs in business and personally, and through it all has known the wisdom of perseverance. “You just keep going,” he says of trials. It’s a legacy he has passed on to his family. His three children, Amy Chinnery Valmassei, Ben Chinnery and Holly Chinnery Pohlig are all accomplished in their fields and continue to contribute to their communities. And no matter how busy their father was with his career or his community commitments while they were growing up, his kids felt important. “It really stood out to me what a priority he made getting to our events,” says his oldest, Amy. She and her husband, Scott, live at Lake Lotawana with their children, Daniel (15) who’s a sophomore at Lee’s Summit North, and Annica (11) a sixth grader at Mason Elementary. “When we were growing up, Dad was at every concert, every play, every game. Even now it’s the same. He may not be partaking in what we do but he is present. He’s there. And he enjoys himself. There’s not a sense of responsibility, but a joy at being there.” Ben and his wife, Jularat, and their daughter, Kathleen (2 1/2 years), recently moved

back to the area from several years in Thailand. Ben recalls, “Dad has always encouraged and supported us to pursue our interests. His unwavering support is incredible. For example, he spent thousands of hours crewing for me in a sailboat as a kid and young man. We raced locally as well as across the Midwest.” The youngest Chinnery, Holly, now lives in Florida with her husband, Jeff, and daughter, Sophie (10 months). She says she knew she was important to her dad because of a little thing he did that made a big difference to her. “When he was as work and I called, he

always talked to me,” she says. “It didn’t matter if he was in an important meeting or with a client, he always took a moment to talk to me – even if it wasn’t urgent. Now as a work professional myself, I understand how difficult that must have been at times.” No matter how difficult it might have been, Carl has always tried to keep his priorities straight, and nowadays those priorities include family and continuing to put serving others above himself. The world -and our community -- will continue to get better, because someone like Carl Chinnery cares a whole lot.

ell, it’s that time of year again – the time to check to see if you are on track with your taxes. It’s not April 14th but the best way to make sure you are getting the best tax benefits is to make some moves before the actual year ends. If you take a moment now to assess the situation you could reap the benefits come tax time. Here are a few things you should do now before it’s too late: Charitable Gifts

Giving money to charity before the end of the year is a great way to boost your deductions if you itemize. You can deduct all kinds of charitable contributions, including cash, stock and non-cash donations, such as the cost of ingredients you buy for a soup kitchen. Some giving strategies can stretch the tax benefits even further. For example, if you have highly appreciated stock you were planning on selling, consider giving the stock to the charity instead of cash. That way, you get a deduction for the full amount, but you avoid paying capital-gains taxes on the increase in value since you’ve owned it. 24

Max it Out

The maximum salary deferral limit for 401(k), 403(b), and 457 plans in 2014 is $17,500 but individuals who are 50 and over may contribute an additional $5,500 per year. In future years, both the $17,500 maximum contribution and the $5,500 “catch-up” contribution limits may increase due to inflation adjustments. The maximum contribution amount for both Traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs is $5,500 for 2014 (subject to eligibility requirements). Contributions may be made until Monday April 15, 2015 and still be counted for the 2014 tax year with individuals 50 and over eligible to make an additional $1,000 “catch- up” contribution. In future years, both the $5,500 maximum contribution and the $1,000 “catch-up” contribution limits may increase due to inflation adjustments.

College Savings Plans

Contributions made by December 31st to 529 College Savings Plans sponsored by the donor’s state of residence may be eligible for a state income tax deduction or credit. These are just a few things you can do now to make for a more pleasant tax time. There are other strategies to use so it is important to consult with a professional. Oh, and don’t forget that the fees paid for tax planning and preparation can be deducted on your return for the same year in which you pay them. This also includes tax preparation software programs, tax publications and the cost to file your return electronically. These are all considered expenses under the heading of miscellaneous itemized deductions. So make the call now and get a jump on your taxes. he fall of 1988 found a small group of people praying and talking about their dream of starting a Christian school in Lee’s Summit. The desire was for a school where God was the focus, that welcomed families from all Christian denominations, where children were free to pray, and that had high academic standards. In August of 1989, the prayers were answered when Community Christian School (now Summit Christian Academy) opened its doors to four teachers and 32 students. One of the founders commented, “Just weeks before the start of school, we still had no location. But the Lord knew our need and provided! First Assembly of God Church in Lee’s Summit had just finished a new facility and offered their classrooms for our students.” By 1993, SCA had grown to 147 students, too large for First Assembly. Christ Triumphant Church had just finished a new wing and agreed to provide classroom space. The school now had two campuses across town from one another with students from preschool through 8th grade. “We were growing quickly,” shares SCA Head of School Linda Harrelson. “We needed more space and began dreaming of our own building on our own land.” In the meantime, the school purchased four modular units. “With had four modulars but no land on which to place them, I approached the pastor of yet another local church – Lee’s Summit Community Church on Jefferson Street. Pastor Doug Brown, without batting an eye, agreed to us placing the modular units on their property.” “These three churches have played a major role in our school’s history and we are so grateful for their willingness to support Christian education in Lee’s Summit,” says Harrelson. In rapid succession, the school received three major donations. 26

“The first gift of $300,000 came from two grandparents in 1997 and allowed us to purchase a 10-acre tract of land next door to Lee’s Summit Community Church. Our dream was becoming a reality,” Harrelson explains. A second donation of $100,000 came in 1998 from an out-ofstate grandmother whose note said, “I have never been to your school but I see the impact you are having on my granddaughter.” This gift allowed the school to start construction on a building, which is their current elementary facility. “We opened our doors in August 1999 to 333 students,” Harrelson says. “It was an exciting time for our young school.” During this same time, the school received a $750,000 matching grant that jumped started a capital campaign to raise funds for Phase II of the elementary building. In August of 2000, the school had completed Phase II and had an amazing 30 percent increase in enrollment to 432 students. In 2004, the school received full accreditation from two major accrediting bodies, added college-credit classes, and graduated its first senior class. In 2007, the school completed construction of a second facility that houses 7-12 and early education students. “Our 732 students are blessed with 52 dual-credit courses and a wide range of resource services,” Harrelson adds. Our SAT scores are consistently 29-30 percent above the national average and students compete often at the state level in MSHSAA athletic and fine arts competitions. We have a full-service international program that enriches the diversity of our student body and brings a global perspective to classes. nternist Mel Glazer retired from his medical practice several years ago after a lengthy career helping others. However, the doctor was not content to sit back, play an occasional game of golf and stop his helping ways. So Glazer took on a new role, one he says is easy to fulfill -- that of volunteer driver with JET Express. A program of Jewish Family Services, JET Express provides rides for older adults who no longer drive, taking them to the places they need to go. Whether it’s to the doctor’s office, shopping, to synagogue or church, or to meet a group of friends for a social outing, JET Express is helping older adults stay independent longer, and the volunteers who help them feel like they make a difference in someone’s life. “People are so grateful,” Glazer says. “It’s such a positive thing… and it’s one that fits with anyone’s schedule.” Glazer provides rides for Charlie Carpenter, a blind man who lives alone with his beloved dog. Glazer takes Carpenter to the grocery store where the two men shop and gently bicker over what items to buy. Because of their rides together, the two men have become the best of friends. JET Express needs more people like Glazer to become volunteer drivers for the program. Expanding the cadre of volunteer

drivers is crucial. During one month this fall, 77 rides were cancelled because there were not enough volunteers to take them. Becoming a volunteer is convenient, flexible and rewarding—and anyone can participate regardless of their religious affiliation. Volunteer drivers choose when, where and who they drive. Using a simple computer program, volunteer drivers log in to choose how often they want to provide rides whether it’s once a month or every week. The friendships that are created by being a volunteer driver are beyond measure. It’s easy to become a JET Express driver. Qualifications include: •You must be at least 21 years of age; •You must hold a valid driver’s license and have current auto insurance coverage; •You must use your own vehicle. Volunteer drivers must take part in a brief, one-hour training session. If you’re interested in volunteering for JET Express, please call 913.730.1410. Since the program began in 2008, JET Express has provided 11,940 rides to 401 riders. That adds up to more than 10,701 volunteer hours donated with 148,213 volunteer miles driven. There are currently 170 active older adult riders in the program.

Senior’s Home Safety Snapshot R

ecent research conducted by Home Instead Senior Care® network provides a compelling look at senior home safety. The survey of ER doctors, seniors and adult children reveals that home isn’t always the safe haven that seniors and their loved ones dream about. And adult children, their aging parents and emergency room doctors don’t always see things the same way. For one thing, 100 percent of emergency room doctors in the U.S. and Canada say it’s very important for adult children to take one day each year to perform a safety check of their aging parents’ homes. But in the last year, only 44 percent have done this. Likewise, 100 percent of emergency room doctors in the U.S. say it is very important for families of seniors to invest in basic home safety modifications, but only 18 percent of adult children report they or their parents have done so or plan to. The reason? Many of these adult children (56 percent) say their parent’s home doesn’t need modifications. Many issues could impact an older adult’s ability to remain at home, including the effects of aging on the senses. Don’t shy away from talking with an aging parent about sensitive issues such as home safety. A little extra help at home could be just what an older adult needs to stay safe. In fact, doctors estimate that 61 percent of seniors in the U.S. who come to the emergency room could benefit from more help at home. 30

n my rootless days before our daughter was born, travel was a constant for me. My parents instilled in my brothers and me a love of seeing new places and leaving the familiar behind for short bursts, with the comfort of knowing my home was always waiting for me. As a young adult I was my motherâ€™s frequent travel companion for wine adventures in Europe and beachy outings to Mexico. When I married, my husband and I were inveterate travelers. We thought nothing of taking off at a momentâ€™s notice for a weekend in a coastal town or grabbing a last minute deal on an all-inclusive anywhere. When Natalie arrived fifteen years ago, there was no thought to changing that existence. After all, she had come to live with us,

not the other way around, we reasoned. Adaptation to our wanderlust would be part of her upbringing. In those first few years, as she grew up into our lives, tying us as securely to her routine as a vine winding up the post holds it down to the earth, we slowed our pace. But we soon discovered a great travel truth - a child is eminently portable, and therefore an excellent travel accessory. Granted, they come with a lot of stuff, but in the days before excess baggage fees that was a minor concern. Soon Natalie was as good at airport security and pulling her own travel weight as any jet-setter. But the aforementioned mother was not to be left behind. Add to that the desire to spend as much time as possible with our aging

and which allows each to contribute their own preferences and life perspectives. Traveling together would have the added benefit of providing closeness that only being away from home together can bring, not to mention the ability to appreciate one another away from the stressors and habits of our daily lives at home. Grand-tripping was born.

We also wished to forge strong bonds between Natalie and her grandparents and older sister, ones not dependent upon us and only accompanied by turkey or Christmas carols. Our first adventure with the grandmothers was a week in Mexico. I made the travel arrangements (so as to suit our more rigid work schedules) and they paid their own way (which they were thrilled to do with the prospect of having the undivided attention of their children and grandchild

for a week.) For weeks prior to the trip our regular Sunday dinners were filled with conversation about day trips, restaurants to try, sunscreens and swimsuits, and best of all, memories of trips taken years ago. My daughter heard stories of a runaway trip to Mexico City before my motherâ€™s wedding, and of a road trip vacation involving a bear, a snake and some roadside picnics when her father was a baby. The prospect of traveling all together brought out a side to our mothers that we had rarely seen and Natalie had never witnessed. Their quest for more adventure was not the slightest bit sated by the advancing years. The trip itself we made as painless as possible; direct flights, meals for the plane which I prepared and carried in a collapsible lunch bag, cars to meet us at the airport, private tours at historic places, early dinner reservations, and comfortable accommodations involving kitchens so we could eat at least a few meals comfortably and more affordably at home. We tried to build in nap time (necessary for all of us, not just the baby!) and were completely amenable to spontaneous modifications of the schedule. We practiced much patience with one another, and found that the relaxation of being on vacation brought out the best behavior in us all. Our first grand-trip was a huge success. We have since traveled together to Mexico seven times, to the eastern and western Mediterranean, spots in North Africa, all over Italy, along the St. Lawrence River from Montreal to Boston, to the Amalfi Coast, the volcano of Vesuvius and its ruined Pompeii, to New York and to the islands of Malta and Sicily. We have been in art galleries in Florence, the armory of the Knights Templar in Malta, and the souk in Tunisia (where the combined shopping influences of both grandmothers and daughter convinced me that splurging on a gorgeous Persian rug was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - they were right.) We have attended Mass in cathedrals grand and continued >

churches tiny all over the world, including the oldest extant church in North America where Mass is still said in French, and the lovely cathedral of Monaco, where Prince Albert was also a worshipper that day and Princess Grace’s tomb ever bears fresh flowers. One of our most memorable days was a private (well, as private as you can get with 5000 other people) audience in Vatican City with Pope Benedict on my mother-in-law’s 83rd birthday. Truly an experience none of us will ever forget, whether we have perhaps a dozen active years left, or our entire lifetime stretches out before us. We have discovered that cruising is a particularly painless way to travel with multiple generations. Advantages include only unpacking once, familiar food (especially wonderful when dealing with sometimes tricky and always finicky older and younger tummies) and best of all, predictable plumbing. My mother and I once paid admission to a public W.C. in Italy which we discovered to be a row of holes in a concrete floor with heel grooves thoughtfully

placed beside. Do not underestimate the soothing power of American bathroom engineering. On a cruise ship my husband dances divinely with both his mother and his daughter, my mother-in-law can entrance the piano bar with her singing, and my daughter learns the exquisite table manners and conversational skill that come from their com-

That’s what grand-tripping does for us; we each will have the time to do what makes us happy and relaxed while traveling, while indulging in the ultimate luxury of being with those we love most. My daughter gets to bank these precious days with her grandmothers as security against a future when they may be too frail to join us, or when she is eventually traveling with her own family. There are many legacies I hope we are able to leave her, but this is the best - that of a lifetime of loving going and doing, with those she loves, across all our generations.

our years ago, when Overland Park resident Kristin Gembala discovered she had the hereditary breast cancer gene BRCA1, she made the tough decision to undergo both a bilateral mastectomy with breast reconstruction and a hysterectomy. “The figures associated with the gene are staggering,” says Gembala. “My sister and I had about a 90 percent chance of having breast cancer and a 50 percent chance of having ovarian cancer.” Gembala’s family had a history with breast cancer. When she and sister Kara Gorski were children, their mother died from the disease at age 39. Years later, when Kara was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 35, she discovered she had the hereditary gene. Even though Kristin was not diagnosed with cancer, she knew it was time for her to be genetically tested, too. “Though it ran in the family, it still came as a shock to find I also had the gene,” says Gembala. “But it was obvious I needed to have the surgeries.” However, the sisters surprisingly soon found their experiences with breast cancer afforded them a rare, entrepreneurial opportunity. After finding that regular bras just didn’t fit right after reconstructive surgery, the pair did some research and found a niche in the marketplace they could address. “There are 94,000 reconstructive breast surgeries a year in this country,” says Gembala. “Though all women may not experience what we did with regular bras not fitting, we have found many who have.” Three years ago, the sisters addressed that need and formed their company braGGs, LLC. The name says it all. “The word ‘bra’, the double ‘Gs,’ which stand for our last names, and the ‘s,’ which stands for the sisterhood of women who have undergone mastectomies as a result of breast cancer,” says Gembala.

The sisters raised startup costs for braGGs via a crowdfunding website and divided their duties with Kara shipping the company’s products (which now also offers other undergarments) from her home near Alexandria, Va. Recently, braGGs has garnered quite a bit of attention. The company and Kara Gorski and Kristin Gembala were featured in a recent book authored by actress Marlo Thomas called “It Ain’t Over ... Till It’s Over!” In it, Thomas shares stories of bold women who won’t give up or be held back. They were also featured in late October on NBC’s Washington News and a few days later, received a surprising invitation from Vice President Joe Biden’s office. “We were asked to attend a Breast Cancer Awareness reception at the home of the vice president,” says Gembala. “My first reaction was complete shock, but then once again, the gentle whisper of just how far reaching and impactful breast cancer is.” Gembala’s comments circle back to why the sisters co-founded braGGs. Though the attention and accolades have been gratifying, the real reward comes from helping women move forward during a difficult time. “Women who have had breast cancer have gone through so much and they shouldn’t have to also stress about what they put on their bodies,” says Gembala. “There are still so many needs to be met but to offer some help is very gratifying to my sister and me.” Retirement Leads to New Business

Three years ago, when Lee’s Summit resident Marilyn Arnold retired as a managing partner for New York Life Insurance Company, her accountant asked what she planned to do next. Arnold admitted she didn’t know but knew she wanted to do something of value. Her accountant’s next question was a little more direct. “She asked what I wanted to be when I was a little girl,” says Arnold. “That was easier. I wanted to be a seamstress and dress designer.” For good reason. When her mother patiently taught her 9-yearold daughter to sew in their Paris, Mo., farmhouse all those years ago, Arnold fell in love with the creative craft of designing and making clothes. She even ended up creating her entire school wardrobe and showing her designs at the Missouri State Fair. Now at retirement age, Arnold still loved the idea of designing clothes but thought it a bit unrealistic. However, when a friend from Philadelphia asked her to make a custom pillow out of her old wedding dress and then others wanted their wedding gowns ‘preserved’ in the same creative way, the light bulb went off. As a former executive, Arnold knew research about any new endeavor is key and though she found very little competition for the pillows, her most important encouragement came from one special person. “I asked my 85-year-old mom what she thought and she immediately loved the idea,” says Arnold. “She even said she wanted one.” These days, Arnold lives in Lee’s Summit and has an impressive home studio (under the name Marilyn Arnold Designs) with five sewing machines including one for embroidery and two for continued >

She markets, designs and creates not only pillows but also blankets and christening gowns from wedding dresses and has even made, at a client’s request, an entire crib set, including bed skirt, coverlet, bolster pillow and bumper from a wedding gown. Her customers are all over the country and since the pillows alone take about four to eight hours to make, she still has a full work week. “I’m retired but I still work a lot of hours,” says Arnold. “I love what I’m doing and in some ways, have come full circle back to my beginnings.” Earlier this year, Arnold’s new vocation caused her to be featured in a New York Times article about retired people reinventing themselves. The article focused not only on Arnold’s unusual business but her entrepreneurial spirit. She also receives kudos from a motivational, humorous presentation she created called “Your Second Act,” which features stories about older women’s achievements and experiences which Arnold has presented to Rotary Clubs locally and in the Northeast. She just put the finishing touches on another presentation called “Reuse, Repurpose, Restore: Transforming Keepsakes into Heirlooms.” It’s all been great,” says Arnold. “The wedding gown projects have provided such positive inspiration. They put my creativity on steroids.”

In such a fast-paced culture, where we can see at the click of a mouse what a friend in Toledo is eating for lunch, it’s important to apply the brakes. Slow down. Remember that our bodies and minds need exercise, relaxation and community. Newly repurposed Gamber Community Center is an ideal location to find some of life’s slower and healthier activities. Located at 4 SE Independence Avenue in Lee’s Summit, it’s a short 5-minute drive from the city’s historic downtown shopping district. Fill up on some of Lee’s Summit’s kitschy food features, such as Whistle Stop Coffee & Mercantile, before working it off in the state-ofthe-art fitness rooms at Gamber Community Center. The center opened in June 2008 with a focus on senior health and lifestyle. While continuing to meet seniors’ needs, Gamber Community Center has grown into a fully functioning multi-generational facility. Originally named after benefactor and fundraiser Harold “Gene” Gamber, the parks and recreation department added the word “community” to the center’s moniker on November 23, 2014, to better reflect the varied activities and classes offered there. To support the center’s patrons, new cardio equipment and aerobics classes have been added. The original fitness room has been repurposed for cardio, while the computer lab has been transformed to house strength and weight equipment. As part of the repurposing, Gamber Community Center

expanded their weekend operating hours to better accommodate their member’s schedules. The center is now open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays, and from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. Opening at noon on Sundays, the center will remain open until 6 p.m. Weekday hours Monday - Thursday remain the same, 6 a.m. until 9 p.m. With such broad hours and activities, there is something for everyone at Gamber Community Center, which features a small bistro with purchasable snack items and beverages, though the coffee and tea are free for members. The center provides free Wi-Fi access throughout, and two Nintendo Wii game console systems for fun and relaxation. If you prefer to move about, take a light stroll up and down the Grand Hall. Take time to appreciate local area artists such as Carolyn Hull, whose work will be on display until January 15, 2015. Outside, a paved exercise trail with nine outdoor fitness zones encircles the center. Three laps around the center equal one mile, and plenty of time to work up a sweat. If the weather is nice, stay outside and enjoy a round of croquet or bocce ball in the fenced patio/courtyard. A New Vision for Lee’s Summit Development City’s Development Center keys in on business streamline, ease of process

he City of Lee’s Summit’s Development Center has been a flurry of activity since opening up in January. From Red Development to North Point, all the way to traditional “mom and pop” shops hoping to open their doors in Lee’s Summit, business leaders and entrepreneurs are finding the new ways of doing business at City Hall a breath of fresh air. Development Center Director Mark Dunning says once all the people and processes were in place, the new mantra of “Lee’s Summit Means Business” began to take shape quickly. And, not surprisingly, helping people do business started with just that – people. Dunning’s trio of project managers – Chris Hughey, Dawn Bell and Mike Weisenborn – continue to walk dozens of interested businesses down the road of codes, forms, studies and permits. “Putting the project managers at the forefront and marrying them and the applicant before they even go to a meeting, that was an early key,” says Dunning. Eliminating the old “us vs. them” stigma of City Hall, Dunning says that fostering a partnership with businesses signaled an immediate change in philosophy. Not only does the project manager 1-on-1 style make for easier access to economic development, but it allows the team to better track business data. Initially, the revamp at City Hall was going to center around an ombudsman to work with local businesses. But Dunning and his team took that concept a step further. Those project managers each brought a depth and breadth of knowledge to their new roles. “Each brought their own piece with their own set of glasses to this concept,” says Dunning. “They take it upon themselves to figure it out.” 52

According to Dunning, a better business process at City Hall will gain more advocates for doing business in Lee’s Summit. The Development Center’s team is receiving telephone calls, walk-ins and inquiries via email daily about opening a business in Lee’s Summit. Businesses inquiring about setting up shop in Lee’s Summit have ranged from mom-and-pop establishments to larger enterprises whose owners may or may not have considered opening here in the past. In a recent nationwide survey conducted by North Star Destination Strategies, respondents were 12.9 times more likely to advocate Lee’s Summit “as a place to conduct business” compared to 200 other cities in 40 states across the nation. And it also has to do with the buzz of activity going on in the City’s Development Center located on the first floor of City Hall. That Development Center’s team consists of a director, three project managers, a business service representative and a communications director. These individuals have a combined level of experience nearly 100 years in such areas as project planning, construction plan review, permitting, inspection, communications and business licensing services. In 2015, the Development Center will continue to fine-tune processes and look for ways to ease business license renewals and continue to be a part of the discussion regarding incentives and policies. I think they would describe me as loyal, fun and a little bit kooky. Where was your best vacation ever?

I took my daughter on a ski trip one winter and I still remember to this day when we were being hoisted up the mountain on a ski lift with large flakes dancing around us like white butterflies and the air was heavy with the freshly fallen snow. It was an amazing moment. I think it was followed minutes later by harrowing screams as my daughter lost control for a few minutes going down the mountain. But we made up for that by spending some time in the hot tub at our condo later that evening. It was perfect. What is your favorite date night restaurant?

Right now it’s me and my husband, Shawn, and our two dogs, Coco and Jack. My daughter, Adee, is a freshman in college at the UMKC conservatory so that’s been quite an adjustment.

I also am putting on a conference in Kansas City this year for food bloggers. That’s new for me so I’m very excited about it. I do some consulting work as well. I have lived in Missouri my whole life…so far! I grew up in Buckner and lived in Independence and Blue Springs during my high school years. I lived in Columbia for graduate school, and now live in Lee’s Summit. 54

You will find several tennis balls on the floor of my car because my husband and I play tennis together a lot. It’s a great sport and very challenging. But mostly it’s just fun! I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy so having sports in my life is important. Sometimes the neighbor kids will come by and say, “Can Marly come out and play?” I try to do a quick game of catch when I can.

My all-time favorite restaurant is Blue Koi. There’s one in Leawood and one in Westport. I almost always get the Tofu with Black Bean Sauce and savor every bite. What is the best thing about living in Lee’s Summit?

I love our parks! Of course, I’m on the parks board so I might be a little biased. However, I think everyone would agree that we have an incredible parks system, which adds great value to our community. Besides the parks, the people. I’ve met so many wonderful people over the years. I’m proud to call Lee’s Summit home!

I love getting up early, getting a good start on my 10,000-step daily goal, followed by a little meditation, writing in my journal and reading from an inspirational book. When I have this morning routine in sync, my day is on fire!

Jaguar’s F-Type Coupe Strikes a Stunning Pose Article and Photography Tom Strongman

n 1961, the breathtakingly beautiful Jaguar XK-E knocked the automotive world on its ear and today it is often considered to be one of the 100 most beautiful cars in the world. While few modern cars can ever approach the XK-E’s sublime and sensuous beauty, I couldn’t help but think of it when I laid eyes on the 2015 F-Type coupe. The coupe’s long nose and flowing roofline bear more than a passing resemblance to the profile of the XK-E, also known as the E-Type. The muscular haunches and sharp character lines that punctuate the fenders all speak of power and speed. The car drew comments wherever I drove it. The coupe is the second F-Type model. The convertible was new last year. Jaguar has announced that production of the XK will cease this summer, leaving the smaller and less-expensive (relatively speaking) F-Type as the only Jaguar sports car. Compared to the XK, the all-aluminum F-Type feels lighter and more agile. It is an exceptionally competent machine that blends road holding with a ride that is firm but not harsh. It feels taut and secure yet it is pliant enough to be comfortable for a long drive. It is composed and confident in corners.

The coupe comes in base, S and R models. The base car with a 340-horsepower, supercharged V-6 starts at $65,000. Jump up to the S, with 380 supercharged horsepower, for a starting price of $77,000. The high-performance R gets 550-horsepower from its supercharged V-8 and it starts at $99,000. All use an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. I drove an S model from Jaguar’s press fleet, and found that the V-6 makes more than enough power. The engine has direct fuel injection, an Eaton supercharger, dual overhead cams and variable camshaft timing. Jaguar says the V-6 can hit 60 miles per hour in 4.8 seconds, and it has a top track speed of 171 mph. While the V-6 does not have the explosive acceleration of the V-8, it pins you back in the seat with a satisfying surge. The acceleration is enhanced by the active exhaust that can be opened up with a button on the console. It roars under full throttle and crackles during deceleration, and that’s fun. The test car’s light gray cabin was pleasant, almost calming. The extended leather package put soft hides on the seats, dash and headliner. The climate package added dual-zone climate concontinued >

very time a bell rings an angel gets his wings…Zu Zu’s petals… hello Bedford Falls…hello movie house…if you are smiling, you are someone who has been touched by the classic film, It’s A Wonderful Life. A movie that has inspired generations. Bill Baird has taken this delightful movie to heart and personifies George Bailey throughout the year. He emulates George’s giving community spirit in everything he does. Bill has visited the real Bedford Falls, which is Seneca Falls, New York, to see what many believe was director Frank Capra’s inspiration. He has also met Zu Zu, actress Karolyn Grimes in real life. “When I traveled to New York, I met another raving fan of the movie, John Mencl, who also lives in Lee’s Summit. He is a personal injury attorney, and now offices in my building in downtown Lee’s Summit,” says Baird. “John and I had Karolyn Grimes visit downtown Lee’s Summit a few years ago to sign autographs. Last year, we showcased our collections in a Chamber event and it was overwhelmingly rewarding.” Originally from Clinton, he has lived in Lee’s Summit for 17 years, and has been a real estate broker for 16 years. He is a school board member, a Rotarian and is active in supporting Chamber events. “I am not sure why, but when I was around 15 years old, I became fascinated with the movie. The networks were playing it on every channel and I couldn’t stop watching it. From there my fascination turned into an obsession. I began collecting anything that had something to do with the movie. Not just ornaments, photos and books, but posters, throws, collectible villages, autographs, signs and plates. I even began collecting anything that was seen in the movie…a newel post, an antique cash register, an antique typewriter, a Tom Sawyer book, and more,” says Baird. Bill has so many cherished items, but his favorite is a photo he had created 16 years ago when his daughter was just a year old. “I posed for a picture with her conjuring a memorable scene from the movie. lory Baird, and the daughter in the photo, now 17, is aptly named Bailey and even nicknamed Zu Zu! Their son, Grant, is 14. “I try to give back to the community as much as I can. The best way to describe why is that I feel good giving back and trying to make a difference. The main character, George Bailey, sacrifices his whole life to help others, but doesn’t necessarily feel good about it. It’s not until he is given a chance to see what the world would be like without him that he realizes what a difference he has made,” says Bill. “I have seen the movie hundreds of times, but each year I get more from it. You can imagine that at age 15 the highly emotional scene during the Great Depression didn’t mean as much to me as it does now after suffering through the recent recession. Nor did I understand the intensity of the father of a little girl with a high temperature until I had the experience of having my own little girl with a fever. Over time the most important takeaway has remained the same for me. When Clarence the Angel says, ‘Each man’s life touches so many other lives, when he isn’t around he leaves an awful hole.’ This theme is as subtle as it is overt. y mom is a seasoned AARP member. She called me one day, and said in a bemused tone, “When I type my password, it turns into small dots.” Adorable, yes, and also an indicator of a trend I’m noticing: Though it’s sometimes a struggle, more senior citizens are determined to get hip with technology. The Pew Research Center recently reported 66 percent of adults 65 or older now go online, and 77 percent have a cell phone. But really, you don’t have to mine through studies and snooze over bar graphs to see what’s happening. Just look around. Pop into grocery stores. Watch people at airport terminals. Hang out with your elders. You’ll likely see Aunt Pearl whipping a phone out of her handbag, or Great Uncle Walt tapping away an email on a tablet. I don’t think we’re at the point where most grandparents are Snapchat-ing or Yik Yak-ing between Instagram uploads. But if you pay attention, there has been a noticeable shift over the last five years. The Greatest Generation is generating cyber traffic. Of course, there are many people like my octogenarian uncle. A self-proclaimed Luddite, he follows pop culture on “newsprint 1.0”—also known as the paper “app” that gets downloaded on his driveway every morning. But he knows what a selfie is. He frequently asks me questions like, “What does YOLO mean?” My uncle is not at the point where he’d acquire a computer, but you never know. There’s a strong curiosity brewing. My parents are another story. They’ve owned a computer for over a decade. They love this connection to their children, grandchildren and the world, and I know they could not live without it. They can email and Google with the best of us. Ordering their Fred Astaire benders from Netflix sometimes leads to missteps, but they get by. Both are signed up for Facebook, even though they have not graduated beyond the generic silhouette profile pics.

A year ago, I was floored when my mom begged me to show her Twitter. She loves the concept of chiming thoughts to the universe, and seeing what other people are pondering or joking about. Like Facebook, my mom is signed up on Twitter, but has not yet become an active user. She’s still in the egg phase. Nonetheless: Wow. My parents live far away, so every time we visit each other I’m always giving them some kind of tech tutorial. I have empathy and eternal patience, probably because there’s a generation on the other side I depend on for my own “Genius Bar” consultations—my sons. The very morning our youngest left for college, he took it upon himself to write out a manual for me and my husband on how to navigate the 5,000 remotes for our flat screen TV. And I’m not kidding: As I was writing this very column, he texted me a video link. A few minutes later, a follow-up message suggested I turn my phone horizontally for better quality. I was, indeed, holding it vertically. Marketing-wise, I think the tech industry is lagging when it comes to helping each generation adapt to their products. Cell phone screens are not always compatible with seniors’ vision. Middle-aged vision, for that matter. There are also finger flexibility issues, or simply a lack of background in how patterns and things work on screens—like knowing the reason for “password dots.” All of these stumbling blocks can be addressed. With a little patience, every generation can, and should, connect. Because YOLO.
